9 best computer recording interfaces

A computer recording interface, often referred to as an audio interface or sound card, is a hardware device used for connecting microphones, musical instruments, and other audio equipment to a computer for the purpose of recording and playback. These interfaces play a crucial role in capturing high-quality audio and providing low-latency monitoring for various audio production applications. Here are key aspects related to computer recording interfaces and their associated components:

  1. Audio Input/Output: A computer recording interface typically features a variety of input and output ports, such as XLR, TRS, and MIDI connections. These ports allow you to connect microphones, instruments, headphones, and external devices like synthesizers or MIDI controllers.

  2. Preamps: Many audio interfaces come equipped with built-in preamps. Preamps amplify the low-level signals from microphones and instruments, boosting them to a suitable level for recording. High-quality preamps can significantly impact the audio quality.

  3. Digital Conversion: Audio interfaces include analog-to-digital converters (ADC) for converting analog audio signals into digital data that your computer can process and record. They also feature digital-to-analog converters (DAC) for playback, converting digital audio back into analog signals for monitoring.

  4. Sample Rate and Bit Depth: Audio interfaces support different sample rates and bit depths. Higher sample rates (e.g., 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 96kHz, or 192kHz) and bit depths (e.g., 16-bit or 24-bit) offer greater audio fidelity but can result in larger file sizes.

  5. Latency: Low-latency performance is essential for real-time monitoring during recording and for minimizing delay in digital audio production. High-quality interfaces are designed to minimize latency, which is crucial for musicians and producers.

  6. Phantom Power: Many audio interfaces provide phantom power (+48V) to condenser microphones that require it for operation. Phantom power is typically switchable on individual channels.

  7. Accessories: Accessories for computer recording interfaces can include cables, adapters, and rack mounts. These are essential for connecting various audio equipment and integrating the interface into a studio setup.

  8. Microphone Accessories: Microphone accessories such as shock mounts, pop filters, and windscreens can help improve the audio quality and reduce unwanted noise during recording.

  9. Musical Instruments: Audio interfaces are commonly used to connect musical instruments like guitars, keyboards, and synthesizers to a computer. This allows musicians to record and produce music digitally.

  10. Software Compatibility: Audio interfaces often come bundled with digital audio workstation (DAW) software or are compatible with popular DAWs like Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, and more. Compatibility with your chosen software is essential.

  11. Connectivity: Interfaces can connect to a computer via USB, Thunderbolt, FireWire, or PCIe, depending on the model. The choice of connectivity depends on your computer's ports and your performance needs.

In summary, a computer recording interface is a critical component of any home or professional audio recording setup. It serves as the bridge between your audio equipment and your computer, ensuring high-quality audio capture and playback for various audio production purposes, from music recording to podcasting and more.Preamps, accessories, microphones, and musical instruments all play a part in creating a complete and functional recording system.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell
Answer: Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support
Question: What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a
Answer: Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support
Question: Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side
Answer: Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support

User questions & answers

Question: Is the software disk or downloads
Answer: The Software is downloads. ProTools first requires internet connection and has a small cloud coverage, they want you to buy more space. My ProTools sessions won’t open in ProTools first. I believe the AIR Instruments it comes with requires an Ilok dongle and Ilok account for activation. The HDH 40 Headphones are cheap made compared to the HDH 50s. The Mic is ok, the interface is nice made and nice looking. It’s worth the money Guitar Center still carries the only interface this one isn’t really circulated yet!
Question: Is it ever in stock? been waiting for a month now with it ordered an i keep getting a different arrival time.. is it worth the wait
Answer: Yes. I too received different delivery dates. It arrived as soon as it was in stock. It is worth the wait.
Question: will it still work if it connects from a usb c to a macbook that has usb c connection?, will it work the same with a usb c/usb c cable
Answer: It will you can even use adapters to change its connection to usb or thunderbolt
Question: Hi, can i use this with fl studio
Answer: Hi, M-Audio support here! Thanks for your question. I can confirm the AIR 192|4 interface in this package will be suitable as an audio interface for FL Studio! I hope this helps and If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us directly - [email protected] Thanks, Krishan

Question: Why studio 24 is cheaper than the audiobox itwo? is not supossed to be a better one
Answer: Your mixer is just the mixer....you need to hook it up to an amp and speakers or headphones to be used properly...but again the choice is yours.... Now to answer the question....if a phone is hooked up by Bluetooth...it uses channel 3....and is in stereo...but it should not be heard from your phone...it's not hooked up properly. ...you should hear it from the outputs of the mixer...with volume up on your controls....and hooked up to your separate amp and speaker set up ....it's a small versatile mixer unit and I like mine lots...if that helps anyone.....

User questions & answers

Question: It appears that phantom power gets switched on all 4 mic pres simultaneously. Can I use dynamic & condenser mics together without causing damage
Answer: Because the one in the front is NOT powered. The rear inputs can power mics or active pickups, up to 48v. I run 9v batteries in all my active guitars, so they're already powered, so I just run all my guitars into the front input. If I'm recording my 4x12 cab, I use the XLR in the back with my SM57.
Question: will this power a microphone that requires phantom power? sorry if this is a dumb question, im new to XLR microphones
Answer: Your question has me curious. The data speed for this device will not get close to the rates requiring a cable with the thunderbolt 3 type throughout. The audio stream will get there just as fast with their stock cable and with a reasonably priced ($6-10) usb type c cable. The nicer cables are more about throughput than latency.
Question: Can it write four tracks simultaneosly
Answer: Audio is routed from the computer through USB-C to Evo. There are two 1/4” outputs on the back of the Evo to plug into speakers.
Question: Does this include a usb power cable that goes from the interface to the computer
Answer: My interface remembers its gain settings when rebooting. Both when I power cycle the unit and when my computer power cycles. Make sure you download the most up to date drivers for it.
