13 best distortion pedals

Distortion pedals are a type of guitar effects pedal used to alter the sound of an electric guitar, specifically by adding distortion or overdrive to the signal. These effects are widely used by electric guitarists to achieve a gritty, edgier, and heavier sound compared to the clean, natural tone of the guitar.

The purpose of a distortion pedal is to clip the audio signal, resulting in a more aggressive sound by introducing harmonics and compressing the dynamics of the signal. This can range from a mild overdrive that slightly changes the tone to intense distortion that radically transforms the sound, often associated with rock, metal, and other heavier genres of music.

Typically, a distortion pedal has controls that allow the guitarist to adjust parameters like gain (the amount of distortion), tone (equalization to shape the sound), and sometimes level (volume). These controls provide the flexibility to tailor the distorted sound according to the player's preference and the musical context.

Distortion pedals can be analog or digital, with each type offering different sonic characteristics and levels of versatility. Analog pedals often provide a warmer, more organic sound, while digital pedals may offer a broader range of features and precise control over the distortion effect.

Musicians often use distortion pedals in combination with amplifiers to achieve a desired tone. The placement of the distortion pedal in the signal chain, whether before or after other effects like delay or reverb, can also influence the final sound.

In summary, distortion pedals are essential tools for electric guitarists seeking to create a distorted, more aggressive sound, making them a staple in the arsenal of gear for musicians in various genres, particularly rock and metal.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with the power adapter
Answer: Yes- it takes a few hours out of the box to fully expand. We waited about 5 hours before trying it and it was fully expanded with no issues!
Question: Why won’t this pedal work with a 9 volt battery? i have the same issue with the other 3 i got also
Answer: I asked their customer service. They said mattress is designed in the US and made in China. But at the price we are really impressed.Obviously, just only China can produce things with high quality and low price
Question: Does it chug
Answer: My one-year-old son poured a whole bottle of water on the bed. Although there was no damage, no spots were left, and the bed felt the same, I just let the spots air dry. So I said no, it won't be damaged when wet.
Question: The pedal include elevtricty adaptor and a cable
Answer: I would consider this mattress semi-firm. It is not like any traditional mattress where you lay down and either sink into it because is too soft or you feel like laying on a piece of wood if it’s too firm. This one lets your body sink just enough to make you feel supported.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this guitar effects pedal add a lot of noise to your signal
Answer: Yes and it sounds pretty good but it definitely has that Rat character. I really like the Hardwire Valve Distortion for my bass.
Question: What does Crunch Distortion pedal sound like
Answer: I did not experience muddy or out of tune issues. However distortion has a slight trebly tone added. Bottom is slightly lost. I like the RAT and would recommend.
Question: What is included with the product
Answer: For recently made Rats, the bottom of the box it came in should have a sticker saying Made in China. They're very well made and very reliable. ProCo just assembles them in China and they're shipped back to Missouri. There were US made ones for years and the only difference you have to think about is the jack for the optional external power supply is different than the US made Rat, so make sure you buy the right one. The parts are almost all the same, although the Rat has been a work in progress since the 1970s.
Question: Is this for bass or for guitar
Answer: As per the product description: "...9 – 18V Operation: Increased headroom and fidelity with 18V operation and less “sagging” as compared to older RATs...."

Question: can I buy just the wire
Answer: I bought the phase pedal,It doesn't seem to affect my tone when I kick it on, no volume or tone changes, just the tremolo effect.
Question: Does it serve as an aby pedal
Answer: It has a great over-saturated, thick distortion sound. Nice, round & full-bodied tone & not "buzzsaw" or too fuzzy. It can do an overdrive, light distortion very well but that's not really its strong point. If that's the sound you're looking for check out the Kmise US Dream pedal (Purple, I think), it does the hot tube/overdrive really well. But if you're wanting a thick chunky sound, this is what you want.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this optical, vca, or fet compression
Answer: Not SO heavy, if the amp is totally clean it can get it nice and dirty, a littler crunchy. Blues/rock tones. I use it as a boost in front of a high gain head. If you're looking for a real heavy pedal try an OCD or a Maxon OD808.
Question: What exactly does a compressor pedal do
Answer: Yes, but it will add some mid range, in a good way tho.
Question: Works great on bass
Answer: Generally, I turn the amp on first. I am not sure if there is an order, but, it has never led me astray. Same order reversed for turning off.
Question: Whats the difference between compressor and distortion
Answer: It doesn't come with any patch cords and it runs on a battery (although you can get an adapter for it)

User questions & answers

Question: Will this bad boy work with a microphone instead of guitar? Will it give distortion to voice too
Answer: It's said to be a Dynacomp clone which would be a CA3080, which would be a pretty generic op amp circuit, probably jfets on a chip.
Question: Does this come with a power supply
Answer: It makes soft sounds louder to get to the same volume as louder ones, evening out your playing. Consider how you can hit a low note on a bass that can rattle your teeth but hitting a note on a higher string seems to have little impact. Turn the compressor on and it all is very even. It will also make your tone have more of an expressive attack.
Question: In the description it says it can be powered by battery. Does it have battery in it
Answer: I purchased this for my bass-and it totally rocks-super tone and quality for the price-have other pedals that have cost three times the price, and this little boss is worth it!💯👌
Question: Where do you put the battery
Answer: They are totally different effects. Compression evens out your signal. It raises any weak part of your guitars output and squashes the top end to give you a more even balanced sound. This can also give you a bit more sustain. You may not even notice it's on but it does give you nice control of your overall signal to the amp. Distortion gives you a raged raw grunge sound that blurs your notes in chords and adds a hard attack to singular notes. There are also Overdrive pedals that allow you to get the sound of an amp cranked way up but at a lower volume. All are different. Use YouTube to search examples of all three types of pedals.

Answer: Using a strat with passive pickups, I never had that problem.
Question: How does this stack up to the boss metalzone mt2, as far as playing heavy thrash , slighly downtuned
Answer: Hi Carlos,I have not tried the Rat pedal in many years. I can tell you that the Black Secret is not a noisy pedal, and has been a popular seller for us these past 3 years.
Question: Is this pedal good for a Metallica or Slayer distortion sound? Can it handle it
Answer: The Black Secret is a clone of a RAT. The Rat has such a distinct sound that if you like that sound I don't think the type of amp will make that big of a difference

And the reason you can leave it always on is that you can get a great clean sound just by rolling back your guitar's volume knob!

    • Super Lead: The ‘Super Lead’ mode gives you the great rock sound of a Marshall Super Lead amp with awesome harmonics, touch sensitivity, cab thumb, and kerrang.
    • Super Bass: The ‘Super Bass’ mode gives you the tone and gain structure of a Marshall Super Bass (which is very similar to a JTM45, JTM50/100, or very early plexi).
    • The Super Lead and Super Bass are two remarkably different amps, and so the DLS is essentially two pedals in one, not a two channel pedal.

    User questions & answers

Question: Does this take a 9v input so i can plug into my voodoo lab power supply
Answer: Is the gain up too high on your pedal and/or amp?
Question: did anyone have extreme noise issues with this pedal right out of the box, i.e., extreme squawk and chirp with gain and tone both at
Answer: I love this pedal. If you like To play 80’s thrash this is it. Very Metallica sounding.
Question: Does anyone use this pedal through a marshall or marshall clone? I play thru a jtm 45 clone. I'd heard of people playing plexi drives thru mashalls
Answer: No matallica sucks this sound is way better than those selfrighious greedy money slaves who lost touch with what they're supposed to stand for and this pedal is cool natalia is the fool the kabal ownes their souls
Question: how might it sound when played through a peavey 112 bandit any thoughts
Answer: No do not do that. Most (and for practically speaking you can say ALL UNLESS NOTED) distortion/fuzz/gain/dirt boxes are 9volt and center negative. Most (basically all) mini pedals, common names cheap and expensive (Donner, Mooer, Nux, JOYO, TC Electronic, Boss, Behringer, DigiTech, Dunlop, Morley, Electro-Harmonix) pedals are 9 volt. If a pedal is 12, 18 volts etc.. it will always state that somewhere on box or description. I have seen some, not many, people answer this question wrong. You cannot and never should power a 9 volt pedal with 18volts. U will fry the pedal every time and possibly ruin much more (wall wart, power supply, anything).. It is NEVER, AND I REPEAT NEVER acceptable to over power a pedal. There are pedals that are made to run on multiple volts. There's a DOD pedal i own that can run on 9 volts or 12. However, also on that Pedals Amazon page there is a question asking this specifically. And someone answers saying the girl trying to help them at Guitar Center plugged it into a 18 volt supply and instantly fried the pedal. And not so ironically on that same page, there is a doof saying it's fine to do so. For some Reason people like to comment on things they know nothing about. If your pedal is 9volt u can NEVER power it with higher volts. If there are any follow up questions, feel free to ask Google. A simple Google search will assure this is never ok. Don't you love how people can still answer questions with the wrong answer in 2019 as if Google doesn't exist? As if th 8 million people who are answering your question one way are wrong but you are the secret knowledge keeper. If anyone ever tells you otherwise, strip them of their instruments and spit on their salad. They are useless in a world where the useless can't hide anymore. These negative remarks are in no way directed at the person asking the question. I buy dozens of pedals a year and see numerous and numerous and numerous people answer this exact question wrong. Then fight with the person who tells them they are incorrect. As if any moron can't just type it in to Google and see that that person has no business answering this question. I bet the guy telling u that you can do that REALLY can't play his instrument but keeps telling you how good they are

Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret Guitar Overdrive Pedal

Marshall amps helped supercharge the performance, and shape the sound of rock and roll. When the house lights dimmed, all you could see through the hazy darkness was the array of red pilot lights shining from a backline wall of Marshall stacks. It was the ultimate prelude to the impending rock. In the absence of your own personal wall of Marshalls and the necessary road crew required to lug them around, the Dirty Little Secret (DLS) is the perfect secret weapon in your tone arsenal. This is your 'always on' pedal, designed to be the 'foundation' of your pedalboard, transforming any amplifier into those raging British stacks. It forms the core of your guitar sound which you can enhance and embellish by adding boosters, fuzzes, filters, and other overdrives in front of it – just like you would in front of a real amp. And the reason you can leave it always on is that you can get a great clean sound just by rolling back your guitar’s volume knob! That’s the way the old school Marshall players did things!

It’s a dirt box, right? How hard could it be? Plug it in and turn the knobs and rock your guitar. Explore the three tone knobs, play with different gain settings via the Pre-Amp control. But plug it in by itself first. Get familiar with it on its own before integrating it in with your pedalboard. Your new Dirty Little Secret ships in 'Super Lead' mode. So, most likely, that’s the mode you’ll hear when you first plug in out of the box. After you’ve had a good session rocking out with your new Dirty Little Secret, come back here and read on to get more insight and tips on how to get the most out of your new DLS.

    Treble

The treble knob is an important knob. Circuit-wise, it is actually a sort of 'mixer' control, mixing between the treble side and the middle/bass side. So if you want a less bassy sound, not only would you turn the Bass control down but you might also want to turn the Treble control up to 'mix' less of the middle/bass frequencies into the sound.

    Middle

The Middle knob can also be thought of as a sort of 'gain' knob since most of the guitar's energy is in the middle frequencies. So if you want the gainiest sound possible, run the Middle knob high. But if you want a less gainy sound run it lower. Which means you might also want to run the Treble and Bass knobs even lower to balance things out.

    Bass

The Bass knob let's a lot of low end through in either mode. In SB mode, the lows boosted are deeper. And in SL mode the lows affected are up slightly higher, right in the 'thump' zone. So in SL mode, you get prominent upper mids from the Treble and Middle controls and thump frequencies from the Bass knob - perfect for a rock sound that is full yet cuts through the band mix! No wonder Super Leads were used by, um, almost everybody!

    Pre-amp

This controls the gain or amount of overdrive. The new DLS was tuned to allow a bit more gain than most plexi Marshalls actually got. Super Bass mode was tuned to have less gain then the Super Lead mode to get more of that early Marshall response. So depending on what mode you're in, the Pre-Amp control will respond differently. There are great tones to be had throughout the Pre-Amp control's rotation so spend time with it to find the perfect sweet spot! In general, the lower you have the Pre-Amp control set the higher you'll want to have the Master volume control set and the higher you'll be able to get away with setting the Bass knob. While the new DLS is loads of fun to just crank the gain and wail on there are a lot of subtle shades of lower gain overdrive available. If you run the Pre-Amp control really low and the Master volume up high you can get a virtually clean sound and use the DLS' tone knobs as a tone shaper.

    Designer's Notes

Hi, and thanks for getting a Dirty Little Secret! I'm really stoked on this new version of the DLS and hope you will be too! I managed to pack a lot of Marshall tones in there between the SL and SB modes. It was a tight fit but I managed to cram it all in there! The SB mode solved a problem I've had for years - how to get a Fuzz Faze to sound great at any volume. Even my beloved purple Marshalls didn't sound good with a Fuzz Face. After much research and amp modding, I figured out the secret. And I was able to bring that insight into the design of the SB mode on the DLS. Now I (and YOU!) can enjoy great Fuzz Face (or any other fuzz) tone through almost any amp at any volume! And the SL mode. Plug a humbucker guitar into the DLS set to SL mode and tell me if that's not the most fun you've had playing guitar in a while.

    User questions & answers

Question: Would this pedal get a sound similar to a ProCo Rat, or Boss Distortion
Answer: Absolutely. Any standard negative center 9v supply (including your Voodoo) will work.
Question: What kind of output it gives? Stereo or mono? Can it be used with headphone through a converter
Answer: Although I do not own a Galileo Booster, I do own several Catalinbread pedals. Due to the high-quality manufacture I've never encountered any issues with them. I recommend going to their website and either contacting them about the problem or see if you can download an operator's manual.
Question: Has anyone used this on bass? If so, what is your opinion
Answer: I play a Marshall Vintage Modern 50 watt 2x12” combo. It stock runs a pair of KT66 tubes and for all intents and purposes is a modernized JTM 45 with a few options that weren’t on the original and the extra features can be utilized or not. It has an extra, switchable gain stage, it has an optional mid boost and an effects loop. As it does differ from the JTM 45 in one respect that some claim disqualifies it from being compared to the JTM 45, a Master Volume feature. This amp further has the ability to dial in the preamp gain with a pair of gain knobs, one for the low end gain and one for the high end gain. What is cool is that one can dial it in spot on with the preamp gain structure like the old JTM 45 had with its static preamp gain and the result is that it sounds and responds like a JTM 45. I have a vintage JTM 45 too and that’s why I know this. My point...running the aforementioned Caitlinbread pedal into the Vintage Modern is like a “More” option in my tone chain. With my ‘60 LP, I can get those classic tones and not have to crank the amp up to “Cops knocking on your door” levels. That’s where the pedal shines for me. Why do I have the Vintage Modern if I have an original JTM 45? Because the JTM 45 has been retired to studio duty. It’s far too valuable and getting kind of cranky in a delicate way to be loading it in and out of club gigs. The Vintage Modern also keeps me in good graces with my bandmates and the board operators in the clubs because I’m not blasting my bandmates off the stage with Jet engine at take off decibel levels. Oh, and the ‘60 LP...it no longer goes out to gigs either. I have an ‘88 LP Std. with Duncan Whole Lotta Love humbuckers in it that gets it done. Find yourself a used Vintage Modern and your problem will be solved.
Question: has anyone used this with a solid state amp
Answer: I'm a massive fan of Catalinbread pedals. I own a RAH, a Sabbra Cadabra, and an Echorec. With the Bandit on the clean channel (eq'd to your taste), I'd use the DLS to push the amp. It could sound cool this way. On the Bandit's lead channel, the DLS may muddy the clarity of your notes. It pays to experiment though as you may find you enjoy running it this way.
