12 best dr 8 string guitars
An 8-string guitar, often referred to as an "8-stringer," is a type of electric guitar that features eight strings instead of the usual six found on standard electric guitars. Here's what you need to know about 8-string guitars:
String Configuration: An 8-string guitar typically has four pairs of strings, arranged in a combination of octaves and unison. The most common tuning for an 8-string guitar is F# (low) B (low) E A D G B E, starting from the lowest string.
Extended Range: The primary purpose of an 8-string guitar is to provide an extended range of notes and a broader tonal palette. The additional strings allow for lower notes, enabling guitarists to play heavier and more complex music with extended basslines and chords.
Musical Styles: 8-string guitars are popular among metal, djent, progressive rock, and experimental guitarists. The extended range and versatility make them suitable for genres that require deep, heavy, and intricate soundscapes.
Scale Length: Some 8-string guitars have longer scale lengths compared to traditional 6-string guitars. This helps maintain proper tension on the additional strings, ensuring they stay in tune and provide clear intonation.
Pickups: Many 8-string guitars come equipped with specialized pickups designed to capture the extended frequency range of the instrument. Some guitarists prefer active pickups for the extra clarity and punch they provide.
Neck Design: The neck of an 8-string guitar may have a wider and thicker profile to accommodate the additional strings. This can be a consideration for players, as it can affect the feel and playability of the instrument.
Challenges: Playing an 8-string guitar can be challenging, especially for those used to 6-string guitars. It requires adjustments in technique, fingering, and chord voicings due to the wider neck and increased string count.
Customization: Many 8-string guitar players opt for customized setups, experimenting with string gauges, tunings, and pickup configurations to achieve their desired sound.
Popular Models: Various guitar manufacturers produce 8-string guitar models, including Ibanez, Schecter, ESP, and more. These guitars come in various price ranges, making them accessible to a wide range of players.
Versatility: While 8-string guitars are often associated with heavy music, they can be used across different genres, including jazz, fusion, and progressive metal. Their versatility makes them a valuable addition to a guitarist's collection.
In summary, an 8-string guitar is an electric guitar with eight strings, providing an extended range of notes and a broader tonal palette. It is popular among guitarists who play heavy and complex music styles, but it can also be versatile enough to suit various musical genres with the right setup and technique adjustments.

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone used these strings with an Ibanez RG8 or RG |
Answer: | I'm a Jackson man myself but I've owned two ibanez 7 string guitars. I've been playing forever and I've play every make of string there is. I have Ernie balls on my 7 and DRs on my 8 the DR are so much better especially in the low end when pull down on my low f# the tone, growl and Grit is epic. Plus the last far longer then the other name brands. I use DRs on my 6 string bass as well and I absolutly love them. But if you are into floppy and sloppy and brand will do, no need to spend extra money. |
Question: | I’m thinking of buying these for my esp viper 407 (25-1/2) scale. would these be good strings |
Answer: | I used them on a cheap Ibanez 8 string guitar. They were fine. The 8th string was a bit too think so I had to file down the hole on the tuner thing. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will the 8th string fit the tuner knob hole of an RG |
Answer: | It should, depending on how you wind your strings. The strings have a nice long taper. If it doesn't fit the way you like, you can always unwind a little of the outer wire wrapping with pliers. |
Question: | Would this strings fit on an Ibanez RG |
Answer: | I think the RG8004 has a 27" scale, right? These strings should be just fine for you. The lowest string might be a little too big to fit in your tuning machine, but if you run into that just clip the string longer than you need it, grab the outermost winding (there should be 2 layers) layer and strip it back until you have enough of the inner layers exposed to fit in the tuning machine. Make sure it wraps around the tuning machine at least 1 full time while tuning and the string won't sound different or have any structural issues. |
Question: | Bit of a noob question, but is it a good idea to use these on a 7 string |
Answer: | I actually had to file the hole on the 8th string tuner on my 8 string guitar(Ibanez RG8) for the 8th string to fit. I cant imagine the 8th string fitting in a 7th string tuner on a 7th string guitar. If you buy these i would exclude the 8th string and just use the 7th-1st strings. |
Question: | What gauges are included |
Answer: | Gauges 10-13-17-26-36-46-56-75 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will the high e string bust if I bend a lot ? How long would it last |
Answer: | I have played DR strings for a long time. I have never had an issue with these or any other DR sets. I bend a lot and also use a Floyd rose to ring out dives. I haven't broken a string in a very long time. The Dimebag signature set is pretty awesome for many styles of playing. They are really nice and bright and shine through the mix nicely. |
Question: | Should these be 10-56? Whats the diffetence between these and the titefits |
Answer: | No. There are multiple gauges of Hi-Voltage strings but I do not believe that 10 to 56 is one of them. According to DRstrings website they make dbg-9 (9/42), dbg-9/46, dbg-9/52, dbg-10 (10/46), dbg-10/52, dbg-11 (11/50). I have never used titefits so I could not say what the difference is. But I can recommend these if you use the whammy bar a lot or do a lot of bends because they take an insane amount of abuse and keep sounding amazing. |

Answer: | Thanks for your interest! I believe these are wound strings. |
Question: | Is it 4.99 shipping per pack of strings. Or is it 4.99 per total shipment |
Answer: | Hi Todd, it probably depends on which seller you are buying from. I can only speak for us, we sell these strings for 7.99 w/ free shipping. Hope that helps! Thanks, Jason |
Question: | How do these hold up in low tunings like drop b |
Answer: | I am in b drop a. I have a locking tremolo and I use it alot!!!! These strings are incredible!!!! Exellent sounding highs and in your face lows!!!! I don't use anything else. My rythem guitarist (also with a floyd rose) uses 13 gauge ddts!!! |
Question: | Do these have a decent brightness to them |
Answer: | They are not overtly bright, but they do not sound like just BOOM BOOm either. These are my favorite strings for Drop tuning as they just work and sound amazing. Check out my music, Pain Cylinder or Elric Phares and you can hear them. I would endorse these any day of the week.Rock on my MetalHead brother. Peace. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which grade of strings would you most recommend for younger players...under age |
Answer: | I would recommend a set of 10 guage electric strings put on an acoustic guitar and go to 11 guage acoustics and work your way up to 12 guage acoustic. I would leave the electric strings on until proficient in basic chords. |
Question: | What does the "12 pack" logo in the photograph mean? are there two sets of strings |
Answer: | I do not see "12 pack" in the logo. The above photo is one set of phosphor bronze light guage guitar strings for a 6 string acoustic guitar. There are not 2 sets of strings in the pack. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Would you describe these strings warm or bright please? I prefer warm mellow tones |
Answer: | DR Handmade describes them as "musically bright and rich sounding". So they are more bright than warm. Thanks! |

User questions & answers
Question: | does D'addario have heavy gauge strings for a 7 string? I really liked the extra heavy 12/60 strings for my 6 strings, do you have that for a 7 string |
Answer: | You should look into ghs boomers. They have some heavy sets. |
Question: | Are these strings coated? The "XL" implies so |
Answer: | NYXL strings are not coated, and XL is just a product series/family name, which does not imply any specific product specs. - Steve @ D'Addario |
Question: | So what do you Blues players have to say about these strings |
Answer: | Depends on the type of blues you play.... If you lean more toward "Delta", you probably wont like these much 'cause they give you more bottom end and highs and get rid of that muddy low-mid much sought-after in that style. Otherwise, many of us who pursue the more recent guitar gods (aka Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Page, etc.) will probably find these strings to be a nice "push" - to some, it will be like adding well-needed air to a deflating balloon. |
Question: | What is thw difference between Balanced and Not Balanced versions |
Answer: | In producing a Balanced Tension set, D'Addario has attempted to make the string tension of all six strings as equal as possible. The benefit to the play is that pressing on one string feels essentially the same as pressing on any other string. This is especially important for string-bending. Once you learn how much pressure is necessary to bend one string to increase the pitch 1/2 step (for example), the same pressure will increase the pitch 1/2 step on any other string. |

User questions & answers
Question: | People have commented about the string tension. Has anyone put these on a Taylor GS Mini? Will they buzz |
Answer: | Usually if you're changing strings of the same gauge it won't be an issue, but then again there's always a possibility. Like cars, guitars needs to be maintained and a slight adjustment may be necessary. |
Question: | What is the material of the High E and B strings consist of please? Plain Steel, Silvered Steel, etc |
Answer: | Phosphor Bronze |
Question: | I am very sensitive to high pitches and tones. I'm looking for warm low mellow strings. Which set of strings (type and gauge) do you recommend |
Answer: | Thanks for the question, Jason - I have enjoyed the fullness and bassy warmth of the DR Rares - but also feel the guitar is more contributive toward tone. Like you, I do not resonate with trebly high-pitched metallic thin tones - but discovered the biggest improvement when I upgraded instruments (rather than strings). I also prefer thicker gauge - due to bold response, clarity and less buzzing (which can also cause high pitches) - but that's also an action issue for some. In addition, as you likely already know, most string mellow out (and get duller) over usage - so you may find that you prefer any string when it gets older rather than new as well. Hope this helps. User questions & answers
Question: | does it work with a full sized eletric guitar |
Answer: | Hi, yes, but their mainly for acoustic-electric guitars like Jazz Hollowbody guitars or Taylor T5 Acoustic Electrics. Thanks - Darryl, Megatone Music |
Question: | Are the strings the same |
Answer: | The same as what? They are a great quality string |
Question: | The 6th string has a loud buzz after installing on my Ovation acoustic electric (didn't before). Anyone else experience this or know how to fix |
Answer: | Make sure everything is situated properly. Also, did you change gage of strings? That can affect your set up. |
Question: | Are these good for beginners? Also, would these be good for an acoustic-electric fender? Thanks in advance |
Answer: | If you're looking for a lighter feel, I would recommend going with the Zebra - Round Core 10-48. the 10-48 refers to the thickness of the string and 10-48 is the thinnest string which also equates to them being easier to press against the fret since they take less "pull" to get them into tune. I personally use the 11-50 that you have here because I tend to break the 10s (hard strumming), but if I don't play often the 11s will strain my fingers. Either with work fine for electric or acoustic. I have them on an acoustic/electric Takamini. They have a great full sound and last long if you take care of them I use "fast fret" before and after I play which makes the strings more slippery so you don't feel the rub of the strings as much. It also cleans the strings and puts a thin layer of grease on them so they don't get rusty too quick.... rust=pain. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I bought balanced tension 9-40. I received regular 9-42s |
Answer: | Some sellers don't exactly know what balanced tension strings are so they probably though you just wanted 9's |
Question: | stings included in 1 package or just 1 string |
Answer: | The strings are sold in sets of 6 strings. A set of strings for a guitar contains 6 strings... Some music stores sell individual strings, but these strings are sold in full sets of 6. Each string set includes 6 strings: one each of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th string (each string is a different gauge). For example: 1-pack: contains 1 set of 6 strings 3-pack: contains 3 sets of 6 strings (each of the 3 sets contains 6 strings) 10-pack: contains 10 sets of 6 strings (each of the 10 sets contains 6 strings) In other words, if you purchase the 3-pack, you will get 3 full sets of all 6 strings! |
Question: | What does 3D mean |
Answer: | It is just D'Addario's (SKU) way of naming the strings, it's a 3-pack of strings. Their single packs are EXL-110 and the three-pack is just EXL-110-3D.Thanks, Jason |
Question: | Would this work on a les paul special p |
Answer: | Shure thing man it will work on almost everyguitar. The only exeption would be if you were playing a really low tuning these string might not be tight enough hope that helps |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the 3rd string wrapped or smooth |
Answer: | Pam,The third string is smooth on the 9/46s and the 9/42s.Also, make sure you follow directions printed on the inside of the package on how to mount the strings. I understand that stretching nickels in the usualmanner is not a good idea because of the round cores. Too much stretching, pulling the string away form the body, puts too much stress on the windings. I have had 2 'D' string windings break at the 3 and fourth frets on 2 different electrics. Other than that issue they are wonderful nickels at a great price point. They are on all my electrics. Thanks for the question and have fun... |
