9 best solid state amps

Solid-state amplifiers, commonly known as solid-state amps, are a type of electronic amplifier used in various musical instruments, including electric guitars and bass guitars. These amplifiers use semiconductor components, such as transistors and diodes, to amplify the electrical signal from the instrument.

Here are some key characteristics and features of solid-state amplifiers:

  1. Transistors: Solid-state amplifiers use transistors as the primary amplifying components. Unlike tube amplifiers (or valve amps), which use vacuum tubes, solid-state amps rely on solid-state electronics for signal amplification. This design results in a more compact and durable amplifier.

  2. Reliability: Solid-state amplifiers are known for their reliability and durability. They are less prone to issues like tube burnout, making them suitable for musicians who require consistent performance without frequent maintenance.

  3. Compact and Lightweight: Solid-state amps are generally more compact and lightweight compared to tube amplifiers. This makes them a preferred choice for musicians who need portability for gigs and rehearsals.

  4. Clean Sound: Solid-state amps are known for their clean, transparent sound. They reproduce the input signal faithfully, making them suitable for a wide range of musical genres. They can also be used as a platform for effects pedals, as they tend not to color the sound significantly.

  5. Affordability: Solid-state amplifiers are often more affordable than tube amplifiers, making them an attractive option for beginners or musicians on a budget.

  6. Versatility: Many solid-state amplifiers offer a range of built-in effects, such as reverb, chorus, and distortion, which can be convenient for musicians who want to experiment with different tones without the need for additional pedals.

  7. Consistency: Solid-state amps deliver consistent performance, regardless of temperature or external conditions, making them suitable for various environments, including outdoor gigs.

  8. Low Maintenance: Solid-state amplifiers require minimal maintenance compared to tube amplifiers, which may need regular tube replacements.

While solid-state amplifiers offer several advantages, it's essential to note that they may not provide the same warmth and natural overdrive characteristics as tube amplifiers. The choice between solid-state and tube amplifiers often comes down to personal preference and the specific sound characteristics a musician desires for their playing style and musical genre.

Product description

The Orange Micro Dark hybrid electric guitar amplifier head puts great high-gain tones in a simple and very portable package. Based around Orange's popular Dark series of amplifiers, the Micro Dark offers the same searing gain and tonal versatility as its big brothers, but boasts the same tiny format as the Micro Terror. This mighty mite crams 20 watts into a head about the size of a small lunchbox. If you need a simple to use, portable amplifier, with huge tones, check out the Orange Micro Dark. The Dark series of amplifiers make no secret that they're engineered for high gain heavy metal. But even with the few knobs on the front panel, you'll be able to quickly dial in a large variety of tones from metal grind to spanky cleans. And if the huge range of tones available aren't enough, the Micro Dark will work with most guitar speaker cabinets, allowing you to fine tune your tone. There simply aren't many other amplifier heads this small that can keep up with the Micro Dark's 12AX7-driven tones, and 20-watts of power. At under three pounds, the Micro Dark amplifier head is a sinch to transport to any recording session, rehearsal, or gig. And it's diminutive size makes it an easy fit in any room, no matter how tight the space may be. The 3-knob control panel makes pulling great sounds out of your Orange Micro Dark easy. It features pots for volume, gain, and shape. The shape control is the same used on the other Dark series of amplifiers, going from scooped grind on one side of the dial to a more classic mid-focused tone on the other. Want even more tonal options? The Mico Dark boasts a buffered effects loop in the back for patching in your favorite time-based effects. And the single input and single speaker out streamlines your set up so you're getting great tone in no time.

  • User questions & answers

Question: How does the 8/16 ohm output work? Is it automatic? No need to manually select which homage you need
Answer: Here is a URL for a 12VAC wall transformer you can use. https://www.amazon.com/Reliapro-ACU120100D0531-Adapter-Transformer-Straight/dp/B00B8861T2/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=12v+ac+power+supply&qid=1609824712&sr=8-5 Any 12VAC wall adapter will work, that puts out ac not dc. Not all of those power adapter/transformers have dc output, some are ac. Read the label and see. This one has 1000mA = 1A which should be plenty of current. I have one of these and I just used one I had laying around that had 12VAC output @ 750mA. You don't need much current; a few milliamps will do say 20mA, but get one that has several hundred. People don't realize that having a power supply with current supply capability many times beyond what is needed greatly adds to the sonic quality especially the bass response of and amplifier. The one in the URL will do just this, really nice.

    • Active 4-band parametric EQ section
    • Foot switchable class A compression
    • Balanced & line outputs
    • 2 x Parallel speak on speaker outputs

    Product features

    Orange 4 Stroke 300

The 4 Stroke Series is our offering to the demanding modern bass player – everything you need, and nothing you don’t. Featuring all-analogue circuitry throughout, the 4 Stroke 300 & 500 speak with genuine authority, delivering powerful tones with a natural and rounded emphasis that leaves Class D amps in their wake. The Class AB 4 Stroke stays crystal clean and expressive all the way up, without ever becoming sterile or fatiguing.

The centrepiece of these amps is the uncompromising tone stack which allows for an unparalleled level of control over the EQ without the fussiness that plagues so many. The active four-band parametric EQ covers an enormous range and opens up limitless possibilities. Whether you need to sculpt your signature sound, bring out the character of your instrument or combat troublesome acoustic environments, the 4 Stroke deals with all comers in an instant. For the finishing touch, our proprietary Class A compression circuit tracks seamlessly, adding further punch and fatness. On the rear, you’ll find the usual essentials: two parallel speaker outputs (min. total load 4 Ohms), plus balanced and line level outputs. Available in 300W and 500W configurations, the 4 Stroke Series is the perfect tool for the contemporary bassist – powerful, usable, musical.

    All Analogue Design

Trusting our ears and moving away from Class D technology altogether, the 4 Stroke is 100% analogue throughout. At the point of entry, the 4 Stroke features a new all-discrete Class A input buffer circuit. This contributes to crystal clear note definition and a highly detailed response, accurately reproducing even the most subtle nuances under your fingers. The Class AB output section (available in either 300 or 500 Watts) ensures these amps stay composed and assertive, whatever the venue. This design also means the 4 Stroke can also be used without a speaker load, perfect for direct recording in the studio.

    Active Four-Band Parametric EQ

Full control over the entire sound spectrum – not just the mids. Featuring four independent frequency controls, each with up to 18dB of cut or boost, the 4 Stroke’s Q curves have been engineered to achieve the perfect balance between precision and usability. The intuitive layout is typically Orange – “Do much more, with much less.” With no pre-defined contour or filter switches, the ability to fine tune your sound has never been more comprehensive.

    Parametric Bands

    Bass: 40 – 400Hz.

    Low Mid: 80 – 800Hz.

    High Mid: 250 – 2.5kHz.

    Treble: 550 – 5.5kHz.

(Crossover between bands allows for even more cut/boost when required).

    Footswitchable Class A Compression

Rather than a common hard limiter, the 4 Stroke’s Class A compressor design maintains the transients of the input signal for a dynamic playing response. The carefully developed sidechain has a fattening effect on the core tone at lower compression settings, whilst increasing the amount of compression adds a springy character to the attack, great for heavy thumb work. With just a simple level control (much like many classic studio units), the compression can also be engaged or defeated remotely with the optional FS-1 footswitch.

    Sean Scott of Creeper

'I use Orange based on the consistency of great tone and simplicity.'

    User questions & answers

Question: Is this a good choice for electroacoustic instruments, keyboards, etc.? I've been told guitar-specific amps can "color" the sound too much
Answer: This is made specifically for guitars. If you use an acoustic it won't sound much like an acoustic would on its own. That said, dont let it stop you from experimentation. That is the whole point of music!
Question: can i use peddles or effects with this amp
Answer: Yes. Its a great sounding practice amp, the 6" speaker can only handle so much. But you can use pedals with it.
Question: does it come with the cable needed to plug it into the wall
Answer: Yes, it comes with a power cable. Great practice amp.
Question: Does this have clean or dirty
Answer: One channel so you have to adjust to get either clean or dirty.

    User questions & answers

Question: Can you gig fine with this
Answer: Yes the power cord do have a mute button
Question: could you plug it into a speaker cabinet
Answer: Yes the software can be updated very easily at home. The Max 360c can even be updated through WiFi.
Question: Can it be plugged into a PA system for live performance
Answer: The screen could be brighter. Dont think the colors of arrows can be changed.
Question: How would this do for a practice amp for a Bass
Answer: I think that the 0.6 watts each measurement, 1.2 watt total must be a mistake, off by a factor of ten. I've tested them against my portable ten watt powered stereo speaker (five watts per channel). They're slightly louder than the portable speaker. I would bet money that these are six watts each, twelve watts total. I'm sorry I don't have a more sophisticated method of testing, but, no way are they just 1.2 watts total.
