12 best trombone mutes
Trombone mutes are fascinating accessories that add a unique touch to the instrument's sound. These devices alter the timbre and volume of the trombone, providing musicians with a variety of expressive possibilities. Let's dive into some common types of trombone mutes:
Straight Mute: This is the most basic type of mute. It is a cone-shaped device that fits into the bell of the trombone. The straight mute produces a bright, focused sound and is often used in jazz and certain classical pieces.
Cup Mute: Shaped like a cup, this mute creates a warmer, softer tone compared to the straight mute. It's a popular choice in jazz music, adding a mellow quality to the trombone's sound.
Bucket Mute: Resembling a bucket, this mute is designed to produce a muted, vocal-like quality. It's commonly used in jazz and swing music, contributing to the characteristic "wah-wah" sound.
Plunger Mute: Originally a household plunger, this mute is manipulated by hand to create a variety of expressive effects. It's a staple in jazz, often used for comedic or expressive purposes.
Harmon Mute: The Harmon mute, or "wah-wah" mute, has a distinctive shape and a small, adjustable tube.By varying the length of the tube, musicians can create a "wah-wah" effect, commonly heard in jazz and big band music.
Practice Mute: Designed for quiet practice, this mute significantly reduces the volume of the trombone. It allows musicians to practice without disturbing others, making it a valuable tool for late-night or private practice sessions.
Each type of mute contributes to the trombone's versatility, allowing players to explore different tones and textures. The choice of mute depends on the musical genre, the desired effect, and the specific character a musician wants to convey in a performance.

Answer: | Yes...this will work great... |
Question: | Will this work with the jiggs pbone plastic trombone (pbone is distributed worldwide by conn-selmer |
Answer: | Here is a link to Yamaha showing the Yamaha models this will work on. These are pretty much standard in size bells and work on my brands of trombones, The bell size for your pbone is 8" and I don't see where you would have a problem. https://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical_instruments/winds/silent_brass/silent_brass/compatibility_table.html#product-tabs |
Question: | Will this mute work with Bach trombones |
Answer: | I have a Bach and yes it works. |
Question: | What is the difference between this (sb5x2) and the sb5xc model? (not the sb5x, which mrsilvertrumpet explains already, but the model with the "c |
Answer: | Yamaha never came out with a SB5XC. Prior to the SB5X series was the SB59 and then later the SB59C. The "C" stood for an extra 1/8" male to 1/8" male cable that Yamaha provided so that you could hook up your CD or MP3 player to the ST9 Module. When the SB5X model come out the still included this extra cable. So the SB5X has the extra cable the and the SB5X-2 does not. Again, Yamaha never listed the new SB5X with a C. If you are see that somewhere, it is a seller that has created that that model number not Yamaha. I am a authorized dealer with Yamaha for 14 years and know this particular product line very well. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work on a regular trombone? Or just the tenor trombone |
Answer: | Yes, the Blooming Bath Lotus, is our new design. The four petals offer more structure for your baby, and the bath itself is a bit bigger. |
Question: | Is this the old Straightlined mute line |
Answer: | The Blooming Bath is made from antimicrobial foam, polyurethane. Mold or mildew cannot live inside the foam. |
Question: | Does. It work on euphonium |
Answer: | I also have a farm style sink. I put the Blooming Bath inside a plastic beverage tub (sold at party supply stores- think I paid about $10). The plastic tub with Blooming Bath fits inside my sink. Now that I have two kids, I put the plastic tub with the Blooming Bath inside my actual bathtub so I can bathe my 5 year-old in the actual tub, while washing baby at the same time. |
Question: | In the description it says it’s used by brass men everywhere. Is it also used by brass women |
Answer: | I have loved using this in my bathroom sink and it is a small sink, given I am using it for a newborn baby. As the baby grows it will be great in the kitchen sink. I like that you can move the petals for head support. I love mine! |

Needing to practice at odd times and in odd places over the years (and the absence of a suitable musical mute) was the reason Trevor Bremner designed the sshhmute. In development over several years in his New Plymouth workshop, the sshhmute is at long last in full commercial production and has been successfully launched to answer a market need for an effective mute for brass instruments in a price range to suit budding musicians and professionals alike. The sshhmute is made from lightweight, yet hard-wearing, ABS plastic with no parts to break or fall off. Perhaps one of the primary benefits of the sshhMute design when compared with other silent mutes, is the very small amount of back-pressure it creates. This allows for better air supply, while still opening and developing the throat muscles. Our mute also remains in tune and faithfully accurate throughout the entire range.
- Allows a player to practice almost anywhere
- Small amount of back pressure compared to other practice (silent) mutes
- Remains in tune and faithfully accurate throughout the entire range
- Made from lightweight, yet hard-wearing, ABS plastic
- Perfect for warm-ups before going on stage

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this mute made of metal |
Answer: | No, The bell throat sizes of the the 2 horns are very different and it will not fit |
Question: | Does it come with a case |
Answer: | Works well with Large bore trombones...just do not cram it too far into the bell...sometimes if the cork swells it might get a little stuck...but you should be able to get it out easy enough. Great warm up mute!!! |
Question: | My grandson asked for a B-Flat Trombone mute. Since I can't find the B-Flat one, I'm assuming this will work |
Answer: | I think it should, it's pretty small - it fits well into my trombone bell. |
Question: | will these work on my product |
Answer: | Yes it's softer than a Silent Brass mute, but it's really only suitable to use as a warm up mute - it's WAY too stuffy and out of tune to be used as a practice mute, in spite of how it's advertised. It does, however, mute the sound quite well and it's very lightweight; I use it often to warm up in situations where I don't want to disturb others. I also have a Silent Brass system and it's a true practice mute - the electronics allow you to listen to yourself and play along with an MP3 player using headphones. The drawback of Silent Brass is it's quite heavy and you get tired rather quickly while using it. The e-Brass / Best Brass system might serve both purposes much better, but it's quite expensive. Pick your poison! |
