12 best phaser pedals

Phaser pedals are popular guitar effects pedals used by electric guitarists to add a unique and swirling sound modulation to their playing. These pedals are categorized under the "Modulation" category of guitar effects and are commonly used in various musical genres, from rock and metal to funk and psychedelic music. Here's what you need to know about phaser pedals:

  1. Basic Functionality: Phaser pedals alter the phase of a guitar's audio signal by splitting it into two identical signals, shifting one signal's phase, and then mixing them back together. This phase-shifting creates a sweeping, swirling sound that is often described as "phasing" or "swooshing."

  2. Tone Control: Many phaser pedals come equipped with tone control knobs that allow guitarists to adjust the character of the phasing effect. These controls can modify the depth, speed, and resonance of the phase shift, giving you a wide range of tonal options.

  3. Speed and Depth Control: Phaser pedals typically have knobs for controlling the speed and depth of the phase modulation. Speed determines how quickly the phase shifts, while depth controls the intensity or range of the phase effect.

  4. Stages: Phaser pedals may have different numbers of stages, which can affect the complexity and depth of the phase effect. Common options include 4, 6, 8, or 12 stages, with more stages generally creating a more pronounced and sweeping phaser sound.

  5. Feedback and Resonance: Some phaser pedals include controls for feedback or resonance, which can add resonance peaks or accentuate certain frequencies in the phase-shifted signal, creating unique and expressive tones.

  6. True Bypass: Many modern phaser pedals feature true bypass switching, which allows you to engage or disengage the effect without coloring your guitar's tone when the pedal is not in use.

  7. Use in Music Styles: Phaser pedals are versatile and can be used in a wide range of musical styles. They are often used to create psychedelic sounds, add movement to clean guitar tones, or enhance the intensity of distorted and overdriven guitar solos.

  8. Notable Phaser Pedals: Some well-known phaser pedals include the MXR Phase 90, Electro-Harmonix Small Stone, and Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter, among others. Each of these pedals offers its own unique tonal characteristics and features.

  9. Chain Placement: Phaser pedals can be placed anywhere in your guitar signal chain, depending on your preference.Common placements include before or after distortion/overdrive pedals, but experimentation can yield interesting results.

  10. Vintage vs. Modern: Vintage phaser pedals, like the MXR Phase 90, are known for their classic sound and simplicity. Modern phaser pedals often offer additional features and a broader range of tones.

Phaser pedals are an excellent addition to a guitarist's effects arsenal, providing a wide range of tonal possibilities and creative opportunities. Experimentation with different settings and combinations with other effects pedals can lead to unique and captivating sounds for your music.

MXR M290 Phase 95 Mini Guitar Effects Pedal

Based on 179 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Mxr knows Phases. The phase 90’s compact size, superior construction, and refined sound put MXR on the map, and it set the standard by which all Other Phases are judged. Two years later, MXR released the phase 45-a mellower version of the effect favored for its ability to easily blend into a band's mix. Now, you can get both iconic circuits in a single pedal while tightening up your pedalboard at the same time. The phase 95 combines the phase 45 and phase 90 circuits in a Mini housing with about half the footprint of a standard MXR pedal. The 45/90 Switch toggles between the phase 45 mode’s subtle two-stage phasing and the phase 90 mode’s more pronounced four-stage phasing, while the script switch toggles between two phasing styles. The phase 95 is set to modern style phasing by default, which relies on feedback to create light harmonic distortion and gives the effect A more accentuated Swoosh. Engaging the script switch removes feedback for a Lusher, more subdued sound with higher headroom and greater clarity. The familiar speed control sets the rate of the effect. The phase 95 may be small, but it’s full of rich phase tones, and it’ll take a beating on the road.

  • Combines mixer's most iconic phase circuits in a single mini housing
  • About half the footprint of a standard mxr pedal
  • 45/90 Switch toggles between phase 45 and phase 90 circuits
  • Script removes feedback for a subtler vintage sound
  • Does not include an adapter.
  • Script switch toggles between modern and vintage style phasing

User questions & answers

Question: Can i chose either 90 or 45 via switch or button or does this pedal stay somewhere between them
Answer: Yes
Question: What are the dimensions of this pedal
Answer: Yes
Question: Is it analog or digital
Answer: Not sure why yours don’t have one. But If it’s a single supply designed specifically for pedals or a multi supply(like voodoo labs) it should work UNLESS it’s a special supply with “reverse polarity”(the little diagram would have the positive plus sign pointed to the middle dot and the negative sign circling the dot). Some pedals(not this one) require reverse polarity.
Question: Is this pedal actually true bypass? With the pedal "off" and it's 9v power unplugged, will the guitar signal still continue to the amp? Thanks
Answer: Cuts thru nicely for me. I play thru large cabinet and fighting the low end sometimes comes in handy. Also if your stuck playing house system you have control of your sound.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it work w/amplified harmonica
Answer: I have not used it with a microphone and harmonica. But I do know from an electronic standpoint, it should work, because it will take an input signal like a microphone and process and change the signal accordingly............So long as the signal is strong enough at the input. Try it alone or with a preamp.
Question: Is this pedal analog or digital
Answer: It's a analog compressor pedal.
Question: How is the tracking on this pedal? Is it glitchy in any way
Answer: Very good.
Question: What kind of adapter? Is the tip negative
Answer: I don’t have this particular VSN pedal. However I have a VSN Flanger and it requires a negative tip 9 volt adapter. Hope this is helpful.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it work with a power supply or battery only
Answer: I have never actually timed the battery, but I play 2-3 hrs. a day for a couple of days and then recharge to make sure it's ready to go the next time I need it.
Question: does this sound more like van halum or ozzy
Answer: As our marketing team's research, one transmitter matched 6 receiver at the same frequency at the same time is no problem, no interference, I think 6 is far enough for a user.
Question: How does this compare with the mxr micro flanger
Answer: If the red light flashes after you switch on the transmitter or the receiver, it indicates low battery, please charge it in time with the USB cable. When fully charged, the green light flashes.
Question: Hi , is this particular phase 90 ( M 101 ) true bypass
Answer: It is compatible with regular Boss pedals. Not personally knowing the connectivity of the GT-18, I can 't say for sure.

JOYO Vintage Phase Effect Pedal

JF-06 Vintage Phase effect pedal is a modern replica that made Eddie Van Halen's sound! The dive bombs and swirling buzz of his custom electric guitars, ran through those high-gain amps cranked to 11 just wouldn't have been the same without a Phaser on select tunes. Probably one of the best, most musical effects a lead guitar can employ for sound creation. There are probably still new tones to be achieved.

Only one simple control knob, marked "Speed"– this controls the rate at which the phaser cycles its pulses. The thing can go from underwater to subtle beauty and depth in a matter of a 1/16 note.

Capable of going from a very subtle chorus like tone when only slightly turned up to an almost tremolo like effect when turned fully up giving the Vintage Phase more of a 'script' tone than a 'block' tone. The one knob control makes it super easy to get your perfect phase tone!

User questions & answers

Question: upon opening my vintage phase, it doesn't work. Anyone have experience fixing them? haha...just curious if anyone else had this
Answer: Jonathon, I have been very impressed with all six Joyo pedals I have ordered (distortions, flanger and phase). I have also been able to succesfully mod one of the distortion pedals. Have you opened the pedal up to check for anything obvious like loose wires etc.? It may be easier to just send it back for a replacement if it didn't work right out of the box...that would be my call. Hope this helps.V/rDoug
Question: Anyone know how many milliamps this pedal uses
Answer: Not sure but for the price it a good pedal
Question: What is included with the product
Answer: it comes in a box....nothing else......sounds as sweet as an MXR phase 90.....
Question: Can this be used in an effects loop or must it run in front of an amp
Answer: Personally, I use mine in my effects loop. You can run it either way though. I have a Peavey 5150 and this is the first thing in my loop followed by chorus, delay, and reverb.

User questions & answers

Question: Do the depth and rate work on all the settings
Answer: The aux in jack is stereo and gets recorded, so yes. That said, the NUX Loop Core has stereo guitar inputs, so you could just put a stereo effects pedal in that way, too.
Question: Hi. It has Wah mode
Answer: I don't know of any, but the manual is fairly complete and it behaves (more or less) like the Boss RC-3.
Question: Can the tremolo pan from left to right
Answer: Yes, it can definitely do that. Only issue I see is that you’d have to unplug each instrument then plug the next one in. Or use a small mixer or something on the input.
Question: I have a power supply that takes eight 9V 100ma pedals. Can I just plug into one of them? i heard it works fine
Answer: It is the one issue that could be improved on this unit. The tap tempo on mine does work but is very finicky to say the least. Sometimes I’ll get the tempo I want but most of the time it kind of hit and miss. I use the manual temp control most of the time. That said, overall I really like this pedal.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this A/C power only or is there a battery option
Answer: You must use A/C power. Just about every 'mini' pedal out there is this way because a 9v is physically too large to fit inside the pedal. But the upside is that you can fit more effects on your pedal board this way.
Question: Is the included power adapter a third party adapter or the one that's supposed to come from MXR for this specific unit
Answer: MXR provides an adapter in the factory box. This vendor lost my shipment and had to credit my account with a refund. I subsequently ordered it direct from amazon for $10 less, although without the patch cables and (un-needed) power adapter. By the way, this an amazing sounding pedal!
Question: Is the 10´PigHog cable straight/right angle or double straight angle
Answer: The one i got was double straight
