12 best tube combo amps
Tube combo amps are a type of guitar amplifier that combines a preamplifier, power amplifier, and speaker in a single unit. They are popular among guitarists due to their unique tonal characteristics and versatility. Here's some key information about tube combo amps:
Construction and Components: Tube combo amps typically consist of a chassis containing vacuum tubes (also known as valves) that amplify the signal. These tubes are essential for generating the warm and rich sound associated with tube amplifiers. The chassis also houses a preamplifier section, power amplifier section, and controls for adjusting tone, volume, and other settings.
Tonal Characteristics: Tube amps are known for their warm, natural, and dynamic sound. The vacuum tubes introduce harmonic distortion, which contributes to the characteristic tone. Many guitarists prefer the sound of tube amps, especially for genres like blues, rock, and classic rock.
Versatility and Flexibility: Tube combo amps often have multiple channels, allowing for a wide range of tones. Commonly, they have a clean channel for a pure, unaltered sound and a gain channel for overdrive or distortion. Some models may include built-in effects like reverb, tremolo, or delay, enhancing their versatility.
Power Rating and Size: Tube combo amps come in various power ratings, ranging from low-wattage practice amps to high-wattage stage amps. The power rating determines the amp's volume and suitability for different performance settings. Combo amps are convenient as they integrate the amplifier and speaker in a single enclosure, making them easy to transport and set up.
Maintenance and Tube Replacement: Tube combo amps require periodic maintenance, including replacing the vacuum tubes. Over time, tubes can wear out or lose their optimal performance, affecting the amp's sound. Guitarists need to be aware of the specific types of tubes their amp uses and when to replace them for optimal performance.
Popular Brands and Models: Various renowned brands produce tube combo amps, such as Fender, Marshall, Vox, Mesa/Boogie, and Orange. Each brand offers a range of models with distinct features, tonal qualities, and price points to cater to different preferences and budgets.
In summary, tube combo amps are a popular choice among guitarists seeking the classic tube-driven sound, offering versatility, warmth, and a wide range of tonal options in a convenient all-in-one package.

Get superior guitar tone and flexibility using this 15-Watt, 1x12 Guitar Combo Tube Amplifier with Celestion Speaker & Spring Reverb from Monoprice! As the title indicates, this guitar amplifier features a 15-watt tube power amplifier and a Celestion brand speaker. It uses three ECC83/12AX7 preamplification tubes and two EL84 power tubes for the amplifier section, plus a Celestion Red Truvox 1215 speaker. The EL84 tube is the tube that powered the Mullard amplifiers favored by the British Invasion bands of the 1960s. It can produce a full output from a relatively small signal and is therefore easily overdriven to produce that distinctive chiming, treble-heavy sound, especially when compared to the 6L6 tubes more commonly used in 1960s era American guitar amps. The amplifier handles frequencies between 80Hz and 10kHz, with hum and noise -75dB below the rated power and 0.5% total harmonic distortion. It includes a Low input and a High input, with the former attenuating the signal by approximately 50% and the latter being easier to overdrive. The cabinet is ported in the rear and features a leather handle, cloth speaker grill, and a cream-colored, textured, synthetic leather exterior with chrome corner guards. The amp features a genuine spring reverb with the ability to enable it remotely using a foot switch. It supports FX send and receive, so you can either connect it to an effects processor or use the send/receive connections as line out and line in connections. Two inputs allow you to select between the full power mode and a 1 watt limited amplification mode for recording or late night practice sessions.

Question: | One more try, and please read the question. the bj models before the bj iv had horrible, non linear volume controls, is the iv fixed? is it linear |
Answer: | The iv fixed it. |
Question: | Where is this amp made - thanks |
Answer: | This amp sounds great even though it's made in Mexico. The speakers are Fender (Jensen) Made in USA. It's loud as hell. |
Question: | besides 4 the stock speaker does it have an extra speaker out 4 to make it a mini like stack |
Answer: | It has two speaker outs. The primary tap is at 8 ohms. When you plug into it and the second tap, the transformer's 4 ohm tap is used. This means you can either (1) run the amp alone on the internal 8 ohm speaker, or (2) run it with the internal speaker and an external 8 ohm running at the same time (in parallel), or (3) unplug the internal speaker and use the primary output to drive an 8-ohm external speaker cabinet, or finally (4) use both taps to drive two 8-ohm external speaker cabinets. I've done them all with my 2 14 year old Hot Rod Deluxes. |
Question: | Does it have a headphone jack |
Answer: | No this amp does not have a headphone jack. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I plug in my acoustic electric guitar to get distortion effects, like crunch etc, or does that work only with electric guitars |
Answer: | Hi there. The answer is yes. Since to guitar is using a some type of pickup system which require a battery/s the Yamaha amp will work. I have done the same thing using an electro-acoustic guitar. Remember though the degree of church and or distortion is determined by two things. The type of pickups being used and the GAIN setting on both the guitar and amplifier. This will take a bit of experimenting before you find the kind of sound you're looking for. Good luck. SMINC |
Question: | What is the batrery life like on the thr |
Answer: | 8 Duracell AA batteries 2500mah enough for 10-12 hours of playing |
Question: | Is 2 small speakers superior to one larger? Thanku |
Answer: | That would depend on THE VENUE and what is REQUIRED... |
Question: | Is this plug in and batteries |
Answer: | It runs from batteries, but very power hungry. The mains DC adaptor is unique to Yamaha and the charge over £40 for it. My suggestion. Avoid this product and buy a small VOX battery amp like the VOX mini 3, better sound and lasts all day on one set of better use also has mains adaptor. Hope this helps people. |

Question: | Does anyone know if a standard 9v power supply (like what you'd use for pedals) will safely power this amp |
Answer: | Hi, it will take the Roland/Boss PSA-120s standard power supply (9-volt, 500mA, the same one you use for all Boss pedals.) Please let us know if you have any other questions! Thank you, The Midi Store Team |
Question: | How many watts? Thanks |
Answer: | 7 |
Question: | If you plug in headphones, does it mute the speaker? Can both the speaker and the rec out sound simultaneously |
Answer: | No, once you plug in headphones, the external speakers are muted. |
Question: | So this thing doesn't come with a basic AC adapter |
Answer: | It doesn't, but batteries last a long time, I find. Also, you can power it with a pretty common adapter, if you have one for other effects pedals it will probably work. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this for bass? Is there a combo version |
Answer: | Hello customer, thank you for the question, our tube amp series is designed for electric guitar only, we are also dedicated in producing the bass line for this kind of product, please keep on watching our AITONE store. The combo version in our store is MA-10B, a mini practice amp, but not tube. Thank you! |
Question: | Can you play a bass guitar with this amp |
Answer: | Hi, yes of course, you can. |
Question: | Would using a multi fx processor through the fx loop on this be better option then throughthe front of it? will it work with any mini cab rated for |
Answer: | Generally, you would want to put "pre-gain" effects in front of the loop (if you get your gain from the amp) - volume, wah, compression, etc. Effects that work well "post-gain" and are ideal for the loop are modulation effects (chorus, phaser, flanger, vibrato, etc.), delay, and reverb. This is a difficult split with a multi-effects unit unless you use it primarily for the effects that work well at one end or other of gain. That said, if you are getting your gain from your multi-effects and running the amp clean, you should put the multi-effects unit in the front of the amp and don't use loop at all. |
Question: | Is it loud enough with a 2x12 cab for gigging |
Answer: | Impedance above 8Ohm, the amplifier is loud enough, be careful. |

A Real Tube Amp-Marshall JCM 800 SOUND in the tiny body
- Use a TS-type pedal (like the Joyo Green Legend or Vintage Overdrive) to push it into higher gain territory and hear it sing.
- The amp also has a CLEAN channel that can take pedals really well, which makes it flexible and a great little companion for many situations where your “big”head is just not sensible.
- Careful, the amp is small, but loud… its 20 Watts can be quite a handful. If you want to practice quietly, use the built in headphone out with speaker emulation.
Mini Tube Amp
- A single 12AX7 tube in the preamp
- A solid state power amp
- Preamp circuit: JFET+1×12A×7
- Power amp: CLASS D.
The FX loop
- The combo amp has channel mode: CLEAN/OD.
- The FX loop enables you to put your time based effects (or Phasers, Flangers and Choruses) behind the drive section and keep the effects sharp and not prevent them from being too muddy.

In addition to their fantastic uncolored sound, many Fender amps come equipped with onboard effects that convey a versatile wealth of tonal coloring, atmospherics and textures. Includes reverb, delay, chorus, tremolo and much more.
Amp Modeling
This amplifier features digital amplifier modeling encompassing a variety of amp types old and new, U.S. and U.K., and more. From classic Fender amp sounds to modern designs voiced for specific styles (i.e., metal), it’s just like having several amps in one.

Boasting two richer, fuller and responsive voices on the Overdrive channels, the high gain voices are tight and focused, drawing on the original award-winning HT Series.USB and Balanced XLR OutputsThe simplest way to get valve tone into your recordings. The flexibility of adding a USB connector allows for sending up to 4 channels of the guitar signal, dry, preamp out and stereo emulated out into a computer for recording purposes. Two further outputs on the rear, a stereo jack socket and balanced XLR, also allow the speaker emulated signals to be connected to external devices for practicing, recording or live use.Power Reduction to 10% of the AmpA switchable power reduction circuit has been included giving reliable, transparent attenuation down to 10 percent of the amp s rated power. Question: | Does this amp have an effects send.rcv |
Answer: | No it does not. Its a clean, simple tube amp with good tone. |
Question: | will it play wel lwith a fender percusion bass |
Answer: | Your better off with a fender rumble 40w or 100w these are more for electric guitars...the fender rumble is around same price But made for bass guitars I own both 40 and 100 w Great amp with ear phone and mp3 jack, you jam with the pros... |
Question: | what is the actual weight |
Answer: | Just a guess, I’d say 15 pounds. |
Question: | Any suggestions on tubes that will break up a little earlier? I use Teles and I want a more driven sound without effects |
Answer: | You could try a hotter EL84 power tube from JJs and a Tung Sol 12AX7 preamp tube. I've tried this combo with great results. Incredible tone and the variety of sounds from this one little amp in just amazing! It is easy enough to swap tubes out so if you don't like that combo you can just play around with setups and see what suits ya best! |
