13 best metal pedal

A metal pedal, in the context of electric guitar effects, refers to a type of stompbox or pedal that is specifically designed to produce heavy distortion or overdrive tones, often associated with metal and hard rock music genres. These pedals are popular among guitarists seeking a saturated and aggressive sound. Here's what you need to know about metal pedals:

  1. Purpose: Metal pedals are used to alter the guitar's signal and create a distorted or overdriven sound. They are particularly favored by guitarists in metal and hard rock bands because of their ability to produce high-gain, saturated tones.

  2. Tone Characteristics:

    • High Gain: Metal pedals are known for their high gain capabilities, allowing for extreme levels of distortion.
    • Sustain: They often provide extended sustain, which means the notes played will ring out for a longer duration, adding to the intensity of the sound.
    • Tightness: Many metal pedals offer a tight and focused distortion, which is essential for articulating fast and heavy guitar riffs.
    • Clarity: Despite the high gain, modern metal pedals aim to maintain clarity in the tone, ensuring that individual notes and chords remain distinguishable.
  3. Controls: Metal pedals typically feature a range of control knobs that allow guitarists to fine-tune their sound:

    • Gain: Adjusts the amount of distortion or overdrive.
    • Tone: Alters the tonal characteristics, allowing for bright or dark tones.
    • Level: Sets the output volume of the pedal.
  4. Variety: There are many different metal pedals available from various manufacturers, each with its own unique characteristics. Some popular metal pedal models include the Boss Metal Zone, Pro Co Rat, and the MXR Fullbore Metal.

  5. Placement: Metal pedals are usually placed in the signal chain between the guitar and the amplifier. They can be activated or deactivated by stomping on the pedal, making them easy to use during live performances.

  6. Compatibility: Metal pedals are compatible with a wide range of amplifiers and guitars, making them versatile additions to a guitarist's setup.

  7. Stacking: Many guitarists use multiple effects pedals in combination. It's common to stack a metal pedal with other effects like delay, reverb, or wah-wah to create complex and unique tones.

  8. Subgenres: While metal pedals are often associated with genres like heavy metal and hard rock, they are also used in various subgenres of metal, such as thrash metal, death metal, and progressive metal, where different levels of distortion and tonal characteristics are desired.

In summary, a metal pedal is an essential tool for electric guitarists looking to achieve heavy distortion and overdrive tones, particularly in genres like metal and hard rock. These pedals offer a wide range of tonal possibilities and are a key component in shaping the aggressive and saturated sound associated with these musical styles.

User questions & answers

Question: Do you need a specific wattage amp for this to work
Answer: Hello, this is a great pedal for playing metal. I had mine connected to a Marshall 30CFX with the amp on the clean channel and it sounded great. I play a lot of Black Sabbath, Metallica, and AC/DC. I had the MT-2 and the DS-1 side by side, the DS-1 didn`t even compare so I sold it. I just found the MT-2 to be way more flexible to the point of where I almost bought another one so I could have two side by side. I liked it that much. I thought the gain and distortion on this pedal were very good. You can play anything with this pedal. I also have the Orange Micro Terror and the Dark Terror and I am using a 60 watt Mesa Boogie cabinet. The dark Terror is a high gain amp that needs no pedal and the Micro Terror can take the MT-2, but I prefer without. The Micro Terror is a great rock amp by itself, trust me. I don`t know what you have for equipment, but I wouldn`t use the MT-2 with a tube amp, you would be defeating the purpose of the tubes, solid state pedals and tube amps generally don`t mix well, but that`s just my opinion. I would go to your local guitar shop and try the pedal out on a variety of settings, with different amps to see if you like it or not because it`s about what you like and not what other people think you should have for equipment. Everybody has to find their own sound. Anyways, I hoped this helped and gave you some things to think about before making your purchase, good luck and have fun.
Question: It matters not but is this pedal plastic or metal casing
Answer: No, Boss pedals are never true bypass. They are buffered. Always have been, always will be.
Question: Will this work on a bass guitar/bass amp? I'm just playing for fun, I want to do Metallica's Pulling Teeth Anasthesia. Thanks
Answer: This is question is probably from somebody trying to be a smartarse, but anyway. Playing guitar in church is like playing guitar anywhere else. You try and get the best sound for the style of music and the situation you find yourself in. Find somebody who already in worship bands and ask their advice. Given that modern worship music covers a broad range of styles it could well be appropriate to use this in some situations, it depends on the congregation as well, if it's youth full on in-your-face sounds would be fine. It's all about sensitivity.
Question: Can you insert batteries
Answer: Hey! We recommend finishing the bottle within 2 years after breaking the seal.
Question: Can I get a Zeppelin / sabbath sound out of this
Answer: Hey Bryan.. I have used it on my matte finish car and believe me you it's useless, completely money making scam. Unfortunately I did not find any good polish for matte color.
Question: Would this be a good pedal for 80's hair metal/rock bands like Warrant orTesla type of sound or would a regular Distortion pedal work just as well
Answer: The bad reviews are from people using the product incorrectly or on a finish that would not be considered a standard matte finish clear coat. This is NOT applied like standard wax or ceramic coating.. etc. I also have not tried this on vinyl wrap either.. that may be an issue. On my BMW with factory Matte clear, this stuff works wonders. it sat in the rain for 3 days and looked almost perfect afterward. Also the Matte spray detailer makes applying this stuff many times easier and gives you a better result.
Question: Is this pedal True Bypass? Thanks
Answer: I have a flat black finish and this product did the same thing, it stained it with white haze so bad. What I did was just washed the car again and clay the crap out of it. It worked for me. The stain is gone. Will never use this crap again. But I don't know if clay bar will work on vinyl. Goodluck
Question: would this be a good option when playing guitar at a somber worship service
Answer: Yes I apply regular over ceramic coating.

User questions & answers

Question: Weird question time: I'm about 135lbs, and a bit over-enthusiastic. If I jump about 2 feet in the air and land on this pedal, will it survive
Answer: Absolutely! You could run it over with a car. A buddy of mine dropped his phone on one and it shattered the screen!
Question: Where is this pedal made
Answer: Although alot of people instantly assume China that's not true for Boss.... Boss pedals were made in Japan up until, I dunno. Google it. But now they are made in Taiwan. The real expensive Boss stuff is sometimes still made in Japan.
Question: Im new to pedals and would like to know if this comes by itself, if it does what cables do i need
Answer: You'll just need one guitar cable from your guitar to the pedal, and a second guitar cable from the pedal to your amp. The pedal runs on a 9v battery, which is included.
Question: some reviews say this ships with no power adapter. is this true? you have to find one and buy it separately
Answer: I haven't seen this be the norm. If the pedal is unable to have a 9v battery, I have seen them include a power supply.

DS-1 Distortion Pedal

The DS-1 Distortion is a true icon in the world of guitar effects. Introduced in 1978, BOSS’s first distortion pedal defined a bold new sound, delivering hard-edged attack and smooth sustain that’s been a staple of players for generations. The DS-1 is the top-selling BOSS compact pedal ever, and its original, unchanged design continues to inspire the creation of great music everywhere. The classic DS-1 tone is behind the signature sounds of numerous rock legends, and is ready to fuel your own signature sound today.

Genre-Defining Distortion

Before the DS-1, most distortion pedals produced harsh, buzzy tones and muddy sound at high gain settings. In 1978, BOSS engineers changed all that by developing a unique distortion circuit for the DS-1 that produces tight, hard-edged gain with rich harmonics while retaining the unique characteristics of different guitars and playing techniques. Hard rock, metal, and punk styles began to flourish in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and the DS-1’s tone had a defining influence on these genres. That trend has endured through multiple generations, and players around the world continue to seek out the classic DS-1 sound.

Gain from Mild to Heavy

From its modest three-knob interface, many different sound colors can be coaxed from the DS-1. Its pioneering two-stage circuit incorporates both transistor and op-amp gain stages. This approach is critical to the DS-1’s characteristic low-frequency fullness, which is loved by guitarists that play heavy music genres. The distortion knob offers an extremely wide range, from a mild boost for driving amps and pedals to full-throttle gain for monster rock riffs.

Powerful Tone Shaping

Unlike typical tone controls that only cut highs, the DS-1’s tone circuit features an innovative design that offers far more range. Turning the knob clockwise increases highs and decreases lows, while going counter-clockwise has the opposite effect. This lets you dial in everything from tight, cutting rhythm sounds to smooth, fat lead voices. The tone control is particularly effective for maintaining low-end definition when using the DS-1 as a booster with vintage-style amps, which often sound muddy when driven with other distortion pedals.

  • Made in Taiwan
  • Package Weight : 2.0 pounds

User questions & answers

Question: I play thrash metal. Would i be able to sound like the thrash metal band exodus especially with the sound there using now with this pedal
Answer: After conjuring the essence of Gary Holt and using the ML-2 you may sound like Exodus and incite the Toxic Waltz. For a newer distortion gain pedal that allows for altered lower tunings check out the MT-2W Metal Zone Waza.
Question: Does this come with a cord to plug into my amp, and is it battery powered
Answer: It does not come with a cord. And the power supply is not included either. You can power it with a battery or power supply. I recommend the power supply. If you decide to use a battery make sure you turn the pedal off an in plug all cables because it will drain the battery.
Question: Does it chug
Answer: Baby, does this thing chug....she also squeals like angels with that thumb harmonic. Feed her with some humbuckers and she'll give you chunks of saturated yummy.
Question: I primarily play death metal with alot of fast speed picking. Does the metal core have decent clarity for a high gain pedal
Answer: Yea. I use it for the heavier stuff like slayer Metallica carcass maiden. Works great and has good tone selections

User questions & answers

Question: This is the version with the jacks on metal? Or the one on plastic
Answer: I found that anything beyond single coils with gain at 11:00 the bass flubs out. I really don’t think it’s tight enough for metal. At high gain it’s more of a loose fuzz than a distortion.
Question: How does this compare to the Ibanez Tube Screamer
Answer: The Red Remote is sold separately.
Question: Why is the pedal blue in the picture? On their website it's green

User questions & answers

Question: I need a great fuzz pedal that fits into my boss pedalboard, with the boss dimensions/footprint? will this one fit? i hear it's good
Answer: plastic jacks
Question: Mine did not come with a power supply cord. why
Answer: i would say very comprable in terms of tone but with perhaps a bit more flexibility b/c of the EQ and a bit more drive
Question: Whic pedal is everyone talking about? you must state which one because amazon groups all of the reviews together regardless of whic your talking abou
Answer: It's actually like a teal... Like a Seafoam green. It will not adversely "color" your tone. Great pedal, BTW.
Question: I need a great fuzz pedal that fits into my boss pedalboard, with the boss dimensions/footprint? will this one fit? i hear it's good
Answer: If you have an amp that cranks most of the way, this will put if over the top. I only have the drive set to about 2 O'clock with the volume the same and when the 805 is switched out. If you play with the same basic tone already you can use this as a boost only... or a boost with adjustable drive and EQ. I used about 4-5 pedals tried and sold in my process of settling on this unit.

Product features

Wampler Dracarys

The Dracarys has everything you love about high gain but with that contemporary depth, aggression, clarity and power. The 3 band active EQ sculpts the tone perfectly, and a gain switch gives you two different styles of distortion. Open is extremely open and free--minimal compression with maximum tone. Tight brings in a natural compression, and when on lower gain settings it can do a really good lower gain tone as well, making the Dracarys one of the most versatile modern distortion pedals today.

Volume

This controls the output level of the pedal. It works just like the volume knob on your guitar or your amp. As you raise the gain knob, and depending on how you adjust the EQ controls and switches, you may need to raise or lower the volume knob to achieve the same output level. That's perfectly normal. We suggest that initially you and where “unity” volume is (when the affected sound level is the same as the unaffected sound level) and work from there.

Open/Tight Toggle Switch

The true versatility lies in this control, when used with the active EQ stack. The open setting sounds just like that - just as it’s described, there isn’t a huge amount of compression and the guitar really opens up with rhythm playing. When switched to tight, there is more compression and the notes sing for ever in solos... Of course, these are just our findings and you may want to use it a different way... try it every way and see what works for you!

Gain

As you can probably guess, this controls the amount of dirt that is heard when the pedal is engaged. The more you turn it clockwise, the heavier and thicker the sound will become. As usual the amount of gain achieved and the style of the gain differs depending on where the switch is.

Got The Scoop

Not practical in a mix, but insanely fun!

Doomsday Has Arrived

A thick, fat, sludgy tidal wave of doom overtaking your signal chain.

Sharp Edges

Rock 'n' Roll always was kind of edgy.

Eddie's Iron Trooper

You take my tone and I’ll take yours too.

Question: What power supply is best for this pedal? 9v but how many amps
Answer: Yes but only on your clean channel, will not have a noticable difference when distorted or overdriven
