Answer:	Most likely people who are having noise problems it is because of ground loop isolation problem. If you have a ground loop isolation problem grounding the preamp box is unlikely to help. Without getting technical, what you want to buy is a ground loop isolator or a humm eliminator; both the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator tackles the cause of the noise at the fundamental source of the problem, depending on your audio setup, one maybe easier to use than the other. To use the ground loop isolator or the humm eliminator they generally come with instructions, or you can google this topic. If the noise in your audio system isn't fixed by using this solution the first time, try putting the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator at various points in your audio system. Also you can talk to audio people and get advice about how to fix ground loop problems from people who setup big audio systems, for concerts and such; if you talk to the average electronic garage shop audio enthusiast you are likely to get bad advice, i.e., meaningless explanations. Also caution must be used when Googling this topic, much of the discussion, advice and explanation on this topic is bogus, you can get a general correct feel of this topic if you read a number of explanations. Also one more thing that can cause a "popping noise" is that you have too much gain, this is a phono amp and the gain is huge, it takes a 3mV and makes it 2Vp-p this is a gain of around 100 to 200, if you gain up the audio signal too much then the signal out of your amplifier runs out of head room and clips, this can cause a popping sound, essentially you have too much gain. If this is occurring you need to either buy a preamp with less gain or attenuate the signal before it gets to the preamp. If this is a problem, too much gain, you can buy preamps with gain control.

Answer:	Yes, indeed. If your need was like mine (no built-in pre-amp on the turntable and no specifically dedicated phono input on your amplifier) you will find this unit to be the perfect solution to needed amplification of the turntable's output. Don't forget to hook up the ground wire as directed or you may wind up putting unwanted noise into the audio.
Question:	My amp DOES have a Phono Input, but my cartridges are low output. Can I use this to boost the signal using the Phono Input to reduce audible hiss
Answer:	No, you can't. This is a phono preamp with RIAA playback equalization that amplifies the signal about 100 times, so it essentially does what your built-in phono preamp does. The output signal from the separate preamp is equalized to a nominally "flat" frequency response and the amplified signal level will overload and probably damage your built-in phono preamp. Plug it into any other stereo line input on your system (AUX, CD, DVD, TAPE, VCR, etc.), but NOT the PHONO input! If you need higher signal gain, maybe look at phono preamps from ART or TCC that have output level controls. If you use moving-coil (MC) cartridges, you need a preamp specifically designed for them...they require at least 55 dB (over 500 times) signal gain vs. about 40 dB (100 times) for moving-magnet (MM) cartridges. Noise becomes a critical issue with MC cartridges because of their extremely low signal output, so good-quality cables and good turntable grounding are essential.

Answer:	Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. Question:	Has anyone used this with a heil pr-40 microphone
Answer:	Hi Jeremy...Have not used my cloudlifter with the Heil pr-40.... but since it is a dynamic mic the cloudlifter might just be what the doctor ordered. As you probably know... the unit is great for a 20-25 db boost for mics that would be noisy when you crank the gain/trim pot on a preamp or mixer. I had that experience with an RE-20... noisy as can be when cranking the mixer gain... but clean as a whistle when hooked to the Cloudlifter. Just so you know my signal chain is Neumann TLM 102 mic into an Aphex 230 pre... through a small mackie mixer... into a Presonus firebox interface and finally a PC running Adobe Audition CS6. I have the gain on the pre set at about 2 o'clock and the output level turned all the way down. That means my initial record level is about -16 db and then I just boost it about 5 bd... do my eq and compression processing... then normalize to -3 db. This gives me a pristine noise floor. Hope this helps in spite of the fact I have not have the direct pr-40 through cloudlifter experience.Regards
Question:	Is this better used for condensor or dynamic microphones
Answer:	The CL-1 is useful only for dynamic and ribbon microphones, and will not work at all with condensers. The reason for this is that the 48v phantom power supplied from a USB interface, or a mixer, is used by the CL-1 to generate ~25dB of very clean gain. However, this means that the power doesn't get distributed further down the line. If your mic requires phantom power, the CL-1 is useless. However, if you're using a dynamic, the CL-1 is WONDERFUL, it helps generate very clean gain from almost any source. Definitely recommended for dynamics and ribbon microphones.
Question:	Will this do anything for me if my preamps are already pretty great? I'm using an SM7b
Answer:	The answer hinges on your definition of "pretty great". What you need from a preamp when you're using an SM7b is plenty of quiet gain. There are many really great preamps that don't have that. This mic needs so much boost that you're going to bring out the noise in just about every pre. The SM7b is a great mic, but I would simply not record it without a Cloud Lifter regardless of the quality of the pre.
Question:	Do i need 2 xlr cables for this to work? or will just one cable do
Answer:	Yes, you will need two XLR cables. The CloudLifter CL-1 is intended to be used with both a microphone and a mixer, or a mic and n XLR/USB interface. The CL-1 takes the 48v phantom power from a mixer or interface and turns it into around 25dB of very clean gain. It's intended for use with ribbon microphones, like the Fathead, or dynamics, like the SM58; if you are using a condenser microphone, like the NT1-A, then the CL-1 won't work, since it DOES NOT transfer 48v phantom power to the microphone. In my setup, I've used an SM58, going into the CloudLifter, then going into the FocusRite Scarlett 2i2 XLR/USB interface. (You may want to use the Scarlett Solo, if you only intend to use one mic. It's got the same preamp, but is slightly cheaper.) The end result is very clear, loud, and not at all noisy. I hope this helps you out!

Answer:	I have all of the solid colors. All are matte. Don't know why someone answered that they're shiny. There's no nylon or lycra content, so no shine and therefore not cheap-looking.

Question:	Anyone know where these are made? Are they made in China like many competitor's models
Answer:	These are made at Beyerdynamic factory in Germany. All of Beyerdynamics large on-ear headphones are made in Germany. Some of the companies in-ears are made in China but 90% of their products are made in Germany.
Question:	Given the prices $180 for 32 ohms, $278 for 80 ohms, and $170 for 250 ohms, which one should I buy for 98% amp-less listening
Answer:	For an amp-less setup the 32 Ohm are the way to go. Yes you can use the 80 Ohms non-amp'd (the 250s are not recommended for this), but your listening levels are going to be limited (how many dB you get out of them). Beyerdynamic created a set of low-impedance for a reason - and if your laptop / phone / or PC with no external amp/dac or amp'd internal card are your primary use...then you have your answer.
Question:	Does the 30 ohms have the same bass output if it is connected to an amp compare with the 250 ohms
Answer:	I am looking at this 250 ohm headphone because it has a high impedance. I build a vacuum tube amplifier with a nominal impedance of 600 ohms. Although it seems to drive 32 ohm headphones, it will work better with headphones closer to 600. The high voltage changes needed to drive high impedance headphones do not carry a lot of current, but they do carry much detail. I tend to believe that high impedance headphones will be more responsive and defined than lower impedance headphones, but their hardware requirements are different. Small mobile devices don't have high voltages in them to generate signals for high impedance headphones, which is why low impedance is standardized, and even then, many devices lack the power to drive the bass on them. A dedicated amp is the extra hardware to fill out a quality signal. So even poor quality headphones can sound better when driven by the appropriate source. In the end, your headphones will not improve the sound significantly if you do not have an amplifier to back them up, though I still think higher impedance phones will result in a better sound.
Question:	How does this compare to the Audio Technica M50x
Answer:	For me, the 2 sound very different from each other. The soundstage of the M50x is pretty narrow while the soundstage of the DT 770 (I’ve only heard the 250 ohm) is very wide for a closed-back. The sound signature of the DT 770 is actually more neutral than the M50x. The M50x is commonly attributed with a V shaped signature, but it’s a pretty wide/flattened V (more like a smile or reverse check mark). The DT 770 (250 ohm) has one of the more neutral signatures out of headphones in this price range/class (you can look up the sound graphs for it to see it’s pretty neutral). I like the velour pads of the DT 770 way more than the pleather pads of the M50x (I will say it’s a big improvement over the M50 pads). The M50x folds up quite well while the DT 770 doesn’t fold up at all. If you plan on packing it, the M50x will take up less space even if you used a case for it. The detachable cable of the M50x also allows it to be stored without risking damage to the cable. Of course, if you’re getting the 250 ohm DT 770, you’re going to need an amplifier while the M50x can be run without one (though it does sound better with one). I’d honestly recommend that you pick out between 5-10 tracks from your library that you know really well and listen to how both headphones reproduce the audio because 1) your ears are unique to you, 2) your preferences for certain specific details are unique to you, and 3) the more headphones you try the more you’ll be able to pick out the sound that you like the most. I modified my M50x with the hybrid Brainwavs Pads and added 2 small vents in the cups to cut the low and high down and make it more neutral as well as open up the soundstage to have better separation (and velour-leather hybrid provides benefits from both worlds regarding comfort-to-leakage). I power the DT 770 with a Phil Jones Big Head DAC/amp.

Question:	Could i use this with vinyl turntables
Answer:	33.3 RPM records require RIAA equalization and most phono cartridges require very low noise high sensitivity input gain stages, which the DBX 286 does not have and which makes this unit unsuitable as a turntable preamp. However, if your records are vocal speech only and you can provide the 286 with an adjustable line level input signal, you might be able to use the unit as a speech processor for your turntable. If you are unsure of what I am talking about, then the answer to your question is "no".
Question:	If i set it up with an interface would i set it up like this? mic > pre amp > interface > monitors/headphones please explain proper setup
Answer:	John, you would plug MIC > DBX 286s > LINE INPUT of your interface. Receive the line input signal in your DAW and adjust your settings as necessary on the CH strip. Your monitors would plug in to your interface as normal. If you have further questions , please let us know!
Question:	My plan is to use a Microphone - into XLR - then into Channel 1 on my Focusrite 18i20. How does someone use this as an 'INSERT"? What is an INSERT
Answer:	I'd imagine more or less you'll be doing this the same way I have mine set up. You run your XLR into the back input of the DBX 286s, then use a 1/4" audio out into your first channel preamp on your Focusrite interface. Currently Focusrite cannot get a signal with WDM (only ASIO gets a signal) if you try using the 1/4" audio out into the rear inputs. Only the front ones work until they address it with a patch.
Question:	Will this prevent clipping? My music has a lot of soft parts and parts where I'm shouting. Thanks
Answer:	The only thing I use to prevent mic clip is mic staging and proper leveling in side what ever DAW your using. In other words sing lower parts louder by moving to the mic and loud parts lower by moving away from the mic. So the DBX is pretty good for the price but without proper mic staging could add to your problem.
