14 best expression pedals

Expression pedals are essential components in the world of electric guitar effects and amplification. They are versatile foot-operated controllers that allow guitarists and other musicians to manipulate various parameters of their effects pedals, such as wah-wah filters, volume, or modulation effects, in real-time. Here's what you need to know about expression pedals:

  1. Functionality: Expression pedals are designed to alter specific parameters of effects pedals or amplifiers gradually. Instead of preset adjustments, they offer continuous control over parameters like frequency sweep (wah-wah), volume, delay feedback, modulation depth, and more.

  2. Wah Filter Control: One of the most well-known applications of expression pedals is controlling wah-wah filters. When connected to a wah-wah pedal, the expression pedal lets the guitarist manipulate the filter's frequency sweep, creating the signature "wah" sound often heard in funk and rock music.

  3. Volume Control: Expression pedals can also be used to control the volume of the guitar signal. This is particularly useful for creating swells and fades in a live performance or for transitioning between clean and distorted tones.

  4. Modulation Effects: Many modulation effects like tremolo, chorus, or flanger can be controlled using an expression pedal. Musicians can adjust the depth, speed, or other parameters of these effects dynamically.

  5. Compatibility: Expression pedals are compatible with a wide range of effects pedals and amplifiers that have an expression pedal input. This allows musicians to use a single expression pedal with multiple devices, enhancing their versatility.

  6. Construction: Expression pedals are typically built as robust and durable units, designed to withstand the rigors of live performances and studio use. They feature a foot-controlled rocking or sliding mechanism that allows for precise parameter adjustments.

  7. Potentiometer Type: Some expression pedals use a traditional potentiometer, while others use optical sensors for increased durability and precision.

  8. Calibration: Many expression pedals offer calibration options, allowing musicians to set the minimum and maximum values for the controlled parameter. This ensures that the pedal responds precisely to the player's foot movement.

  9. Expression Pedal Inputs: Most effects pedals and amplifiers designed to work with expression pedals have a dedicated input jack. The expression pedal is connected to this jack using a standard 1/4-inch TRS (tip-ring-sleeve) cable.

  10. Musical Applications: Expression pedals are widely used in various musical genres, including rock, blues, funk, and experimental music. They offer musicians a means of adding expressive and dynamic elements to their performances.

Expression pedals are an essential tool for guitarists and other instrumentalists looking to add depth, dynamics, and creativity to their music. They enable real-time control over effects parameters, allowing for unique and expressive performances.

User questions & answers

Question: H9 Max compatible or no
Answer: I am not sure about the H9. This pedal works with every device I have tried it on though. I bought two.
Question: Does anyone know if this pedal will work with roland effects pedals such as the re-20 space echo
Answer: For sure, since you apply a shunt over the resistor as I described on my review. By the way, actually I am using a EX-P pedal with a boss RE-20! :o)
Question: It can be used with the blueboard of ik multimedia
Answer: Yes it can be used with the blue board, you can assign it to any parameter or to the master volume of the amp. the problem is that it does not allow you to set the pedal for the master volume of the app, so you have to make a preset with the routing the the master volume of an amp and create all the presets based on that. or else you will have to assigne it to every preset.
Question: What is the function of the 2 position switch (M-Audio - Other) on the bottom
Answer: Not all expression pedal circuits are the same in the devices that you would control with this pedal. So M-Audio gave you a switch that will alter the way the pedal's circuit works. If you are connecting the pedal to an M-Audio device, then you would want the switch in the M-Audio position. In that position, the pedal's circuitry is a match for M-Audio devices. If you are connecting the pedal to a different manufacturer's device, then you may find that the pedal will work better in the Other position. But maybe not. You should try both positions when using the pedal with a device from a manufacturer other than M-Audio. You may find that one position works better than the other

User questions & answers

Question: I have an ep 2, it seems very weak when used with a dsi pro 2. is this pedal any different as far as the internal circuitry
Answer: The EP-3 uses the same specs for the potentiometer, just better construction from what I've gathered. The EP-2 should not have a lower output when in full volume position.
Question: Will this work with zoom b
Answer: I used it with the Zoom G3 which is the guitar equivalent. I don't see why it wouldn't work with the b3 if you can use an expression pedal with it.
Question: Can this pedal be used with an iPad and if so, do I need to also run it through a pedal board
Answer: Unless you have an interface for the iPad with a quarter inch expression pedal input then you cannot. This is mainly made for pedals (like moogs own moogerfooger and minifooger series) to control filter, q, wah and what not. It also works with multi effects, Kemper and Fractals. However! If you get something like this it should work exactly like you want it to :) http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BIPL9JW/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1436635582&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX200_QL40&keywords=irig+blueboard&dpPl=1&dpID=31JAkRaDPqL&ref=plSrch
Question: Has anyone tried this with a Strymon product such as Mobius
Answer: This is one Strymon recommends on the mobius FAQ page. They also listed Roland EV-5 and Mission Engineering EP-1. I just bought it for my mobius so I don't know from my experience if it works.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this for guitar
Answer: YES you can use it for a guitar if you have the right multi effects pedal. I just bought a Zoom G3 and it works all the expression pedal effects not just the volume. I've used it with the Zoom G1, G1N and the A2 pedals and it always worked. Just plug it into the Control In input jack.
Question: can this make swells on the guitar
Answer: The Yamaha FC7 Control Pedal can NOT be used directly inline with a guitar. However, the pedal may be compatible with some amplifiers/effects units if they have a "Controller" or "Expression" input.
Question: Used or new plz
Answer: Always new when it comes to electronics.
Question: Will this work as an expression pedal with the Line 6 M13? Is a "volume pedal" the same thing as an "expression pedal
Answer: According to Line 6 support, NO, this is not compatible. https://line6.com/supportarchivenew/thread/19057/ As mentioned by Harry De Gray Cat, "volume pedal" is usually used to refer to an "audio attenuation" pedal, that you'd use in-line between an instrument and the amp, just like most guitar pedals. "Expression pedal" is a control input into a device (like the Line 6 M13) to control some parameter, the default usually being volume but it could also control the frequency of a filter sweep, like a wah pedal, or the delay on an echo effect. So, it's more versatile, but it needs to plug into some device that implements the effect; it's just a controller.

User questions & answers

Question: I'm looking to get this with the hx stomp. can this be used as a volume pedal until you click on the wah (or assigned effect), then back to volume
Answer: Can’t say as I don’t have the HX Stomp but the HELIX Floor and most parameters can be assigned to the pedal. So if HX Stomp has the same programming for its base configuration it should work exactly the same way.
Question: Is this pedal can also be use in the M13? cause i need a built in switch tho
Answer: I use it with HX stomp. Does the M 13 have a TRS 1/4 inch out? If so, you need a TRS 1/4 male into two 1/4 inch TS male plugs and it should work.
Question: Is one jack for the toe switch, and the other for expression
Answer: No. The pedal can act as Exp1 and Exp2. The toe switch will toggle which one is active.
Question: Does it work with the Helix Lt
Answer: It works great with the Helix lt. Be sure to turn off any presets already assigned to that expression usually a volume pedal. It was confusing at first.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this pedal noisy (signal wise) ? does it "suck" tone out of your guitar
Answer: Signal pass through was fine, but the wah was very noisy with way too extreme of a sweep. I couldn’t make it work for my sound. Would have been fine for a volume only pedal.
Question: How do you switch controls
Answer: A switch on the side for volume or wah
Question: include adapter
Answer: NO
Question: Does it work well for Martin acoustic guitar going through a PA
Answer: I plug my bass guitar into it and a bass amp. It does a great job. No noise, very clean sound.
