10 best twelve string acoustic guitars
A twelve-string acoustic guitar is a type of acoustic guitar that features twelve strings, grouped in pairs of two.The lower four strings (E, A, D, and G) are paired with an octave higher counterpart, while the upper two strings (B and high E) have a unison pairing. This configuration results in a rich and distinctive sound.
Here are some key points about twelve-string acoustic guitars:
String Configuration:
- The twelve strings are arranged in six pairs, with each pair consisting of one thicker string and one thinner string tuned to the same note, with one an octave higher.
Tuning:
- The standard tuning for a twelve-string guitar is EADGBE for the lower four strings, similar to a six-string guitar, but with the addition of the higher octave pairs (EE, AA, DD, GG, BB, EE).
Sound and Tone:
- The twelve-string configuration produces a lush, chiming sound due to the paired strings, creating a sense of depth and richness in the tone.
- The doubled strings, especially in the higher register, provide a unique shimmering quality to the sound.
Playing Techniques:
- Playing a twelve-string guitar requires some adjustment in playing techniques compared to a six-string guitar, particularly in terms of fingerpicking and strumming to accommodate the paired strings.
- Some guitarists use a mix of fingerstyle and flatpicking techniques to make the most of the instrument's unique sound.
Musical Styles and Usage:
- Twelve-string guitars are used in a variety of musical genres, including folk, rock, country, and blues.
- They are popular in folk and acoustic music due to their distinct sound, often used to create a fuller, resonant accompaniment.
Construction and Design:
- The construction of a twelve-string guitar involves reinforcing the neck and body to withstand the increased tension from the additional strings.
- The guitar's body is usually larger than a standard six-string acoustic guitar to enhance the volume and resonance of the sound.
Maintenance and String Changes:
- Maintaining a twelve-string guitar involves regular tuning, proper storage, and occasional adjustments to the truss rod to account for the increased string tension.
- String changes can be a bit more intricate due to the doubled strings, requiring care to ensure proper intonation and tuning.
In summary, a twelve-string acoustic guitar is a unique musical instrument known for its distinctive sound produced by doubled strings, making it a popular choice among musicians seeking a fuller and richer tonal palette.

Classic Design guitars combine the timelessness of tried-and-true body shapes with top-notch craftsmanship and modern features that will appeal to beginner and intermediate guitarists alike. Solid Spruce Top
Spruce is the standard modern tonewood for fashioning the tops of acoustic guitars and other acoustic instruments. Few woods can beat its strength, brightness, and dynamic range, and it responds well to any acoustic playing style, from hard strumming to fast flatpicking to delicate fingerpicking.
Easy-to-Play Neck & Cutaway Design
With its comfortably rolled fingerboard edges, this instrument’s neck creates an incredibly comfortable fret-hand feel that's ideal for beginning players or experienced pros alike. The cutaway on this classic dreadnought offers easy access to the upper frets for high-register play.
Fishman Presys Preamp and Tuner
A Fishman pickup/preamp system includes a variety of onboard controls for amplifying your acoustic instrument without compromising its pure, rich, and resonant tone. It also features a convenient built-in tuner.
Ovangkol Back & Sides
With solid strength, smooth feel and excellent tonal quality, ovangkol gives this guitar an elegant appearance with rich, warm tone. A relative of rosewood, ovangkol shares many of its tonal characteristics, while visually it sometimes looks lighter in appearance.
Graph Tech NuBone Nut and Bridge Saddle

Neither too soft nor too brittle, NuBone’s properties are remarkably close to real bone, and eliminate troublesome string binding while delivering performance and functionality that easily outdoes other plastics.

User questions & answers
Question: | can u put strap on it |
Answer: | The nut width is 5cm/1.97", and the width of the 12th fret is 5.8cm/2.3", it is slightly wider than 6 strings model but won't be too large to hold and the strings are at a comfortable distance for picking. |
Question: | What is the difference between this one and the $1000 one |
Answer: | Strings come in many gauges, Light gauge strings,1st E 009 to 011 are the easiest to finger but give the brightest sound, good for Bluegrass. Higher gauge strings mellower, good for rhythm playing. If you are starting out on guitar I would suggest a light gauge until you build build up blisters. Also if you are just learning the guitar, a six string would of been a better choice |
Question: | which is the difference between the gd30ce and gd51ce ? , which is better |
Answer: | It comes pre-packaged with a 9 volt battery. However, mine was wrapped in plastic. That plastic would need to be removed before the battery will make contact with the electronics. The battery operates the EQ and the pre-amp used to connect this guitar to an external amplifier for live performance. Or, to a soundboard. Neither are required if just playing around a camp fire or in your living room. |
Question: | Is this made in Japan |
Answer: | my guitar did not come with pickups so i ADDED them but you can use any pedal, a delay, and chorus sounds beautiful on a 12 string |

Strum confidently with the same premium acoustic guitar strings that experienced players worldwide trust to keep their incredible tone longer than any other string available. Unlike other string brands, Elixir Strings coats the whole string. This protects not only the outer string surface but also the gaps between the windings where common tone-deadening gunk typically builds up in other brands’ coated and uncoated guitar strings. Anti-Rust Plating on plain steel strings ensures longer tone life for the entire set. Who wouldn’t love more quality playing time between the hassle and cost of string changes? Engineered to endure, these acoustic strings constructed with phosphor bronze wrap wire boast a dynamic balance of rich, full-bodied tone and sparkling high-end clarity. Compared to our original POLYWEB Coating, the ultra-thin NANOWEB Coating allows a more traditionally textured, “uncoated” feel. For a slicker, gentler feel, try a set of strings with our original POLYWEB Coating. The 80/20 Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings with POLYWEB Coating, for example, might be a good fit if you want a more robust and rounded tone. On the other end of the tone spectrum, our 80/20 Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings with NANOWEB Coating deliver a brighter, crisper tone alongside the same traditional feel as these phosphor bronze strings. Of course, the kind of string you play is all a matter of personal preference. Not sure what tone or feel is right for you? Try them out for yourself, and find your new favorite string from Elixir Strings. For a more in-depth look at what makes our strings so special, scroll to the branded info further down the page. User questions & answers
Question: | Would you recommend this for a Taylor 816ce |
Answer: | I have a 614ce and these are perfect! The custom lights (.11) are also acceptable but you may lose some volume, still they sound good. I would play around with gauges and get the best feel and sound for you! Taylors are high class! |
Question: | how many strings are in the package |
Answer: | This is a full set of 6 strings for acoustic guitar. |
Question: | Are all 6 strings supposed to be bronze and nano coated, or are the E-1 and B-2 anti-rust plain steel |
Answer: | On the individual strings' paper packets, only the wound strings (G-3 through E-6) have "Nanoweb coating" text. The E-1 and B-2 strings say "anti-rust plain steel" instead. |
Question: | What is the difference in sound between an 80/20 and phosphor bronze please? And poly and nano web? Which is warmer, less bright |
Answer: | 80/20 is very bright and crisp... Phosphor bronze is far more articulate and warm. And over all a more balanced sound. Hence why they cost a bit more than 80/20. As for poly vs nano? Poly has more coating to protect the strings.. But dull the sound a bit. Nano has less coating but last a bit less than poly. Hope that helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Solid wood or laminate, top sides |
Answer: | Solid wood |
Question: | What is wrong with this guitar that makes it only 200 dollars |
Answer: | I haven't found anything yet, and I've been looking. Some of the others left some negative comments. Maybe I just got lucky. Don't think so, though. Great guitar for the money. The only criticism, if you want to call it that, is that it doesn't come with the greatest strings in the world. I didn't expect that it would, though. Few guitars outside of the high dollar ones do; and they don't always. I bought a Taylor (6 string) a while back. The strings were fair, I guess. Elixirs make a big difference, though. Really anxious to re-string this 12 string with Elixirs. But, the stock strings are fine for now. |
Question: | What hard case is available for this instrument |
Answer: | This guitar comes with no case...Thanks for inquiring...GTRstore |
Question: | Does this guitar have an amp hookup |
Answer: | No, it's straight acoustic. |

The unmistakable sound of a well-made 12-string guitar is perfect for solo gigs and band performances, especially when it was designed by the founder of influential U.S. punk band Rancid. Tim Armstrong's Hellcat is based on the old Fender acoustic that was his go-to guitar for songwriting, and quickly became one of the best-selling Fender acoustic artist models ever. With the Tim Armstrong Hellcat-12, that same classic vibe is offered in a 12-string version that simply rocks. Whether it's alt-folk tunes at the college coffeehouse or slamming punk with a band, the Hellcat-12 combines great acoustic tone with versatile onboard electronics and a satin body and neck finish for smooth playability, all at a surprisingly low cost.

Question: | Is this guitar made in usa or china |
Answer: | China. But for the price, it’s a nice 12 string. My first one was defective. A separation at the neck & body joint. Fender took care of it. A complete replacement, no charge to me. |
