11 best delay pedals
Delay pedals are popular effects units used in the world of music, particularly in electric guitar playing. They are a type of single-effect pedal that falls under the category of time-based effects. Here's what you need to know about delay pedals:
Function: Delay pedals are designed to produce an echo or repeat of the original sound, creating a delayed audio effect. This effect is achieved by recording the input signal and then playing it back after a specified time delay.
Delay Time: Delay pedals allow you to control the time delay between the original sound and the repeated sound. This delay time can range from a fraction of a second to several seconds, depending on the specific pedal and its settings.
Feedback: Most delay pedals include a feedback control, which determines the number of repeated echoes and their intensity. Increasing the feedback level will create more pronounced and longer-lasting repeats.
Mix Control: Delay pedals often feature a mix or blend control that adjusts the balance between the dry (original) signal and the wet (delayed) signal. This allows you to control the intensity of the delay effect, from subtle to prominent.
Types of Delay: There are various types of delay effects that can be achieved with delay pedals, including:
- Analog Delay: Provides warm, organic-sounding repeats.
- Digital Delay: Offers pristine, clear repeats and more precise control.
- Tape Delay Simulation: Mimics the characteristics of vintage tape echo machines.
- Modulated Delay: Adds modulation effects like chorus or vibrato to the delayed signal.
Tap Tempo: Some delay pedals come with a tap tempo feature, allowing you to set the delay time by tapping a footswitch in rhythm with your music. This is especially useful for syncing delay effects with the tempo of a song.
Presets: Many modern delay pedals offer preset storage capabilities, enabling you to save and recall different delay settings for various songs or styles of playing.
Applications: Delay pedals are commonly used in a wide range of musical genres, from rock and blues to ambient and experimental music. They can add depth, space, and texture to your sound, creating a sense of spaciousness or enhancing solos.
Compatibility: Delay pedals can be used with various musical instruments, not just electric guitars. They are also compatible with keyboards, bass guitars, and even vocals, expanding their versatility.
Signal Chain: The placement of the delay pedal in your signal chain can affect the overall sound. Placing it before other effects like distortion or overdrive can yield different results compared to placing it after.
In summary, delay pedals are essential tools for musicians looking to add depth, atmosphere, and creativity to their music. With various types and features available, you can choose a delay pedal that suits your musical style and preferences, whether you want subtle ambiance or dramatic, rhythmic echoes.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I play dotted 8 with this unit |
Answer: | UPDATE to previous answer. > On other delay pedals that feature sub-divisions, many let you tap in quarter notes and they automatically set the dotted-eighth or any other sub-division based on the quarter note tap you input. The BOSS DD3-T requires you to actually tap in the eighth notes. |
Question: | Does this come with a power cord |
Answer: | This does not include a power cord. I believe it is shipped with a 9-volt battery. If you choose to use the power input you must supply your own source. If you search "1 Spot" you will see options such as a wall-wart type supply (with or without daisy chain), or isolated power supplies. |

The Iconic Digital Delay, Enhanced for Modern Players
BOSS’s iconic DD-3 Digital Delay has been a pedalboard staple since 1986, loved everywhere for its great sound and simple operation. With the DD-3T, we’ve updated the classic stomp with enhanced functionality while fully retaining the original’s sound and control layout. It’s now possible to tap in delay tempos using the onboard switch or an external one, with your choice of three beat subdivisions. And the direct output jack has been moved next to the main output, providing easier connectivity for wet/dry setups.
A Classic Through and Through
In continuous production for over three decades, the DD-3 has been the go-to delay stomp for countless players. Based on the DD-2- the DD-3 is revered for its warm, round delay tone and simple controls that let you dial in sounds fast. The DD-3T’s sound circuitry and controls are identical to the DD-3, delivering every drop of that classic vibe you know and love.
Tap Tempo On Board
A key addition the DD-3T brings is tap tempo, an essential feature for creating the rhythmic delay effects at the heart of many guitar styles. In delay mode, hold the pedal switch for two seconds to toggle between bypass and tap operation. And for on-demand tap control, simply connect an external footswitch. When the DD-3T receives tap input, up to 800 ms of delay time is available, and the Mode knob sets the tap subdivision (quarter-note triplet, dotted-eighth note, or quarter note).
Direct Out for Wet/Dry Setups
The DD-3T features a direct output jack like the DD-3, but it’s been moved next to the main output jack to make connections easier. Plugging a cable into the direct out converts the main out to delay only, allowing you to send wet and dry signals to different amps for wide, immersive sounds. And if your amp or switcher has a parallel effects loop, just connect a blocking plug to the direct out to mute the dry sound for effect-only blending.
Hold That Loop
The original DD-3 (and DD-2 before) included a forward-thinking Hold function, which allowed you to capture a sound up to 800 ms long, play it continuously, and jam over the top. Many years later, BOSS further developed this creative concept with the successful Loop Station products, which helped spawn the new musical style of live looping. The DD-3T includes the same Hold function as the DD-3, but it’s been renamed “Short Loop” to reflect today’s common usage.

User questions & answers
Question: | I heard joyo released a new delay pedal, called bbd, do you have in your store? i want the link directly |
Answer: | Hi, yes we have, you can search in our store with joyo R-10 delay pedal, you will find it easily. It is analog delay, Inspired by the classic BBD, NASCAR DELAY delivers warm and natural sound, about 500 ms delay time. |
Question: | what is the difference of digital and analog |
Answer: | It is two different style for the delay depend on your choice, Digital and analog processes the input signal differently. The output of the digital is clearer and sounds more transparent. The simulated output signal-to-noise ratio is lower, but the tone is warmer and the spatial sense is more natural and dynamic. |
Question: | Can it be powered with a 9v |
Answer: | Yes, the power with 9V DC, positive (+ ) barrel and negative (-) center is ok. Thank you for the question, enjoy purchase. |
Question: | Does it come with power supply |

User questions & answers
Question: | What 9v power adapter do you recommend |
Answer: | ISpot is a good basic 9v... If you're using multiple pedals you can usually Daisy chain 2-3 w/o line hum. If running many pedals you may need a true isolated power supply to avoid line noise/him. I will say it's a pretty good little pedal for the price (and easy to squeeze into a tight pedal board) |
Question: | Would anyone know and confirm if this is analog or digital delay. how long is the delay time in ms? what about the reverb, is it spring or hall |
Answer: | delay is advertised as digital, but there is a degrading echo. to me, it sounds more analog. a digital echo will repeat just like the original sound. this pedal doesn't do that. reverb can be set short like a room, or long like a hall. it doesn't have a spring reverb sound. the way the pedal is setup, the delay is fed into the reverb when both are on. it sounds very good for a $60 pedal. |
Question: | Will this add reverb to voice for beater sounding karaoke |
Answer: | Most, if not all, pedals for guitar can be used with a 1/4 " jack microphone. The question left is: Is the microphone powered?, does it need a preamp?, or does it create a strong enough signal? Donner has a less expensive reverb that I will reccomend for karaoke. Just find one decent setting and keep it hidden from the singers. |
Question: | Can you use the reverb and delay at the same time |
Answer: | Yes... Nice little pedal for the price. It also has a separate footswitch for each function - Rev and Delay. I have it on a pedal board alongside Boss and other pedals and it is also nice with a smaller footprint. Only thing is you have to have a 9v power supply for it since it has no internal battery capabilities. I have a couple other Dinner mini pedals too (compressor and a noise gate) and they are pretty good, especially for the price |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this made in China |
Answer: | Everything is made in China. Most of the electronics in your house are made in China. |
Question: | Anyone have a problem with a really loud hum when switched on? Return mine wonder if I should look elsewhere |
Answer: | Yes! Extremely loud hum every time I turn it on. Pretty bummed. |
Question: | works with bass |
Answer: | works great with my native american type flute |
Question: | a genuine analogy delay with new cd2399gp(pt2399) ic installed." this is some weird advertising. its a digital delay? not analog |
Answer: | The cd2399gp chip converts the analog signal to digital as it comes in, implements the delay digitally storing the signal in on board 44k of ram, then converts the digital back to analog on the way out. If properly designed, there is nothing wrong with a digital delay, but the advertising is misleading. The dry signal likely remains analog, only the delay goes through digital processing. Note, the longer the delay, the higher the total harmonic distortion. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is there a way to turn the delay off and just use it as a repeat pedal |
Answer: | If I understand your question correctly, then the answer is no. Delay pedals playback every note you play exactly, but at a delay (this delay is “in addition” to your real-time signal). If you want something that repeats riffs nonstop, so that you can play over it, then I suggest getting a Looper pedal (ie. DITTO LOOPER ~$30). The Ditto plays your riffs in loops up to 5min, and you can add or subtract from the loop at any time. |
Question: | Can I power this with the Visual Sound one spot |
Answer: | Yes you can. I have a carbon copy song with five other pedals being powered by a one spot, and the rest of my board is powered by a voodoo lab supply. I don't hear any noise from using it, and all pedals funtion as they should |
Question: | Like the Boss Delay, does this have some kind of Volume knob or something to lower the delay |
Answer: | That would be the Mix knob... now that increases or decreases the sound of the delayed signal... (the repeats) but it doesn’t increase or decrease the overall signal. Just the delayed repeats. |
Question: | Can anyone tell me how long this would last with a battery |
Answer: | Also, when you unscrew the back, you will have to CAREFULLY, slide your modulation controls to the side, and underneath, the battery bay is located. I have read that with this thing on your chain, on or off, it will suck battery power, and the efx will therefore change over time vs the direct route. |
