8 best generic violins
Generic violins refer to instruments that are not associated with a specific brand or maker and are typically produced in larger quantities. These violins are often mass-produced and sold at a lower price point compared to handcrafted or artisanal violins. Here are some key points about generic violins:
Construction: Generic violins are typically made using standardized manufacturing processes and materials. They may not have the same level of attention to detail and craftsmanship as high-end, handcrafted violins.
Materials: The materials used in generic violins may vary, but they often include spruce for the top (soundboard) and maple for the back and sides. The fingerboard and tailpiece are usually made of ebony or other hardwoods.
Sound Quality: The sound quality of a generic violin can vary widely. While some generic violins can produce a decent tone, others may have limitations in terms of their projection, resonance, and overall sound quality when compared to more expensive, handcrafted instruments.
Price: Generic violins are known for their affordability. They are a popular choice for beginners or students who are just starting to learn how to play the violin and may not want to invest in a high-end instrument initially.
Setup: To optimize the playability and sound quality of a generic violin, it may require a professional setup. This can involve adjusting the bridge, nut, and strings to ensure that the instrument plays well and produces a good tone.
Accessories: Generic violins are often sold as part of beginner packages that include essential accessories such as a case, bow, rosin, and sometimes even a shoulder rest. These packages are designed to provide beginners with everything they need to get started.
Upgrades: As a player advances in skill, they may choose to upgrade to a higher-quality violin. Generic violins are a good starting point for beginners, but serious musicians may eventually seek out more refined and professionally crafted instruments.
Maintenance: Like all violins, generic instruments require proper care and maintenance to ensure they remain in good playing condition. This includes regular tuning, cleaning, and occasional adjustments by a luthier.
In summary, generic violins are affordable options for beginners and students who are just starting their journey with the violin. While they may not have the same level of craftsmanship and sound quality as high-end violins, they can serve as a suitable starting point for learning and practice.

User questions & answers
Question: | So, there are 4 strings? a, d, e, g string |
Answer: | Rob, no longer have the packaging; however, Amazon's photo of product has "USA" printed on it--- whether that means made in USA--- don't know.I have purchased the blade (5, I think it was) and am impressed by its sharpness continuing after much use. I saw something saying this product had been stopped by seller (manufacturer?) & would be disappointed if no longer available.. |
Question: | I received my set of strings , but how am i supposed to know which is Which ? They are numbered only |
Answer: | I know this question is old, but I thought since I was wondering, perhaps others still do as well. The blade measures approx. 2.25”... and by doing a little digging it turns out that is equal “approx.” 5.7cm |

Used CD
This disc offers what collectors of historical recordings look for: personality. Ida Haendel is one of the most sought-after violinists among LP collectors. She doesn't have the eccentricities that mark most cult objects. She just plays the music with singing tone, keeps things moving even in the placid Beethoven concerto, and holds your attention with the force of her imagination and the composers'. Although these are very different pieces, she performs them equally well. Rafael Kubelik and the orchestra are carefully integrated with the soloist. Although the orchestral sound could be more transparent, the violin comes across vividly in these excellent transfers from late-'40s 78s. --Leslie Gerber

With Pete Rushefsky, tsimbl (hammer dulcimer) Klezmer, the celebratory dance music of Eastern European Jews, has been gaining in popularity in recent years, partly through the work of the musical super-group, the Klezmatics. Lisa Gutkin, their virtuosic fiddler, has made a DVD that s perfect for anyone who wants to delve into this compelling musical tradition. With Pete Rushefsky s expert accompaniment, Lisa details the scales, rhythms, grace notes, trills, ornaments, fill-ins, slides and other techniques that provide the palette of sounds you ll need to play authentic-sounding klezmer tunes. She adds fascinating information about interpretation, improvisation and the history of the music. Fiddlers of all genres will benefit from her exercises and warm-ups, and her advice on posture, balance, bowing and fingering is invaluable. The pieces/dance forms she teaches include freylekhs, a festive walking song; bulgar, a syncopated tune with Bessarabian roots; hora, a triple-meter circle dance; and the slower, more melodic khosidl. Whether you re a beginner or an experienced klezmer musician - or a bluegrass, Celtic or classical violinist who wants to branch out into a different style - this lesson will add new sounds, techniques and flavors to your music.
