13 best compression pedals

Compression pedals are a type of guitar effect pedal used by guitarists to apply compression to their guitar signal. These pedals are a crucial part of many guitarists' pedalboards, as they help control the dynamic range of the guitar's output, resulting in a more consistent and balanced sound. Here's what you should know about compression pedals:

  1. Compression Function: A compression pedal works by reducing the dynamic range of the guitar signal. It attenuates the louder peaks of the signal while boosting the quieter portions, effectively making the volume levels more consistent.

  2. Threshold Control: Most compression pedals have a threshold control knob. This knob sets the level at which compression starts to take effect.Signals above this threshold are compressed, while signals below it remain unaffected.

  3. Ratio Control: The ratio control on a compression pedal determines the degree of compression applied to the signal. Common ratio settings include 4:1, 8:1, or even higher. A higher ratio means more compression, resulting in a more even and sustained sound.

  4. Attack Control: The attack control adjusts how quickly the compressor responds to peaks in the guitar signal. A fast attack time can clamp down on transient peaks, providing more sustain and control, while a slower attack time lets some transients through for a more natural sound.

  5. Release Control: The release control sets the time it takes for the compressor to stop compressing the signal after it falls below the threshold. A shorter release time can result in a more noticeable compression effect, while a longer release time can provide a smoother, less audible compression.

  6. Output (Make-up Gain) Control: Compression can reduce the overall volume of the guitar signal. The output control, also known as make-up gain, allows the guitarist to boost the compressed signal to match the desired output level.

  7. Knee Control: Some compression pedals have a knee control, which determines how gradually or abruptly the compression engages as the signal crosses the threshold. A "hard knee" engages compression suddenly, while a "soft knee" does so more gradually.

  8. Sustain Enhancement: Compression pedals are often used to enhance the sustain of guitar notes, making them ring out longer. This can be particularly useful for lead guitar solos.

  9. Noise Reduction: Compression pedals can help reduce the noise level in the guitar signal by attenuating unwanted noise during quiet moments, such as between guitar chords or notes.

  10. Placement in the Signal Chain: Compression pedals can be placed at various points in the guitar signal chain, depending on the desired effect. They can go before or after other effects, and their placement can significantly impact the overall sound.

  11. Versatility: Many compression pedals offer a range of controls, allowing guitarists to tailor the compression effect to their specific preferences and playing style.

In summary, compression pedals are essential tools for guitarists, helping them control the dynamics of their playing and achieve a more consistent and balanced sound. These pedals are widely used in various musical genres and are a valuable addition to any guitarist's rig.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used on a Bass guitar
Answer: Yes it can! I just got mine today and tried it out on an Epiphone EB-0 bass which took that super fat bass sound and enhanced the attack, smoothed out the dynamics and gave a nice overall boost to the sound. I had similar results with an Ibanez 5 string that has passive single coil pickups. I was originally looking at a couple other compressors that have a blend knob on them. This comp was so inexpensive I figured I would try it anyway and if I did't like it I wouldn't be out much money. Well it turns out I really like this pedal and I don't need one with a blend because this one does the job in a transparent sort of way that I like. With all knobs at the 12 o'clock position and the treble switch in the up position this little guy works well for my bass sound. The size is nice too.
Question: I'm fairly new to compressors. Will this pedal help with sustain on clean slide playing? (Live not studio
Answer: without a doubt YES! Listen to any of the first five or so Little Feat albums. That is Lowell George on electric slide. His signature tone used fairly heavy compression to cop wonderful clean sustain. I put my compressor first in my signal chain for the same reason. It also sweetens my overdriven solos. I would feel naked without compression in my rig.
Question: anyone compare this with joyo and mooer compressors? thanks
Answer: I have not compared to other compressor pedals, but for the price it is a decent little pedal with noticeable sustain/compression. I do find that main knob, the "compression" control, works well but the "level" control is very sensitive. I have to keep mine down below 10 or 11 o'clock, otherwise it just gets very loud. The toggle switch is also effective between normal and treble for a brighter tone. As for the "tone" control, this also needs to be fine tuned as anything past 12 o clock gets very bright, unless that's what you're aiming for.
Question: anyone compare this to the behringer compressor
Answer: I haven't compared this to the Behringer compressor but I have compared it to a MXR Dyna comp. The Behringer pedals I've had sounded good but were not very well made and crapped out on me after not much use. The Donner is a well built pedal and has a wide range of compression for the price. It is also a pretty quiet compressor compared to the Dyna Comp. I have a few of the smaller footprint pedals (Moore and Ibanez) and this one is built like a tank. For $40 it is a good purchase.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this pedal reduce any unwanted noise coming out of the amp
Answer: No, if anything it will add noise. There's always gonna be a little bit of noise from an amp... maybe try a noise gate or Humbucker, or noiseless pickups. Good luck
Question: Will this sustain pinch harmonics so I can do a dive bomb
Answer: It should - it definitely extends the sustain and harmonics on my guitars, using it through a Fender Twin Reverb or an old Peavy with a Marshall head. However, that is not really my style of playing (the dive bombs), so I can't give you a definitive answer. It will also depend on your amp setup and the guitar. What I can say is that this box does thin the sound a little, making it more sterile.
Question: Will this sound plesant on an acoustic guitar
Answer: Not designed or used with acoustic instruments. Certainly not pleasant. Its a rock sound like Carlos Santana sustained notes in his solos.
Question: I have overdrive, distortion, & metal zone pedals in front of amp & eq, chorus, & delay pedals in the effects loop. where should i place the cs
Answer: You're going to want to have the compressor going into the front of the amp. As far as where you place it in your chain depends on what you're trying to get out of you cs-3. The best thing to do is experiment around with it. Try placing it at the beginning or end of your pedal chain, or later in the chain between , before, or after your distortion pedals, The placement can really change your tone drastically.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this optical, vca, or fet compression
Answer: It's said to be a Dynacomp clone which would be a CA3080, which would be a pretty generic op amp circuit, probably jfets on a chip.
Question: What exactly does a compressor pedal do
Answer: It makes soft sounds louder to get to the same volume as louder ones, evening out your playing. Consider how you can hit a low note on a bass that can rattle your teeth but hitting a note on a higher string seems to have little impact. Turn the compressor on and it all is very even. It will also make your tone have more of an expressive attack.
Question: Works great on bass
Answer: I purchased this for my bass-and it totally rocks-super tone and quality for the price-have other pedals that have cost three times the price, and this little boss is worth it!💯👌
Question: Whats the difference between compressor and distortion
Answer: They are totally different effects. Compression evens out your signal. It raises any weak part of your guitars output and squashes the top end to give you a more even balanced sound. This can also give you a bit more sustain. You may not even notice it's on but it does give you nice control of your overall signal to the amp. Distortion gives you a raged raw grunge sound that blurs your notes in chords and adds a hard attack to singular notes. There are also Overdrive pedals that allow you to get the sound of an amp cranked way up but at a lower volume. All are different. Use YouTube to search examples of all three types of pedals.

Orange Kongpressor

The Kongpressor is an analogue Class A compression pedal which adds an organic three dimensional quality to any rig. The pedal takes its inspiration from some of the world’s most iconic vintage optical studio units, employing a re-issue of the famous vactrol VTL5C3 optocoupler that was responsible for the sound heard on countless hit records.

At lower compression levels the Kongpressor’s effect is transparent but somehow fattening. It adds mojo and a glossy sheen to your core tone that you’ll truly miss when it’s bypassed. Even at extreme settings, the tone always remains musical with great feel under the fingers.

With controls for attack and release time, the Kongpressor can be tweaked to fine tune the transients and the bloom. We worked hard to make these parameters as forgiving as possible whilst still allowing players full control over the compression response. The pedal’s internal charge pump doubles the headroom of the unit, so however the dials are set, the compression tracks seamlessly and remains clean across its range. There’s also an active treble control for adding in extra chime and jangle, making the compression even more transparent. So whether you are new to compression or a seasoned studio user, it’s impossible to get a bad sound from this comp.

Of course it’s outstanding for crystal clean country pickin’, but the Kongpressor also maintains the bottom end that seems to gets lost in many compression pedals. This means it behaves impeccably with overdrive pedals or the lead channel of your amplifier, adding fullness and sustain.

Optical Class A Compression

The Kongpressor’s analogue, Class A design makes for very natural sounding compression. The vintage-inspired optical circuit adds extra depth your guitar or bass tone, making it seem ‘larger than life’.

The attack and release times can be adjusted to taste allowing for fine tuning of the bloom and perceived plectrum gauge. Faster attack times will react to the front of the note faster, while slower attack times will add punch to the sound as the compression reacts slower on the transient. Fast release times will give more perceived clean volume along with a more transparent compression. Slower release times will yield more compression and a slower, mellower bloom. With any attack or release setting, the Kongpressor has a satisfying, springy playing response under the fingers.

12dB Clean Boost

With up to 12dB of clean gain available on the Volume control, the Kongpressor works brilliantly as a transparent clean boost pedal, but with a little extra ‘something’. With the compression turned up, your lead lines will cut through the band with plenty of fat, singing sustain.

Internal Charge Pump

Like all Orange pedals, the Kongpressor features an internal charge pump which doubles the operating voltage of the pedal to 18V. This has the effect of drastically increasing the headroom for super clean compression. The Kongpressor can be powered by 9V battery or standard DC adapter, or for even more output can also run on 12V DC.

Transparent Buffered Bypass

The Kongpressor’s bypass features an ultra-linear buffer which retains your guitar’s upper harmonic content when the pedal is switched off. Maintain tonal integrity even with long cable runs and large pedalboards.

Ade Emsley - Technical Director at Orange

"One of the things I didn’t like about some of the existing compressors out there was the fact that the release bloom was not smooth. The bloom is one of the main things that give a compressor it’s character and playing appeal. I found this to be the case with any of the FET compressors I tried and also some opto comps.

I designed the kongpressor using a special floating sidechain design that I had not seen used before so the next hurdle was to find someone who could make a fully RoHS compliant optocoupler as I knew this was the method I wanted to use. This took two years!

The result is a very smooth and transparent compressor that can take massive signals at the input and still remain clean. You can even hang the kongpressor out of a mixing desk or place it after a mic pre for studio use."

    Wampler Mini Ego Compressor

The Mini Ego Compressor brings a new level of control to your playing level. It will bring quiet parts up and loud parts down with a natural feel like a great tube amp being pushed hard. It is based on the original Ego, but it features tone and attack switches to tweak your tone to a standard of a pedal twice its size. You can also blend in your original signal so you can get the benefits of a great compressor with the option to remove the squash at the front by bringing the bypassed signal in.

    Blend

At about noon on the Blend knob, the compressed signal and the (enhanced, boosted, and slightly warmed) clean signal are even in level. Because the signals are in parallel inside the pedal before mixing down to mono at the output, the Blend control acts as a mixer knob. At 50/50, your clean signal's natural note attack is almost unaffected by the Ego Compressor, but once the clean signal naturally fades, the Ego Compressor's compressed signal seamlessly fills in the gaps. This is a process no ear will hear because it's perfectly even and smooth, and the end result is all the benefits of a great compressor but a real, authentic transient.

    Volume

This control adjusts the output level of the Mini Ego Compressor. There's plenty of volume on tap, so whether you want to go farther than your input level or just make sure it can do unity volume (the same level of signal going out as you feed it, when active), you're covered. The Sustain and Blend controls will have an effect on the total output volume, so you're probably better off waiting to adjust the Volume until you've dialed in the other controls. Re-adjustment might be necessary if you get it to the desired level and still need to tweak the sound.

    Sustain

Sustain controls how hard the Ego Compressor works to maintain the signal within its compression threshold. Higher sustain settings will let your notes go on for a very long time, but be careful, because higher sustain settings also raise the noise floor. If you are running your compressor after overdrive or distortion, you will want to pay close attention to the Sustain knob and maybe back off of it quite a bit so as not to raise the amount of noise to unbearable levels. The Ego Compressor is quiet, by compressor standards, but when the whole point of a pedal is to take a signal, even it out, and make the quiet parts louder and the loud parts quieter, you can expect added noise as part of the process.

    Classic Country Squash

Perfect for chickin' pickin'. This setting adds some extra cluck to your pluck.

    Smooth Overtunes

Your great tone, but with an added smoothness and clarity that makes your guitar come alive.

    Get Funky

You'll be conjuring a Disco ball with these settings.

    Clean, Soaring Boost

A focused boost for your amp to fatten up your tone and pop out in the mix.
