14 best guitar sustain pedals

A guitar sustain pedal is not a standard or widely recognized term in the world of guitar effects and amplification. Typically, when guitarists talk about sustain, they are referring to the natural ability of a guitar to produce and sustain a note or sound. Sustain is influenced by various factors, including the guitar's construction, the type of pickups used, and the player's technique.

However, there are several effects and techniques that can be used to enhance or manipulate sustain in electric guitar playing:

  1. Compression: Compression is a common effect used by guitarists to control the dynamic range of their playing. It helps in sustaining notes by reducing the volume of the initial attack and boosting the volume of the decay, resulting in a more consistent and sustained sound.

  2. Distortion and Overdrive: Distortion and overdrive pedals can add sustain to your guitar sound by clipping the waveform, which adds harmonic content and extends the duration of the note.

  3. Feedback: Some guitarists intentionally create feedback by positioning their guitar near their amplifier's speaker. This technique can produce long sustain and unique sound textures.

  4. E-Bow: An E-Bow is a handheld device that uses electromagnetic fields to induce string vibrations, creating an infinite sustain effect. It allows guitarists to sustain notes indefinitely without using their picking hand.

  5. Sustainiac Pickup: Some electric guitars come equipped with Sustainiac pickups, which use electromagnetic technology to sustain notes for extended periods.

  6. Delay and Reverb: Delay and reverb effects can create a sense of sustain by adding reflections and echoes to the guitar sound, making it appear as if the note is lasting longer.

  7. Guitar Synthesizers: Some guitar synthesizers and MIDI controllers offer sustain features that can be used to hold notes indefinitely.

It's important to note that while these effects and techniques can enhance sustain, they may not be referred to as "sustain pedals." Instead, sustain is usually achieved through a combination of different effects, playing techniques, and gear choices to create the desired sound and sustain characteristics.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this optical, vca, or fet compression
Answer: It's said to be a Dynacomp clone which would be a CA3080, which would be a pretty generic op amp circuit, probably jfets on a chip.
Question: What exactly does a compressor pedal do
Answer: It makes soft sounds louder to get to the same volume as louder ones, evening out your playing. Consider how you can hit a low note on a bass that can rattle your teeth but hitting a note on a higher string seems to have little impact. Turn the compressor on and it all is very even. It will also make your tone have more of an expressive attack.
Question: Works great on bass
Answer: I purchased this for my bass-and it totally rocks-super tone and quality for the price-have other pedals that have cost three times the price, and this little boss is worth it!💯👌
Question: Whats the difference between compressor and distortion
Answer: They are totally different effects. Compression evens out your signal. It raises any weak part of your guitars output and squashes the top end to give you a more even balanced sound. This can also give you a bit more sustain. You may not even notice it's on but it does give you nice control of your overall signal to the amp. Distortion gives you a raged raw grunge sound that blurs your notes in chords and adds a hard attack to singular notes. There are also Overdrive pedals that allow you to get the sound of an amp cranked way up but at a lower volume. All are different. Use YouTube to search examples of all three types of pedals.

Answer: no
Question: What are the specific power supply requirements
Answer: It's powered by DC 9V ( Adapter or Battery) with negative centre.
Question: Do you have to use a screwdriver to replace the battery
Answer: No, its a clip-on battery cover.. Doesnt hold on very well. I have it on a velcro pedal board with a power supply but the bit of velcro i put on the battery cover will stay on my board with the cover when i move my the joyos around.

Product description

The slö multi texture reverb allows players to create lush, modulated, sleepy and ambient soundscapes. Stocked with three different algorithms specifically designed to invoke textures for bringing dreams from your subconscious to reality. The toggle switch allows three different reverb modes, dark (Lower octave), Rise (ambient swell) and dream (latching pad), while secondary functions on the switch change between different wave shapes for the modulation on the reverb trail. Combine deep modulation with long washy trails and experience, the slö.

  • Allows players to create lush, modulated, sleepy and ambient soundscapes
  • Dark – add a lower octave to your reverb trail. Here you'll create deep and wide atmospheric sounds and channel nightmarish soundscapes. X knob sets the level of a -1 octave signal that feeds the reverb
  • Rise – this is an auto-swell reverb for beautiful cinematic swells. Don't rush it. Let it breathe and gently wake up. X knob sets the amount of time It takes the reverb to swell in after a note is played. Set Lower for shorter rise times and higher for longer rise times
  • Dream – here is a lush reverb with a latching pad function. Press the sustain switch to latch signal. Experiment with the X knob to add Vibrato over the pad. Press sustain again and pad will decrescendo according to where decay knob is set. X knob sets the depth of Vibrato applied to the reverb trail

User questions & answers

Question: Did anyone have trouble with this walrus slo pedal? mine did not work (i requested a replacement
Answer: Fast shipping and quality is great i would recommend this to anyone looking for a budget pedals.
Question: v battery can i use a battery or do i need a power supply
Answer: I don’t know the exact weight but I do know they are very light. I do love how well they work , quality product
Question: Does it come with a power supply
Answer: I don't know how restrictive your particular set is, but pedals typically break in and become "free-er". You don't want them to be "too free", they should stop after a couple of rotations to make it easy for you to "return" your foot on it, in case it slipped off or if you are trying to pull tricks etc. As long as the rotation is free and the bearings well lubricated, you won't have it "rob you of power".

Walrus Audio Slö

The Slö Multi Texture Reverb allows players to create lush, modulated, sleepy and ambient soundscapes. Stocked with three different algorithms specifically designed to invoke textures for bringing dreams from your subconscious to reality. The toggle switch allows three different reverb modes, Dark (Lower Octave), Rise (Ambient Swell) and Dream (Latching Pad), while secondary functions on the switch change between different wave shapes for the modulation on the reverb trail.

Decay

Adjusts the length of the reverb decay. Go from tight short reverb, at full counter-clockwise, to long drawn out texture at full clockwise.

Filter

Controls the tone of the reverb decay. Each algorithm includes a low-pass filter optimized for that unique sound and the knob controls the filter cutoff frequency. Turn the knob up to open the filter for brighter tones, and down to close the filter resulting in a darker tone.

Mix

Turn counter-clockwise for increased dry signal, and clockwise for more reverb. Use the white line to reference approximate equal parts dry and reverb. Since this point is around 2 o’clock, it gives greater range of adjustment of your mix ratio below the 50/50 point making it easier to dial in the perfect amount of reverb.

X

The X knob changes jobs depending on which algorithm is selected.

Dark – Sets the level of a -1 octave signal that feeds the reverb.

Rise – Sets the amount of time it takes the reverb to swell in after a note is played. Set lower for shorter rise times and higher for longer rise times.

Dream – Sets the depth of vibrato applied to the reverb decay.

Algorithm Switch

Reverb Modes:

  • Dark – Add a lower octave to your reverb trail.
  • Rise – Auto-swell reverb for beautiful cinematic swells.
  • Dream – Lush reverb with a latching pad function.

Modulation Waves:

  • Sine – Smooth and even pitch up and down modulation.
  • Warp – Asymmetric pitch up modulation similar to a warped record.
  • Sink – Asymmetric pitch down modulation for sinking detune similar to a Bigsby.

Depth

Controls the amount of modulation applied to the reverb decay. Go from no modulation, to nightmare inducing pitch bending at high settings.

Secondary Function:

Rate - Controls the speed of the modulation applied to the reverb decay.

Bypass

Turns the effect on and off. It also features our smart bypass switching. When the switch is in off position, press and hold to temporarily activate the effect to add a moment of reverb texture. Releasing the switch turns the effect off, and fades it out. To access the secondary functions, with the pedal engaged, hold down the bypass switch and use the toggle to select the desired wave shape, and the depth knob to set the desired rate. The pedal remembers the wave shape and rate settings for the current algorithm until the next time they are modified. The pedal also maintains the algorithm and depth setting when modifying secondary functions.

Trails Mode:

In trails mode, when you turn the pedal off, the reverb decay dies off naturally. In no trails mode, the decay is abruptly cut off when you turn the pedal off. To toggle between either mode, hold down the bypass switch for 1 second while applying power to the pedal. Unplug power and repeat to toggle to the other mode.

Sustain

When pressed, the decay switch ramps up the reverb trail to maximum creating long dreamy reverb trail and then ramps back down to the decay knob setting when released. In the “Dream” algorithm, the sustain switch is latching. Press it once to capture and sustain the current reverb decay for extremely long pad-like sounds. Press it again to let the reverb trail taper off, based on the position of the decay knob.

About Walrus Audio

Walrus Audio is a collective of artists, musicians and engineers attempting to find the balance between art and performance in sound manipulation. Throughout the years we have been inspired by sounds created by our favorite companies: the perfect breakup on an overdrive; a thick, punchy distortion; an endlessly sustained reverb; a self-oscillating delay. We had to give it a shot. Through many months of late night breadboarding sessions, circuit problem-solving, and sonic tweaking we have come up with a range of guitar pedals as versatile as they are functional.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used on a Bass guitar
Answer: Yes it can! I just got mine today and tried it out on an Epiphone EB-0 bass which took that super fat bass sound and enhanced the attack, smoothed out the dynamics and gave a nice overall boost to the sound. I had similar results with an Ibanez 5 string that has passive single coil pickups. I was originally looking at a couple other compressors that have a blend knob on them. This comp was so inexpensive I figured I would try it anyway and if I did't like it I wouldn't be out much money. Well it turns out I really like this pedal and I don't need one with a blend because this one does the job in a transparent sort of way that I like. With all knobs at the 12 o'clock position and the treble switch in the up position this little guy works well for my bass sound. The size is nice too.
Question: I'm fairly new to compressors. Will this pedal help with sustain on clean slide playing? (Live not studio
Answer: without a doubt YES! Listen to any of the first five or so Little Feat albums. That is Lowell George on electric slide. His signature tone used fairly heavy compression to cop wonderful clean sustain. I put my compressor first in my signal chain for the same reason. It also sweetens my overdriven solos. I would feel naked without compression in my rig.
Question: anyone compare this with joyo and mooer compressors? thanks
Answer: I have not compared to other compressor pedals, but for the price it is a decent little pedal with noticeable sustain/compression. I do find that main knob, the "compression" control, works well but the "level" control is very sensitive. I have to keep mine down below 10 or 11 o'clock, otherwise it just gets very loud. The toggle switch is also effective between normal and treble for a brighter tone. As for the "tone" control, this also needs to be fine tuned as anything past 12 o clock gets very bright, unless that's what you're aiming for.
Question: anyone compare this to the behringer compressor
Answer: I haven't compared this to the Behringer compressor but I have compared it to a MXR Dyna comp. The Behringer pedals I've had sounded good but were not very well made and crapped out on me after not much use. The Donner is a well built pedal and has a wide range of compression for the price. It is also a pretty quiet compressor compared to the Dyna Comp. I have a few of the smaller footprint pedals (Moore and Ibanez) and this one is built like a tank. For $40 it is a good purchase.

Compressor/Sustainer CS400

By pumping up quieter notes and bringing down the louder ones, this little magic box packages your sound into one velvety-smooth and consistent volume. With the CS400 in your pedalboard – you’ll enjoy virtually-endless sustain and ultra-stable dynamics!

What is a Compressor?

Dynamics play an important role in music; they help to convey emotion, whether it’s a sweet and sultry blues solo – or the relentless gallop of molten metal. But uncontrolled dynamics can take all your best intentions and turn them into so much well mush. That’s where compression comes to the rescue – softening loud sounds, and boosting low signal levels that often get lost in the mix. So the primary function of a compressor is to make every note the same volume level. The resulting compressed signal creates a much more dense, impactful sound, with richness and room for your subtle nuances coming through – like never before.

Balancing Act

Ever notice how some strings on your guitar or bass sound louder than others? This is partly due to physics; strings with lower mass just don’t put out as much volume as the heavier ones. When used properly, a compressor makes all of the strings the same volume. Compressors are also great for slap-style bass players, making thumb slaps, string pulls and muted notes all the same volume, for an extremely percussive effect.

Easy to Operate

You can dial in the right amount of compression using the dedicated Attack and Sustain dials. The Level control allows you to set the output to subtle, or engage a monster volume boost. Tone lets you add exactly the right level of highs. From clean, snappy country leads to rock solos that scream for eons, the CS400 is built to make your sound the center of attention. The bright stays LED tells you when the CS400 is on, and the top-quality on/off switch maintains outstanding signal integrity in bypass mode. You can power this scene-stealer with either a 9 V battery or our PSU-SB DC power supply (not included).

Sound Value

Push the good stuff to center stage with the Compressor/Sustainer CS400. This pedal smoothes out volume peaks and provides endless sustain with ultra-stable dynamics via the dedicated Sustain, Level and Attack time controls – for the ultimate in sound shaping. Try the CS400 at your local authorized dealer today, or grab one online – and get your 'smooth' on!

User questions & answers

Question: what is the material? kind of concern for the durable
Answer: Yes. The secondary functions did not work on mine. I contacted Walrus and they insisted that I pay the shipping in order for them to repair it. Seems like a common defect on this pedal, so bad quality control and obnoxious customer service on the part of Walrus. Pedal went straight back to the seller (not amazon) who probably sold it to someone else.
Question: Hello, i want to know if any battery included in the package. How long does battery work
Answer: You need a power supply for sure...
Question: any videos about the device
Answer: It does not, But you can power it with a snark power supply for fairly cheap and it will work just fine.
Question: How many batteries do you have
Answer: More purple. That’s why I sent mine back though. I needed it to be more of the magenta. Nice quality however. Wish they matched my resto-mod mongoose Mtb

  • Guitar Pedal
  • Boss

User questions & answers

Question: Will this pedal reduce any unwanted noise coming out of the amp
Answer: No, if anything it will add noise. There's always gonna be a little bit of noise from an amp... maybe try a noise gate or Humbucker, or noiseless pickups. Good luck
Question: Will this sustain pinch harmonics so I can do a dive bomb
Answer: It should - it definitely extends the sustain and harmonics on my guitars, using it through a Fender Twin Reverb or an old Peavy with a Marshall head. However, that is not really my style of playing (the dive bombs), so I can't give you a definitive answer. It will also depend on your amp setup and the guitar. What I can say is that this box does thin the sound a little, making it more sterile.
Question: Will this sound plesant on an acoustic guitar
Answer: Not designed or used with acoustic instruments. Certainly not pleasant. Its a rock sound like Carlos Santana sustained notes in his solos.
Question: I have overdrive, distortion, & metal zone pedals in front of amp & eq, chorus, & delay pedals in the effects loop. where should i place the cs
Answer: You're going to want to have the compressor going into the front of the amp. As far as where you place it in your chain depends on what you're trying to get out of you cs-3. The best thing to do is experiment around with it. Try placing it at the beginning or end of your pedal chain, or later in the chain between , before, or after your distortion pedals, The placement can really change your tone drastically.

Gamechanger Audio Plus Sustain Pedal

Gamechanger Audio

Based on 35 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The PLUS pedal is a new kind of audio processing engine that offers piano style sustain for electric guitars and all other melodic instruments. This is more than just a stompbox, it is a vast extension of your instrument that bridges the gap between rhythm and lead playing and lets players explore new territories.

The PLUS pedal uses a proprietary real time audio sampling algorithm to generate long, smooth layers of sustain out of any audio input signal. Compared to other freeze effects (based on granular synthesis or reverb engines) the PLUS Pedal fully preserves the core sound of your instrument, including picking dynamics, tone and pickup settings, vibrato, harmonics and other nuances. Most importantly, the PLUS Pedal has no limitations in terms of polyphony or timbre. You can use it with complex chords, as well as with single notes on a mono synthesizer.

The PLUS pedal offers many different uses. Accompany your solos with sustaining chords. Build rich ambient textures and harmonically evolving soundscapes. With a flip of a switch and quick knob adjustments the PLUS turns into an ambient machine. Experimentation with other effects in the PLUS pedals FX loop opens up endless possibilities of sound sculpting.

The sturdy brass piano-style foot pedal becomes part of your instrument. The sensation of playing the PLUS compares to a real piano or a wah-wah pedal. From jazz-voice leading to heavy post-rock drones the Plus Pedal allows the guitarist to do more with the instrument. A useful tool in any context like live performances, songwriting and arrangement, creating drones, ambient soundscapes, cinematic sound effects, and much more.

It is also a fantastic tool for aural training and practicing improvisation. Instead of thinking about which scale shape fits over what changes. The PLUS Pedal focuses all of your attention on listening to the tonal relationships between the chord and the notes you play on top.

  • The PLUS Pedal is a piano style sustain pedal for guitars and all other melodic instruments. It samples, sustains and layers any melodic sound made by any instrument.
  • It allows to compose otherwise impossible song arrangements using just one instrument.
  • Create lush layered soundscapes and ambiances without multi-effect setups.
  • Transform chords into synth-like pads and beautiful textures.
  • Power supply is not included. The PLUS Pedal uses standard 9 V DC center negative pedal power supply.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it come with a power supply
Answer: I don't know or have ever tried or used that joyo pedal. All I know is about this pedal, and as I say in my review it does the job. It gives me enough sustain and compression up to about 1:00 in the sustain button. After that is a little noisy. The Behringer pedal gives you plenty for your money including tone and level which can be used to boost the signal and get better response from tube ampifiers.
Question: Did you find this peddle a game changer? Intriguing concept, but there are no review posted yet
Answer: The CS400 is a clone of the Boss CS-3, wheras the DC-9 is a clone of the MXR Dynacomp (I believe). IMHO this pedal is better for aggressive metal. The DC9 is simply a compressor- it's function is to smooth out the signal so everything is sort of the same volume. The CS400 does this, but also increases sustain-
Question: Is the wet pedal included
Answer: Of course it will!!,any effect will work if you plug your keyboard in a speaker or Amplifier,I don't think this is a pedal for keyboards, your better off getting a multi effects pedal for either guitar or bass would probably be better, look at the Zoom Gnx or something,it's on Amazon, just type ZoomEffects in search and get one with a foot controller,or expression pedal,on multi effects pedals, you get 100 sounds,an seeing your goin keyboard,Bass effects would be more useful as the synthesiser sounds and modulation effects would be Awesome,Some phaser, flanger echo a bit of tremolo or stereo panning and all have SEVERAL Sustainers!,you can go from under $80,up too $2000!,but any zoom or korg or digitech Rp 350 or Rp 500 are great value!,you'll even get a studio with it and turn your keyboard into a full on synth!!,so MULTI EFFECTS PEDAL WITH DXORESSION PEDAL,and you'll find a keyboard sustainer there cheap as any way!,but get a digitech!,can't go wrong, and the drum machine is awesome!!
Question: what is the learning curve on this pedal
Answer: amp side is left - guitar side is right, if you have power - you should be good... check that the power supply works on other pedals (with standard 9v power, of course) try a 9v battery as well... if none of the above works, you may have got a "bad one" (happens pretty often with Behringer products, not the best quality control, but they are CHEAP!) - send it back to Behringer and get them to send you a new one.

User questions & answers

Question: Does anyone have experience using this with a bass guitar

JHS Whitey Tighty

JHS Pedals is proud to present the Whitey Tighty compressor, our take on the classic effect that no one may ever know is on, but when it’s off you feel like your pants are down. This pedal is as simple as it gets while never getting in the way. At only 1”x3”, you’ll save so much space on your rig that you’ll be able to add to your wardrobe of effects with ease. With the ability to blend in compression and clean signal, you’ll be able to dial in the perfect sound that keeps everything in place.

Controls

The Whitey Tighty is a FET compressor that has three simple controls: Volume, Compression, and Blend. The Volume control gives you the ability to set your volume at unity gain or slightly boosted to make up for any perceived loss from the compression. The Compression knob controls the amount of compression for everything from a subtle smoothing of your tone to a pleasing squash that’s perfect for country, blues, pop, and rock. Use the Blend knob to dial in the right amount of clean tone along with your compressed signal. This allows you to retain some of the natural feel of your clean tone while giving you the studio-quality compression that brings your sound to the next level.

About JHS Pedals

JHS Pedals is the result of Josh Scott’s desire to build quality effects pedals that stand out in an over-saturated market. Started in early 2007 by way of a DIY repair to a Boss Blues Driver, JHS Pedals has evolved into an effects pedal company recognized world-wide. Josh’s years of touring and session work along with eventual electronics tinkering bring the experience and knowledge of what musicians need and want in their rigs, and that is one of the core values that JHS was built upon.

With a complete electric guitar, bass guitar, utility, and Mod Shop, JHS Pedals offers one of the broadest lines of effects on the market today. We value and commit to designing, populating, and assembling pedals that sound excellent, are easy to use, and work correctly.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the warranty
Answer: No, the pedal doesn't include a power supply but you can buy the bundle at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TK2TZ2T.
Question: Does this pedal have any noise his or hum when turned up
Answer: I did not find it a game changer. For me I use it as a combination of a reverb and looper pedal that can be used to have very specific control over your reverb (looping a sound or chord). It can be useful at doing that and you can create some really cool sounds (or in my case I almost always use it to add subtle controlled reverb) but I wouldn't call it a game changer. However, it could be for a wet/dry rig. Haven't tried it in that way yet, but having a fine grain control of wet/dry reverb could be amazing.
Question: How many decibels of boost does this pedal provide
Answer: No, this listing contains PLUS Sustain Pedal. You can get the WET Footswitch at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JY62H26.
Question: Will this work for a 5 string bass too
Answer: If you don't care about the price and need the best freeze pedal in the world right now, this's definitely for you . Good for solo performance (especially songs which doesn't have so many changes) Good for experimenting, ambient or noise music

Wampler Mini Ego Compressor

The Mini Ego Compressor brings a new level of control to your playing level. It will bring quiet parts up and loud parts down with a natural feel like a great tube amp being pushed hard. It is based on the original Ego, but it features tone and attack switches to tweak your tone to a standard of a pedal twice its size. You can also blend in your original signal so you can get the benefits of a great compressor with the option to remove the squash at the front by bringing the bypassed signal in.

Blend

At about noon on the Blend knob, the compressed signal and the (enhanced, boosted, and slightly warmed) clean signal are even in level. Because the signals are in parallel inside the pedal before mixing down to mono at the output, the Blend control acts as a mixer knob. At 50/50, your clean signal's natural note attack is almost unaffected by the Ego Compressor, but once the clean signal naturally fades, the Ego Compressor's compressed signal seamlessly fills in the gaps. This is a process no ear will hear because it's perfectly even and smooth, and the end result is all the benefits of a great compressor but a real, authentic transient.

Volume

This control adjusts the output level of the Mini Ego Compressor. There's plenty of volume on tap, so whether you want to go farther than your input level or just make sure it can do unity volume (the same level of signal going out as you feed it, when active), you're covered. The Sustain and Blend controls will have an effect on the total output volume, so you're probably better off waiting to adjust the Volume until you've dialed in the other controls. Re-adjustment might be necessary if you get it to the desired level and still need to tweak the sound.

Sustain

Sustain controls how hard the Ego Compressor works to maintain the signal within its compression threshold. Higher sustain settings will let your notes go on for a very long time, but be careful, because higher sustain settings also raise the noise floor. If you are running your compressor after overdrive or distortion, you will want to pay close attention to the Sustain knob and maybe back off of it quite a bit so as not to raise the amount of noise to unbearable levels. The Ego Compressor is quiet, by compressor standards, but when the whole point of a pedal is to take a signal, even it out, and make the quiet parts louder and the loud parts quieter, you can expect added noise as part of the process.

Classic Country Squash

Perfect for chickin' pickin'. This setting adds some extra cluck to your pluck.

Smooth Overtunes

Your great tone, but with an added smoothness and clarity that makes your guitar come alive.

Get Funky

You'll be conjuring a Disco ball with these settings.

Clean, Soaring Boost

A focused boost for your amp to fatten up your tone and pop out in the mix.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used for a bass as well
Answer: Yes, but it's not optimal for bass. A bass compressor would be a better choice.
Question: Does the 9 volt fit inside the pedal like other pedals
Answer: It does not, there is no internal compartment for a battery, like another stated you have to plug the adapter that comes with it into the 9V DC jack on the side of the pedal, the battery hangs outside of it.
