10 best guitar strings mediums
Guitar strings are a critical component of any guitar, and they play a significant role in determining the instrument's sound and playability. Here's what you need to know about guitar strings, specifically focusing on acoustic guitar strings:
Material: Acoustic guitar strings are typically made from various materials, including steel, bronze, and nylon. Steel strings are the most common and are used on steel-string acoustic guitars. They produce a bright and crisp tone. Bronze strings, which are a type of steel string with a bronze winding, are also popular for their warm and rich sound. Nylon strings are used on classical guitars and produce a mellow, classical tone.
String Gauges: Guitar strings come in different thicknesses, known as gauges. Common gauges for acoustic steel-string guitars include light (0.012-0.053 inches), medium (0.013-0.056 inches), and heavy (0.014-0.059 inches). Lighter gauges are easier on the fingers but may sacrifice some volume and tone, while heavier gauges provide more volume and projection but can be harder to play, especially for beginners.
Coated vs. Uncoated: Some acoustic guitar strings come with a thin protective coating, such as those labeled "coated" or "treated." Coated strings tend to last longer and resist corrosion, making them a good choice for players who want extended string life. However, coated strings may have a slightly different tone compared to uncoated strings.
Tone and Sound: The choice of guitar strings has a significant impact on the guitar's tone. Different materials and gauges produce distinct tonal characteristics. Experimenting with different string types can help you achieve the desired sound for your playing style and musical genre.
String Winding: On steel-string acoustic guitar strings, you'll find various winding options, including roundwound and flatwound. Roundwound strings have a textured surface, providing brightness and articulation. Flatwound strings have a smoother surface, offering a warmer and more mellow tone.
String Tension: The tension of guitar strings can affect playability and the feel of the instrument. Higher tension strings may require more finger strength but can provide better projection and clarity. Lower tension strings are generally easier to play but may lack some volume.
Changing Strings: It's essential to change your guitar strings regularly to maintain good tone and playability. The frequency of string changes depends on factors like how often you play and your string type. Old, worn-out strings can sound dull and lose their intonation.
Maintenance: Proper care and maintenance of your guitar strings can extend their lifespan. Wiping them down after playing to remove sweat and oils from your fingers can help prevent corrosion.
In summary, acoustic guitar strings are available in various materials, gauges, and coatings, each affecting the instrument's tone and playability. Finding the right set of strings that suits your playing style and preferences is crucial for achieving the desired sound on your acoustic guitar.

Prolong your tone with the same acoustic guitar strings that experienced players worldwide trust to keep their incredible tone longer than any other string available. Unlike other string brands, Elixir Strings coats the whole string. This protects not only the outer string surface but also the gaps between the windings where common tone-deadening gunk typically builds up in other brands’ coated and uncoated guitar strings. Anti-Rust Plating on plain steel strings ensures longer tone life for the entire set. Who wouldn’t love more quality playing time between the hassle and cost of string changes? Premium by design, these acoustic strings constructed with 80/20 (80% copper, 20% zinc) bronze wrap wire boast a crisp, bright tone with an expressive, vibrant presence. Compared to our original POLYWEB Coating, the ultra-thin NANOWEB Coating allows a more traditionally textured, “uncoated” feel. For a slicker, gentler feel, try the original POLYWEB Coating on our 80/20 Bronze Acoustic Strings, which also feature a more robust and rounded tone. For more of a balance between bold and bright, our Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings with NANOWEB Coating deliver full-bodied tone and sparkling high-end clarity alongside the same traditional feel as these 80/20 bronze strings. Of course, the kind of string you play is all a matter of personal preference. Not sure what tone or feel is right for you? User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference between poly web and nano web? Which is warmer, less bright |
Answer: | I've tried both, and I'd say the polyweb coated strings are less bright. I prefer a brighter sound so I go with the nanoweb. |
Question: | Why do I pay for amazon prime to get 3 day expedited shipping order these strings and ten days later no strings |
Answer: | Because Jeff Bezo's needs money to pay for his expensive divorce. |
Question: | I own a Wasburn D10N guitar and can't decide between the Elixir Light Nanoweb 80/20 Bronze and Phosphor bronze. Any suggestions - spruce top |
Answer: | I have used almost every brand of strings on my various Martin acoustics. Elixirs stand above the crowd in terms of tone quality. 80/20 bronze bring out the best but need changing about every 2-3 months max for a daily player. Phosphor-bronze have less nuanced tone but still excellent, and seem to last almost twice as long. Recommend 80/20 for the regular player who wants the most "detailed" tone, P-B for more occasional playing and longer life. Discerning players will be happy with either in any case. |
Question: | What is the difference in sound between the 80/20s and the Phosphor Bronze nano web? I enjoy ease of fingering, warm sound, projection. Which one |
Answer: | 80/20s bronze will initially be brighter. Phosphor bronzes will be warmer. 80/20s become warmer after use more quickly and may become undesirable to use more quickly because the strings are no longer giving you the desired tone you started with. Phosphor bronzes hold their initial tone longer, but are by design, warmer. Projection (beyond gauge of the strings~heavy vs medium vs light vs extralight) and ease of fingering have much more to do with the guitar you're using, style of playing (use of a pick/how hard you're strumming/finger-picking), and setup (tuning~you drop down a half a step, the strings will have less tension and will be easier to bend). |

Made For Musicians Who Just Want To Play More Music
Ever since pioneering coated string technology in 1997, our reason for making premium guitar strings has remained simple—we want you to have more quality playing time between the hassle and cost of string changes. And gig after gig, session after session, lesson after lesson, we’ve delivered. In fact, experienced players worldwide trust our corrosion-defying strings to keep their tone longer than any other brand’s coated or uncoated strings,* and we’re proud to stand as America’s #1 acoustic guitar string brand.**
We now offer three premium acoustic string options, each featuring our patented coating technology, to help you find exactly the tone and feel you’re looking for. Thanks to the unique differences between metals and coatings, we offer a long-lasting set for any style. From bright and sparkling to rich and robust, the dynamic range of available sound is yours for the picking. Of course, finding the string that’s right for you is a matter of personal preference. So try them out for yourself!

Less Sweat, Debris, And Finger Squeak
The way your strings sound has a lot to do with what you normally can’t see. While both of our patented coatings reduce noisy finger squeak, they also cut down on a large number of other pesky annoyances common to your average uncoated string. Sweat, skin, dirt, and even air, for example, can do a lot of damage to your strings. And if you live in a hot, humid area, the moisture in the atmosphere can wreak total havoc on your strings’ tone life. But with Elixir Strings, you’re getting world-class protection that’s engineered to endure.
Polyweb Coating Vs NANOWEB Coating
POLYWEB Coating was our first coated string innovation all the way back in the '90s. It tends to warm and mellow the string’s tone and has a fast, slick feel that’s gentle on the fingers, which lets players keep jamming without the strings getting in the way. As a response to players who said they prefer a more traditional feel, NANOWEB Coating was then designed. This ultra-thin coating allows a brighter, crisper tone while offering the same amount of tone-life protection as its predecessor.
Coated Like No Other
Unlike other string brands, Elixir Strings coats the whole string. This protects not only the outer string surface but also the gaps between the windings where common tone-deadening gunk typically builds up in other brands’ coated and uncoated guitar strings. That’s why Elixir strings retain their tone longer than any other brand’s string, coated or uncoated. Simply put, build-up and corrosion kill your tone, and Elixir strings protect against elements that cause build-up and corrosion. All while sounding exactly how you’d expect a premium set of strings to sound.
Anti-Rust Plating
Corrosion protection between wrap wire windings is all well and good, but you may be asking yourself, 'What about the strings that don’t have a wrap wire?' And we’re proud to tell you, don’t worry—we’ve got those covered too. Literally. With our signature Anti-Rust Plating, even your plain steel strings defy the elements. This ensures longer tone life not just for your coated wound strings, but for your entire set. When we say you’ll have more gigging, jamming, touring, or practice time between string changes, we mean it.

Question: | Does this set have a wound third |
Answer: | It would have three points |
Question: | I am very sensitive to high pitches and tones. I'm looking for warm low mellow strings. Which set of strings (type and gauge) do you recommend |
Answer: | Yes, 110-240 (as stated on the charger). Comes with plug converter. |
Question: | how many strings in the pack |
Answer: | What I received are 3.7 volt and 1650mAh. The one that came with my camera is marked 3.7v, but cannot tell what mAh. It's not marked anything readable. The voltage seems to be the important part as I've been using these interchangeably in my camera without problems. |
Question: | are these ball end or do these come in ball end versions |
Answer: | I purchased the batteries for my Nikon camera, which came with a Nikon MH-61 charger. The charger took about an hour to initially charge the batteries. The time to recharge after use depends upon how much power I've drained from the battery. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I bought balanced tension 9-40. I received regular 9-42s |
Answer: | Some sellers don't exactly know what balanced tension strings are so they probably though you just wanted 9's |
Question: | stings included in 1 package or just 1 string |
Answer: | The strings are sold in sets of 6 strings. A set of strings for a guitar contains 6 strings... Some music stores sell individual strings, but these strings are sold in full sets of 6. Each string set includes 6 strings: one each of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th string (each string is a different gauge). For example: 1-pack: contains 1 set of 6 strings 3-pack: contains 3 sets of 6 strings (each of the 3 sets contains 6 strings) 10-pack: contains 10 sets of 6 strings (each of the 10 sets contains 6 strings) In other words, if you purchase the 3-pack, you will get 3 full sets of all 6 strings! |
Question: | What does 3D mean |
Answer: | It is just D'Addario's (SKU) way of naming the strings, it's a 3-pack of strings. Their single packs are EXL-110 and the three-pack is just EXL-110-3D.Thanks, Jason |
Question: | Would this work on a les paul special p |
Answer: | Shure thing man it will work on almost everyguitar. The only exeption would be if you were playing a really low tuning these string might not be tight enough hope that helps |

Up until the 70s pure nickel wrap was the most common and most used strings for electric - it wasn't until the 70s that nickel plated steel with more output and slightly longer life started coming into manufacture and more widespread use. Today many blues players, and jazz players who do not want to use flat wound strings, preferred the all nickel wound strings |
Question: | Would these be okay for a Harmony acoustic electric guitar and what gauge strings |
Answer: | Hi, yes they are good strings for that guitar. I bought them looking for a warm jazzy tone, but these caliber are hard to play. |
Question: | Are the unwound strings coated with the same material as the wound strings? Also, is the G string wrapped in 9-42 sets |
Answer: | On sets over 12 gauge on the first string... the 3rd string is wound. Under 11 gauge E string the G is plain.Overall great strings these pure nickel ones. |
Question: | At what point on the size scale does the 3-string (G) become a wound string? Individual string dimension should be stated in the specs |
Answer: | Pure Nickel is less susceptible to the magnetic field, and thus warmer. A lot of blues players use them. Think 50/60’s sound. Nickel Wound, has a steel core, which are affected more by the pick-up magnets. Those strings have a brighter attack. Hope that helps! Always try them yourself, personal taste may differ. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you recommend these d'addario nickel bronze strings for strumming ? (vs d'addario phosphor bronze |
Answer: | No. Not yet. |
Question: | is the 3rd string wound |
Answer: | Typically for an acoustic guitar you want acoustic strings, commonly phosphor bronze. These are for an electric guitar and have an unwound fourth string. They can be used in any guitar if you choose. I would suggest 11's on the light and up to 13's. I typically use 12's in my acoustic guitars |
Question: | What light and medium and custom light means |
Answer: | The plain strings are treated with an anti-rust coating thats different from the nanoweb wrap or the other strings. The 3rd is plain steel in the 9-42. |
Question: | is therea ball at end of the string |
Answer: | Usually a wound 3rd is clearly stated on strings packaging, as that is a salient feature. You will find this often in electric sets 12-52, usually labelled "Heavy" or "Jazz." In most cases the wound G string starts at .021 or .022, but I've seen sets that wind the g at .018-.019. I know this is more general info and not related to Elixir, but I'm guessing it applies to their strings, too. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are the strings, lite or medium |
Answer: | Yes, they are lightweight strings. |
Question: | how wide |
Answer: | Wide enough. These are 12's. Light gauge string. They'll fit just about any acoustic guitar. The width of the neck (if that's what you mean when you say "how wide?") doesn't matter. These are the strings Martin recommends for most of their guitars by default. |
Question: | What is the difference between light, custom light, etc? I just receivrd my new Martin acoustic snd want to get a spare identical pair |
Answer: | The custom light strings are a bit smaller in diameter than the light as shown below, per martin specs. Actually, there is an even lighter gauge called extra light. I like using the extra light for finger picking. I'll list all three categories. The gauges are listed starting with the 1st string (small E) etc. I won't bother to list the medium gauge strings. Extra light: .010 .014 .023 .030 .039 .047 Custom light: .011 .015 .023 .032 .042 .052 Light: .012 .016 .025 .032 .042 .054 The strings you mention being light gauge 92/8 Phosphor Bronze, model MA140S. The Phosphor Bronze type are much better than the cheaper 80/20 Bronze. Martin sells both types with all different gauges, but they ship most of their guitars with the 92/8 Phosphor Bronze. Stay with them. If you are using your guitar for your own enjoyment you might try using the extra light in 92/8 Phosphor Bronze type. Works good for me. They are listed as model MA170S |
Question: | What are these strings coated with? Leaves black greasy residue on my fingers & causes indentations in fingers with black stuff inside |
Answer: | Bronze. Perfectly safe. Just the skin oils pH reaction to bronzing. Not harmful and it is the same with all guitar strings that are coated with bronze. Nothing to be worried about. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Martin guitar ma550 authentic acoustic medium guitar strings, 92/8 phosphor bronze, are these ball end |
Answer: | Santa Cruz does not supply this information because their whole philosophy behind constructing strings is different. I would guess though that thy are in the medium to medium light category , along the lines of 11-52. Hope that helps. For a better explanation check out their website. |
Question: | Will they fit a MG |
Answer: | I believe they are phosphor bronze, but I'm not certain. Soundwise on a vintage D-18, they are very bright on the attack. High quality strings for sure, but they don't last any longer than Daddario phosphor bronze. |
Question: | Martin silk and steel strings |
Answer: | I used them on a 6-string and since they come in a regular 6 string pack. As far as results go I was pleased but decided to stick with my normal EJ-16s since they were a little brighter on the Taylor. |
