13 best latin percussion maracas
Latin percussion maracas are traditional hand percussion instruments widely used in Latin American and Caribbean music. They are a vital component of the percussion family, specifically falling into the category of shakers. Maracas are often made from gourds or wooden shells and filled with beads, seeds, or small stones. The distinctive sound is produced when the contents inside the maracas hit the walls as the player shakes them.
These instruments are held in the hand and shaken to create rhythmic patterns and accents in music. The sound they produce can range from a subtle, gentle shaking to a lively and vibrant rattling, depending on the intensity and speed of the shake.
Maracas are commonly used in various musical genres, including salsa, merengue, cumbia, and other Latin styles. They contribute to the lively, upbeat, and festive nature of the music, often adding a colorful and dynamic dimension to the overall sound.
In terms of construction, the traditional maracas consist of a hollow shell, usually made of wood or dried gourd, which is filled with seeds, beads, or pebbles. Modern maracas, however, can also be made from materials like plastic or fiberglass. The size, shape, and materials used can influence the pitch, volume, and timbre of the maracas.
Musicians and percussionists often use pairs of maracas, one in each hand, to achieve a balanced and rhythmic sound. They can control the dynamics and intensity of the sound by adjusting the speed and force of the shaking.
In summary, Latin percussion maracas are essential hand percussion instruments in the realm of folk and world music, particularly within Latin American and Caribbean musical traditions. They are known for their lively, rhythmic sound and are a vital part of the percussion family, enhancing musical performances and encouraging audience participation.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the length of these maracas and how big is the head? Thank you |
Answer: | Hey, Adam. They are about an inch across and 4.25 inches in circumference. They are fairly large as jingle bells go, but produce a delightful sleigh bell sound. I have one antique sleigh bell ( over 100 years old) and they sound almost as good as it does. The bar is heavier than I thought it would be and I use it two handed, but the weight gives it a nice tone. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I’m confused with this product. I’m reading the reviews here, but there are reviews on maracas? Is this product a cajon (with the bag), or maracas |
Answer: | Yes it is a 2 set and small size. |
Question: | Can anyone tell me the diameter of the individual bells |
Answer: | No, both the same size & sound |
Question: | Does it come assembled |
Answer: | I ordered a small in this harness because the XS that I ordered in a different style was too small. My Shih Tzu puppy was about 6 to 7 pounds when ordered. She slipped out of it the first time, but I tightened the Velcro and never had another problem. She is 11 pounds now and it still fits fine. Love this harness and leash combo so ordered a medium for when she reaches her max of 14-15 pounds. |
Question: | This is crazy. the photo and the description is about a tambourine. the questions and reviews are other products. how do i know what i'm buying |
Answer: | Contact Amazon - they’ll correct it. |

Cymbals CAN be loud too...if you let them
Here's an industry secret—we actually read your reviews. The one thing on most customer's minds with these maracas? If you've done the research already, you know the answer.
If not, here's the spoiler: LOUD VOLUME.
It's true, the Meinl Concert Maracas can cut through just about any mix. And you can space yourself from a microphone if you're playing hard. But why so "loud"?
Think about a drum set player. He or she has the ability to fill any dynamic space from soft jazz to full on rock. It is completely up to the player to decide the intensity. The central design of these maracas follows the same idea.
Start big and work small, YOU get to decide the volume level from a light shake or tap to energetic maraca patterns.
These are NOT toys.
Who are Meinl Concert Maracas made for?
On the drum kit, you could replace your hihat for a song with an 8th note maraca pulse. Percussionists can accent orchestral passages in a large concert hall. Play with a worship group? These maracas can add a rhythmic touch to your music that easily fills the space in worship settings. Anyone on stage, from singers to keys players, can grab these maracas when the moment calls for it.
How do I control the sound?
Just like a cymbal can pierce through the mix at full volume, so can these maracas.
For softer settings, it takes small movements to fill the room. You could even play one at a time, lightly tapping the bulb for accents.
To project in a concert hall or with a live salsa band, shake the maracas with your arms and wrists to allow the filling to move freely inside.
100% all-weather synthetic bulbs
Shells, bulbs, gourds—there are many names to describe the casing that houses the filling inside.
Traditionally made with rawhide, this part of the maraca is where all the sound is generated, but we tweaked the traditional design for a few important reasons.
Using synthetic bulbs in place of rawhide broadens the dynamic range so you can project more. It's also weather resistant and extraordinary durable.
The synthetic material is tough, crystal-clear sounding and will last a lifetime.
Solid wood curved handles
Comfort is key for long sets of music and dynamic control. We designed the handles to fit your hand just right so you can dial-in the right amount of volume for your situation.
The ergonomic curve also eliminates awkward fumbling to get a good hand position. These handles will give you a solid grip as soon as you pick up the maracas.
The solid wood is finished with a rich stain for a high-end, yet understated look.
Large size for any setting
Part of the reason these maracas project so well is their large size. The synthetic bulbs measure 3 1/4" wide x 6" to give the internal filling plenty of room to move around.
Inside is mostly empty space for good reason.
With full strokes, the filling has ample area to gain velocity before striking the inside of the shell, producing an articulate, sharp and classic maraca sound.
