14 best audio mixers
Audio mixers, also known as mixing consoles or soundboards, are essential tools in live sound reinforcement, recording studios, and music production. They are used to control and manipulate audio signals from various sources to create a balanced and coherent sound. Here's what you need to know about audio mixers:
Basic Function: The primary function of an audio mixer is to take multiple audio input signals (e.g., microphones, instruments, playback devices) and adjust their levels, combine them, and route them to one or more output destinations (e.g., speakers, recording devices).
Channels: Mixers come in different channel configurations, such as 4, 8, 16, 32, or more channels. Each channel typically has its own input, level controls, equalization (EQ), and routing options.
Input Types: Mixers can accommodate various input types, including XLR connectors for microphones, 1/4-inch jacks for instruments, RCA connectors for consumer audio devices, and digital inputs for modern equipment.
Microphone Preamps: Many mixers include microphone preamplifiers (preamps) on their channels to boost the low-level signals from microphones to line-level signals suitable for mixing.
EQ Controls: Most mixers offer EQ controls on each channel, allowing you to adjust the tone of individual inputs. Common EQ controls include bass, midrange, and treble adjustments.
Auxiliary Sends: Mixers often have auxiliary sends, which allow you to send a copy of an input signal to external effects processors or monitor mixes. This is crucial for providing monitor mixes to performers on stage.
Pan and Balance Controls: Pan controls enable you to position an input signal within the stereo field, while balance controls adjust the balance between the left and right channels.
Faders: Faders are used to control the volume level of each channel. They are typically vertical sliders that you can move up or down.
Busses: Busses are used to group and send multiple channels to a common output. This is useful for creating submixes or sending multiple channels to a particular effect processor.
Digital Mixers: Modern audio mixers often incorporate digital signal processing (DSP) and digital control. Digital mixers offer advanced features like recallable presets, effects processing, and precise control over parameters.
Powered Mixers: Some mixers are also integrated with power amplifiers, making them self-contained units for small PA systems. These are known as powered mixers.
Recording Interfaces: Many audio mixers offer USB or Firewire connectivity, allowing you to connect them to a computer for recording and playback. This is especially common in home studios.
MIDI Control: Advanced mixers may support MIDI control for integration with other MIDI devices and software.
Rack-Mountable: Some mixers are designed to be rack-mounted for easy integration into professional audio setups.
Price Range: The price of audio mixers varies widely, from budget-friendly models suitable for small setups to high-end, feature-rich consoles used in professional studios and live sound applications.
In summary, audio mixers are versatile tools that play a crucial role in audio production and live sound reinforcement. They allow for precise control and manipulation of audio signals, making them essential for achieving a polished and well-balanced audio mix in various settings, from concerts and recording studios to home music production. The choice of a mixer should align with your specific needs and budget.

Yamaha has always strived to provide sound engineers with the purest possible signal instead of added processing or color to give it a "signature" sound, and the MG Series is no exception. Embracing this philosophy of transparent sound, these mixing consoles deliver a level of sonic purity and sound quality that is unmatched in their class. This is where it all starts. Everything you do as a sound engineer is dependent on the quality of your preamps, which determines the direction your mix will take, and ultimately how good it is going to sound. MG Series mixing consoles feature Yamaha's studio-grade discrete class-A D-PRE preamps, which utilize an inverted Darlington circuit comprising two cascading transistors in a configuration that provides more power with lower impedance. Delivering fat, natural sounding bass and smooth, soaring highs, with very low distortion, D-PRE preamps possess an impressively wide frequency range that allow them to handle signal from any audio source without overly amplifying any specific elements of the sound. Having such a pure sonic platform to build on will ultimately save you time and effort by eliminating the need for excessive EQing or additional effects processing in order to "fix" your mix.
- 6 channel standalone mixer (No USB)
- Featuring studio grade discrete class A D PRE preamps with inverted Darlington circuit: Providing fat, natural sounding bass and smooth, soaring highs
- 3 band EQ and high pass filters give you maximum control and eliminate unwanted noise, resulting in a cleaner mix
- 1 Knob compressors allow easy control: Resulting in livelier guitars, punchier bass lines, a tighter snare and a cleaner vocal sound.
- MG Series mixers feature a rugged, impact resistant, powder coated metal chassis
User questions & answers
Question: | Can i connect mg06x-6 to tv |
Answer: | here's one: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Hosa/Stereo-1-4-Inch-Male-TRS-to-Dual-Male-RCA-Insert-Cable.gc |
Question: | Can i connect its out to irig pre (phone-audio interface) which ultimately connected to phones for recording over iphone/ipads |
Answer: | This mixer with its quality mic preamps (real ones, with plenty of adjustable gain) , EQ, channel output volume, etc. is far superior to the iRig Pre. I tried the iRig Pre (and reviewed it) and didn't like it. To emulate the iRig Pre connections, get a TRRS (male) adapter you plug into your phone/tablet that breaks out separate speaker 1/8" TRS (female) and mic 1/8" TRS (female) connectors. You could use either the XLR or the 1/4" outputs of the mixer as input to the mic 1 /8" TRS connector on the adapter. Unlike the iRig Pre, with a mixer like this you have the option of listening to the realtime output of the mixer from its headphone jack or plug your headphones into the speaker 1/8" (female) connector on the adapter to hear it how the phone/ tablet is recording it (which can be time-delayed making it difficult to speak live while listening to non-realtime audio). |
Question: | Are the 1/4 inch outputs TRS for balanced signal to another TRS input? I'm planning on using this as a simple mixer for input to a Bose L1 Compact |
Answer: | The outputs are Stereo outputs, both L and R. (shown on the blue areas of image) |
Question: | Can headphones and stereo out be be controlled independently? I want to listen to either headphones OR speakers, not both at once |
Answer: | On the MG10XU there are two volumes controls. Stereo out and Monitor/Headphones out. I can't tell if this has both knobs or not. You can check the manual for the technical diagram. |

Yamaha MG Series Mixers
For more than a century, Yamaha has been building a legacy of superior craftsmanship and innovation exemplified in all of our products, from an unrivaled catalog of world-class musical instruments to touring-grade professional audio. Now in its third incarnation, the MG Series embodies this pursuit of design excellence, and incorporates some of the same technologies developed for use in high-end professional consoles, including studio-quality preamps, powerful digital processing, and a rugged, reliable construction.
With an intuitive, easy-to-use interface, the MG Series boasts an extensive lineup of compact mixing consoles with models ranging from six to twenty channels, suitable for a diverse range of users and applications. For installed, recording, or live music settings, the solid construction and flexible design of these consoles lets you shape your sound with confidence, continually delivering a level of sound quality and reliability unrivaled in its class.
D-PRE (Discrete Class-A Mic Preamps)
This is where it all starts. Everything you do as a sound engineer is dependent on the quality of your preamps, which determines the direction your mix will take, and ultimately how good it is going to sound. MG Series mixing consoles feature Yamaha's studio-grade discrete class-A D-PRE preamps, which utilize an inverted Darlington circuit comprising two cascading transistors in a configuration that provides more power with lower impedance.
EQ and High-pass Filters
There's nothing more useful than reliable equalization when you need nuanced management of your tone. The MG Series benefits from Yamaha's unparalleled experience in designing pro audio gear, featuring 3-band equalizers on all mono channels for precise control of your sound. High-pass filter allows you to eliminate unwanted low-frequency noise, for a smoother, cleaner mix.
1-Knob Compressors
Compression plays an essential role in just about any recording or sound reinforcement environment by altering the level of dynamics of an audio signal when you need livelier guitars, punchier bass lines, a tighter snare, or a cleaner vocal sound. However, it can take countless hours to master the complexities of even the most basic outboard compression units and use them effectively.
Built-in SPX Digital Effects (MG06X)
For musical and non-musical applications, effects processing adds polish and professionalism to the mix. The MG06X features Yamaha's SPX digital multi-effect processor, offering a comprehensive suite of editable digital effects perfect for enhancing your mix, whether adding depth to a speaking engagement or breathing new color and atmosphere into a live performance.
High Quality Sound Op-amp
The head amp determines sound quality, and op-amp integrated circuits are one of the most important parts in the head amp circuit. MG Series mixers feature new, high-quality, custommade MG01 op-amps that we developed in cooperation with the semiconductor manufacturer. We worked directly with the semiconductor manufacturer to focus on sound quality first.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell |
Answer: | Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a |
Answer: | Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side |
Answer: | Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use this mixer connect to speaker , subwoofer and dj controller together |
Answer: | I’m assuming you would go with your DJ controller into this unit, then you could send the out to the sub and PA speaker. You might also be able to run a separate aux out to the sub and just give it more when you need to. Personally I would get a mackie 802 before I buy this. |
Question: | can i hook this to my crown power amp |
Answer: | Yes, I hook mine up to 2 crown Amps. I run them bridged made use one for the left channel and one for the right channel. |
Question: | Can this be used for live performance with output to PA and monitor ( one vocal and acoustic guitar |
Answer: | Yes you can. You have stereo monitor outs (called Control Room) as well as main outs, and they have independent controls. The control room outs share the same level as the HEADPHONES out, though. You do have an extra AUX out that can serve as a different send to a monitor, but it is mono. |
Question: | Is there a USB output |
Answer: | No USB Output on this mixer. Thank you, Sam Ash Direct |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use a USB headset with this |
Answer: | We found that if you have the GoXLR, and a USB headset, that we can still get the sound over. Put a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cord from the headset output on the GoXLR, and into the Line In port on the back of a computer. Then, use the 'Listen to this device' option in the sound settings to redirect sound from 3.5mm Line In, and output to the USB headset. Can use a guide like https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/126383-listen-microphone-through-playback-device-windows.html to see the process. Couple things to note - If you hear a buzzing or feedback, you may need to get a quality 3.5mm Ground Noise Loop isolator, and be sure to get a quality 3.5mm cable, otherwise the sound may sound a bit degraded. |
Question: | Can i use this to get xbox audio through to my pc speakers |
Answer: | Yes, pretty easily I might add. |
Question: | Does this have phantom power for the xlr |
Answer: | Yes, it supports 70 Db of gain in addition to the phantom power. So it can run nearly and microphone you throw at it. |
Question: | Is this Mac compatible |
Answer: | Currently, windows only. |

User questions & answers
Question: | There are three holes underneath profxj10v3. are they for mounting |
Answer: | Yes, there is an optional adapter you can get to mount it atop a mic stand for easy live access. |
Question: | Would like to get this mixer but some people say in reviews there are major issues with Windows 10; can a Mackie specialist please clarify |
Answer: | I’m not a specialist but I just downloaded the drivers from their website and it works perfectly for me. |
Question: | It says 2x4 usb i/o. does that mean i can get 4 channels into my daw simultaneously |
Answer: | Hello, 2x4 means that you have a stereo send to the computer and two stereo returns from your computer. The stereo output (1-2) to your computer can be used for recording, VOIP, etc, and you can return two distinct stereo tracks (1-2, 3-4) from your Mac/PC giving you the ability to route audio from different applications (DAW, Spotify, Youtube, etc) or sources (.mp3/WAV playback) from within your computer. |
Question: | I see that the mackie profx12v3 has a 48v phantom power switch. can non-phantom and phantom mikes be used at the same time? one be on, others off |
Answer: | Yes. Condenser microphones often require 48V phantom power. When the 48V phantom power switch is engaged on ProFX series mixers all channels have this extra voltage available. With phantom power, the voltage is effectively invisible to balanced microphones that do not use it, which includes most dynamic microphones. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hey guys does this come with an a/c adapter? That one dude in the reviews said his did not |
Answer: | Mine certainly did come with AC adapter. It can not function without. It’s a great device. I wish it had an on/off switch. I unplug the power cord from the rear of the unit as the AC adapter is plugged into a Monster voltage protector with the other audio gear so to me it’s just easier this way. |
Question: | Can it be used to have two audio devices connected to one set of speakers? If so, will they be able to play at the same time |
Answer: | Yes. That is exactly why I purchased this device. It mixes four sources to one output. If you just have passive speakers, you will need amplifier, but probably your "set of speakers" does include amplifier. |
Question: | Are others having problems with hum or ground noise on channel 1 when using condenser microphones with phantom power |
Answer: | I Just Bought this device and powered it up adn the Hum/Ground noise Happens even without the condenser microphone switch off or ON, with or WITHOUT the microphone plugged in. |
Question: | Description: "It has 2 1/4" inputs and 3 sets of stereo RCA inputs that are mixed to MONO." Are the L and R inputs really mixed together |
Answer: | apparently Amazon confused the description. There is a Rolls MX51 and a Rolls MX51s. The non-s has 1/4" inputs and mixes to mono. The "s" model had 1/8" input and XLR input and mixes stereo. |

User questions & answers
Question: | how to plug into speakers |
Answer: | It's not a "powered mixer" you have to plug the main output into an amp then the speakers into the amp. Or plug the main output into "powered speakers" like krk rokit 8's. |
Question: | How much time does it work on batteries |
Answer: | The manual that comes with it says 4 hours. Are there any owners who have real world experience with battery life? |
Question: | This mixer can hold up to 4 mics, correct? I'm looking for something to use in group discussions |
Answer: | This sound board has 5 XLR phantom powered inputs. Therefore, you may have up to five microphones using this type of input cable. In addition to this, you have 1/4" cable inputs, and RCA inputs for extra mic's, or sound from other devices, such as your computer or a CD player. For these reasons, this board makes a great tool for doing group discussions. |
Question: | what is the difference between the 1002b and the |
Answer: | Quite a bit of difference. The amount of XLR connections available, the 1002B has 5 compared to the 2 available on the 1002. There are 2 monitor/fx sends on the 1002B as to 1 on the 1002. All of the channels have EQ on the 1002B, the 1002 does not. The 1002B uses slider faders for the channels as compared to rotary faders on the 1002. The 1002B utilizes a power switch to turn the mixer on/off, the 1002 does not have a power switch. The 1002B offers the option of using batteries to power the mixer for portable use, not the 1002. I could not find anything about the 1002 shipping with rack ear adapters. The 1002B came with rack ears making installation in my gear rack a breeze. All of these observations are from me looking at the images on the Behringer website for the 1002 as I do not own one. I do own the 1002B. Hope this helps with your decision. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I add echo and reverb at to the mic |
Answer: | Hi. Any of the onboard effects will work with the with Mic channels. One effect at a time, though. |
Question: | Is this mixer capable of "mix minus" configuration? If so how is it done? I cant seem to get it to produce any audio from the "fx send" port |
Answer: | been trying to determine this for my own setup. thus far it seems No as the AUX is post fader. im trying to isolate the mic on the FX send and have it removed from the main mix.. nothing seems to allow this to happen. i can get the FX send to work but if the usb and the FX send are connected to the same source, both signals carry the mic audio... |
Question: | Can this do multitrack recording |
Answer: | This is a mixer and not any type of recording device. This operates on USB and does not have any recording capability built-in. This is used to record multiple sources at one time and make that into one Stereo/Mono audio output that can be used with a recording software, streaming software, or even a live speaker system. You can record the main output via computer, but even then, this will all be one audio stream, not one for each separate channel. |
Question: | who made it |
Answer: | Probably someone who works for Yamaha. |

Built-in SPX Digital Effects
For musical and non-musical applications, effects processing adds polish and professionalism to the mix. The MG X / XU models feature Yamaha's SPX digital multi-effect processor, offering a comprehensive suite of editable digital effects perfect for enhancing your mix, whether adding depth to a speaking engagement or breathing new color and atmosphere into a live performance.

Question: | How do I hook this up to my laptop? There was no USB connection in the box. Does this need to be purchased separately |
Answer: | If you look at Page 7 of the manual, you can feed your computer sound card inputs using the ALT 3/4 Outputs. While it is not a USB connection, it does allow audio to be captured on the computer depending on what program you are using. |
Question: | What function do the channel insert ports on the back serve? Am I able to use those to send each individual channel out to an audio interface |
Answer: | Each channel has an effect send/insert. Yes, you can send individual channels for processing, then send back to the mix. For example, you may want a compressor on channel 1, a phaser on channel 2, etc. There is also a pair of Aux Sends that will work with the entire mix. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Can you route the audio inputs into separate audio outputs with this |
Answer: | Yeah you can, with limitations. The mute buttons route the channel to a second output. So basically you can have two buss groups. You can also play a trick with the Aux send, using it as another buss. You can't have each individual channel on it's own output, however. |
Question: | how connect to computer for broadcast |
Answer: | I connect mine to my mac using a Griffin Technology iMic - The original USB Stereo Input and Output Audio Adapter. The "In" for the adaptor goes into the Main Out on the mixer and the Out of the adaptor goes into the Tape In on the mixer. Hope that helps you |
