14 best bass wah pedals

A bass wah pedal is a type of effects pedal used by bass guitarists to modify the tone and sound of their instrument. It is a popular tool for adding expression and dynamics to a bass guitar performance. Here are some key points about bass wah pedals:

  1. Function: A bass wah pedal is designed to create a sweeping, vocal-like sound by emphasizing certain frequencies while filtering out others. It achieves this effect by using a bandpass filter that can be controlled using a foot pedal.

  2. Expression: The primary purpose of a bass wah pedal is to allow the player to vary the pedal's position using their foot. This action alters the pedal's filter position, causing the frequency response of the bass signal to change dynamically, resulting in the classic "wah-wah" sound.

  3. Wah-Wah Effect: When the pedal is in the heel-down position, it typically emphasizes the bass frequencies, giving a deep and full sound. As the pedal is rocked forward (toe-down position), it shifts the emphasis towards the higher frequencies, creating a more pronounced and "wah" sound. The player can control the speed and depth of this effect to match the music's mood and style.

  4. Versatility: Bass wah pedals can be used in various musical genres, including rock, funk, jazz, and more. They are not limited to bass guitars and can also be used with other instruments, such as electric guitars and keyboards.

  5. Integration: Many bass wah pedals offer additional features such as built-in boost or distortion effects, allowing for a wider range of tonal possibilities. They can be incorporated into a pedalboard setup alongside other effects pedals.

  6. Notable Models: Some well-known bass wah pedal models include the Dunlop Cry Baby Bass Wah, the Morley Power Wah, and the Boss AW-3 Dynamic Wah.

  7. Usage Tips: Achieving the desired wah effect requires practice and finesse in controlling the pedal's movement with your foot.Bassists often experiment with different pedal movements and playing techniques to create unique sounds.

  8. Maintenance: Like other effects pedals, bass wah pedals require regular maintenance, such as cleaning the potentiometers and ensuring proper electrical connections, to keep them functioning optimally.

In summary, a bass wah pedal is a valuable tool for bass guitarists looking to add expressive and dynamic qualities to their music. It allows for the creation of the iconic "wah-wah" effect and can be a versatile addition to a musician's toolkit for crafting unique sounds.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this pedal run on a 9volt battery? Or is it AC adapter only
Answer: Well that might be due to the base being a little wider than the foot part, and the fact that it's slightly tapered from front to back. Who knows what's getting measured out there?!? So, the base of the thing is 3 1/2 inches in front and 3 inches at the back. The foot pedal part is 3 inches in front and 2 1/2 inches at the heel. Hope that helps!

User questions & answers

Question: I typically play a baritone guitar in b standard. would this be more ideal, or a traditional cry baby
Answer: This will work well for baritone and regular guitar. It has a different sound on guitar than other non-bass guitar wahs. I love how gnarly it sounds for guitar and I play a 7-String.
Question: Is the input also stereo as well as mono for bass? In other words can I use this for stereo synths and mono bass
Answer: I believe it only accepts instrument cable. So to answer your question, mono only.
Question: Where do you place this effect in your bass pedal signal chain
Answer: I place it at the beginning because I want my other pedal effects applied to the wah after the wah effect. But this is preference, not requirement. This link explains bass pedal order and why preference is important. http://smartbassguitar.com/how-to-set-up-a-pedal-board-for-bassists/#.V72WeakpDqA
Question: Can you use bass wah pedals on standard electric guitars
Answer: Could you? Yes. Should you? No.... The frequency range of this wah will not work well for the range of frequencies needed for guitar. There is a WIDE range of wah pedals out there made for guitar with lots of different flavors, so there really is no need to buy a Bass Wah to try and use with guitar.... Cry Baby

Based on 14 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The Geezer Butler Cry Baby Bass Wah is specially designed to complement Geezer’s iconic sound-massive low end power with a midrange that cuts through the mix. We took the aggressive Cry Baby 95Q Wah and modified its sweep so that, from the heel-down position, custom circuitry mixes in just the right amount of your dry signal.
