13 best guitar tuners

Guitar tuners are essential tools for ensuring that your guitar is in tune, which is crucial for producing accurate and pleasing musical tones. Here's what you need to know about guitar tuners:

  1. Purpose: Guitar tuners are devices designed to help musicians adjust the pitch of their guitar strings to the correct notes. They work by detecting the frequency of the sound produced by each string and providing visual or audible feedback to indicate whether the string is in tune.

  2. Types of Guitar Tuners:

    • Clip-On Tuners: These tuners clip onto the headstock of the guitar and use vibration to detect pitch. They are highly portable and work well in noisy environments.
    • Pedal Tuners: Typically used by electric guitarists, pedal tuners are placed in a pedalboard setup and can be engaged or disengaged using a footswitch. They are highly accurate and convenient for live performances.
    • Handheld Tuners: Handheld tuners are standalone devices that provide tuning feedback through a built-in microphone or by plugging the guitar directly into the tuner.
    • Smartphone Apps: There are numerous tuner apps available for smartphones that use the device's microphone to tune the guitar. These are convenient for on-the-go tuning.
  3. Tuning Methods:

    • Chromatic Tuners: Chromatic tuners can detect and tune to any note in the chromatic scale, making them versatile for different tuning systems.
    • Polyphonic Tuners: Some modern tuners can analyze the pitch of all the strings at once, allowing for quicker tuning of all strings simultaneously.
  4. Tuning Displays:

    • Needle Displays: Traditional tuners often feature a needle that moves to indicate whether the string is flat or sharp.
    • LED Displays: Many modern tuners use LED lights that change color or position to show whether the string is in tune.
    • Digital Displays: Some tuners have digital displays that show the exact frequency of the string, making it easier to fine-tune.
  5. Tuning Modes: Most guitar tuners can be set to different tuning modes, such as standard tuning (EADGBE), alternate tunings, drop tunings, and more.

  6. Accuracy: High-quality guitar tuners are highly accurate, helping musicians achieve precise tuning. The accuracy is often expressed in cents, with smaller numbers indicating better tuning precision.

  7. Reference Pitch: Many tuners allow you to set a reference pitch, which is the pitch to which you want to tune your guitar. Standard reference pitches are often A=440 Hz, but they can be adjusted for different musical contexts.

  8. Battery Life: Depending on the type of tuner, it may be powered by batteries, USB, or an AC adapter. Consider the battery life and power source when choosing a tuner for your needs.

  9. Versatility: Guitar tuners are not limited to guitars; they can be used with various stringed instruments, including bass guitars, ukuleles, violins, and more.

In summary, guitar tuners are indispensable tools for every guitarist, whether you're a beginner or a professional musician. They come in various types, offer different display options, and can be used in various settings to ensure your instrument is always in tune, which is essential for producing great-sounding music.

User questions & answers

Question: The last two sn-8s fell apart w/little use. both axis, on the clip and right under the tuner itself. have you done anything to improve the quality
Answer: I don’t really know. The stand is not as sturdy as what I needed and the shelf didn’t hold multiple items. I gave it away and ordered another heavy duty stand
Question: Is this a chromatic tuner. I want to tune all strings down a half step starting with the sixth string to E flat. Will this tuner do that
Answer: I assume you're asking about the included instrument holder. It's possible, but it seems like a viola might be a bit to heavy for it, so I haven't tried using it for anything larger than a soprano ukulele or 3/4 size violin, and it works fine for that. The stand I've been using for years for my viola is made by Ingles, and I recommend using that for heavier or more valuable instruments.
Question: Is this for All instruments? Im a trumpet player, and id like a clip on tuner to clip to my bell or the stand so i can always moniter my tuning
Answer: No. It will not hold a ukulele. I just received mine going to be able to do just that, but no, it will not.
Question: Does this tuner offer A
Answer: When pulled all the way up, it measures about 54 inches to the hinge on the back which connects to the platform. From there your height will be a bit lower as the base of the platform is lower. I would estimate about 52 inches as the maximum height measuring from the floor to the base of the platform.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this tune a banjo
Answer: 4 3/8 " w x 2 7/8" h x 1/2" d
Question: Will this tuner stay in the tuning I calibrate it to? E.g. if I set it to 432hz will it remain there each time it's turned off and on
Answer: Well, I just bought one and haven’t used it yet but it looks to me like you can tune anything with it. The device merely shows the frequency Of the notes it “hears”. You stilll have to “tune” the instrument to the proper frequency, which you can see on the device.
Question: Learning cello 1st position. need a device to show if I'm spot on. Quick response? Attach to bridge? Handles harmonics accurately
Answer: Yes, you can plug your electric guitar directly into this tuner without an amp and tune it. The input on the right side is used for this.
Question: Can I easily calibrate this to 432 Hz
Answer: Yes

User questions & answers

Question: Is this tuner safe for use with yamaha student guitars (cgs102a
Answer: The back slides downward. Place your thumbs on the raised arrows on each corner and push downward. This will expose the two AAA batteries. It's a little tight the first time you open it, You can wear rubber gloves if it hurts you thumbs. Don't give up!
Question: What is the difference between the snark sn1 and the snark sn1x
Answer: It should. When using it to tune my piano it didn't pick up the lowest octave, so if you're using a really low tuning you might look for a specific Bass tuner. If you plug into the tuner directly it should pick up any note you use though.
Question: Does the snark sn1x version work with other stringed instruments, such as ukuleles and cellos
Answer: No there was not an input cord included with the tuner.
Question: does this measure by vibration
Answer: It should tune a banjo. I have a tenor guitar which is tuned the same as a banjo, and the KLIQ works great on it.

User questions & answers

Question: How well does this work for a bass guitar? I've got a Snark that doesn't register well on my Fender Jazz bass
Answer: No. I verified with the manufacturer it can only produce a single rhythm at a time.
Question: How can this work with any guitar case? It wouldn’t sit in there safely whatsoever. Very impractical
Answer: After you power the device on, press the mode button so you are in "Pitch" mode. I believe the default pitch you will get is an A at 440. You can use that pitch to tune your cello - just tune the A-string to that pitch. If it doesn't come up with a A, you can turn the wheel and as you do, it changes the pitch. You can turn it to each pitch of the 4 cellos strings, A, D, G & C. Just make sure you don't tune to a sharp or flat, just the straight pitch.
Question: Could i use this for intonation
Answer: If your question is related to operating power, it requires 2 AAA batteries. Without modification, there is no capability to apply external power.
Question: If I change the pitch to 432Hz, will it reset to 440Hz if I turn it off and back on
Answer: There is no fan. It is the same exact size as the SB6121/SB6141. Just that it is white. It runs luke warm, not really even hot.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work for Viola
Answer: Yes this is a chromatic tuner.
Question: My dad plays in a spanish guitar tuning, does this have a chromatic mode that covers all of the different note registers without a setting change
Answer: Models 2 and 8 work across all instruments; model 2 also has a mic option. Since you're not playing guitar, recommend avoid the other models. Get a version 2 versus an 8 if you want to clip to a stand. Theoretically the new ST versions are faster than the SN versions, but I haven't tried an ST version yet. That said, I've found than the older SNs are too slow to follow intonation while playing anything faster than whole notes. (In my experience, SN are perfect for tuning, not so much for playing; maybe the STs can handle it.) Since a trumpet bell is thin, you can probably use an ST. However, if someone needs to clip onto something thicker like a recorder (I've clipped them around the narrowest section of the foot joint on plastic soprano and smaller instruments), may want to use an older SN.
Question: This is a gift for my daughter. Will this work for ukuleles, acoustic guitars, bass and electric guitars? Will it work for anything else
Answer: This is from the Snark instructions that come in the packaging: "To set the Snark to another tuning reference, push the round "PITCH CAL" button on the back side of the tuner and immediately press either the up or down triangular buttons to choose a new tuning reference. The pitch reference can be set anywhere from 415-466Hz." This would allow you to choose A-432.
Question: Can I use this tuner to tune a kalimba
Answer: If you're looking for a folding music stand this all metal one is pretty sturdy compared to plastic one's. I use it with an over-filled 3" folder of music and it handles it fine. I would recommend trying it and if it doesn't work out send it back. It's easy to break down and put in it's bag. The only negative thing I can say about this is the led light. It doesn't have a built-in rechargeable battery but it will work with a USB adapter even w/o batteries in it. This would not prevent me from buying it.

User questions & answers

Question: How accurate is this for vocal tuning
Answer: You can adjust the calibration on the frequency to some degree but not nearly enough to accomplish what you want which is one whole tone. This is the problem you will encounter with any standard electronic tuner. About the most any of them can be adjusted is less than a half tone.
Question: Does this have polyrhythms
Answer: Yes. It gets pitch from acoustic instruments through it's microphone, electric instruments through it's input.
Question: How do I tune my cello? Do i use the violin part? Or does it has a different letter/number
Answer: It works with this range. A0 (27.50Hz) - C8 (4186.01Hz): Sine wave
Question: Does this metronome have ac/dc capability
Answer: Yes, it’s chromatic so it will work. We have found proper placement is key in order for it to register well. Like clipping it to the bridge for example.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this product come with an internal microphone or would I have to buy an additional microphone
Answer: does it work for an autoharp
Question: What are the dimensions of the korg tm-60 tuner itself (not the package it's shipped in
Answer: Yes, I believe it would be the best choice. The ST-2 is an all instrument tuner. I hope this was helpful.
Question: Can this be used to tune a tenor saxophone
Answer: According to Snark's website, the ST-2 has a mic and vibration sensor, the ST-8 appears to be vibration only, the ST-8Hz adds Hertz Tuning for 1/10th of 1 Hz Accuracy. The ST-2 replaces the SN-2, the ST-8 replaces the SN-8, etc. They do still show the originals on their website. However, Snark doesn't show the SN1X, SN5X, or SN6X on their website any longer. I assume they are discontinued.
Question: Will this work to tune an electric guitar without an amp? Or do you have to use a clip on to pickup vibrations
Answer: As long as your TV has a headphone jack or RCA audio ports (and an adapter), yes you can.
