14 best practice amps
Practice amps are small amplifiers designed for use with musical instruments, primarily electric guitars and bass guitars. These amplifiers are typically compact, portable, and relatively low in wattage, making them ideal for practice sessions, home use, and small-scale performances. Here are some key characteristics and features of practice amps:
Size and Portability: Practice amps are compact and lightweight, making them easy to transport and suitable for practicing at home, in a small studio, or even while traveling.
Low Wattage: Most practice amps have lower wattage ratings compared to stage or gigging amplifiers. They typically range from 1 watt to 20 watts. This lower wattage is sufficient for practicing without disturbing neighbors or family members.
Tone Control: Practice amps often come with basic tone control features, such as treble and bass adjustments. Some may also include EQ settings or built-in effects like reverb and delay.
Headphone Jack: Many practice amps include a headphone output, allowing the player to practice silently while listening through headphones. This feature is useful for late-night or private practice sessions.
Auxiliary Input: Some practice amps have an auxiliary input, enabling you to connect external audio sources like smartphones or MP3 players, so you can play along with backing tracks or songs.
Size of Speaker: The size of the speaker in a practice amp can vary, but they are typically smaller than those in larger amplifiers. Common speaker sizes include 6 inches, 8 inches, and 10 inches.
Transistor vs. Tube: Practice amps are often solid-state (transistor) amplifiers, which are more affordable and require less maintenance than tube amplifiers. However, some models may emulate the warmth and saturation of tube amps through digital modeling technology.
Affordability: Practice amps are generally more budget-friendly compared to larger amplifiers designed for stage performances.
Versatility: While practice amps are primarily associated with electric guitars and basses, some models are versatile enough to accommodate other instruments, including keyboards and electronic drums.
Brand and Model Variety: There is a wide range of practice amps available from various manufacturers, offering different features and tonal characteristics to suit different playing styles and preferences.
Durability: Practice amps are typically built to be durable but may not be as rugged as stage amplifiers intended for touring. They are best suited for indoor use and careful transportation.
Amplifier Modeling: Some modern practice amps come with amplifier modeling technology, allowing players to mimic the sound characteristics of various amplifier types, such as vintage tube amps or high-gain stacks.
Practice amps serve as valuable tools for musicians to hone their skills, experiment with different tones, and practice in various settings. They are an essential piece of gear for beginners and experienced players alike, offering a convenient and cost-effective way to improve their musical abilities and explore different sounds.

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of power supply does this use? Can I plug into the wall or does it take batteries? I'm not very familiar with amplifiers, thanks |
Answer: | Documentation does not say, not on the box either. Coverage area indicates it is 2.4. Works very well I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck. |
Question: | Would this be good for Karaoke (I have a Karaoke Mixer) or for connecting to a Projector to boost the sound |
Answer: | It depends on the dealer's policy. |
Question: | Does it come with a wire |
Answer: | Just received the DWS-3 system today on recommendations from numerous reviews and forums. Plugged it in using my Warwick Thumb 5-string and GK mb500. No discernible difference from using a standard cable. Handled the low B string just fine. I’m confident it will do fine at gig this weekend with GK+SWR Goliath III cab. |
Question: | Can this amp used for violin? Does it has speakers |
Answer: | As it is I found that mine did also , after research for a few minutes I found that it was my input jack on the guitar . Don’t know if this helps but I cleaned mine with a burst of compressed air and it helped but ultimately I changed the jack out for a new one and I now have crisp and clear sound . |

User questions & answers
Question: | can i record through garage band |
Answer: | honestly I've never separated the cabs I Velcro'd it stacked so its like a full stack, lemme go check THEN...................................... OK checked, heres the lo Down.. the chorus is in full stereo meaning it echos in both right and left speakers however its simultaneous and does not PAN left and right like an echoplex or true stereo echo that I could tell? you'll laugh anyways at the chord that comes with the 103, its like 24 inches long.. WHY? its phone plugs so EASY to find old home style phone cables, dunno your age maybe you've never seen one? yea int he day we had our phones connected to a wall outlet with a cable, its like a small like cat5 (rj45 is the standard name) you've seen cat5 its what your computer hooks up to the Ethernet with..all in all its WELL worth it its a GREAT little amp specially with the full stack setup, the echo works FANTASTIC and quite frankly I wish I had one that worked that well on my bigger stuff despite the non stereo panning, I have a Johnson Two Fifty and a Digitech GSP 2101 studio tube for all that stuff, yea man get a Johnson 150 250 or the digitech GSP 2101 if you want true stereo panning, WOW, I work it in QUAD and can dial it in however I like cuz its FULLY programmable with algorithms!!!tell you what tho I have mic's this little Blackstar and IT ROCKS!!! yup, if you have a board that does stereo panning then there ya go! crank n go, funny what I like to do is plug my acoustic into it then mic the Blackstar through the PA and recording or playing live that way SUCH A NICE CRISP CLEAN SOUND because yo don't have all that power in the way stepping on its own dork soaking up all the interference if ya know what I mean, try it you will be totally surprised, typing in this minuscule dialogue box is difficult at best, why so small Amazon?its a great little box (fact I tried em all cept the orange that I'm told is compatable and it smokes them ALL)not sure what you need it to do but for whatever the hunnerd for both is a FANTASTIC deal considering what it can do and the sound that can come out of it... distortion works well too, I love the little thing i use it at the park then in my bedroom so the neighbors can sleep and I don't have to pay finesfor an electric I use a nice 61 Strat that has some really really hot hand wound Gepettos then those run into a FULL Clapton mid boost, the works, yup so that lil boost in signal really makes that Blackstar a beast in its own rights..all in all I give it 10 stars with the other speaker |
Question: | it has a footswitch jack, can you go from a clean sound hit the switch and go into over drive for a solo |
Answer: | Blackstar has their own power supply specifically for this. Amazon sells it on it's own for around $20, and I believe when you buy the 3 pack, the Blackstar power supply comes with it. I can't say for sure, as I bought just the single unit. Save yourself the trouble and buy the 3-pack - the amp on it's own is incredible, and the stack is well worth the price. Just make sure it comes with the proprietary Blackstar power supply. |
Question: | Does Fuse work with this amp |
Answer: | absolutely not ! The fly 3 runs on 6volts /positive tip . When you buy the fly on amazon, the planet waves adaptor is suggested . My friend bought the fly to his son and pluged it on a 9 volts adapter...... he blew the amp . You may pay a little more but buy the right adapter, it works well and saves batteries |
Question: | What is in the box |
Answer: | Yes, for the extension cabinet, which expands this from 3w to 6w. The 3-pack is a good deal, because a) you get better volume but mainly because b) it includes the power supply, which means that c) the extension cabinet is virtually free. |

Answer: | It should be |
Question: | Can I plug my bass into this amp and get reasonable sound for practice |

Answer: | These ones are XL / extra large |
Question: | How does it compare to the Orange Micro Crush |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a good choice for electroacoustic instruments, keyboards, etc.? I've been told guitar-specific amps can "color" the sound too much |
Answer: | This is made specifically for guitars. If you use an acoustic it won't sound much like an acoustic would on its own. That said, dont let it stop you from experimentation. That is the whole point of music! |
Question: | can i use peddles or effects with this amp |
Answer: | Yes. Its a great sounding practice amp, the 6" speaker can only handle so much. But you can use pedals with it. |
Question: | does it come with the cable needed to plug it into the wall |
Answer: | Yes, it comes with a power cable. Great practice amp. |
Question: | Does this have clean or dirty |
Answer: | One channel so you have to adjust to get either clean or dirty. |

Question: | does this AC30 give you both classic rock and metal effect? in the same device |
Answer: | It gives you gain control, plus a few echo effects. If you want Metal I believe there is a metal version vox device.. Hope that helps! |
Question: | What is the difference between the models? specifically the lead and classic rock models |
Answer: | From Vox: AC30: Provides the AC30 top boost sound. Classic Rock: Delivers the classic crunch of a UK-made 100W amp. Metal: Gives you the extreme high-gain sound of a US-made amp. Bass: Designed specifically for low frequencies, offering a wide-range response. |
Question: | Does this model (AC30) have an overdrive / distortion mode? Trying to decide between this one and the "Classic Rock" model |
Answer: | The ac30 does not have a distortion mode. What I love about this one is it is super clean sounding. I'm 100% sure you can buy a piece to go from it to a pedal than to the head set, but take it from me don't get there ac30 headset or any of the headset period with this. Buy a gaming headset, with a Mic. To everyone else sounds like your singing to no music, but sounds so clear to the user. Ac30 is better than I could ever hope for I recommend it 100% to anyone. Let me know what you think. XD |
Question: | what size headphone jack does it have |
Answer: | Small, 3.5mm! Your regular iphone jack for headphones |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it worth the extra $300 to get the Rumble 500 head and the 410 and 115 cab, rather than the combo + the 115 extension |
Answer: | You can use it normally. It's plastic but it's well built. However if you use it in extreme condition you have to protect. But If you use it normally..be care only in front part where you can find speaker. In fact speaker could be demaged. But this problem is for all amply big and small |
Question: | As a stand alone unit, are the 210's pushing 500 watts, or do you need to attach another cabinet at lower ohms to get your 500 watts |
Answer: | Simply put, it dosent. The fender is a nice shelf nicknack to look at, and it's ok with headphones to, but its sound is pretty lacking. The Orange would be a real practice amp. Of any real micro amp to consider I would spend a little more and get a vox mini 3. Just this past year I had the chance to help run sound for Peter Furler, he used one live mic'd with a Sennheiser e609 playing his Gretch White Falcon and it sounded amazing! |
Question: | I'm helping a friend pick out a bass & amp for her son. Would this amp be loud enough for a small entry-level garage band |
Answer: | I would think that they would be. I used these same gloves when I worked at Whirlpool. They were great. I have been retired for 10 years now and I ordered these to do work around the house. I have gotten them very wet and let them dry and reused them. |
Question: | is this amp usable in new zealand |
Answer: | I get the biggest size which has it on there so my guess is that maybe that 8/m is on all the gloves |

User questions & answers
Question: | This is a 40 watt amp? For 179... does it have built in distortion and reverb and delay? Thanks |
Answer: | No tubes, this is a solid state amp. But I must say it sounds very authentic to the legendary Vox amps from the sixties, either played clean or overdrive. I rate this amp five stars. |
Question: | What function does the tap button perform? Thanks |
Answer: | I have an Epiphone es339 and I am pretty happy with it. It's really not a bad little amp. A casino should sound good through it. |
Question: | what size is speaker |
Answer: | It is only 10w. I find it more frustrating that between the gain channel and clean, there's a large volume setting difference. I have to turn up the volume a lot when I switch between them to clean. |
Question: | is the power cord |
Answer: | Very little to none...Only time I have noticed any was when i had it powered through a AC plug in my SUV. In home use i have noticed none. It is a great little amp. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work with the yamaha yev-10x violin? between thr10ii and thr5a which one gives the better sound quality if connected to a yev violin |
Answer: | I remember way back when I was in my first band. I had an ampeg B-15 and it was woefully underpowered. All I got out of it was a ton of distortion. It can be very frustrating for a new player to have to deal with poor sound. I’ve known guys who have given up playing because of the frustration of dealing with noise instead of music. I would use a 25w amp for practicing by myself but for a garage band I would go with a minimum of 100w. |
Question: | What's the total power of this amp |
Answer: | I turned mine upside down and it still worked so I suppose it will be OK down there. (On mine, input power is marked 100-120V @ 50-60 HZ, 70W.) |
Question: | Would this do well as an acoustic amp, as well as an electric |
Answer: | I don't see why not. As long as the input is via a 1/4 inch mono plug. It is an amazing little practice amp but don't expect it to reproduce the sounds like a more powerfulamp and 12 inch speaker. |
Question: | What's the difference between this model and the wl model that's $150 more? i can find no info on yamaha website on what wl mean, etc; thanks |
Answer: | If you are expecting any kind of real bass feel, this amp won't give it to you. I would rather spend the money on a bass-buddy, it's like a little personal guitar amp. It clips to your belt and you plug your guitar in and then slip on the headphones. For the bass, it gives you several bass setups like 'slap' or 'fretless' . If you don't want to use headphones, run the headphone jack from the bass buddy into a stereo input and you'll find a better sound. |

The Third Amp
Guitarists are familiar with the tube amp stacks that sound amazing when turned up loud on a big stage, and with combo amps that are a perfect fit for smaller venues and rehearsal. THR ignored the convention that a practice amp should simply be a smaller version of a larger amp, creating a new “third amp” category designed around what players need when they’re playing at home.
Fully-Wireless Experience
All THR-II models feature Bluetooth connectivity for audio playback, the “THR Remote” mobile editor app, and third-party footswitch support.
THR10II Wireless and THR30II Wireless also feature a built-in rechargeable battery and Line 6 wireless receiver. Just grab your THR, your guitar and a Line 6 Relay G10T transmitter (sold separately), and play anywhere your music takes you.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is input power as 110 volt, 220 Volt,or 110-240 Volt |
Answer: | Metal band in a 1000 seat venue-no, local bar,100 people or less, normal drummer should be OK. A friend of mine has the 100 watt version and has been playing local gigs at 50 watts, says its just loud enough, works fine. |
Question: | Does this come in black |
Answer: | Yes. The extra features that it brings makes the MKII much more useful. |
Question: | How does the Aux input work |
Answer: | Runs the amp at 50 watts, 25 or .5 watts, different levels depending on the volume you need. .5 watt is great for when the kids are sleeping. |
Question: | Is this suitable for an electric violin |
Answer: | There are a few more effects on the MkII and the pots for effects are now dual pots to make it easier to dial in... AMP IN is now on the Katana to allow you to plug in a multi-effects board etc and bypass the amp settings.. The "sneaky amps" available on the MkI are blocked out on the MkII.. but you get 5 more voice settings on the 5 amps available for the MkII.. newer and easier software.. Patches made for the MkI work with the MkII, but the MkII patches do not work on the MkI. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this amp have drum loops |
Answer: | I'm presuming you want to use the USB direct recording method as it is probably the best quality. I have Reaper software, but I don't see why you couldn't use Garage Band. How you connect things together depends on whether you have a Mac or PC. If a PC, you will need the Fender driver (see manual). Then you will need to configure Garage Band to get input from the LT-25 USB driver. I'm not familiar with Macs. Or you can just use the headphones out jack on the LT-25 as stated by others here. |
Question: | Can the spider jam guitar presets be installed into the spider v amps |
Answer: | Yes. The amp boots up to preset 1 (Fender Clean if you haven’t saved something else over it.) In addition you can save 2 presets to use with the foot switch and switch back and forth. So in essence you can almost kind of have 3 presets to use, but you can only switch back and forth between two of them with the foot switch after booting to #1. Very nice amp, by the way. |
Question: | I saw a you tube video of someone demonstrating auto tone match using the line 6 amplifi? Is tone match only in that model |
Answer: | You can download Fender Tone and it works with the amp via PC/USB. I use Fender Tone and I take screenshots of all my settings on the PC map images so I can refer to my own custom presets later in case they are lost. It takes all of 3 minutes to re-build any custom setting with up to two line in stomps, your amp of choice and up to two post amp stomp effects. All settings on the stomps are customizable via the software too. I have not seen a way to download and just put them in via the web though that might be available or forthcoming with new software or firmware pushes. To me it's not a big deal as I can build (rebuild) a custom setting from scratch in no time at all. The only limitation is the number of pedals you can cascade (2+2) but for this practice amp at this price I see that as no issue at all. |
Question: | What size cable is needed |
Answer: | Great little amplifier. Doe 30 preset tones that can be modified. Gret sound without any other stuff in the way. Make a Stratocaster whisper, sing or scream with feedback. Unbeatable value!! |
