12 best boss compressor pedals

Boss compressor pedals are musical effects pedals designed for electric guitarists and other musicians. These pedals are part of the larger category of guitar effects and are specifically used to shape and control the dynamic range of a guitar's signal. Here's what you should know about Boss compressor pedals:

  1. Dynamic Range Control: Compressor pedals, including those by Boss, are used to control the dynamic range of the guitar signal. They work by reducing the volume of loud sounds and boosting the volume of softer sounds. This helps in achieving a more consistent and even sound output, which can be particularly useful for clean guitar playing or for taming the dynamics of distorted guitar tones.

  2. Sustain Enhancement: Compressor pedals can enhance sustain by maintaining a consistent signal level, allowing notes and chords to ring out longer and more smoothly. This can be beneficial for creating expressive lead guitar tones.

  3. Attack Control: Many Boss compressor pedals provide an attack control feature, which allows you to adjust how quickly the compressor responds to the initial attack of the guitar note. This can affect the transient characteristics of the sound.

  4. Threshold and Ratio Controls: Boss compressor pedals typically offer threshold and ratio controls. The threshold determines the level at which compression begins to take effect, while the ratio controls how much the signal is compressed once it exceeds the threshold.

  5. Level and Tone Controls: These pedals often include level and tone controls to adjust the output volume and shape the overall tonal characteristics of the compressed signal.

  6. LED Indicator: Boss pedals are known for their durable construction, and they often feature an LED indicator to show when the pedal is engaged.

  7. Versatility: Boss compressor pedals are suitable for various musical styles and genres, from clean country picking to heavy rock distortion. They can be used with electric guitars and bass guitars alike.

  8. Compatibility: These pedals are designed to work seamlessly with other guitar effects pedals, allowing you to build a customized effects chain to achieve your desired sound.

  9. Powered by 9V Battery or AC Adapter: Boss compressor pedals can be powered by a 9-volt battery or an AC adapter, providing flexibility for different performance situations.

Boss is a well-regarded manufacturer of guitar effects pedals, known for its reliability and durability.Their compressor pedals are used by guitarists worldwide to shape their sound and add dynamics to their playing. Whether you're looking to smooth out your clean tones, enhance sustain, or control the dynamics of your distorted sound, a Boss compressor pedal can be a valuable addition to your pedalboard.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this pedal reduce any unwanted noise coming out of the amp
Answer: No, if anything it will add noise. There's always gonna be a little bit of noise from an amp... maybe try a noise gate or Humbucker, or noiseless pickups. Good luck
Question: Will this sustain pinch harmonics so I can do a dive bomb
Answer: It should - it definitely extends the sustain and harmonics on my guitars, using it through a Fender Twin Reverb or an old Peavy with a Marshall head. However, that is not really my style of playing (the dive bombs), so I can't give you a definitive answer. It will also depend on your amp setup and the guitar. What I can say is that this box does thin the sound a little, making it more sterile.
Question: Will this sound plesant on an acoustic guitar
Answer: Not designed or used with acoustic instruments. Certainly not pleasant. Its a rock sound like Carlos Santana sustained notes in his solos.
Question: I have overdrive, distortion, & metal zone pedals in front of amp & eq, chorus, & delay pedals in the effects loop. where should i place the cs
Answer: You're going to want to have the compressor going into the front of the amp. As far as where you place it in your chain depends on what you're trying to get out of you cs-3. The best thing to do is experiment around with it. Try placing it at the beginning or end of your pedal chain, or later in the chain between , before, or after your distortion pedals, The placement can really change your tone drastically.

  • Model# GEB7

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a significant difference between this and the Boss GE 7 for guitar
Answer: No, the GEQ-215 is not equipped with an input voltage selector switch. In order for this unit to function in regions with 220V circuitry, a third party step down transformer to 110V AC 60 Hz must be used.
Question: does this pedal increase the noise level
Answer: Given that it's rack-mountable and runs on 120 VAC, I'd say it's intended use is neither: live sound (club, church...) reinforcement. But it could also be used at home. The form factor, plus the AC requirement would make use in a vehicle difficult!
Question: Parent of a bass player, he wants a pedal for looping and distortion. Does this pedal do that
Answer: Yes
Question: does the power supply come with the pedel
Answer: Hi, the 50hz knob will affect the sub response. If you have any other questions feel free to contact our tech support at (323)-231-3525 or you can also email us at [email protected]. Thank You.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this pedal help with sustain
Answer: It can increase sustain with the proper settings. I am using it to increase note length with my bass micro synth and the sustain of the notes has more than doubled. It worked better than the bass preacher, in my opinion.
Question: Will this help keep the volume level when going from distorted to clean or switching any other pedals on/off
Answer: In a way yes. I usually plug my bass into the compressor first, and then I go through my distortion. I really think you could get the result that you are looking for by simply adjusting the volume knob on your distortion. But I guess to a certain point you could also compress it after the distortion. Mind you that you will have to find a balanced volume no matter which way you go at it. The clean and distorted tones will be different, so even though they may still be the same volume they may not sound exactly the same in "loudness". Just find a balance that you like. But I would suggest you try adjusting the volume knob on your distortion pedal or amp before buying this. I don't really think that is what this pedal is made for although I am not saying you couldn't experiment with it and try.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this optical, vca, or fet compression
Answer: It's said to be a Dynacomp clone which would be a CA3080, which would be a pretty generic op amp circuit, probably jfets on a chip.
Question: What exactly does a compressor pedal do
Answer: It makes soft sounds louder to get to the same volume as louder ones, evening out your playing. Consider how you can hit a low note on a bass that can rattle your teeth but hitting a note on a higher string seems to have little impact. Turn the compressor on and it all is very even. It will also make your tone have more of an expressive attack.
Question: Works great on bass
Answer: I purchased this for my bass-and it totally rocks-super tone and quality for the price-have other pedals that have cost three times the price, and this little boss is worth it!💯👌
Question: Whats the difference between compressor and distortion
Answer: They are totally different effects. Compression evens out your signal. It raises any weak part of your guitars output and squashes the top end to give you a more even balanced sound. This can also give you a bit more sustain. You may not even notice it's on but it does give you nice control of your overall signal to the amp. Distortion gives you a raged raw grunge sound that blurs your notes in chords and adds a hard attack to singular notes. There are also Overdrive pedals that allow you to get the sound of an amp cranked way up but at a lower volume. All are different. Use YouTube to search examples of all three types of pedals.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it worth paying the extra $50 to get this instead of the boss odb-3 pedal
Answer: I would recommend finding what drive sound you would like to go after. This one has a built in DI. I bought the BB-1X because it had best of both worlds of drive and having the DI. I wanted to have another option to connect to the house system just in case an XLR direct output connection is not an option. When connected, you can choose how you want to blend the drive with both. Hope this helps!

BC-1X Bass Comp Pedal

Equipped with cutting-edge BOSS technology, the BC-1X Bass Comp performs far beyond the capabilities of conventional bass compressor pedals. This premium stompbox features pro-level multiband compression controlled by intelligent circuitry, making it simple to dial in natural sounds for any playing style. The advanced design responds to different dynamics and registers to apply the perfect amount of compression in real time, ensuring that your tone never gets over-squeezed or muddy. Transparent, powerful, and easy to use, the BC-1X is a must-have tool that delivers studio-quality punch and precision for dynamic players.

Advanced Technology for Natural Sound

Compression is an indispensable tool for the modern bassist. While there are many bass compressor pedals available, the BC-1X stands alone as a completely unique product. Unlike conventional units that compress the fundamental tone and muffle the sound, the advanced BOSS MDP tech in the BC-1X provides perfectly natural compression that never overwhelms the character of your instrument. Every nuance is captured and processed accurately, even with aggressive compressor settings. In every register your sound is true, allowing you to put your heart into playing without fussing with different settings for every song or style.

Infinite Tonal Possibilities with Simple Controls

While normal compressors can be difficult to dial in just right, the BC-1X takes all the guesswork out of getting great sound. Hidden behind the pedal’s simple four-knob interface is a complex multiband processor with numerous interlocking parameters. As you turn the knobs, many parameters are adjusted at once, enabling a wide range of tone shaping with minimal effort. And thanks to the intelligent tech inside, you’ll always achieve perfect sounds at every setting, from subtle dynamic control to extreme compression for effect.

Pro Features for Performing Players

The BC-1X was designed with pro practicality in mind. The 18-volt input circuitry provides ample headroom without clipping, even with the hottest signals from active basses. A 12-segment gain reduction indicator clearly displays the amount of compression at all times, a high-end feature rarely seen in stompbox compressors. The pedal’s noise performance is extremely low in comparison with other compressors, another huge benefit brought by BOSS technology. And with the road-proven BOSS compact chassis, the BC-1X ensures bulletproof reliability for years of demanding pro use.

Question: Is this supposed to come with a power supply
Answer: It does not come with a power supply.

Product features

Earthquaker Devices The Warden V2

The Warden is an optical compressor with features usually seen in studio grade units. Built with high grade components and internally powered by 18V, The Warden has loads of gain and sustain. With complete control over attack, release, sustain and ratio, The Warden allows everything from heavy squash with fast attack and release to 'barely there' subtle compression. Optical compression has a reputation for having more character than a VCA or FET based compression and The Warden is no exception.

Tone

This pedal was designed to slightly color your tone, the coloration can be dialed-in to your taste. Counter clockwise is treble cut, clockwise is treble boost. The tone is nearly flat around 11 O’Clock.

Attack

This controls how quickly the compressor reacts and starts leveling the signal. All the way counter clockwise is a fast, nearly immediate reaction. Turning the attack clockwise slows the reaction time.

Release

This controls how long it takes the signal to raise back up to the level determined by the sustain & ratio settings. All the way counter clockwise is a fast release and the release time slows as you turn it clockwise.

Level

This controls the overall output and is affected by the sustain and ratio settings. There is no specific unity setting, adjust to taste when you find your perfect compression setting.

Ratio

This determines how much the gain reduction affects the signal. All the way up is full compression and the compression is reduced as you turn this counter clockwise which allows more of the boosted, less compressed, signal to come through. There are no defined ratios here.

Sustain

This is the heart of The Warden. It controls how hot the signal is, which changes the dynamics of the compression. The Warden is a feedback style compressor, the hotter the signal, the more active the compression.

Very little sustain = very little compression, less active attack and release and a cooler signal.

Max sustain = heavy compression, longer sustain, hotter signal and more lively attack and release.

Compressor/Sustainer CS400

By pumping up quieter notes and bringing down the louder ones, this little magic box packages your sound into one velvety-smooth and consistent volume. With the CS400 in your pedalboard – you’ll enjoy virtually-endless sustain and ultra-stable dynamics!

What is a Compressor?

Dynamics play an important role in music; they help to convey emotion, whether it’s a sweet and sultry blues solo – or the relentless gallop of molten metal. But uncontrolled dynamics can take all your best intentions and turn them into so much well mush. That’s where compression comes to the rescue – softening loud sounds, and boosting low signal levels that often get lost in the mix. So the primary function of a compressor is to make every note the same volume level. The resulting compressed signal creates a much more dense, impactful sound, with richness and room for your subtle nuances coming through – like never before.

Balancing Act

Ever notice how some strings on your guitar or bass sound louder than others? This is partly due to physics; strings with lower mass just don’t put out as much volume as the heavier ones. When used properly, a compressor makes all of the strings the same volume. Compressors are also great for slap-style bass players, making thumb slaps, string pulls and muted notes all the same volume, for an extremely percussive effect.

Easy to Operate

You can dial in the right amount of compression using the dedicated Attack and Sustain dials. The Level control allows you to set the output to subtle, or engage a monster volume boost. Tone lets you add exactly the right level of highs. From clean, snappy country leads to rock solos that scream for eons, the CS400 is built to make your sound the center of attention. The bright stays LED tells you when the CS400 is on, and the top-quality on/off switch maintains outstanding signal integrity in bypass mode. You can power this scene-stealer with either a 9 V battery or our PSU-SB DC power supply (not included).

Sound Value

Push the good stuff to center stage with the Compressor/Sustainer CS400. This pedal smoothes out volume peaks and provides endless sustain with ultra-stable dynamics via the dedicated Sustain, Level and Attack time controls – for the ultimate in sound shaping. Try the CS400 at your local authorized dealer today, or grab one online – and get your 'smooth' on!

User questions & answers

Question: would this tight a telecaster bridge pickups
Answer: I use it for almost every guitar I own including a Telecaster 69 reissue semi hollow body. This compressor does a nice job and easy to use!!
Question: does the ac adapter come with it
Answer: Nope. But any standard 9V DC adapter can power it. The pedal requires just about 10-15mA of current so a standard 200mA 9V DC adapter will do the job, or any multi effect powering unit/brick as well.
Question: Does this pedal add a lot of noise to your signal
Answer: It colors the tone when engaged, and also adds a bit of noise. Most compressors do. But adding a clean power supply or a noise suppressor will fix that. If I recall correctly, a low output from the pedal results in low noise.
Question: Will it work well with a bass guitar
Answer: I've used compressors in many recordings. They generally work quite well for guitar or bass. Although I haven't played bass with this MXR it should work very well especially because the MXR is one of the better ones. Compression is the same process whether live or recorded, guitar, bass or vocals. If you're still unsure, a quality sales outlet will let you return it if it's not doing what you want it to do, whether it's voice, music, guitar OR bass. But I do think you'll like it.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used on a Bass guitar
Answer: Yes it can! I just got mine today and tried it out on an Epiphone EB-0 bass which took that super fat bass sound and enhanced the attack, smoothed out the dynamics and gave a nice overall boost to the sound. I had similar results with an Ibanez 5 string that has passive single coil pickups. I was originally looking at a couple other compressors that have a blend knob on them. This comp was so inexpensive I figured I would try it anyway and if I did't like it I wouldn't be out much money. Well it turns out I really like this pedal and I don't need one with a blend because this one does the job in a transparent sort of way that I like. With all knobs at the 12 o'clock position and the treble switch in the up position this little guy works well for my bass sound. The size is nice too.
Question: I'm fairly new to compressors. Will this pedal help with sustain on clean slide playing? (Live not studio
Answer: without a doubt YES! Listen to any of the first five or so Little Feat albums. That is Lowell George on electric slide. His signature tone used fairly heavy compression to cop wonderful clean sustain. I put my compressor first in my signal chain for the same reason. It also sweetens my overdriven solos. I would feel naked without compression in my rig.
Question: anyone compare this with joyo and mooer compressors? thanks
Answer: I have not compared to other compressor pedals, but for the price it is a decent little pedal with noticeable sustain/compression. I do find that main knob, the "compression" control, works well but the "level" control is very sensitive. I have to keep mine down below 10 or 11 o'clock, otherwise it just gets very loud. The toggle switch is also effective between normal and treble for a brighter tone. As for the "tone" control, this also needs to be fine tuned as anything past 12 o clock gets very bright, unless that's what you're aiming for.
Question: anyone compare this to the behringer compressor
Answer: I haven't compared this to the Behringer compressor but I have compared it to a MXR Dyna comp. The Behringer pedals I've had sounded good but were not very well made and crapped out on me after not much use. The Donner is a well built pedal and has a wide range of compression for the price. It is also a pretty quiet compressor compared to the Dyna Comp. I have a few of the smaller footprint pedals (Moore and Ibanez) and this one is built like a tank. For $40 it is a good purchase.

Question: original box??? owners Manual
Answer: I don't remember about the box. But, it did not bring the "owners manual" and missed one knob and the internal spring!!
Question: Does this phase shifter sound equivilent to other pedals like the mxr phase
Answer: Yes the phase 90 has less controls.
Question: I'm looking to buy my first effect: this or the MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay. Would the delay on this pedal replace the other pedal
Answer: Gave the Phase Shifter to a friend of mine and can't remember the delay effect on it so I'm not much help. However, as a first pedal I'd go with Carbon Copy, or TC Electronics Flashback, either are "always on" pedals for me. Either will give you sustain - the essence of life!
Question: Can you please verify if the pedal is made in Japan or made in Taiwan
Answer: Made in Taiwan at Roxy Music
