14 best volume pedal
A volume pedal is a musical instrument accessory that is commonly used with electric guitars and other electric instruments. It falls under the category of single effects within the realm of electric guitar effects, which are often employed to shape and manipulate the sound of the guitar. Here's what you need to know about volume pedals:
Function: A volume pedal is designed to control the volume of the instrument it is connected to. Guitarists use it to smoothly adjust the volume level while playing, without the need to reach for the guitar's volume knob or make adjustments on an amplifier. This allows for dynamic and expressive control over the instrument's loudness during a performance.
Design and Operation: Volume pedals typically have a foot-operated pedal that can be rocked forward (to increase volume) or backward (to decrease volume). The pedal is connected to a potentiometer inside the pedal enclosure, which adjusts the electrical resistance and, consequently, the volume of the signal passing through it.
Placement in the Signal Chain: Volume pedals are usually placed in the signal chain after the guitar and before any effects pedals or the amplifier. This positioning allows for consistent control over the overall volume of the signal, regardless of the effects applied to it.
Expression and Dynamics: Volume pedals are valuable for guitarists seeking to add dynamics and expression to their playing. By gently rocking the pedal, players can achieve swells, fades, and gradual changes in volume that add depth and emotion to their music.
Wah Filter: Some volume pedals, known as "wah volume" pedals, combine the functionality of a volume pedal with a wah-wah filter effect. This allows guitarists to create a "wah" sound by rocking the pedal forward and backward while also controlling the volume. This combination of effects can produce unique and expressive tones.
Use in Different Musical Styles: Volume pedals are versatile and find applications in various musical genres. They are commonly used in rock, blues, country, and ambient music to create lush soundscapes and control the intensity of solos.
Build and Connectivity: Volume pedals are available in various designs, including passive and active models. Passive pedals do not require external power, while active ones often include built-in buffer circuits and may need a power source. They typically have input and output jacks for connecting the instrument and amplifier or other effects pedals.
In summary, a volume pedal is an essential accessory for guitarists and other electric instrument players, allowing them to control their instrument's volume dynamically and expressively. It is a versatile tool that can shape the overall sound and add depth to a performance, making it a valuable addition to many musical setups.

The design and development of the Ernie Ball pedals has been a team effort of guitar players and craftspersons within our company. Pedal bodies are an aluminum extrusion rather than a casting resulting in greater strength, uniformity, and smoother surfaces. Clear anodized grain finish insures lasting beauty. Overall dimensions: 4" W x 11" L x 2.5" H. The main pivot shaft is of centerless ground 1/2' diameter stainless steel, precision seated though nylon bushings at both ends. The large center shaft diameter, in addition the strength factor, creates a broader stress bearing surface. Our bodies and shafts are designed to give the player an indefinite service life! Deck mat of non-slip material is impervious to oil, alcohol, and most things you might spill on it. Quick disconnect wiring harness allows changing the pot without soldering. Tough long lasting Kevlar cable transmits pedal travel to the controls and is attached by stainless steel springs. This drive design results in smooth and quiet operation qualities lacking in gear driven models. Cycle tests are made on every pedal to insure perfect operation prior to packaging.
- Jr size to better fit on pedal boards
- Mono volume control
- Taper switch for two distinctive swell rates
- For passive signal in
User questions & answers
Question: | I thought the "Jr" model meant it was small(er). Wow, this thing is big, what am I missing? Do they make anything smaller |
Answer: | Hello there, not sure what is happening with this pedal. I use this model and do not have that issue. Have you tried adjusting the level to a wider signal? |
Question: | Does the tuner output work full time or only when the pedal is heel down |
Answer: | This pedal does not have a on/off switch so the signal is never interrupted, it does not have to be true bypass. It’s a great pedal. |
Question: | Does this pedal need a battery and/or power supply |
Answer: | Yes , It certainly does in my experience with it! I have alll of my overdrive pedals placed before this, and the guitar cranked up, and you have the full overdrive that you desire at any volume, with all the tone intact! Active volume pedal is the way to go. I have my delay pedals placed after this volume pedal, and everything sounds great! Love it! |
Question: | What is the difference between the E.BALL 6180 JR and the 6181 JR? Is one more versatile |
Answer: | Since the MVP is an active pedal with a buffer, it needs to be powered. According to their webpage, the current draw is less than 3 mA. |

Control your volume and FX parameters without crowding your pedalboard. Saving space doesn't mean skimping on durability or functionality-the DVP4 Mini Volume (X) Pedal does everything that the larger DVP3 does at half the size, and it's just as solidly built with a lightweight aluminum chassis, aggressive non-slip tread, and our patented Low Friction Band-Drive for a smooth range of motion and consistent, reliable performance. For maximum comfort and precision, the DVP4's rocker tension is fully adjustable. User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this for guitar |
Answer: | YES you can use it for a guitar if you have the right multi effects pedal. I just bought a Zoom G3 and it works all the expression pedal effects not just the volume. I've used it with the Zoom G1, G1N and the A2 pedals and it always worked. Just plug it into the Control In input jack. |
Question: | can this make swells on the guitar |
Answer: | The Yamaha FC7 Control Pedal can NOT be used directly inline with a guitar. However, the pedal may be compatible with some amplifiers/effects units if they have a "Controller" or "Expression" input. |
Question: | Used or new plz |
Answer: | Always new when it comes to electronics. |
Question: | Will this work as an expression pedal with the Line 6 M13? Is a "volume pedal" the same thing as an "expression pedal |
Answer: | According to Line 6 support, NO, this is not compatible. https://line6.com/supportarchivenew/thread/19057/ As mentioned by Harry De Gray Cat, "volume pedal" is usually used to refer to an "audio attenuation" pedal, that you'd use in-line between an instrument and the amp, just like most guitar pedals. "Expression pedal" is a control input into a device (like the Line 6 M13) to control some parameter, the default usually being volume but it could also control the frequency of a filter sweep, like a wah pedal, or the delay on an echo effect. So, it's more versatile, but it needs to plug into some device that implements the effect; it's just a controller. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is there a reason it cuts off my swells at a certain spot on the pedal? very unimpressed with this. if this is happening I might as well not use it |
Answer: | This device is a line level volume control. It's likely no use to you if the amp doesn't have an fx send and return. |
Question: | Is this true bypass |
Answer: | It’s a loop attenuator. Amp got a loop? |
Question: | A lot of people are saying it is buffered does that mean it will preserve my guitar tone |
Answer: | It wore out a 250K pot in less than a year. I'd recommend a more robust unit if it is to be frequently used on the job. I'm hard on a volume pedal as I use it to fade in and out my drum unit. |
Question: | Do you have to power this pedal or can it be used without |
Answer: | This pedal comes with nothing extra....it worked fine for a few weeks at home when trying it out but, I used this pedal once at a gig for my guitar and it never worked again. So I don't recommend buying it...spend more to get more. |

Question: | Does this work with a Zoom G3n |
Answer: | I believe thats the smallest one in the line. |
Question: | fade one input between two separate outputs |
Answer: | The tuner output works full time. |
Question: | what are the actual dimensions on this pedal? The ad lists it as 10 x 10 x |
Answer: | No; since it's a passive volume pedal, it requires no power supply. |
Question: | Would you recomment high impedance or low impedance if using in front of analog pedals and tube amp |
Answer: | Hi there - The 6180 is for PASSIVE guitars and basses. The 6181 is for ACTIVE instruments. The potentiometer's value inside the pedals differs depending on what type of instrument you have. If you are using anything with active electronics (powered by a battery) then you need to use the 6181. If you have a normal guitar with standard magnetic pickups, then you need the 6180. -Andy |

Product features
Morley 2020 Volume Plus
The 2020 Volume Plus is the Ultimate Volume pedal. Say goodbye to worn out rope and scratchy pots... Morley's Optical circuitry uses light to measure the travel so it will never wear down. It's Audio Taper is smooth and forgiving and perfect for Violin or Lap Steel Guitar type swells. It's also one of the few Volume pedals to offer a Minimum Volume Control that can perform a variety of functions such setting your Lead and Rhythm Volumes, Tremolo pedal emulation and sound design.
Smooth Audio Taper
What's the difference between an Audio and Linear Taper? A Linear Taper travels in a straight line while an Audio Taper travels in a logarithmic fashion. The advantage of an Audio Taper is that it's more natural sounding to the human ear than a Linear Taper, and it's more forgiving for Violin and Lap Steel Guitar type swells.
Minimum Volume Control
The Volume Plus is one of the few pedals to offer a Minimum Volume Control. It can be used for a variety of functions including setting your Rhythm and Lead Volume, Variable Fuzz/Distortion Control, emulating a Tremolo style effect, and when it's dialed into it's lowest setting can emulate a more Linear style Taper.
Glow-in-the-Dark Details
Never lose your pedal on a dark stage. Morley's Pedal-Glow treadle rubber makes sure you know where your pedal is located. The Morley toe-end sticker also glows in the dark.
