13 best phono cartridge p mounts
A phono cartridge P-mount, also known as a "P-mount cartridge," is a type of turntable cartridge used in record players, particularly in consumer-oriented and entry-level turntables. It is related to turntable cartridges, accessories, DJ equipment, electronic music, DJ karaoke, and musical instruments. Here's what you need to know about P-mount cartridges:
Compatibility: P-mount cartridges are designed to be easily interchangeable and compatible with turntables that have a P-mount tonearm. These cartridges feature a standardized T4P (Tetrad P-mount) connector, making them simple to install and remove without the need for alignment adjustments.
Ease of Use: One of the key advantages of P-mount cartridges is their user-friendliness. You don't need to worry about aligning the cartridge, setting tracking force, or adjusting anti-skate settings, as these parameters are typically pre-set and fixed by the manufacturer. This simplicity is ideal for beginners or those who want a hassle-free setup.
Limited Adjustability: While the simplicity of P-mount cartridges is a benefit, it can also be a limitation for those seeking more control over their turntable setup. Audiophiles and DJs who demand precise adjustments might prefer standard mount cartridges, which offer more customization options.
Sound Quality: P-mount cartridges can provide decent sound quality, especially for casual listening. However, high-end audiophiles may find that standard mount cartridges offer better sound quality and more options for upgrading to premium stylus and cartridge combinations.
Stylus Replacement: When the stylus (needle) on a P-mount cartridge wears out or gets damaged, it can typically be replaced by simply snapping on a new stylus designed for that specific cartridge model. This is a straightforward and cost-effective way to maintain your turntable's performance.
Upgrading: While P-mount cartridges are generally associated with entry-level turntables, some manufacturers produce higher-quality P-mount cartridges that can offer better sound performance. If you're looking to upgrade your turntable's sound quality, you might consider investing in a higher-end P-mount cartridge.
Availability: P-mount cartridges and styluses are widely available and can be found at electronics stores, music equipment shops, and online retailers. They come in a range of price points to suit different budgets.
In summary, P-mount cartridges are a convenient option for those who want a hassle-free and beginner-friendly turntable setup. They are easy to install and replace, making them a popular choice for entry-level and budget-conscious users. However, for audiophiles and DJs seeking advanced customization options and the highest possible sound quality, standard mount cartridges might be a more suitable choice.

If your particular arm has 4 wires (green, blue, red, white) dangling free, and the cartridge is fastened to the arm by to screws and bolts, only then is this cartridge not compatible. If you had to pull out, "un-plug", the old cartridge, then this cartridge should work. |

The stylus features a tipped Elliptical diamond and split pole pins with a copper wire. The cartridge body is manufactured from Hopelex which ensures high rigidity while eliminating unwanted resonances.
2M Red is an all-purpose cartridge that delivers open, dynamic sound with a slight touch of warmth.
Included with 2M Red:
History of the 2M Series
The 2M Series was developed in conjunction with the Danish designer Moeller Jensen Design. Inspired by the facets of a diamond, whose contours gracefully trace the grooves on a record’s surface, the 2M’s handsome elegance establishes a great combination of form and functionality.
Of course, the 2M isn’t just another pretty face. It has been engineered to the highest standards and is congruent with Ortofon’s unrelenting commitment to providing the most precise and accurate reproduction possible without coloration.
The name “2M” was chosen as it represents the abbreviation for moving magnet, MM.
The four-model 2M line was originally introduced in 2008, and since then the range has been extended to include True-mono models 2M MONO and 78. Also available are models with expanded mounting options, such as Verso for bottom mount headshells and PnP for direct mounting on arms with universal mount.
Advancements in Sound
The differences among the 2M variants concern three primary areas: engine, body material and stylus profile.
The entire 2M Series features Ortofon’s split pole pins, an invention which enables moving magnet cartridges to have a flat frequency response as with a moving coil cartridge. Split pole pins were invented by Ortofon and were originally presented in the 500 and Ortofon OM Super Series.
The 2M 78, 2M Mono, 2M Red and 2M Blue use an improved engine, which provides an optimized sound reproduction and a high level of sonic accuracy.
The 2M Bronze and 2M Black use a special upgraded engine, featuring split pole pins with a silver-plated copper wire. The cartridge body material used for the 2M Bronze and 2M Black is manufactured from Lexan DMX Piano Black, a revolutionary material which ensures high rigidity while eliminating unwanted resonances.
Product of Denmark
Today Ortofon is a micro-mechanical powerhouse, which develops, manufactures and markets the world acclaimed Ortofon cartridges and components for the hearing aids industry.
We benefit from being established in Denmark, a country recognized for its strong tradition in acoustics and its wealth of other high-end manufacturers, who make hearing aids and acoustic measurement equipment, in addition to all aspects of high-end audio.
Ortofon is owned by Danish businessmen and employs a staff of 100 people. The Ortofon manufacturing unit in Nakskov in the south of Denmark has modern machinery combined with experienced operators, so human craftsmanship is delivered with uniform industrial quality.
Care of Stylus
With proper care we find that up to 1,000 hours is possible without degradation of performance. The stylus does begin to exhibit changes after 1,000 hours, but the stylus life as a whole is expected to top 2,000 hours.
Proper care is comprised of the following:
• Cleaning of record by means of fibre brush before and after every use. Cleaning of record by using record cleaning machine once in a while.
• Cleaning of stylus by means of a fine antistatic brush. Please remember to remove dust from the diamond tip before and after playback of each record. Use the brush in the forward direction from the rear of the cartridge towards the stylus tip, never from stylus tip to the rear of the cartridge and never from side to side.
• Proper adjustment of alignment, antiskating, azimuth and tracking force.
• Ortofon do not recommend the use of solvents of any kind for cleaning of either record surface or stylus.
Ease of Use
The weight and dimensions of the 2M Series have been optimized to fit the most common turntables on the market today. The cartridge body has also been streamlined to provide easy mounting and alignment. The 2M series features threaded holes that allows for easy mounting on tonearm and headshells without nuts. 2M cartridges provide excellent compatibility in an assortment of playback systems and with a wide variety of phono preamps
In the beginning was the sound track
On the 9th of October 1918, the two Danish engineers, Axel Petersen (1887-1971) and Arnold Poulsen (1889-1952) founded the Electrical Phono Film Company with a few capable and foresighted businessmen who would support the organization financially.
Their aim was to explore the possibility of high-class recording and developing one of the first synchronized sound film systems in the world. Under primitive conditions, the two Danish engineers and their small staff had to solve a number of what were considered insuperable problems.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work with my Bang & Olufsen Beogram |
Answer: | Nothing but beogram cartridges will work with B&O turntables. Other guy answer suggested that you need p-mount cartridge and that was incorrect. |
Question: | Will this work for my sony ps-lx |
Answer: | Does your sony PS-LX435 have a standard 1/2" bayonet release headshell attached to the tonearm? Then yes. Is it a linear P-mount? Then no. |
Question: | Does the stylus come with a guard? And if not where could I buy one |
Answer: | yes. slip on clear soft plastic, covers the stylus. |
Question: | For Whatever reasons this cartridge seems to be lightly scraping up against my vinyl. Can anyone tell me why that is? It's becoming really annoying |
Answer: | When you say "scraping against vinyl", do you mean that the base of it is touching the record surface? If yes, there could be 4 reasons: 1. The tracking force is too high, 2. The cantilever is damaged and doesn't form the correct angle with the base, as shown on the pic., 3a. The longitudinal axis of the tonearm is at a wrong angle to the record (some arms' pivots have height adjustment), or 3b. The slipmat is too thick - e.g. you put a new one on the turntable without removing the existing one.Or, it's making a scratchy sound, but doesn't seem to be physically grinding against the record? |

Sumiko's Pearl is Sonic Elegance Defined Designed by audiophiles, for audiophiles, the Pearl offers a surprising amount of refinement at a very reasonable price. Smooth and extended top frequencies, free of grain and with low surface noise, the Pearl has very good resolution and a touch of midrange warmth make it the ideal choice for all types of music. Like all Sumiko cartridges, the Pearl offers excellent rhythmic drive with solid bass and good propulsion of the lower frequencies. Sumiko cartridges have long been known for offering a high level of performance, but the Pearl's level of musical involvement is unusual in cartridges at this level. The Pearl's elliptical grind stylus offers low noise and high tracking ability. Taking advantage of the stylus's capabilities, Sumiko created a high-power generating system for the Pearl with fewer windings than traditional MM designs allowing the Pearl to offer higher output without sonic penalty. Although much attention has been lavished on Sumiko's higher end designs, we believe the Pearl deserves equal attention. Everyone knows reviewers like expensive cartridges and few will consider inexpensive cartridges. Sumiko's Pearl is a truly excellent MM cartridge, we feel the Pearl is the jewel of the line and should be on any analog lover's short list.
- Cartridge Type: MM
- Frequency Response: 12Hz – 30KHz
- Channel Separation: 30db
- Stylus Size: 0.2µx0.8µ

User questions & answers
Question: | would this fit a Yamaha tt300u |
Answer: | It should technically. However I would first check if the counterweight is adjustable. It is hard to see it in pictures online. If yes, then it fits. If no, then you need to check in manual, if the fixed weight fits this cartridge. Hope that helped |
Question: | Is this a good replacement for my Denon 59l table need a moving magnetic cartridge to match Denon avr 3600 phono stage |
Answer: | To my knowledge a cartridge isn’t designed to match a phono stage or vice versa. Do some sound better or worse with certain ones? Possibly. It’s really dependent on all kinds of things such as the rest of your equipment, listening environment, etc. This is a cool conical stylus that sounds pretty darn good for a conical stylus and the cartridge is upgradeable simply by replacing the stylus with another one from the same series, which I did after a few months and it made a huge difference. Do yourself a favor and go ahead and buy the orange one that’s two steps above this one. It has a nude elliptical stylus that really shines. |
Question: | How does this sound on 45 rpm 12" vinyl? Is there any noticeable difference? Is it just as good, or is elliptical better? Thanks |
Answer: | I just played a new 45 rpm 12” record with the AT VM95c and it sounded great. Of course there are better sounding cartridges and stylus but they are more costly. |
Question: | Will this work on a sl-230 technics turntable |
Answer: | Yes absolutely so long as the tumtable is in working order and complete with tonearm and headshell. Best regards, LP GEAR |

Our VM95 Series dual moving magnet cartridges can be used almost forever by replacing the interchangeable stylus. It is no longer necessary to purchase a complete cartridge when your diamond is worn out, you can simply buy the matching replacement stylus, but also enjoy the experience of upgrading your cartridge with a different stylus.

AT-VM9E Series Compatibility with the AT-XP Series DJ Cartridges

Or vice versa, if you determine that you do not need the performance of your existing cartridge, then you can choose a less capable stylus to lower performance. With LP GEAR cartridges, you decide how far you want to go with your music.
The LP Gear T4P Reference Series VML offers pinnacle performance, musicality and fidelity. It features a nude Microline diamond tip, each exquisitely polished to perfection and then carefully mounted on a thin alloy tubular cantilever for long playing life and exceptional tracing of record grooves. Due to the Microline's exceptional extractive prowess, it is featured only in the top cartridge models where detail and clarity are paramount performance objectives.
