14 best guitar eq pedals

Guitar EQ pedals, also known as equalizer pedals, are essential components in a guitarist's arsenal of effects pedals. They allow players to shape and fine-tune their guitar's tone by adjusting the frequency response. These pedals are commonly used to emphasize or cut certain frequencies, which can significantly impact the overall sound of the guitar. Here's what you need to know about guitar EQ pedals:

  1. Basic Function: EQ pedals work by modifying the amplitude of specific frequency bands within the guitar's signal. They typically include sliders or knobs to adjust different frequency ranges, such as bass, midrange, and treble.

  2. Frequency Bands: Guitar EQ pedals often provide control over a range of frequencies, typically from around 20Hz (sub-bass) to 20kHz (high treble). You can boost or cut frequencies within this range to sculpt your guitar's tone.

  3. Graphic vs. Parametric EQ: There are two main types of EQ pedals: graphic and parametric EQs. Graphic EQs have fixed frequency bands with individual controls, while parametric EQs offer more flexibility by allowing you to select and adjust specific frequencies.

  4. Boost and Cut: EQ pedals can both boost and cut frequencies. Boosting a frequency range increases its presence in your sound, making it more pronounced. Cutting a range reduces its prominence.

  5. Tonal Shaping: Guitarists use EQ pedals to shape their tone to fit different musical styles or compensate for the shortcomings of their gear. For example, you can use an EQ pedal to reduce excessive treble in a bright-sounding guitar or add more bass for a thicker tone.

  6. Placement: EQ pedals can be positioned anywhere in your pedalboard chain, but they are commonly placed after distortion, overdrive, or other gain-based effects. This allows you to fine-tune the tone after the initial distortion stage.

  7. Notable Brands: Several reputable manufacturers produce high-quality EQ pedals, including Boss, MXR, Electro-Harmonix, and TC Electronic, among others. Each brand may offer various EQ models with different features.

  8. Power Requirements: Like other guitar pedals, EQ pedals require power to operate. They can typically be powered by a 9-volt battery or an external power supply.

  9. Live Performance and Recording: EQ pedals are valuable tools for live performances and recording sessions. They enable guitarists to adapt their tone to different venues and mix settings.

  10. Versatility: While EQ pedals are commonly associated with electric guitars, they can be used with other instruments and audio sources to shape and enhance their sound.

In summary, guitar EQ pedals are versatile tools that allow guitarists to adjust and shape their instrument's tone to their preferences. Whether you need to cut through a mix, tame harsh frequencies, or boost certain elements of your sound, an EQ pedal can be a valuable addition to your pedalboard.

EarthQuaker Devices Tone Job V2 EQ and Boost Guitar Effects Pedal

Earthquaker Devices

Based on 14 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The tone job is a complete tone enhancement tool designed around a stereo preamp to cover as much frequency range as possible. What does this mean for you, The user? It means it can handle a wide variety of frequencies from electrical guitars, bass guitar, synthesizer machines and just about anything else you can plug in. The treble, bass and middle controls will cut or boost up to 20dB. In addition to that, the level control will boost the signal (post EQ) up to 5 times the input depending on where the dial is set. A simple, perfect pedal to place at the end of your effect chain to boost output and fine tune your tone or at the front of the chain to alter the character of your guitar and breath new life into tired old dirt.

  • A compact Boost & EQ is based on the tone-shaping options available in old audiophile-grade stereo preamps
  • A great addition to your pedalboard no matter what you play
  • You’ll hear full frequency response from your Tone Job everywhere you plug it in
  • Place the Tone Job at the beginning of your chain to alter the overall character of your guitar
  • Use it at the end to boost output at the end of a long cable run and fine-tune your tone
  • Made with care by human hands in Akron, Ohio

User questions & answers

Question: When used as a solo boost, is the switch silent when switching
Answer: I returned it because I couldn't seem to get pleasing tones for my taste. But the quality was excellent. I don't recall specifically, but I'd be surprised if the switch was anything less than silent.
Question: Should you run this through the effects loop or at the front of your pedal board
Answer: You can go either route but it depends on whether you're running dirt pedals into your amp or using your amps drive channel. I would say the Tone Job works best right after the dirt to shape the tone and give you a nice mod boost so it can cut through the mix. If using the amps drive channel, put it in the effects loop (or if your amp has subpar EQing ability you can keep there to supplement or replace the amps EQ unit). If running a full pedalboard I would place after the dirt pedals but before any modulation or time-based effects.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with a power adapter
Answer: No. Mine came with a small adapter cable to attach a 9V battery and plug that cable into the 9V connector of the unit. However, that's just for "external" use and nothing you would like to use as a solution to power the pedal. I am using it with my MXR ISO-Brick and it works like a charm.
Question: Does it have the "noise reduction" circuitry like the mxr
Answer: I'm assuming it uses the exact same circuitry since it is an obvious clone. It sounds really nice, especially with the 18 volts of headroom.
Question: Is this analog or digital
Answer: If you can't tell whether this is analog or digital by looking at the picture, there is a bigger problem at play here!
Question: Why does it have one in and two outs
Answer: It had to have one in and one out. The reason they have two outs, is because MXR included and extra mono out incase you want to record or connect another amp. Simply put: Keeping up with the Joneses.

User questions & answers

Question: Would this fix a slight hiss if put between my pedal board and the sound board
Answer: Yes, it could, but you might have to compensate by adding a little treble to the instrument to compensate for dunking down treble with the pedal.
Question: What is the rated input impedance
Answer: I don't know the exact impedance, but it's hi Z, quarter inch input and output.
Question: Can I use this EQ to adjust the tones/frequencies on my Sennheiser headphones when watching movies? If so, any special adaptors needed
Answer: Nah, this eq pedal isn't a stereo unit you can put between the receiver and the amp or the amp output to the headphones. Doesn't work like that. Really, if your Sennheiser headphones aren't good enough, try a stereo headphones enhancer. Try to think about what's wrong that I can't hear what I"m suppose to. Maybe need a better player.
Question: Will this work with an electric bass guitar
Answer: It works fine for bass. I use mine for a ukulele.

User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone experienced horrible radio interference with this pedal? I only use the best cables, and this pedal is the only problem child
Answer: Not with this pedal but I have experienced that with others in the past. I rectified it by going wireless, since then I've never picked up any radio stations again.
Question: What is input voltage of power supply? Our country only use 220volts ac
Answer: As long as your power supply provides 9v, tip negative, 100mA current minimum power, you'll be fine. Just get the proper AC adapter or pedalboard power supply for your country. Brian Meader Sales Manager The Guitar Sanctuary
Question: is their any difference from the m108 black
Answer: Same no real difference
Question: Does it draw more than 100ma? would like to use it w/a truetone 1 spot power supply...18v/100ma output
Answer: don't know. it comes with an 18V 500ma power supply. and it works well.

JOYO 6-Band EQ Pedal

JF-11 6 Band EQ guitar pedal EQ pedals are a really under appreciated way to shape your guitar signal.

Highs can be boosted for more articulation in overdrive. Mids frequencies can be boosted to stand out in the mix. Lows can be cut to make things less muddy. It's really endless the amount of tone shaping that can be done, as equalizer effects all the other added effects in a chain.

A very useful yet often overlooked pedal is an EQ pedal. They can be used for more than most people realize as well. You can use the JF-11 to help make your solos cut through the mix.

You could use it to tame a particularly bright or bassy guitar. You can use it to just generally beef up your guitar or basses tone as well. You could even use one on an acoustic to give you some extra tonal control and to even help prevent feedback problems.

BOSS Seven-Band Graphic Bass Equalizer Guitar Pedal (GEB-7)

Product description

The GEB-7 is a seven-band equalizer created specifically for the frequency range of the electric bass. Since the frequency range extends down to 50Hz, The GEB-7 is also great for adjusting depth and bottom end of an upright bass with pickups.

  • Model# GEB7

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a significant difference between this and the Boss GE 7 for guitar
Answer: No, the GEQ-215 is not equipped with an input voltage selector switch. In order for this unit to function in regions with 220V circuitry, a third party step down transformer to 110V AC 60 Hz must be used.
Question: does this pedal increase the noise level
Answer: Given that it's rack-mountable and runs on 120 VAC, I'd say it's intended use is neither: live sound (club, church...) reinforcement. But it could also be used at home. The form factor, plus the AC requirement would make use in a vehicle difficult!
Question: Parent of a bass player, he wants a pedal for looping and distortion. Does this pedal do that
Answer: Yes
Question: does the power supply come with the pedel
Answer: Hi, the 50hz knob will affect the sub response. If you have any other questions feel free to contact our tech support at (323)-231-3525 or you can also email us at [email protected]. Thank You.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this going to come with a us ac plug or an eu plug
Answer: I have read a few reviews that indicate that some received the EU adapter. I can say I just got this a couple weeks back or so, mine was shipped with the U.S. supply. So far I have been pleased with this purchase.
Question: You have 8 500ma outputs. will this run 8 pedals rated at 500ma each? or is it limited by the 2000ma power supply. thanks
Answer: To run 8 outputs at 500mA @ 9Vdc will require a supply that is capable of 36Watts output. The input is marked as only 2A @ 12Vdc or 24Watt. If the supply only gives you 24W max then you cannot get 36W with all 8 outputs drawing 500mA.
Question: Does this eliminate RF interference
Answer: No, RF interference would be most likely in your signal chain not power. Use high quality shielded patch cables on your pedal board and your instrument.
Question: will this fit on the underside of a pedaltrain classic
Answer: No familiar with pedtrain, it is one of the smaller pedals

User questions & answers

Question: When I play mine it has the radio going on in the background is their anyway I can fix it
Answer: Is this the only pedal in your chain that picks up radio? It could also be a cable with poor shielding. But mine does not do that.
Question: How much background hiss does it add to your signal
Answer: Doesn't add any particularly noticeable hiss. But many EQ's will do that if you use it to boost level, so I'm sure it does to an extent. I had a BOSS GE-7 for years, and that was one thing I didn't like about it. The Joyo JF-11 is MXR-style, and does not have an independent level control, though it will boost or cut volume if you have bandwidth parameters set in a +/- range as an aggregate.
Question: Are there detents in the sliders (i.e. stops) at the 0dB mark on this pedal? It seems strange that they haven't even included dB level markers at all
Answer: Yes there are stops in the middle at zero- I use this pedal as a boost pedal- works great-
Question: does it come with an 9v adapter
Answer: No. Very few pedals do. At this price an included adapter would be highly unusual. I consider this pedal a great bargain.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work in a bass guitar
Answer: yes, you can use it for your bass guitar.
Question: Will this pedal make my electric guitar sound like an acoustic? hopefully
Answer: No, it will not. Search this one up or another like it. Koogo Guitar Acoustic Pedal
Question: Can the acoustic pedal be used with an acoustic guitar to enhance the natural acoustic sound though PA
Answer: It would probably work better with an acoustic than an electric. I have not run it through the PA yet. And I have not had much luck getting it to make the electric sound like an acoustic. I also have the boss ac-2 and ran it through PA with electric, recorded great. But that is much more expensive. And there is the Mosaic by Digitek to make it sound like a 12 string, but that is $90, so I haven't bought that yet. From what I know now as a very new purchaser, I would say yes to your question, it will probably enhance it.
Question: Dose it come with power cord
Answer: No it does not... good news its uses a regular 9v adapter

BOSS Graphic Equalizer (EQ-200)

BOSS

Based on 142 reviews Check latest price

Product description

With the 200 series, BOSS introduces a new generation of pedals that pack advanced sound and versatility into a streamlined size that saves space on your board. Grab-and-go controls and multi-function switches make operation easy and intuitive, while onboard memories allow you to store multiple Setups for instant recall. All 200 Series pedals feature premium audio quality with 32-bit AD/DA, 32-bit internal processing, and 96 kHz sampling rate, as well as support for additional control via external switches, an expression pedal, or MIDI.

From the Manufacturer

The EQ-200 is the most flexible compact EQ ever created for guitar and bass. It features two wide-ranging 10-band EQ channels, plus an onboard graphic display that shows the current EQ curve at a glance. Selectable signal flow structures configure the channels for stereo, parallel, or series operation, and it’s even possible to patch in external pedals for deep pre/post tone shaping. Going further, the frequency centers of all 10 bands can be set to three different types, letting you optimize the EQ-200’s performance for different instruments.

  • Class-leading sound quality with 32-bit AD/DA, 32-bit floating point processing, and 96 kHz sampling rate
  • Dual 10-band EQs that can be used in stereo, parallel, or Series
  • Insert function for processing external effects with pre And/or post tone shaping
  • Three different range settings: 30 Hz to 12.8 kHz, 32.1 Hz to 16 kHz, and 28 Hz to 14 kHz
  • 15 dB boost/cut on each band, plus overall level control for each channel

User questions & answers

Question: would this pedal displace a noise gate due to its clarity and qualify
Answer: No you can't. Even the other functions (Low-Cut, Level) are applied to both channels simultaneously. At the extremely low price you could always get two units, one for each channel but Left and Right channels are almost always treated identically anyhow.
Question: Do the boss 200 series pedals sound better combined together than say the pedal combined with built in effects in my amp
Answer: Unless a professional hearing-loss test has determined that you have a hearing loss in some portion of the normal hearing spectrum 30 Hz to 15000 Hz in one or both ears, as opposed to a general hearing-loss across the entire spectrum, a graphic equalizer such as the FBQ800 cannot help you. What is more, you would need an equalizer that had a separate set of controls for left channel and right channel which the FBQ800 does not have. Moreover, there is no provision on the FBQ800 for headphone connection and in any event you would some kind of audio frequency amplifier equipment. If you are experiencing general high frequency hearing-loss due to age, an audio equalizer with provision for earphone connection and some form of audio amplifier would help you. Good luck..........W.N.
Question: Boss doesn't stand by the use of third party psu for warranty. anyone have issues with it? 9v, 225ma min. on a pedalboard power supply
Answer: Yes. On the back there are two options for input and two options for output. Those can be either guitar plugs or the typical red/white RCA plugs (left and right channel). You run your source signal (iPad, phone, cd player, etc) through the input on the back of this EQ and then run the output on the EQ to your amp, which would then be connected to your speakers. Personally, I find this extremely mobile EQ to be perfect for connecting between my iPad headphone jack (to the Behringer input on the back) and my ION Block Rocker boom box speaker which is battery operated or powered from an AC outlet. The Behringer does have to be plugged into an AC outlet in order to function. Otherwise I could use the hole system without any electricity around. Look into the ION. It is a fabulous stand alone speaker which can be found at Sams or online for around $125 to $150. And when you tweak it with the Behringer, it is a fantastic combo.
Question: Can eq-200 be use as a microphone input eq
Answer: Thank you for your question. No, the GEQ-215 sliders are not LED lit, the center of the fader is white plastic.

Question: I need a great fuzz pedal that fits into my boss pedalboard, with the boss dimensions/footprint? will this one fit? i hear it's good
Answer: I love all my Wampler Pedals but this was the first I sent back. I never could get the tone I wanted and the fuzz was way too much. I would go with a different pedal.

Product features

Wampler Pantheon

The Pantheon Overdrive plays nice with any rig and modern tone-tools, retains the personality of your playing, AND delivers everything from sweet and creamy push to cranked British Grind. Its powerful EQ section tailors your sound for any gig. The active Baxandall bass control can match any cab and fill up any room. The Presence control adds just the right amount of sparkle & sweetness, and Gain Structure & Voicing Controls allow instant access to different harmonic and overtone structures.

Bass

Straight up at noon is unity. From there you can either add some low end in or take it away. This active control will fatten your tone right up or when you bleed it out make your tone as cutting through the mix as you can.

Treble

High end... Find the balance with the bass control with this, balance that tone.

Presence

This is the one you’re gonna have to watch. We think that most players will leave this all the way off, and only those who dare to venture into the realms of darker and more mysteriously moody set ups will need it.

Volume

Consider this the LOUD knob. The more you turn it, the more you loud you get. We think most guitars will achieve volume unity at about 12 o’clock, but yours may be slightly different.

Gain Level and Overdrive Voice

Gain Level - 3 levels of dirt. At the bottom you get a regular amount, the original amount. At the top, you get the modified amount – the young pretender’s version - in right there in the middle is the high gain version. Faces will be melted. Names will be taken.

Overdrive Voice - Brian has perfectly crafted three independent overdrive voicings (soft clipping, hard clipping and both) for you that are classic and contemporary BB style tones. In order to enjoy the full versatility of the Pantheon, it is best to tweak this control along with the ‘Gain Level’ switch... for the classic, original, BB tone have both switches in the down position. For the newer modded tone it’s best to have the ‘voice’ setting in the middle and the ‘Gain Level’ down - For those higher gain sounds, put the gain switch in the middle and then try the voicings all the way into that rabbit hole of tonal perfection...

Gain

The home of the dirt. The more you turn it, the more dirt you get. This control is extremely susceptible to the EQ stack and of course, the switches. If you set it someplace and then play with the EQ or one of those switches, this might need a little tweak to bring it back to where you like it.
