13 best intermediate flutes

Intermediate flutes are musical instruments designed for advancing players who have outgrown beginner flutes and are ready for a higher-quality instrument. These flutes are typically made with better materials and craftsmanship, offering improved tone, playability, and overall performance. Here are some key points about intermediate flutes:

  1. Materials:

    • Intermediate flutes are often crafted from higher-quality materials such as solid silver, sterling silver, or gold. These materials contribute to a richer and more resonant tone compared to the beginner flutes, which are usually made of nickel-silver or silver-plated brass.
    • The headjoint of an intermediate flute, in particular, may be made of a more precious material, as it significantly influences the flute's sound.
  2. Construction:

    • Intermediate flutes may have a more intricate and precise construction than beginner models. This includes better key mechanisms, improved soldering, and a higher level of craftsmanship.
    • Some intermediate flutes feature open-hole key designs, which allow for more advanced finger techniques and tonal possibilities. These open holes are typically equipped with plugs to accommodate players who are still developing their finger strength and precision.
  3. Tone and Sound Quality:

    • Intermediate flutes are known for their enhanced tonal qualities. They produce a warmer, more resonant, and expressive sound compared to beginner flutes.
    • The choice of materials, along with the design of the flute's embouchure hole and other components, contributes to the instrument's improved sound.
  4. Key Features:

    • Many intermediate flutes come with features such as offset G keys, which make it more comfortable for players with smaller hands.
    • B footjoints are common on intermediate flutes, which extend the flute's range by one additional note (low B).
  5. Price Range:

    • Intermediate flutes are positioned between beginner and professional models in terms of quality and price. They are more expensive than beginner flutes but generally more affordable than high-end professional flutes.
  6. Use in Advancing Studies:

    • These flutes are commonly used by students who are advancing in their flute studies and are preparing for more serious playing in school bands, orchestras, or private lessons.
    • Intermediate flutes are also popular among adult amateur musicians who want to invest in a higher-quality instrument for recreational playing or community music groups.
  7. Maintenance and Care:

    • Like all musical instruments, intermediate flutes require regular maintenance to keep them in optimal playing condition. Cleaning, oiling, and occasional servicing by a qualified technician are essential.
  8. Try Before You Buy:

    • When shopping for an intermediate flute, it's advisable to try several instruments and consult with a knowledgeable flute teacher or technician to find the best fit for your playing style and needs.

In summary, intermediate flutes are designed for advancing players who seek higher-quality instruments with improved tonal characteristics, materials, and craftsmanship compared to beginner models. These flutes are an important step for students and dedicated amateur musicians on their musical journey towards higher levels of proficiency and expression.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with a case
Answer: i also thought it didn't come with a case but to my surprise... it did, a beautiful one...i thought. it was packaged very well & the case even comes with a shoulder strap.
Question: Hello! Is the flute new or used? Make shipments to Mexico
Answer: Good day,Everything we sell is new.Unfortunately we can't ship to Mexico.Do you have an address in the United States we can ship to?Thanks.Beagle Music Online.
Question: Where is this flute made of
Answer: Good day, If the question is where is the flute made? Answer will be Indonesia. Like all other Yamaha products that are either beginner or intermediate level, they are made in China or Indonesia. Only professional lines are made in Japan. Anything else please advise, Beagle Music Online.
Question: Is this an authentic? Why is it half the price of authorized Yamaha dealers
Answer: I bought one and I'm still not sure. I saw a review on youtube with what appears to be the same flute that seems legitimate. I paid just about $500.00 from one of these Amazon merchants and my 4 star verified purchase review is posted. I'm happy with the purchase so far. The flute does have "pointed" rather than "y" key arms and seems quite well made. However I am not a technician or professional musician. I was surprised at the low price compared to "Sam Ash" and "Musicians Friend" pricing at about $1000.00. Authorized dealer carries a 5 years warranty but that doesn't cover pads & springs & corks so I took my chance. By the way after I made my purchase I saw "Flute Center of New York" which is an authorized dealer has the flute priced at $629.00. I might have purchased that one had I done more research and waited. I emailed the serial number to Yamaha and they responded that they don't verify unless purchased from an authorized dealer. I still would like to have the flute I received checked by a Yamaha authorized tech which I may do down the line when it needs maintenance. I would also like to compare the flute I received to a known Yamaha 222. Sorry I can't confirm for sure it's authenticity, Good luck.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the flute new
Answer: Yes I think so it's 14 mm
Question: what is the difference between student and intermediate model
Answer: I’m not certain what you mean by “standard size”. This chaser is for the 14mm x 1.25mm thread size/pitch. Automotive spark plugs come in 4 popular sizes. The easiest way to know is to measure your current spark plugs.
Question: Is this flute 17 closed holes
Answer: Probably, if it has standard 14mm plugs.
Question: Is this good for an intermediate level adult who wants to start playing again
Answer: I got this for a 2001 Ford E350 because I thought it was the next size up to re-thread it for a blown plug, but it just re-threads the thread you already have If you have cross threaded a plug I guess. I you have a blown plug though, you need to get one of these http://www.zoro.com/i/G1243094/?utm_source=Bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PLA Just make sure it's the correct kit...... I ended up getting one from Autozone to make sure I got the right one, but I'm sure you could get it on here as well? ... The only problem I had was the nut on the tap was too big to fit in the spark plug hole, weird?! but ground it down with a grinder until it fitted in the socket. re-cut the thread, then you put the new thread insert, supplied with the kit on the plug as stated on the instructions and touch wood, all is AOK so far after a few thousand miles...............Not even sure if any off that helped, but good luck.

User questions & answers

Question: F doesn't work. Key that's not supposed to close closes. Easy fix or send back
Answer: Very vague question. Bottom of what ? The flute or the case? To answer about either, I would say buy a new one.
Question: Does the 17 key flute silver glory flute come with a b foot please i need help i need a b foot flute or else ill wont be abke to continue band thanks
Answer: I don’t believe mine did.
Question: If i select the 17 open hole key silver flute will it come with a b foot joint im planing to order one
Answer: They are USA go to Lazarro web page on Google type in Lazarro instruments, and their site comes up. Made in the USA
Question: Your title says off set g and b foot, but also says c flute. the description does not mention the (off set g and b foot) what is the truth
Answer: As a pro, I would say, no. Since this question is from 3 years ago, my intention is to help others choosing flutes for beginner students. Most teachers profess that the Gemeinhardt is the best for beginners, but I disagree. While NOTHING is going to beat silver for sound quality, if you need something economical for a young beginner, I suggest a Bundy. The biggest hurdle a beginner has is resistance on the embouchure, and for the price, but without silver, Bundy is the best buy. I hope this helps others. Not everyone can afford (or even needs) a Pearl Cantabile, so I understand looking for a good product at a reasonable price.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the head made of pure silver
Answer: As far as I can tell they are in the same key and general tone. The YRF-21 is a lot cheaper. I can't really tell the difference in sound, but I don't have both of them together to do a comparison. My advice would be to get the YRF-21, because of the price difference. The Aulos seems to be better built, but they both seem virtually indestructible. I like the Aulos, but I would be hard pressed to tell the difference in sound between the two instruments.
Question: Made in japan
Answer: How to clean a flute: https://youtu.be/7wJiDbcw3Zs Also, you can purchase flute cleaning rods or flute pad saver rods online.. like this one, for example: https://www.amazon.com/American-Plating-361-Flute-Cleaning/dp/B003B03C06/ref=zg_bs_11969541_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=QTM3VB1YNEZ3XY9KDM5V
Question: Is the bag branded by Yamaha, does it say Yamaha
Answer: The Aulos Fife C-21 is easier to finger, easier to blow, and has better intonation than the Yamaha Fife YRF-21. In my opinion, this justifies the extra fifteen dollars in price. Fingering charts come with both instruments. If you contact the companies, they can probably supply you with them.

User questions & answers

Question: My daughter is required to play an wind instrument in starting in the 4th grade. Is this a good flute for her to grow into for band
Answer: The 500 series is considered their professional line. The basic flutes are the 200 series (ie, Yamaha 222, 282, etc) and the step up models are the 300 and 400 series (ie, Yamaha 382, 462, etc. ). That said, this price range overlaps heavily with other brands’ higher-level step-up models. So in terms of price point, it would be comparable to step-up/advanced intermediate models.
Question: l just got one, and the pieces are really hard to put together. I've never had that with a different flute. Is that how all these flutes are made
Answer: Yes, this model does have one. You can buy with or without, but if you buy from us, just message us to be sure we send the one with the c# trill. We keep both models in stock all the time.
Question: Does the end joint have 2 keys or 3 keys? Thanks
Answer: All 200s are made in Indonesia
Question: It the flute real
Answer: No, all 200, 300, and 400 model flutes are made in Japan - all of them, no matter the American version or the international versions. You have to buy a 500 series or higher for the flute to be made in Japan. That said, these are very high quality instruments.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the difference beween this model and the 362H
Answer: The Headjoint is sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure. Technically, "pure silver" refers to purity levels above 99%, but no flutes in this price point ever will have that level of purity - they tend to sell for around $18,000. Intermediate level flutes tend to be either sterling silver, like this one, or "solid silver". Solid silver, 90% pure, is actually a little LESS pure than sterling. Hope that helps!
Question: does the price include the flute case? If yes, could you provide me its features? Thanks
Answer: No, all 200, 300, and 400 model flutes are made in Japan - all of them, no matter the American version or the international versions. You have to buy a 500 series or higher for the flute to be made in Japan. That said, these are very high quality instruments.
Question: Is there a huge difference between this and the 361? (I’m a non-flute player
Answer: The outer case does have a tag that says “Yamaha”.
Question: Does this flute have a warranty? Manufacturer or otherwise? Thanks
Answer: It is difficult to play c-sharp above low c on both instruments because you have to half-finger the hole just so. Try using the edge of the fingernail on your little finger.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this flute have a B foot joint
Answer: I don't see one on mine
Question: What is the head joint and body made of? Is it solid silver, silver plated etc. ? Is the lip plate gold or solid silver
Answer: I known exactly what you are asking. I wondered that myself. It is actually an open hole flute with the clear plugs in the holes that you can remove.
Question: Is this made in Japan
Answer: Yes, this flute is a a great choice for your daughter. It is an intermediate flute with the open holes, though, which are more difficult to close with small fingers. What I would suggest is to keep the silicone inserts in the holes for a couple of years until her fingers grow and she becomes more proficient. Then, have her gradually practice with the open holes. Her instructor will give guidance as to when she will be ready to use the open holes. I had bought a cheap beginner closed hole flute about 20 years ago from a pawn shop. I was very happy to find this new flute at Amazon.com which was affordable yet a step up from what I had been using. The difference in sound quality is unbelievable. This open hole flute has a clear crisp sound. My old flute was more brash and raspy if that makes any sense. This is a great flute that will take your daughter through high school. If she wants to advance after that to a more expensive and professional flute, then they cost about $1200.00 or more like for a Gemeinhardt. I play in church and did not want to spend that much money, although I am sure they are well worth the cost. I am very satisfied with this instrument. The price on the Glory flute sure beats trying to rent a flute year after year. And if your daughter decides that she doesn't like to play the flute, then you only have about $150 tied up in it and you can turn around and sell it for close to that amount because it is an intermediate open hole flute which is not easy to come by used. I wish you much success. I love to play duets with other flute players. I have also played a duet with my son as he played the piano. It was wonderful to be able to share that time with family. I know I have been long winded, but I wanted you to be encouraged as your daughter begins such an exciting time in her life. Sincerely, Aimee
Question: What is the head joint and body made of? Is it solid silver, silver plated etc. ? Is the lip plate gold or solid silver
Answer: The flute I bought for my daughter seemed hard for me to put together, but my daughter has no problems assembling it and doesn't have an issue with that. Try lubricating it.

User questions & answers

Question: do you include the case stand and cleaning kit
Answer: The azumi 2 has a headjoint that is sterling silver (92.5% pure). This is more pure than “solid silver” which usually means anything higher than 90%. Azumi does not offer a gold lip plate option, and all models of azumi have a sterling silver lip plate and riser.
