14 best boost guitar pedals

Boost guitar pedals are a type of electric guitar effects pedal that is designed to increase the volume and sometimes add a bit of color or tonal enhancement to a guitar's signal. These pedals are commonly used by guitarists to push their amplifiers into overdrive or distortion, add sustain to their tone, or simply to give their sound a volume boost during solos or certain parts of a song. Here's what you should know about boost guitar pedals:

  1. Volume Boost: The primary function of a boost pedal is to increase the volume of the guitar signal. This can be useful for boosting the overall level of your sound, especially when you need to cut through the mix during a solo or specific parts of a song.

  2. Transparent Tone: Many boost pedals are designed to be transparent, meaning they should not significantly alter the tone or color of your guitar's sound. They are often used to maintain the natural tone of your guitar and amplifier while providing the desired volume boost.

  3. Gain Staging: Boost pedals are often used in conjunction with other pedals or the amplifier's natural overdrive to push the signal into higher gain stages. This can result in a smoother, more saturated overdrive or distortion sound.

  4. Tonal Options: Some boost pedals come with additional controls that allow you to fine-tune the pedal's effect on your tone. These controls may include EQ adjustments, tone shaping options, or even a clean blend to mix in the unaffected signal.

  5. Placement in the Signal Chain: Boost pedals can be placed anywhere in your guitar's signal chain, depending on the desired effect. Placing it before overdrive or distortion pedals can lead to a more saturated sound, while placing it after can increase the overall volume without affecting the gain stage as much.

  6. Buffered vs. True Bypass: Boost pedals may have different bypass options. Buffered bypass maintains your guitar signal's integrity when the pedal is off, while true bypass completely disconnects the pedal from the signal path when not in use.

  7. Power Options: Boost pedals typically run on a standard 9-volt power supply, but some may have additional power requirements. Make sure to check the manufacturer's specifications.

  8. Variety of Brands: There are numerous brands and models of boost pedals available, each with its own unique features and tonal characteristics. Popular manufacturers of boost pedals include Xotic Effects, TC Electronic, and MXR, among others.

In summary, boost guitar pedals are a valuable tool for guitarists looking to increase their volume, shape their tone, or push their amplifier into overdrive. They come in various designs and offer different features to cater to the needs and preferences of musicians. The choice of a boost pedal depends on your playing style and the specific sonic qualities you're looking to achieve.

User questions & answers

Question: What exactly does this pedal do
Answer: Simple explanation. - it’s a volume boost. If you want to cut through the mix for a solo or to add a little something, turning this pedal on increases your volume to do that. Depending on where you place it in your signal chain, it can also add more gain for your overdrive/distortion pedals.
Question: Does the spark mini tighten up the sound for fast rythm playing or simply adds a boost
Answer: Yes, it does both! It kinda fattens up the sound while boosting the signal, adds a great feel. It takes my tele and my strat's clean tone to a whole new level.
Question: Is the switch quiet
Answer: Yes. Super-quiet. I've opened one. The switch is pressing a small spring that depresses a mini, surface-mount button on the circuit board. It has a soft touch with no mechanical click noise, at all.
Question: Which 9v power supply should i buy to power the spark mini boost
Answer: Hi there Michael,This guy works with any 9V DC adapter with a minimum of 250mA and a correct fitting adapter. A one-spot adapter for example would work great, such as this: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/visual-sound-1-spot--space-saving-9v-dc-adapter#productDetailIf you have any other questions, I am happy to help. Question: what happened to the little Tumnus creature on the front

Wampler Tumnus V2

There is one overdrive circuit to this day has been the most talked about, the most sought after, and the most mythical of them all. It’s big, it’s expensive, and it has certainly earned its place at the table. Wampler has painstakingly and faithfully reproduced that magical tone in all its glory in an unbelievably small package, and its name is Tumnus.

Let’s face it, not everyone has room for a four-legged beast on their board. This slender biped slips in and out of a myriad of tight situations. Now you can have the tone. Now you can have history. Now you can have it all without having to sell your prized gear possessions. The Wampler Tumnus, standing up for that amazing tone, but without the outrageous claims often associated with it.

Versatility

Tumnus is a versatile addition to any setup, any style. Stack it with another pedal to help push or shape the total amount of gain, use it as a stand alone OD, or use it as a slightly dirty boost to push the front end of your amp. Even use it as a buffer, because just like the original this pedal is not true bypass. Instead, this pedal contains a buffered bypass tone legendary in its own right.

Controls and Components

3 streamlined control knobs (Volume, Gain, and Tone) allow you to quickly dial in your tones no matter what the gig calls for. We aren’t going to claim it has magical parts, or that we sourced out 60 year old diodes that make it perfect, but we are going to say that during our research we looked at everything available and then only used the parts that Brian chose to replicate that amazing tone.

Gain

Quite self explanatory! This adds grit and dirt to the affected signal. Start with it all the way off (counter clockwise) and up the volume from unity and you have an amazing boost, it will fatten up your tone remarkably... When you bring the gain control up the glorious thickness this pedal is famous for appears - as a stand alone boost, overdrive or pre-gain boost, this is the key to finding your tone.

Volume

You guessed it, this is where the level comes from. You will probably want to start at an equal volume to it bypassed, unity. You’ll probably be surprised that this is much lower than other OD pedals, this is because one of the features of this pedal is the headroom in it to act as a pre-gain boost.

Treble

Adds top end to the signal. Once again, this is extremely useful if you use the pedal as a pre-gain boost or overdrive as it’s the top end that makes your tone cut through the mix!

Donner Dumbal Drive Guitar Pedal True Analog Circuit Overdrive Pedal

Donner

Based on 36 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Donner Dumbal Drive is a true analog circuit overdrive pedal based on the legendary D-style amplifier, provides a clean boost to mild crunchy overdrive tone, enhances the natural sound of your guitar and amplifier.

A real tube like sound, smooth compression and huge dynamic offer you glossy and transparent guitar tone.

Two ways of EQ and three clipping circuit mode provide you a lot of options to adjust your rigs while preserving its fundamental character.

Once you try it, you will never forget the sound of Dumbal Drive.

Notes:

Three clipping circuit mode:

Mode I controls the distortion of the upper half of the waveform, and the sense of hearing is that the high frequency becomes more, the sound head becomes larger, and a small amount of compression.

Mode II controls the distortion of the upper and lower half waves, and the sound is balanced overload, and basically feels little compression.

Mode III controls the distortion of the lower half wave, and the sense of hearing is that the low frequency becomes more and the sense of compression is strongest.

Volume:

Gain means input signal and Vol means output signal. Vol and Gain controls the input volume together. The size of the input signal is also related to the size of the guitar input signal.

The setting of the Donner Dumbal Drive is that when the gain and volume are at 12 o'clock, the overall output volume is balanced. As the gain decreases, the output signal needs to be increased to maintain balance, and the volume must be increased accordingly. The opposite is the same.

  • An overdrive circuit based on the legendary D-style amplifier.
  • Three clipping circuit mode.
  • Two ways of EQ adjustment.
  • Natural sound, real tube like touching, smooth compression and huge dynamic. Provides a clean transparent boost to mild warm crunchy overdrive guitar tone. A re-edition of *Timmy Overdrive.
  • Keeps the characteristics of the tones that the guitar naturally produces. 100% Analog, True Bypass. DC 9V Adapter power supply. (plug polarity is positive on the barrel and negative in the center).(Not Included)

User questions & answers

Question: Does this guitar effects pedal add noise to your signal
Answer: It lifts a motorcycle. I am not going to go out to the garage to check. Call the manufacturer.
Question: Is it a clone of anything? What is it comparable to
Answer: Do not know exactly how many, but its not real quick, but its about as few turns to keep the effort from being too much. I raise an 850-900# bagger and its fairly stiff. I am thinking about putting an impact wrench or 1/2" drill motor and a 7/8" socket to raise it, after it makes initial contact

Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra Boost Overdrive Guitar Pedal

Tony Iommi arguably had the most influential tone in the history of electric guitar. Really, when you think Black Sabbath you immediately think 'Electric Guitar'. His early signature sound was the result of an always on treble-booster plugged into cranked Laney Supergroup amps. This approach to guitar is extremely rewarding and fun, but lost in this day and age because honestly who can really get away with the stage volume anymore? Far and few between! We designed the Sabbra Cadabra to give players that sonic experience, re-contextualized for today’s approach where players tend to use amps solely within their clean range at more mortal volume levels.

The Sabbra Cadabra is a custom-tuned Rangemaster-based booster combined with the pre-amp section of a Laney Supergroup. The two circuits are carefully voiced together to achieve the riffs of doom tone that Tony Iommi is so well known for. Four controls (Range, Gain, Presence, and VOL 4) allow you to fine-tune the response to your guitar and rig. If you’re familiar with Sabbath’s live album, ‘Past Lives’, then you’ll understand where we were going with this pedal – huge, raw, responsive!

The Sabbra Cadabra’s circuit is optimized for drop-tuning but works equally well for standard tuning thanks to the Range control, which allows you to 'customize' the treble-booster section of the circuit and adjust it anywhere from treble-boost to full-range boost.

According to Mr. Iommi, someone modded his Dallas Rangemaster. “I don’t know what he did to it, but it was really good. I used that treble booster on all the early Sabbath albums and put it into the Laney because it boosted the input and gave it the overdrive I was looking for, which amps in the early days didn’t have.” Then in 1979 another tech threw it into the garbage, thinking it was crap. Can you believe that?! So no one really knows what was done to it. But based on our experience, it was most likely changing it to be more of a full-range boost and possibly re-biasing it. That’s what we mean when we say you can 'customize' the treble-boost section with the Range knob – you can continuously adjust it to any input frequency response and feel that you want.

EarthQuaker Devices Tone Job V2 EQ and Boost Guitar Effects Pedal

Earthquaker Devices

Based on 14 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The tone job is a complete tone enhancement tool designed around a stereo preamp to cover as much frequency range as possible. What does this mean for you, The user? It means it can handle a wide variety of frequencies from electrical guitars, bass guitar, synthesizer machines and just about anything else you can plug in. The treble, bass and middle controls will cut or boost up to 20dB. In addition to that, the level control will boost the signal (post EQ) up to 5 times the input depending on where the dial is set. A simple, perfect pedal to place at the end of your effect chain to boost output and fine tune your tone or at the front of the chain to alter the character of your guitar and breath new life into tired old dirt.

  • A compact Boost & EQ is based on the tone-shaping options available in old audiophile-grade stereo preamps
  • A great addition to your pedalboard no matter what you play
  • You’ll hear full frequency response from your Tone Job everywhere you plug it in
  • Place the Tone Job at the beginning of your chain to alter the overall character of your guitar

  • Made with care by human hands in Akron, Ohio

User questions & answers

Question: When used as a solo boost, is the switch silent when switching
Answer: I returned it because I couldn't seem to get pleasing tones for my taste. But the quality was excellent. I don't recall specifically, but I'd be surprised if the switch was anything less than silent.
Question: Should you run this through the effects loop or at the front of your pedal board
Answer: You can go either route but it depends on whether you're running dirt pedals into your amp or using your amps drive channel. I would say the Tone Job works best right after the dirt to shape the tone and give you a nice mod boost so it can cut through the mix. If using the amps drive channel, put it in the effects loop (or if your amp has subpar EQing ability you can keep there to supplement or replace the amps EQ unit). If running a full pedalboard I would place after the dirt pedals but before any modulation or time-based effects.

User questions & answers

Question: Does anyone have experience using this with a bass guitar
Answer: Although I do not own a Galileo Booster, I do own several Catalinbread pedals. Due to the high-quality manufacture I've never encountered any issues with them. I recommend going to their website and either contacting them about the problem or see if you can download an operator's manual.
Question: is the buffer always on so the switch just engages the booster
Answer: I play a Marshall Vintage Modern 50 watt 2x12” combo. It stock runs a pair of KT66 tubes and for all intents and purposes is a modernized JTM 45 with a few options that weren’t on the original and the extra features can be utilized or not. It has an extra, switchable gain stage, it has an optional mid boost and an effects loop. As it does differ from the JTM 45 in one respect that some claim disqualifies it from being compared to the JTM 45, a Master Volume feature. This amp further has the ability to dial in the preamp gain with a pair of gain knobs, one for the low end gain and one for the high end gain. What is cool is that one can dial it in spot on with the preamp gain structure like the old JTM 45 had with its static preamp gain and the result is that it sounds and responds like a JTM 45. I have a vintage JTM 45 too and that’s why I know this. My point...running the aforementioned Caitlinbread pedal into the Vintage Modern is like a “More” option in my tone chain. With my ‘60 LP, I can get those classic tones and not have to crank the amp up to “Cops knocking on your door” levels. That’s where the pedal shines for me. Why do I have the Vintage Modern if I have an original JTM 45? Because the JTM 45 has been retired to studio duty. It’s far too valuable and getting kind of cranky in a delicate way to be loading it in and out of club gigs. The Vintage Modern also keeps me in good graces with my bandmates and the board operators in the clubs because I’m not blasting my bandmates off the stage with Jet engine at take off decibel levels. Oh, and the ‘60 LP...it no longer goes out to gigs either. I have an ‘88 LP Std. with Duncan Whole Lotta Love humbuckers in it that gets it done. Find yourself a used Vintage Modern and your problem will be solved.
Question: Hey, can this run on a battery, or only with the PS
Answer: I'm a massive fan of Catalinbread pedals. I own a RAH, a Sabbra Cadabra, and an Echorec. With the Bandit on the clean channel (eq'd to your taste), I'd use the DLS to push the amp. It could sound cool this way. On the Bandit's lead channel, the DLS may muddy the clarity of your notes. It pays to experiment though as you may find you enjoy running it this way.
Question: Where is the idea location to place this unit amongst all my other pedal on the floor? (2) Should I hold off on purchasing a Buffer
Answer: You could try to use a different power supply. Chances are it won't make a difference. Some guitar pedals have noisy foot switches, even more expensive ones made by the high end brands such as MXR or Electro-Harmonix.

Product features

JHS Prestige

The JHS Pedals Prestige is a booster/buffer/enhancer that will give you that 'something', the magic, that you’ve been looking for. In a simple package, the Prestige can be used as an always-on preamp or buffer, or crank it up to send your amp into natural overdrive that will dazzle audiences far and wide. It’s time you added the JHS Pedals Prestige to your rig so you always have an ace up your sleeve!

Volume Knob

The Prestige features one knob for volume. In the first 25%, you have a natural buffer/enhancer that is great for long cable runs or just to add a touch of brightness to your signal. At 25% to 75% the Prestige becomes a volume boost to give you a nice push for solos or to put in front of an overdrive to create more saturation. Above 75% and you’ll be sending your amp into a meaty natural breakup by pushing the tubes on your amp. This can be used as a first stage overdrive or a second stage to maintain your other overdrives’ tone while giving more of everything you love.

About JHS Pedals

JHS Pedals is the result of Josh Scott’s desire to build quality effects pedals that stand out in an over-saturated market. Started in early 2007 by way of a DIY repair to a Boss Blues Driver, JHS Pedals has evolved into an effects pedal company recognized world-wide. Josh’s years of touring and session work along with eventual electronics tinkering bring the experience and knowledge of what musicians need and want in their rigs, and that is one of the core values that JHS was built upon.

With a complete electric guitar, bass guitar, utility, and Mod Shop, JHS Pedals offers one of the broadest lines of effects on the market today. We value and commit to designing, populating, and assembling pedals that sound excellent, are easy to use, and work correctly.
