11 best mixers with preamps
Mixers with preamps are essential components in live sound and music production setups, especially in the realm of powered mixers used for concerts, live events, and recording studios. Here's what you need to know about mixers with preamps:
Function: Mixers with preamps combine two critical functions in audio signal processing: mixing and preamplification. The mixer portion allows you to blend multiple audio sources (such as microphones, instruments, or playback devices), adjust their individual volumes, and control other aspects of the sound, like equalization and effects. The preamp section boosts the weak audio signals from microphones or instruments to a level suitable for mixing and further processing.
Preamp Importance: The preamp stage is crucial because it amplifies the low-level signals from microphones and instruments, ensuring that they are at an optimal level for processing and mixing. Preamps also contribute to the overall sound quality, affecting factors such as clarity, warmth, and coloration.
Integration: In powered mixers, the preamp section is integrated into the mixer unit itself. This integration simplifies setup and reduces the need for additional standalone preamp units. It also streamlines the signal chain, minimizing the potential for noise and interference.
Inputs: Mixers with preamps typically have a variety of input channels, each equipped with its preamp. These channels can accommodate microphones, line-level instruments, and other audio sources. The preamps on each channel often offer features like gain control, phantom power (for condenser microphones), and high-pass filters.
Flexibility: Powered mixers with preamps are versatile tools suitable for various audio applications. They can be used in live sound reinforcement for concerts and events, recording studios for tracking multiple sources simultaneously, and in broadcast setups.
Built-in Effects: Some powered mixers come with built-in digital effects processors that can enhance the audio with effects like reverb, delay, chorus, and more. This is an added advantage for live sound engineers and musicians.
Portability: Powered mixers with preamps are designed for portability, making them convenient for gigging musicians and mobile sound reinforcement setups. They often include built-in power amplifiers, further simplifying the setup.
Control Interface: These mixers typically feature a control surface with knobs, faders, and other controls for adjusting channel levels, equalization, effects parameters, and overall mix settings.
In summary, mixers with preamps are integral to live sound and music production, providing a centralized hub for mixing and amplifying various audio sources. They are versatile, portable, and designed to enhance audio quality and flexibility in a range of applications, from live performances to studio recording.

User questions & answers
Question: | How many microphones can I connect to the mixers. Will it be able to have |
Answer: | No cables where not included, I had to convert my 1/8" to 1/4 with an adapter, then I had to buy 1/4in male Y-cable but your needs could be different, all of the connections are 1/4inch if you look closely at the picture. As for usb mic, unless you are able to find a converter that will convert to 1/4inch you cant use it, or you will have to buy a new mic because when you get into using so many converters, in my experience, the sound isnt as good bad quality so I wouldn't recommend this. I hope this can helped you, if you have further questions/concerns, look up the brand/manufacturer they may have help/support |
Question: | does this come with a/c power |
Answer: | You could if you in put mic in 1 channel with balance all the way 1 direction, and then guitar in another channel with the balance all the way the other direction. You would then have 2 seperated mono recordings. Easily edited in recording software. |
Question: | Does it come with the cable to plug it in to the computer, and i have an usb mic what kinda jack should i buy for it |
Answer: | Here's what the manual states: The XENYX mixer line has built-in USB connectivity, allowing stereo signals to be sent to and from the mixer and a computer. The audio sent from the mixer to a computer is identical to the MAIN MIX. Audio being sent to the mixer from a computer can be routed to the main mix with the 2-TR/USB TO MAIN button. Connect the USB type B plug into the USB jack on the mixer, and the other end into a free USB port on your computer. There are no required drivers, but we recommend that PC users install the included ASIO driver. The driver can also be downloaded from behringer.com.I don't know what OS you are using, but you might want to make sure that your computer is set up for stereo input/output via your preferences. You could also check to see if you have the correct drivers installed from Behringer, and lastly, make sure you have the 2TR/USB to MAIN properly depress and you can also route it to a set of headphones via the SOURCE 2TR/USB. Also not sure if this is what you are hearing through headphones or mains (?). Are your main channels routed independently? So when you say USB Out, is that from a stereo source or from the PA? |
Question: | Does "2 Bus Mixer" mean that two inputs (eg guitar and vocal) can be separated in a recording software? Thanks |
Answer: | This is what I have it installed in:http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/odyssey-cxp1110w-carpeted-pro-combo-case-w-wheels?skuId=site1sku804787000000000 |

User questions & answers
Question: | I didn't really understand the inputs on this mixer. So I have 3 electric guitars, and an electronic drum kit. Can all of these, with mic,be connected |
Answer: | This mixer does not have sufficient mono channels for your application. Channels 2-3 and 4-5 are stereo inputs (meaning they are contolled with the same fader). Some of the larger Xenyx mixers will get you the inputs you need.... something with at least 5 distinct faders to control each instrument's mix individually.Hope this helps. :-) |
Question: | Does this mixer support 48V Phantom Power |
Answer: | Most microphones do not require 48 volts of phantom power. Many condenser microphones only require somewhere between 4 and 12 volts. You should check your mic. It looks like this is a 15 volt feed. |
Question: | Can this mixer connect to a PC via a soundcard |
Answer: | Yes, to an analog soundcard. All you need is a 1/8" stereo to dual-RCA cord. Mixer has both input and output RCA capability, so you could feed the output of the mixer to the line/mic of the soundcard or feed the output of the soundcard (line out/speaker out) to the input of the mixer. There is also a headphone jack on the mixer so that could also be patched back to the soundcard's line in/mic. For me, I am usually running the PC speaker out to the mixer RCA input -- the volume is controlled by the Main, and then I can either use headphones from the mixer or run the 1/4" output into my guitar amp. Hope this helps. |
Question: | What does the 2 track input do |
Answer: | The 2 track input allows you to connect an external music source to the xenxyx mixer and then into an amplifier with speakers or headphones using the outputs located near the top. The external music source can be anything that has the red and white RCA outputs such as a cassette/CD player or VCR/disc player (the red and white input/output for the 2 track are called RCA connectors). This is so you can plug in your CD player and also a microphone and an instrument that has a 1/4" output such as a guitar or electric piano and have it all mixed together. Just below the 2 track input are a couple of buttons that allow you to choose whichever output you want, either headphones or amplified speakers (main out). The 2 track outputs on the mixer will allow you to send the vocals and/or instrument mix to a recording device that has the red and white RCA inputs. I hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | how to plug into speakers |
Answer: | It's not a "powered mixer" you have to plug the main output into an amp then the speakers into the amp. Or plug the main output into "powered speakers" like krk rokit 8's. |
Question: | How much time does it work on batteries |
Answer: | The manual that comes with it says 4 hours. Are there any owners who have real world experience with battery life? |
Question: | This mixer can hold up to 4 mics, correct? I'm looking for something to use in group discussions |
Answer: | This sound board has 5 XLR phantom powered inputs. Therefore, you may have up to five microphones using this type of input cable. In addition to this, you have 1/4" cable inputs, and RCA inputs for extra mic's, or sound from other devices, such as your computer or a CD player. For these reasons, this board makes a great tool for doing group discussions. |
Question: | what is the difference between the 1002b and the |
Answer: | Quite a bit of difference. The amount of XLR connections available, the 1002B has 5 compared to the 2 available on the 1002. There are 2 monitor/fx sends on the 1002B as to 1 on the 1002. All of the channels have EQ on the 1002B, the 1002 does not. The 1002B uses slider faders for the channels as compared to rotary faders on the 1002. The 1002B utilizes a power switch to turn the mixer on/off, the 1002 does not have a power switch. The 1002B offers the option of using batteries to power the mixer for portable use, not the 1002. I could not find anything about the 1002 shipping with rack ear adapters. The 1002B came with rack ears making installation in my gear rack a breeze. All of these observations are from me looking at the images on the Behringer website for the 1002 as I do not own one. I do own the 1002B. Hope this helps with your decision. |

User questions & answers
Question: | There are three holes underneath profxj10v3. are they for mounting |
Answer: | Yes, there is an optional adapter you can get to mount it atop a mic stand for easy live access. |
Question: | Would like to get this mixer but some people say in reviews there are major issues with Windows 10; can a Mackie specialist please clarify |
Answer: | I’m not a specialist but I just downloaded the drivers from their website and it works perfectly for me. |
Question: | It says 2x4 usb i/o. does that mean i can get 4 channels into my daw simultaneously |
Answer: | Hello, 2x4 means that you have a stereo send to the computer and two stereo returns from your computer. The stereo output (1-2) to your computer can be used for recording, VOIP, etc, and you can return two distinct stereo tracks (1-2, 3-4) from your Mac/PC giving you the ability to route audio from different applications (DAW, Spotify, Youtube, etc) or sources (.mp3/WAV playback) from within your computer. |
Question: | I see that the mackie profx12v3 has a 48v phantom power switch. can non-phantom and phantom mikes be used at the same time? one be on, others off |
Answer: | Yes. Condenser microphones often require 48V phantom power. When the 48V phantom power switch is engaged on ProFX series mixers all channels have this extra voltage available. With phantom power, the voltage is effectively invisible to balanced microphones that do not use it, which includes most dynamic microphones. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I hook this up to my laptop? There was no USB connection in the box. Does this need to be purchased separately |
Answer: | If you look at Page 7 of the manual, you can feed your computer sound card inputs using the ALT 3/4 Outputs. While it is not a USB connection, it does allow audio to be captured on the computer depending on what program you are using. |
Question: | What function do the channel insert ports on the back serve? Am I able to use those to send each individual channel out to an audio interface |
Answer: | Each channel has an effect send/insert. Yes, you can send individual channels for processing, then send back to the mix. For example, you may want a compressor on channel 1, a phaser on channel 2, etc. There is also a pair of Aux Sends that will work with the entire mix. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Can you route the audio inputs into separate audio outputs with this |
Answer: | Yeah you can, with limitations. The mute buttons route the channel to a second output. So basically you can have two buss groups. You can also play a trick with the Aux send, using it as another buss. You can't have each individual channel on it's own output, however. |
Question: | how connect to computer for broadcast |
Answer: | I connect mine to my mac using a Griffin Technology iMic - The original USB Stereo Input and Output Audio Adapter. The "In" for the adaptor goes into the Main Out on the mixer and the Out of the adaptor goes into the Tape In on the mixer. Hope that helps you |

- Input devices volume control should be set around 70%. If you hear distortion, lower the channel volume until no distortion is heard. Then increase volume using the Master fader, headphone volume wheel or volume control on your speakers.
- Use the mixer's gain knob sparingly. Increase your input device’s volume first. Only increasing volume settings on the mixer may cause a high noise level.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i connect the rca jacks to my stereo aux inputs and use this as a pa system |
Answer: | Arcane Scroll is mostly correct. Instead of each device that is connected to your television requiring Ethernet, there is a 100Mb connection inside the HDMI cable. This is on all 1.4 and newer HDMI cords. You would be surprised as to how many new devices are capable of using this technology. As Arcane Scroll stated, the rest of the individuals have NO idea what they are talking about and should be ignored. |
Question: | I need to add two mics to my current mixer through a line in channel, will this work |
Answer: | I know you have to send from A and B to a power source. An amp. I have A going to a Jcm 900 and B going to an ampeg amp. Need power for both |
Question: | Can i input a corded mic directly in to the mixer and then output directly to two yamaha dbr10 speakers |
Answer: | Yes, Bass amp 1 goes to A channel and Bass amp 2 to B channel. Press the A and B switch. your bass goes in the input. |
Question: | Can this be used with line-level inputs |
Answer: | All three of the 1/4" inputs are mono. This is basically a switchable "Y" adapter. But it works both ways: 2 inputs out to one amp, or one input to 2 amps. |
