14 best string bass strings

String bass strings, also known as double bass strings, are essential components of the double bass, which is a large, bowed string instrument commonly used in classical, jazz, and other genres of music. These strings play a crucial role in producing the instrument's sound and tone. Here's what you need to know about string bass strings:

  1. Materials: String bass strings are typically made from a variety of materials, each contributing to the instrument's tonal characteristics. The most common materials used for double bass strings are:

    • Steel: Steel strings are favored for their durability and bright, clear sound. They are commonly used in jazz and contemporary music styles.

    • Gut: Gut strings are made from sheep or cow intestines and have a warmer, more traditional tone. They are often used in classical music and historically informed performances.

    • Synthetic Core: Some modern double bass strings feature synthetic cores, which aim to combine the durability of steel with the warmth of gut strings.

  2. String Types: Double bass strings come in various types, categorized by the pitch they produce:

    • E String: The highest-pitched string, the E string is typically made of steel and produces a bright and focused sound.

    • A String: The second-highest string, the A string, can be made from steel, gut, or synthetic materials. It has a warm and rich tone.

    • D String: The third string in the set, the D string, also comes in various materials and produces a balanced tone.

    • G String: The lowest-pitched string, the G string, provides a deep and resonant sound. It is crucial for the instrument's low register.

  3. Tension: Double bass strings come in different tension levels, which affect the feel and playability of the instrument. Players often choose tension based on their playing style and personal preferences.

  4. String Gauges: String gauge refers to the thickness of the strings. Heavier gauge strings tend to produce a more substantial sound, while lighter gauges may offer greater ease of playability.

  5. Changing Strings: Replacing double bass strings can be a delicate process, often requiring the assistance of a trained luthier (string instrument maker or technician). The strings need to be carefully fitted and tuned to ensure the instrument's optimal performance.

  6. Maintenance: To prolong the life of double bass strings, players should regularly clean them with a soft cloth and consider using rosin on the bow hair to maintain proper grip and sound production.

  7. Tone Adjustment: The choice of string material, gauge, and tension can significantly impact the tone of the double bass. Players often experiment with different string combinations to achieve their desired sound.

  8. Cost: Double bass strings vary in price depending on factors like the material and brand. High-quality strings can be relatively expensive, but they can significantly affect the instrument's sound quality.

In summary, string bass strings are crucial components of the double bass, influencing its sound, playability, and overall performance. Musicians often select strings based on their musical genre, playing style, and tonal preferences, and they may consult with a luthier for expert advice on string selection and maintenance.

User questions & answers

Question: What’s the length in inches of these strings
Answer: Unless otherwise noted, all of our bass strings are 48" in length and designed for basses with a scale length of 34".
Question: Will these work on rbx jm2 John Myung signature
Answer: Hi there, If the scale length of the bass is around 34 or 35 inches it should work. Also John Myung's name appears on the back as an endorsed artists for the strings. Hope this helps!
Question: What are good for rock
Answer: Slinky are basically made for Rock! Bright, but also well rounded tones. Hope that helps.

Answer: Check out juststrings.com for individual strings.
Question: Will these strings be safe to put on my Hofner Ignition Bass

User questions & answers

Question: How are the mediums compared to lights, i am looking at these for my first string change and i don't know what i have now. Is there a big difference
Answer: Not really a big difference. The most common gauge is 45-65-85-105 (Custom Light). If you like a bit more stiffness in your G and D strings, go with Medium. If you like a little looser E and A, go with Light. If you don't care one way or the other, just go with Custom Light.Mind you, again, it's not a huge difference. It's subtle. I like my E and A a little softer so it's easier to dig in, so I buy Lights (45 65 80 100).
Question: Is this a decent guage for drop b on a bass
Answer: been using EXL-170 for years with drop B and D tuning 4 string - fender P bass no buzz super clear
Question: Do these strings have a real bright tone? I am playing praise and worship music and not sure I want that real bright tone
Answer: If you want to avoid any bright tone, then consider taped, flat finish strings that are designed to reduce string and fret noise. Your pick ups and playing style will also affect your tone. These are middle of the road for nickel wound strings.
Question: Would the Medium gauge be good for drop D
Answer: In my opinion they are good for a drop D

User questions & answers

Question: Are these strings for a 4 string acoustic bass. And if so are they better than nickel strings
Answer: Yes, they are for acoustic bass. Regular nickel electric bass strings won't work on an acoustic bass because they are not loud enough. I am a very active bassist, and D'Addario makes great strings. The Phosphor Bronze have a bright tone, and are my favorite choice for acoustic bass.
Question: hi,i have an freetless acoustic bass harley benton, the original string aren't so good,i wish try these, just several mine are
Answer: In my experience, factory strings are not very good. I am a D'addario fan. I would recommend any of their products for your fretless bass. I have these strings on my acoustic bass and they have performed beyond my expectations.
Question: Is the fifth string a low 'B' and if so, how's the tension on it compared to the 'E' above - does it feel as tight?' Thanks
Answer: No, it does not feel as tight. So long as you tune it to low B and you don't have any intonation or string height issues, you're good. Check this out. http://bassplaying.com/diy-bass-setup-guide
Question: Are these flat wound strings
Answer: They are semi-round wound as they have a hexagonal steel core. I also found this information under the product description listed by Amazon. The strings are great sounding, very bright, and sounds even better plugged into an amp. Still has good tone after months of being stringed...

User questions & answers

Question: are these the "long" length
Answer: These are standard length. Should work with any 34" scale bass.
Question: Is each string in it’s own labeled bag to tell which string it is? If not, does it show which string is which another way
Answer: Each string has a ball end that is colored and it tells you whether it is E, A, D, or G. Also, the gauge is so noticeable, you shouldn’t have a problem differentiating them out.
Question: How stiff are these strings (45-105) I have Ernie ball cobalt flats of the same gauge right now and I want something stiffer
Answer: I found these to be a great stiffness for my playing (mostly finger and 10% pick). I have not played the cobalt flats but I do have DR Blues on my jazz bass and the La Bella’s are more stiff than those. Hopefully that helps! Overall great strings
Question: what's the difference between stainless steel and nickel plated stings
Answer: I’m not actually sure. I would think stainless steel sound brighter the nickel plated

User questions & answers

Question: Will these fit on a 32 inch scale? It's a weird old Japanese bass
Answer: Try this link it may be helpful: http://www.daddario.com/upload/BassArticle2_1803.pdf
Question: Will these fit a Sterling Ray 34 fretless bass it is 34" scale not sure which length to get
Answer: I'm not sure but I can say they fit my Ibanez Road Gear RD500 (24fret 34 scale) Bass perfectly if that helps. They are smooth as silk and sound incredible! Great Strings.
Question: i wish to put in my acoustic bass,it's possible
Answer: Most bass strings are deigned for electric use only, putting these on your acoustic bass may pull up the bridge and reck your instrument. Unfortunately there aren't many brands that offer a flat wound acoustic bass string. Thanks for the question!
Question: I've been using D'Addario Nickel Round Wound 45-105 bass strings. Will these strings require a setup for my bass, these are higher tension strings
Answer: Cdub53, switching from the D'Addario 45-105's to ECB81's will have a minuscule, perhaps not even noticeable effect on your bass. In the event that there is a change, a tech in your area may be able to perform a slight adjustment for less than the cost of a full set up. If you're interested in pursuing the flat-wound sound, a small investment (around $20.00) may be worth it.

User questions & answers

Question: Could these be used with a magnetic pickup
Answer: Thank you for your interest. Yes, you can fit a basketball shoes and a basketball. Have a nice day.
Question: Will these fit a hadean ukb-23c uke bass? it has a 20-inch scale length
Answer: There are 2 separate zippered areas that have space from top to bottom... I think two 2 inch binders could fit in the biggest area. Then, you still have room for a small binder or multiple notebooks in the other section. (The outside zipper would hold pencil case, phone... it goes from the zipper to about the bottom of logo.)
Question: What is the MAX scale length these will fit
Answer: Yes perfect for a 5th grader. Got it for my daughter to go to camp and she is a 6th trader. Perfect school bag, lots of pockets. No hesitation
