14 best modeling amps
Modeling amplifiers, often referred to as modelers, are a type of musical instrument amplifier that leverages digital technology to simulate the sounds of various traditional amplifiers, speaker cabinets, and effects pedals. These amplifiers are popular among guitarists and bassists for their versatility and the wide range of tones they can reproduce. Here's what you should know about modeling amps and their related aspects:
Modeling Amp Overview:
- Modeling amps use digital signal processing (DSP) to recreate the sounds of classic amplifiers and effects.
- They are designed to provide musicians with a wide array of tones and effects in a single, compact package.
Combo Amps:
- Many modeling amps are available in combo amp form, meaning the amplifier and speaker are housed in a single unit.
- Combo amps are convenient for practice and smaller performances.
Bass Guitar Amplifiers and Preamps:
- Modeling technology is not limited to guitar amps; there are also modeling bass amps and preamps available.
- These units can emulate the sounds of various bass amplifiers and speaker cabinets, offering bassists flexibility in tone shaping.
Guitar and Bass Amplifiers Preamps:
- Some modeling amps are designed as standalone preamps that can be paired with external power amps and speaker cabinets.
- This setup allows for more customization and versatility in creating a specific sound.
Amplifiers Effects:
- Modeling amps often include a wide range of built-in effects, such as reverb, delay, distortion, and modulation.
- These effects can be combined and adjusted to create unique sounds.
Tone Modeling:
- Modeling amps use algorithms to recreate the characteristics of classic amplifiers, including tube and solid-state models.
- Musicians can switch between various amp models and tweak settings to achieve different tones.
Presets and User Profiles:
- Many modeling amps come with preset settings that emulate famous songs or iconic guitar tones.
- Users can also create their own custom profiles and save them for future use.
Portability and Convenience:
- Modeling amps are often lighter and more portable than traditional tube amplifiers, making them suitable for gigs, rehearsals, and home practice.
Recording and Direct Output:
- Modeling amps typically have direct output options for recording purposes, allowing musicians to connect them directly to a mixing console or audio interface.
Learning and Experimentation:
- Modeling amps are popular among beginners and seasoned musicians alike because they provide an easy way to explore different sounds without the need for multiple physical amplifiers and effects pedals.
Software Integration:
- Some modeling amps can be connected to a computer for additional sound editing and firmware updates.
- Manufacturers often provide software interfaces for deeper customization.
Price Range:
- Modeling amps are available in a wide range of price points, making them accessible to musicians with varying budgets.
Modeling amps have revolutionized the way musicians approach amplification and tone shaping. They offer a cost-effective and flexible solution for musicians who want to experiment with different sounds and effects without the need for an extensive collection of physical equipment.

Question: | can i record through garage band |
Answer: | honestly I've never separated the cabs I Velcro'd it stacked so its like a full stack, lemme go check THEN...................................... OK checked, heres the lo Down.. the chorus is in full stereo meaning it echos in both right and left speakers however its simultaneous and does not PAN left and right like an echoplex or true stereo echo that I could tell? you'll laugh anyways at the chord that comes with the 103, its like 24 inches long.. WHY? its phone plugs so EASY to find old home style phone cables, dunno your age maybe you've never seen one? yea int he day we had our phones connected to a wall outlet with a cable, its like a small like cat5 (rj45 is the standard name) you've seen cat5 its what your computer hooks up to the Ethernet with..all in all its WELL worth it its a GREAT little amp specially with the full stack setup, the echo works FANTASTIC and quite frankly I wish I had one that worked that well on my bigger stuff despite the non stereo panning, I have a Johnson Two Fifty and a Digitech GSP 2101 studio tube for all that stuff, yea man get a Johnson 150 250 or the digitech GSP 2101 if you want true stereo panning, WOW, I work it in QUAD and can dial it in however I like cuz its FULLY programmable with algorithms!!!tell you what tho I have mic's this little Blackstar and IT ROCKS!!! yup, if you have a board that does stereo panning then there ya go! crank n go, funny what I like to do is plug my acoustic into it then mic the Blackstar through the PA and recording or playing live that way SUCH A NICE CRISP CLEAN SOUND because yo don't have all that power in the way stepping on its own dork soaking up all the interference if ya know what I mean, try it you will be totally surprised, typing in this minuscule dialogue box is difficult at best, why so small Amazon?its a great little box (fact I tried em all cept the orange that I'm told is compatable and it smokes them ALL)not sure what you need it to do but for whatever the hunnerd for both is a FANTASTIC deal considering what it can do and the sound that can come out of it... distortion works well too, I love the little thing i use it at the park then in my bedroom so the neighbors can sleep and I don't have to pay finesfor an electric I use a nice 61 Strat that has some really really hot hand wound Gepettos then those run into a FULL Clapton mid boost, the works, yup so that lil boost in signal really makes that Blackstar a beast in its own rights..all in all I give it 10 stars with the other speaker |
Question: | it has a footswitch jack, can you go from a clean sound hit the switch and go into over drive for a solo |
Answer: | Blackstar has their own power supply specifically for this. Amazon sells it on it's own for around $20, and I believe when you buy the 3 pack, the Blackstar power supply comes with it. I can't say for sure, as I bought just the single unit. Save yourself the trouble and buy the 3-pack - the amp on it's own is incredible, and the stack is well worth the price. Just make sure it comes with the proprietary Blackstar power supply. |
Question: | Does Fuse work with this amp |
Answer: | absolutely not ! The fly 3 runs on 6volts /positive tip . When you buy the fly on amazon, the planet waves adaptor is suggested . My friend bought the fly to his son and pluged it on a 9 volts adapter...... he blew the amp . You may pay a little more but buy the right adapter, it works well and saves batteries |
Question: | What is in the box |
Answer: | Yes, for the extension cabinet, which expands this from 3w to 6w. The 3-pack is a good deal, because a) you get better volume but mainly because b) it includes the power supply, which means that c) the extension cabinet is virtually free. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it loud enough to play gigs |
Answer: | I have a VT30 and it is plenty loud to play gigs. I use an amp stand to bring it up to waist level. If you have a big room and or a lot of people, just mic it through the PA system. The best thing about these valvetronix amps are that they are VOX amps. I honestly don't think that I'll buy another Fender amp again. |
Question: | Does it take well on pedals? (want to use a dunlop cry baby |
Answer: | This is a great little amp. Plenty of sound. Pedals are not a problem at all. |
Question: | Mine has a slight constant hiss as soon as you turn it on. Does anyone else have this |
Answer: | Mine was so noisy I boxed it up and returned it. It had a constant hiss and background noise that went up and down as notes were played and decayed. Not a problem with loud, fast playing but it made slow, soft playing unbearably noisy. |
Question: | Have demoed several of the vtx range in stores: when you switch between amp models; the volume level jumps violently. anyone know why |
Answer: | The reason might be that the people who make the patches seem not to care about volume disparity, but the way around it in this case is to max the 'volume' knob, and then use the 'power level' knob as your master volume knob. The volumes between amp models will be more consistent if you do that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of power supply does this use? Can I plug into the wall or does it take batteries? I'm not very familiar with amplifiers, thanks |
Answer: | Documentation does not say, not on the box either. Coverage area indicates it is 2.4. Works very well I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck. |
Question: | Would this be good for Karaoke (I have a Karaoke Mixer) or for connecting to a Projector to boost the sound |
Answer: | It depends on the dealer's policy. |
Question: | Does it come with a wire |
Answer: | Just received the DWS-3 system today on recommendations from numerous reviews and forums. Plugged it in using my Warwick Thumb 5-string and GK mb500. No discernible difference from using a standard cable. Handled the low B string just fine. I’m confident it will do fine at gig this weekend with GK+SWR Goliath III cab. |
Question: | Can this amp used for violin? Does it has speakers |
Answer: | As it is I found that mine did also , after research for a few minutes I found that it was my input jack on the guitar . Don’t know if this helps but I cleaned mine with a burst of compressed air and it helped but ultimately I changed the jack out for a new one and I now have crisp and clear sound . |

Question: | My Spider amp turns off during and all jam sessions. Do any of you have the same problem with this amp |

Question: | is this solid state |
Answer: | Yes it is. |
Question: | I have what is probably a silly question; but I am still a guitar newbie. Do I have to use the presets, or can I plug in pedals and bypass those? Also, with the other LINE6 modeling amps, what is the answer to the same question? Thank you |
Answer: | I have this amp and I own two boss brand pedals, and it handles them just like any other amp. no need for cat 5e cables, you can just connect a pedal through the guitar input amp cable |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a recommended transportation case for the thr100hd head |
Answer: | Yes, Yamaha makes a padded soft case Model number is THRHBG1. |
Question: | Speaker config for thr100 dual? looks like i would need two speakers (ie 2x12" cabinet in stereo or two 1x12" extension cabs) to use both amps |
Answer: | Either way works. Consult the manual for different configurations to match. |
Question: | Is the thr100hd really 100 watts or are they playing games with the specs? 100 watts should be insanely loud yet some say it isn't loud enough |
Answer: | Solid state vs tube watts are different. 100 watts of solid state amplification is closer to 20w to 30w tube |
Question: | Are you stuck with the five amps that are in there, or can you load other amps via the editor |
Answer: | only have the 5 amp models to choose from But dont let that deter you. there are multiple tube types to choose from for each amp type, as well as 3 programmable boosts and reverbs.. think of each of amp type as a blank canvas. you have a base color to play with. but you can bob ross style paint happy little tones to each one. the editor controls your DI impulse responses, the boosts and reverbs. this is a very versatile amplifier. i definitely suggest getting the 212 matching cabinet. the stereo feature is amazing. you have a plethora of color and tone combinations with this unit. |

Sometimes though, you want to take your sound in a new direction with something just a little different. The THR head features five distinct custom amp types from solid state through to modified high-gain, all tuned to sound amazing whether you want to get your drive from a pedal or your amp.
5 Tube Types
THR amp heads feature VCM simulation that allows you to pick from five classic tube types for any amp model with nothing more than the flick of a switch on the rear panel. You can even choose from the smooth compression, soft touch and old-school distortion of class A, or the tight bass response, greater headroom and increased dynamics of class A/B for each tube type.
Speaker Impulse Response
Any amp only sounds as good as the last link in the signal chain– and in a great sounding rig, that’s usually a cabinet and microphone. THR amp heads use impulse response speaker simulation to drive a DI tone that’s indistinguishable from a perfectly mic’d cabinet. With simulations of a range of industry-standard cabinets and mics available via a USB connection with your PC, THR amp heads give you a host of options straight out of the box.
Hi Res Direct Connectivity
THR amp heads are equipped with XLR line outputs for connection to professional recording or live sound equipment. The speaker outputs don’t even need a dummy load, so you can disconnect your speakers for silent recording or on-stage performance without having to worry about damage to your amp.
Utility Software
THR amp heads come equipped with USB functionality that lets you connect to your computer for quick and easy configuration of the on-board reverb and booster effects, switching between serial and parallel effects setups, and uploading of IR data files.
Boost Function
THR amp heads come equipped with an assignable booster that can be engaged direct from the amp or via the dedicated footswitch. With 3 incredible sounding VCM boosters, from a clean solo boost to a smooth overdrive, all selectable via the optional utility software, the THR’s boost function is ready to push your tone to the next level, right when you need it.
Footswtich Bundled
An included dedicated footswitch is available for each model, giving you the control you need at home, in the studio or on-stage. With access to boost, reverb and FX Loop functions, plus A/B/A+B switching for THR100H Dual, everything’s right where you need it. Industry-standard 5-pin DIN MIDI connectors even allow you to replace and extend the cable easily and cost-effectively.
Perfectly Matched Cabinets
Almost all of the classic tube sounds of the last few decades have been a product of the synergy between a high-quality amp head and a dedicated speaker cabinet designed to complement the unique sonic characteristics of the amp. The THRC112/THRC212 are no different, and have been crafted and tuned specifically to accommodate the versatile amp, speaker, and valve simulations of THR amp heads.

User questions & answers
Question: | This is a 40 watt amp? For 179... does it have built in distortion and reverb and delay? Thanks |
Answer: | No tubes, this is a solid state amp. But I must say it sounds very authentic to the legendary Vox amps from the sixties, either played clean or overdrive. I rate this amp five stars. |
Question: | What function does the tap button perform? Thanks |
Answer: | I have an Epiphone es339 and I am pretty happy with it. It's really not a bad little amp. A casino should sound good through it. |
Question: | what size is speaker |
Answer: | It is only 10w. I find it more frustrating that between the gain channel and clean, there's a large volume setting difference. I have to turn up the volume a lot when I switch between them to clean. |
Question: | is the power cord |
Answer: | Very little to none...Only time I have noticed any was when i had it powered through a AC plug in my SUV. In home use i have noticed none. It is a great little amp. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the usb port mean it has interface capabilities (can i record with it without an audio interface to pc |
Answer: | The PC recognizes the USB connection as a MIDI interface, which can be used to switch between patches. |
Question: | Can you delete only the previous loop that you recorded instead of the whole loop |
Answer: | No you can not delete part of a loop. In some other loopers you can undo one or more previous loops, but with the G1on you can not. When you delete a loop that was made on top of a a rhythm loop all the loops get deleted. It kind of sucks! This is about the only fault I can find w/ the G1on. |
Question: | I just bought a digitech-360 and found out i can't use the looper with the drum machine.. can you use the drums with the looper on this unit |
Answer: | Yes you can select a drum pattern and start playing it, then switch to looper mode and record while playing to the drum sounds. The drum sounds don't get recorded though, but you can play to the beat unlike the digitech 360. |
Question: | whats the difference between this and spending hundreds on different pedals |
Answer: | Lol! A lot, and not that much. This makes for an excellent practice pedal/tone lab. It's perfect for trying out different sounds and pedal combos and learning about basic signal path for FX. Some people even gig with this unit, though the G3X and G5X are considered more "Pro. Grade" though they have basically the same FX engine. Picking, buying, and building your own custom boutique pedal board is also rewarding and can provide some more unique and better quality FX... But you can literally spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Plus you'll need to try out the different pedals and build out a board. But individual pedals does give you flexibility DURING a performance. Note that the G1Xon has only two stomps and a wah. (Look at the manual, it's more complicated than that.) But basically (tl:dr) if you already know what sounds you want and you're a professional, spend hundreds on different pedals. If you want to experiment with different tone/FX and are primarily rehearsing and doing house of worship & coffee houses, buy the G1Xon. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this good for piano keyboard |
Answer: | I never tried this but I would imagine you could do all kinds of cool stuff with this amp and a keyboard. As far as the amp goes it is the best one I own and super loud with so many variables. I Love It... Don't know if this will help... Good Luck |
Question: | How do you use it with a microphone |
Answer: | This is not a good amp for a microphone but if needed you could use the acoustic guitar settings for a microphone if the mic has @ 1/4 "jack. if you want an amp that is good for a microphone you are better off going with an amp that has 1/4" jacks as well as xlr input wich is most common with a quality mic. I personally like the acoustic brand amps for my microphones they are designed for an electric acoustic guitar and have xlr inputs and the reverb settings work well with microphones. Peavey also makes awesome products for running microphones check out there website you will find what you need rosemary. Sincerily Rick Barkle |
Question: | what are the demensions |
Answer: | 17"w x 9"d x 15"h |
Question: | can you use an electric acoustic guitar with this and get good sound |
Answer: | Very good, sounds great with an electric or a bass guitar too. This amp is not for a beginner though. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i plug use a boss hm-2 pedal with this |
Answer: | It does have a very clean channel that is great for pedals, and some of the dirty channels sound good with additional effects as well... |
Question: | Is this one better than yamaha yhr series |
Answer: | It is comparable to THR. Yamaha has updated their line at some point so for example THR-30ii has a bit more features (like support for wireless guitar plugs, or couple of more of presets available out of the box), but sound-wise they're in the same ballpark. Most obvious difference is in design, vox looks like a purse, or a fancy flashy speaker, yamaha looks very industrial. |
Question: | does this item come with AC adaptor |
Answer: | Yes it does. |
Question: | can you use bluetooth headphones |
Answer: | You can use the device AS a bluetooth speaker, but no, it doesn't work the other way around. You CAN run the usb from the amp to a computer and use the bluetooth from the computer to run bluetooth headphones, but in my experience, this has a delay - it MAY work better if all your bluetooth stuff is 5.0 or newer though. |

Question: | cover for champion 100xl amp ? need one |
Answer: | I bought a “65 twin reverb” cover. I think the dimensions were identical, just check and make sure. |
Question: | What is the difference between 100 and the 100XL |
Answer: | XL has different speakers - Celestions vs Jensen. Also more modeling options. If like mostly play clean, you may like the Jensen's on the 100 better. I you like gain/distortion, the 100XL is better. I like things on the cleaner side, but I like the Woof the Celestion's put out. |
Question: | Can I play bass on this |
Answer: | You can but it won't have the low end frequency response of an actual bass amp. You should look at the Fender Rumble series of amps. |
