14 best traveller guitars
Traveler guitars are compact and portable instruments designed for musicians on the go. They are a subset of acoustic guitars and offer several features and advantages tailored to travelers and musicians who need a compact and easily transportable option. Here's what you need to know about traveler guitars:
Compact Size: Traveler guitars are significantly smaller than standard acoustic guitars. They are designed to be highly portable, making them suitable for travel, backpacking, or situations where space is limited.
Quality Construction: Despite their smaller size, many traveler guitars are constructed with quality materials to ensure good sound and playability. They often feature solid wood tops for resonance and tone.
Full-Scale Length: Traveler guitars typically maintain a full-scale length, which means the distance between the nut and the bridge is the same as a standard guitar. This ensures that players can transition easily between a traveler guitar and a regular one.
Variety of Styles: Traveler guitars come in various styles, including acoustic, acoustic-electric, and electric. This variety allows musicians to choose the type of sound and style that suits their preferences.
Foldable or Detachable Design: Some traveler guitars have innovative designs that allow them to fold or have detachable components, making them even more portable and easy to pack in a backpack or carry-on luggage.
Built-in Electronics: Many traveler guitars are equipped with built-in electronics, including pickups and preamps. This enables players to amplify their sound when performing in different settings.
Headphone Compatibility: Some traveler guitars come with headphone jacks, which is a convenient feature for practicing quietly or playing without disturbing others.
Carry Cases: Traveler guitars often come with custom carry cases that provide protection during transport and storage. These cases are designed to fit the compact dimensions of the guitar.
Accessories: Traveler guitars may be compatible with a range of accessories, such as straps, stands, and amplifiers, which can enhance the playing experience and versatility of the instrument.
Great for Beginners and Professionals: Traveler guitars are suitable for both beginners and professional musicians. Beginners can learn on a traveler guitar, and professionals can use them for practice or impromptu performances.
Travel-Friendly: These guitars are ideal for musicians who travel frequently or want a guitar they can easily take to different locations, whether for performance, recording, or personal enjoyment.
In summary, traveler guitars are compact, portable instruments designed to cater to the needs of musicians on the move. They come in various styles, offer quality construction, and often feature built-in electronics, making them versatile choices for both practice and performance, especially in situations where space and portability are essential.

User questions & answers
Question: | The guitar was missing one strap button, shouldn’t there be two |
Answer: | This model, like a lot of cheaper acoustics, only has one. The easiest thing to do is tie the other end of the strap to the headstock, by the nut. Or you could have a second button installed at a guitar shop (or on your own if you're brave). |
Question: | How long is the delivery? I need it on 27 for a present |
Answer: | Probably won't make it in time now |
Question: | How hard is it to tune yourself when you first get it? (Total rookie here- wanting to start learning |
Answer: | There is a tuner. You just set it to the guitar and plink a string, then the tuner shows the tone. It’s very easy. I was a very beginner but could tune it immediately. |
Question: | What’s the size difference between kid size and this guitar. It’s for an 8 year old. Is this too big |
Answer: | Yes, it's going to be too big for most 8-year olds. I'd recommend that you go to a regular guitar store and try several out before making your decision, so you have some benchmarks to help you decide. There are 3/4 sized guitars which sound pretty decent for beginners, and also there are cutaways and double cutaways (Yamaha for example) with thinner bodies that make it easier for a child or small adult to learn. Also ask about the "scale" of the guitar. Regular scale is 25.5 inches, but slightly shorter guitars will be easier for children and small adults to play. I recommend that you buy a brand name, as well. If the guitar is well-made, the person is more likely to stay with it and end up learning to play the guitar. |

User questions & answers
Question: | No whammy bar. Tramollo is important for blues. 1 pickup, no pickup switch, sacrificing function for form factor |
Answer: | An inexpensive travel guitar won’t have a vibrato arm, or as Leo Fender liked to call it, Tremolo. The pickup sounds nice for the money and should give a good basic sound for most styles. If you expect it to sound like a pre-cbs strat, then you’re not really talking about a cheap travel guitar. If you want a travel guitar that ticks all the boxes, get an Erlewine Lazer. It’s only $1500.00 |
Question: | What's the weight of this guitar |
Answer: | A little over 4 lbs |
Question: | What wood is the body (laminate?) and neck made of? What wood is the fingerboard |
Answer: | Hofner says it’s a Basswood body, which seems about right. The neck is maple, with no stripe. The fretboard is rosewood. |
Question: | Does this come with a gig bag |
Answer: | I bought one (it was brand new) and it came with a gig bag. |

Full Sound, Full Scale, Compact Size
'The Hofner Shorty Electric Travel Guitar was first produced back in the 1980s and Hofner continue to offer this compact travel guitar for those guitarists who can't bear to be without a guitar even when on holiday! The Hofner Shorty offers full scale length combined with such small overall dimensions that it can be taken anywhere. Comes loaded with a great-sounding Hofner Open Humbucker.
Unique Dimensions
The issue with many travel guitars is the lack of a full scale neck. While a shorter neck means more portability, it compromises the approach and nuances that make a player comfortable with their guitar.
The Hofner Shorty guitars took that issue and did away with it. With a full scale neck, the only part of the guitar that's "shorty" is the body- which makes for a tasteful design that allows the user to practice and travel practically, as well as sensibly.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the total length of this |
Answer: | 32" end to end |
Question: | What is the sound quality |
Answer: | Actually the sound quality is amazing. The humbucker is super sensitive. The lack of onboard volume control is an issue when playing live. But after touching up the frets, restringing with lightweight flatwound strings, run through my modeling setup I can barely distingush it from my hollowbody jazz guitars. Think of it as a controller more thana stand alone guitar . |
Question: | where is it made |
Answer: | Their home office is in Escondido, California and they also have an office in Hong Kong. |
Question: | Trying to choose between anygig & traveler travel guitars....does anyone have an opinion |
Answer: | The quality of the anygig was suprising low. They look very similar, but looking at the tuner placement, logo placard, and strap mount Id say the traveler uses better design and materials. The anygigs tuners stick into your stomach, the placard is plastic and loosely fastened with a single philips, and the metal strap hook thing they tried is just horrendous. If you plan on modifing the heck out of it like I did then maybe go anygig cause i think its a little smaller, but if you want quality out of the box.. you might get it with the traveler. Idk.. I only have the anygig |

What makes Anygig the leader in travel guitars?
When we were designing the Anygig core model, our main focus was to keep it simple, balanced, portable, and most of all, play great. Most travel guitars have a shorter scale length than normal. This in turn can change the way you play or even limit the sound of the instrument. The Anygig has a full 25.5" scale just like your guitar at home so no transition is needed to get use to.

User questions & answers
Question: | What hard case does this use |
Answer: | Yes the tamper fits 58mm portafilter baskets well. |
Question: | How long can you expect a set of batteries to last with this and can it be used with rechargeable batteries |
Answer: | I don't think so. |
Question: | How difficult is it to change the electronics with one of these? I like this guitar but I also like more of a metal style |
Answer: | No, it is 2 separate pieces. The top black section is a hard plastic, the bottom is stainless steel and they screw together. It's pretty tight, but you could put some loctite on the threads if you wanted it to never come apart. I don't see it as an issue. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you miss having something for your right arm to rest on? the pro mod x guitar has something for your arm to rest on like a full bodied guitar |
Answer: | I found one in my local music shop that was for a bass Uke or something similar |
Question: | Does traveler guitar pro work with rocksmith ps4 to learn guitar |
Answer: | I've played for several hours at least, though I often practice without turning the guitar on, so I'm not quite sure how long they'd last. I thought I'd respond to your question though in order to simply say that I've been really, really happy with this guitar, overall. Honestly, it's a beautiful, sturdy, well-made instrument, and surpassed my expectations. |
Question: | Is It real silent when I put on the stethoscope / headphone? So I could practice without disturbing my family or next seat |
Answer: | I haven't chagrin the electronics The guitar has a good distortion setting and a overdrive setting They also sell a model with active pickup you might like better |
Question: | Does the guitar have spots for a strap |
Answer: | You can choose the size you need when ordering, so you wouldn't have to use just a 51mm. This size would fit into the 58mm, but would take more time to get it tamped down. I would suggest ordering one specifically sized for 58mm. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work with Nylon strings |
Answer: | Indeed... nearly returned it due to that reason. But I came up with a strap that works well and that stabilizes the guitar. So I kept it and am happy now that I did. |
Question: | How do I get a manual for my guitar or at least a link to a manual? I requested one from traveler with no response |
Answer: | Yes, any electric guitar with a 1/4" jack will work. |
Question: | Is this guitar "comfortable" to play with? Can I rest my arm on the body of this for strumming? I can't with the Ultra-Lite - my arm starts to cramp |
Answer: | It is not Silent, but it is not a hollow body design so no sound resonates from the body. It is quieter than anything else you could play though, I would say it's great for practicing in the back seat without bothering the other occupants in the car. |
Question: | Is It silent when I put on the headphone? So I could practice without disturbing my family at mid-night. Thanks |
Answer: | Yes, it has pins that accommodate a standard strap. You can see where the pins attach on the backside views. The balance takes some getting used to, but it's probably more getting used to how little the whole thing weighs. |
