13 best auto wah pedals

Auto wah pedals are a type of effects pedal used in the world of guitar and other musical instruments. They are designed to automatically control the wah-wah effect, which is a dynamic filtering effect often used in funk, rock, and various other musical genres. Here's what you should know about auto wah pedals:

  1. Wah-Wah Effect: The wah-wah effect is characterized by a sweeping, vowel-like sound created by altering the frequency response of an instrument. It mimics the human voice saying "wah," which is how it got its name.

  2. Manual vs. Auto Wah: Traditional wah pedals require the guitarist to manually control the effect by rocking their foot on a pedal. In contrast, auto wah pedals automate this process, eliminating the need for the player to control it manually.

  3. Sensitivity Control: Auto wah pedals typically have controls to adjust the sensitivity or response of the effect. This allows the player to tailor the wah effect to their playing dynamics.

  4. Rate and Depth Controls: Some auto wah pedals offer rate and depth controls to adjust the speed and intensity of the wah effect. These controls allow for a wide range of sonic possibilities.

  5. Envelopes and Filters: Auto wah pedals use envelopes and filters to analyze the input signal's amplitude and adjust the filter cutoff frequency accordingly. When you play harder or softer, the effect changes in response.

  6. Expression Pedal Compatibility: Many auto wah pedals are compatible with expression pedals. This means that you can still control the wah-wah effect manually if desired, in addition to the automated mode.

  7. Use in Different Genres: Auto wah pedals are popular in funk and rock music due to their ability to add expressive and dynamic textures to guitar solos and rhythm parts. However, they can be used in various musical genres to create unique tonal variations.

  8. Notable Models: There are several popular auto wah pedals on the market, including the Boss AW-3, Electro-Harmonix Q-Tron, and the MXR Envelope Filter.

  9. Signal Chain: Auto wah pedals are typically placed in the signal chain after the guitar and before other effects such as distortion, delay, and reverb. This allows the wah effect to be applied to the modified guitar signal.

  10. Experimentation: Auto wah pedals, like other effects, offer a wide range of sonic possibilities. Musicians often experiment with different settings and playing techniques to create unique sounds and textures.

Auto wah pedals are a versatile tool for guitarists and other musicians looking to add expressive and dynamic effects to their sound. They offer a unique way to shape the character of their instrument and create distinctive tones.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this pedal ok for using with a Bass guitar
Answer: The envelope filter effect is made for bass, and used by Flea and Les Claypool on the songs Thai Noodles and Sir Psycho Sexy respectively.
Question: It's made for electric guitar or will be weak for that
Answer: What exactly is the question? It's an electric guitar pedal. Works on acoustic too. Overall, not a great product, but works for an added effect, or keep level know turned down, for a muted, squawks tone
Question: How does the auto wah effects respond
Answer: It is mainly the peak and sensitivity setting to decide how the auto wah effect respond. Peak knob sets how high the wah goes and sensitivity knob sets how hard we play to engage the effect. Hope this helps.

Mooer Audio Micro Envelope Analog Auto Wah Effect Pedal

MOOER

Based on 42 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The 'Envelope' from MOOER is a pocket sized 'envelope filter'/'dynamic auto wah' pedal with big tone and lots of versatility. The sensitivity control allows you to dial in the effect to respond to the dynamics of your playing and the pickups of any instrument in the way you want it to. Exaggerated slap back funk, subtle sultry ambiance, static frequency filter effects and many more are all easily obtainable with this little pedal. The 100% analog circuit provides a lush warm sound and the wide range of the controls make the Envelope from MOOER ideal for use with both guitar and bass. ControlsSENSITIVITY:The sensitivity control adjusts the dynamic response of the envelope filter in relation to the input from the instrument. Clockwise makes the pedal more sensitive and responsive to pick attack and makes it easier to open the filter. Counter clockwise makes the pedal less sensitive to pick attack and makes it more difficult to open the filter. (Note: Sensitivity is set differently depending on which guitar pickups you use and what the desired response from the pedal is of the user. Recommended starting position is 12 o'clock and adjust from there accordingly.) Q:This control changes the Q of the wah effect. Clockwise will make the Q value higher providing a more narrow frequency band but a higher peak. This results in a very exaggerated and pronounced wah sound. Counterclockwise will lower the Q value, providing a wider frequency band and a lower peak. This results in a more subtle wah effect. DECAY:The Decay Control adjusts the release and closing of the filter. Clockwise gives a longer decay and counterclockwise gives a shorter decay.Note: This is also dependant on the sensitivity settings and the attack of the instrument. TONE:The tone control adjusts the overall tone and frequency range of the pedal. Clockwise will give a brighter tone and a higher frequency range. Counterclockwise will give a rounder tone and a lower frequency range. C

User questions & answers

Question: Is it true bypass
Answer: Yes.
Question: How does this compare to the classic mxr envelope filter
Answer: I would say there are two key differences: possible user control and “cleanliness”. The classic MXR is dirty. Sound comes out distorted pretty much no matter what you do. The Mooer sound is always clean. Pair with a distortion or compressor pedal after the fact to get the grittier feel if you want it. The classic MXR lacks the range control of the Mooer. With this pedal, you can adjust the swept frequencies for ideal use with guitar or bass, as opposed to the classic, which had a distinct guitar and bass version. (I originally purchased this pedal for use with keyboard, and as long as you stay in one part of the range, it works great, but if you’re using a full keyboard, the effect is less noticeable in whichever parts of the frequency spectrums you don’t have the pedal set to.) One super minor inconvenience is that this pedal does not have the option to be battery powered. That hasn’t been a problem for me, but if you really like having a totally mobile rig, this is not a good fit.
