12 best recording interfaces
A recording interface, also commonly referred to as an audio interface or sound interface, is a crucial piece of equipment used in music production and recording. It serves as the bridge between analog audio signals (such as those from microphones and musical instruments) and digital audio signals that can be processed and manipulated on a computer. Here's what you need to know about recording interfaces and their related aspects:
Purpose: Recording interfaces enable you to connect analog audio sources, such as microphones, instruments, and synthesizers, to a computer for recording, processing, and playback. They convert analog signals into digital format and vice versa.
Components: Recording interfaces typically consist of the following components:
- Inputs: These are connectors where you plug in microphones, instruments, or other audio sources.
- Preamps: Many recording interfaces have built-in preamplifiers (preamps) to boost the low-level analog signals from microphones and instruments to a usable level.
- Converters: Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) convert analog signals to digital, while digital-to-analog converters (DACs) do the reverse, turning digital audio signals into analog signals for playback.
- Outputs: These connectors allow you to send audio from your computer to studio monitors, headphones, or other external devices.
Connection: Recording interfaces connect to a computer via USB, Thunderbolt, Firewire, or other connection types. The choice of connection depends on your computer's compatibility and the interface's capabilities.
Sample Rate and Bit Depth: Recording interfaces support different sample rates and bit depths, which determine the audio quality and resolution. Higher sample rates (e.g., 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 96 kHz) and bit depths (e.g., 16-bit, 24-bit) offer better audio fidelity but also require more storage space.
Number of Inputs and Outputs: Recording interfaces come in various configurations, offering different numbers of input and output channels. Some have a single microphone input, while others have multiple inputs for recording several sources simultaneously. The number of outputs also varies, affecting your ability to connect studio monitors or external effects processors.
Phantom Power: Many recording interfaces provide phantom power to condenser microphones that require it. Phantom power is typically switchable for individual microphone inputs.
Accessories: Accessories for recording interfaces may include cables, adapters, and shock mounts for microphones. Additionally, some interfaces come bundled with recording software or digital audio workstations (DAWs).
Compatibility: Ensure that the recording interface you choose is compatible with your operating system (Windows, macOS, etc.) and your recording software.
Latency: Low-latency performance is crucial for real-time monitoring and recording.High-quality recording interfaces often offer features to minimize latency.
Recording interfaces play a central role in any home or professional recording setup, allowing musicians, producers, and audio engineers to capture high-quality audio and bring their musical creations to life. The choice of interface should align with your specific recording needs and the equipment you plan to connect to it.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell |
Answer: | Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a |
Answer: | Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side |
Answer: | Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the software disk or downloads |
Answer: | The Software is downloads. ProTools first requires internet connection and has a small cloud coverage, they want you to buy more space. My ProTools sessions won’t open in ProTools first. I believe the AIR Instruments it comes with requires an Ilok dongle and Ilok account for activation. The HDH 40 Headphones are cheap made compared to the HDH 50s. The Mic is ok, the interface is nice made and nice looking. It’s worth the money Guitar Center still carries the only interface this one isn’t really circulated yet! |
Question: | Is it ever in stock? been waiting for a month now with it ordered an i keep getting a different arrival time.. is it worth the wait |
Answer: | Yes. I too received different delivery dates. It arrived as soon as it was in stock. It is worth the wait. |
Question: | will it still work if it connects from a usb c to a macbook that has usb c connection?, will it work the same with a usb c/usb c cable |
Answer: | It will you can even use adapters to change its connection to usb or thunderbolt |
Question: | Hi, can i use this with fl studio |
Answer: | Hi, M-Audio support here! Thanks for your question. I can confirm the AIR 192|4 interface in this package will be suitable as an audio interface for FL Studio! I hope this helps and If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us directly - [email protected] Thanks, Krishan |

Answer: | Hi Matt,Alesis support here! You can connect your phone from the headphone jack to any of the line-level inputs, and it will record alongside two XLR mics. If you have any other questions for me, please feel free to email me directly at [email protected]. |
Question: | What is the difference between the main out, and monitor out? Can I control two sets of speakers, and a headphone volume independently with this mixe |
Answer: | Think of it like a concert, Main Out is the speakers the crowd would hear. Monitor Out is the speakers turned backwards that the musicians hear. Headphone Out is what the producer behind the mixer listens to. And yes, you can control the volume on all three of those outputs independently from each other. |
Question: | I'm looking to do live mutitrack recording. does the usb interface send more then one stereo master track |
Answer: | Evening... I downsized from the Multimix 4 to a two-channel mixer, basically used for my audio book recordings. If memory serves me correctly, this does offer 2 track in/out via the bus (stereo, of course). Sorry I couldn't be of more help...have you checked out the specs at places such as B&H, Sweetwater, zZounds and so on? |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use it with phantom power |
Answer: | We found that if you have the GoXLR, and a USB headset, that we can still get the sound over. Put a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cord from the headset output on the GoXLR, and into the Line In port on the back of a computer. Then, use the 'Listen to this device' option in the sound settings to redirect sound from 3.5mm Line In, and output to the USB headset. Can use a guide like https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/126383-listen-microphone-through-playback-device-windows.html to see the process. Couple things to note - If you hear a buzzing or feedback, you may need to get a quality 3.5mm Ground Noise Loop isolator, and be sure to get a quality 3.5mm cable, otherwise the sound may sound a bit degraded. |
Question: | Is this capatible with Chromebook? And what mix apps on chromebook do I need for this |
Answer: | Yes, pretty easily I might add. |
Question: | Can I connect a smartphone via Bluetooth to do a phone interview on a podcast, all the while that person hear me and my listeners hear that person |
Answer: | Yes, it supports 70 Db of gain in addition to the phantom power. So it can run nearly and microphone you throw at it. |
Question: | Will this work with a usb microphone |
Answer: | Currently, windows only. |

I hope that this helps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HepAI-UT-6I |
Question: | How well does this interface perform in regards to latency |
Answer: | Up until recently, I could dial down the ASIO buffer to 64 samples and get about 2.5ms latency in each direction. However, it seems that recent Windows updates have wrecked ASIO4ALL, so I can only dial the ASIO buffer size to 256 samples, yielding a latency of about 10ms/21ms. Not great, but usable. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It appears that phantom power gets switched on all 4 mic pres simultaneously. Can I use dynamic & condenser mics together without causing damage |
Answer: | Because the one in the front is NOT powered. The rear inputs can power mics or active pickups, up to 48v. I run 9v batteries in all my active guitars, so they're already powered, so I just run all my guitars into the front input. If I'm recording my 4x12 cab, I use the XLR in the back with my SM57. |
Question: | will this power a microphone that requires phantom power? sorry if this is a dumb question, im new to XLR microphones |
Answer: | Your question has me curious. The data speed for this device will not get close to the rates requiring a cable with the thunderbolt 3 type throughout. The audio stream will get there just as fast with their stock cable and with a reasonably priced ($6-10) usb type c cable. The nicer cables are more about throughput than latency. |
Question: | Can it write four tracks simultaneosly |
Answer: | Audio is routed from the computer through USB-C to Evo. There are two 1/4” outputs on the back of the Evo to plug into speakers. |
Question: | Does this include a usb power cable that goes from the interface to the computer |
Answer: | My interface remembers its gain settings when rebooting. Both when I power cycle the unit and when my computer power cycles. Make sure you download the most up to date drivers for it. |
