Looking For Johnny: The Legend Of Johnny Thunders

Product description

Johnny Thunders was the legendary hard-living rock'n'roll guitarist who inspired glam-metal, punk and the music scene in general. 'Looking For Johnny' is a 90-minute film that documents Thunders' career from his beginnings to his tragic death in 1991. When Johnny Thunders died in New Orleans on April 23rd 1991, he left behind a mystery. Though MTV and international broadsheets reported the guitarist's demise, for many in the mainstream, Thunders was perceived as an enigmatic outlaw. He was adored by a legion of devotees and cited as an influence by at least three successive generations of musicians. Thunders refused to play the corporate game and was both elevated and damned for it. 'Looking for Johnny' is the creation of Danny Garcia ('The Rise & Fall of The Clash'). The young Spanish filmmaker was seized by a question that wouldn't let go - ""just who was Johnny Thunders?"" He spent 18 months travelling across the USA and Europe, filming interviews with fifty of the people who were closest to Johnny, building a compelling narrative drawn from first hand testimonies. The film examines Johnny Thunders' career from the early 70's as a founding member of the influential New York Dolls; the birth of the punk scene with The Heartbreakers in New York City and London; Gang War and The Oddballs. It also explores Johnny's unique musical style, his personal battle with drugs and theories on his death in a New Orleans hotel in 1991 at age 38. Interviewees include Sylvain Sylvain, Lenny Kaye, Walter Lure, Billy Rath, Bob Gruen, Terry Chimes, Alan Vega, Peter Perrett, Sami Yaffa, BP Fallon, three of his late managers: Marty Thau, Leee Black Childers and Malcolm McLaren, and many others. The film includes forty songs with historic film of Johnny, including unseen New York Dolls and Heartbreakers footage and photos. Cult filmmakers Bob Gruen, Don Letts, Patrick Grandperret, Rachael Amadeo and others contribute classic archive footage.

Johnny Winter: Down & Dirty

Based on 193 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Over 60 years ago in Beaumont, Texas, renowned bluesman Johnny Winter was kicked out of the elementary church choir for singing too loudly. I said, I m not singing too loud, these other fuckers are singing way too quiet, you can t even hear em.

I always like stories about people that drink and have drug problems and women problems, said Johnny in the film. It s just interesting.

Johnny Winter: Down & Dirty, the definitive, feature-length documentary by acclaimed Lemmy co-director and producer, Greg Olliver, will be available worldwide on March 4, 2016, on DVD and iTunes. The package will feature never-before-seen photos and bonus footage, including extended interviews and his final studio performance, a solo resonator version of the Son House classic, Death Letter.

Produced independently through Secret Weapon Films in NYC, director Greg Olliver was welcomed into the Johnny Winter family during the final two years of Johnny s life, capturing the making of his Grammy-winning Step Back (Best Blues Album, 2015), and traveling the world from Beaumont to Hong Kong. Winter continued to perform over 200 sold out shows a year until his death on tour in Switzerland in 2014.

The result is an intimate portrait of Johnny and the blues ( guitar is the only thing I was ever really great at ); his childhood ( I got in a lot of fights...Just cause you re a different color, they don t like it? You don t like black people because they re black? They didn t like me because I was too white? ); friendship and loss (Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker); relationships (Janis Joplin and his current wife of over 20 years) and his crushing addiction to heroin and methadone (learn how his manager and bandmate Paul Nelson secretly weaned Johnny off a 30-year addiction).

I grew up in Houston listening to the blues, so making a film with Johnny is a dream come true for me, says Olliver, who premiered the film at SXSW to critical acclaim. At the SXSW screening, Johnny was having so much fun. He was sitting behind me with a big tub of popcorn laughing at his own jokes and was really psyched to see himself on the big screen. At the time, there weren t many blues icons left out there, I feel very honored to have worked with him. His is a story that needs to be told! The film also features Clive Davis, Edgar Winter, James Cotton, Billy Gibbons, Warren Haynes, Luther Nallie, Joe Perry, Tommy Shannon, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks and more.

In 1968, Rolling Stone introduced Johnny as a cross-eyed albino with long, fleecy hair, playing some of the gutsiest, fluid blues guitar you ve ever heard. Jimi Hendrix sought him out as a sideman, his friend John Lennon wrote Rock and Roll People in his honor, he slept on a bag of garbage before his legendary Woodstock set and revived the careers of friends John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters through Grammy-winning collaborations. Muddy Waters recognized his talent at first glance, sparking one of the great friendships of their lives. Johnny reflected, It s the most fun I ve ever had playing music.

Johnny Mathis Live - Wonderful, Wonderful - A Gold 50th Anniversary Celebration

Based on 301 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The hit PBS concert with never before seen bonus footage & interviews available for the first time on this superb DVD. On October 27, 2006, when Johnny Mathis decided to celebrate his 50th anniversary in the music business, he gathered 2,000 of his closest friends in the music business, at the Tropicana Hotel in Atlantic City and regaled them with an amazing concert called Johnny Mathis: Wonderful! that was filmed for PBS. Here it is on this superb DVD, for all his fans to enjoy, exactly as it happened, replete with Mathis standards and unforgettable hits, and loaded with many extras, in a breathtaking presentation that will endure for years.

Back in the mid-'50s, Johnny Mathis had a choice: a star in track and field, he could try out for the U.S. Olympic team… or else he could travel from his home in San Francisco to New York, where he'd been invited to record a few tunes for Columbia Records. Zillions (OK, hundreds of millions) of sales and half a century later, it's pretty obvious that Mathis, whose extraordinary career is celebrated on Johnny Mathis Live - Wonderful, Wonderful - A Gold 50th Anniversary Celebration, made the right move. The singer was 71 when he took the stage for this 2006 concert in Atlantic City; and while age has undoubtedly taken a toll (he looks a bit like the version of himself in the Las Vegas branch of Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum--well-preserved, but kinda weird), his voice has lost little of its strength and almost none of its pure beauty. Backed by a large orchestra, Mathis moves easily through a set spanning his entire repertoire: Broadway and film numbers (a medley from Kismet, some Henry Mancini movie tunes), Brazilian sounds (the medley of "Manha de Carnaval" and "Brazil," on which he's accompanied by an excellent nylon-stringed guitarist, is one of the show's best moments), more recent material (Barry Gibb's "In the Morning," Albert Hammond's "99 Miles from L.A."), and, of course, the romantic ballads that still make lovers swoon, including what Mathis calls "the Holy Trinity" of "It's Not for Me to Say," "Chances Are," and "Misty." Mathis makes music that soothes rather than challenges; it may be easy listening, but it's far too classy and professional to be written off as schlock. There's a reason this guy has been around for so long: he's good. The DVD includes interview segments with Mathis, clips from old TV appearances, and a substantial set of bonus performances from the same concert. --Sam Graham

Johnny Got His Gun

Based on 487 reviews Check latest price

Product description

A young American soldier (Timothy Bottoms) is wounded by a mortar shell on the last day of World War I. He lies in a hospital bed as a quadruple amputee who has lost his arms, legs, eyes, ears, mouth and nose. He remains conscious and able to think, thereby reliving his life through strange dreams, memories and conversations with Jesus (Donald Sutherland), unable to distinguish whether he is awake or dreaming. Dalton Trumbo, author of the famous 1930s antiwar book Johnny Got His Gun wrote and directed this film adaptation. In 1947, he refused to testify before a congressional committee investigating alleged Communist infiltration of the film industry. Blacklisted for nearly a decade, he wrote numerous scripts under pseudonyms including Roman Holiday and Gun Crazy until he was finally credited for his work on Exodus and Spartacus in 1960.

Bonus Features:

* Includes a limited-edition reproduction of the film poster in-pack.

* Dalton Trumbo: Rebel In Hollywood (60 min. feature available for the first time in U.S.).

* Interview with star Timothy Bottoms.

* Behind-the-scenes footage with commentary by films DP, Jules Brenner & Timothy Bottoms.

* Original theatrical trailer.

* Metallica Music video for 'One', featuring footage from the film.

* 1940 Radio adaptation staring James Cagney.

Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo directed just one film in his career, but it was a doozy: Johnny Got His Gun, Trumbo’s 1971 adaptation of his 1939 novel and a work that has long been considered one of the most powerful anti-war movies ever produced. Ironically, though, there’s very little war in it, and nothing in the way of blood and guts. Instead, what we get is the tortured tale of one Joe Bonham (Timothy Bottoms), a callow 18-year-old who goes off to World War I because he believes that fighting for his country is the right thing to do. But when an officer orders some men to leave their trench and bury a dead enemy soldier, Joe is hit by a mortar shell and left without arms, legs, or a face (he can’t see, hear, or speak). Doctors assume that his cognitive brain function is gone as well, but in fact he can still think, reason, and feel (figuratively and literally); as a result, he has been consigned to a life far worse than death. The film intermingles scenes of Joe in an Army hospital as he gradually comes to understand his circumstances (we never actually see him, as he’s covered by a mask and sheets) with the various flashbacks, memories, and hallucinations he experiences during that process. The former, during which Bottoms supplies Joe’s thoughts in voice-over, are in black & white; the latter, which range from childhood memories (Joe’s father is played by Jason Robards) to bizarre fantasies like playing cards with Jesus Christ (Donald Sutherland), are in color, bathed in a kind of dreamy glow that’s countered by a heavy and persistent sense of dread. To be sure, Johnny Got His Gun has its heavy-handed, pretentious moments. But this is a smart, disturbing, and somber film that stands out in a genre (i.e., war movies) that unfortunately is never irrelevant. An excellent batch of bonus features includes an hour-long profile of Trumbo (who was jailed for contempt of Congress during the Communist witch hunts of the ‘40s and ‘50s, then blacklisted by Hollywood), a new interview with Bottoms, a 1940 radio adaptation of the story (featuring James Cagney as Joe), and even the Metallica music video “One,” which features extensive footage from the film. --Sam Graham

Review

Johnny Got His Gun is one of the most emotionally devastating films you're likely to see. You won't soon forget it, and that's either going to spur you on to some useful introspection or drive you a little mad. That's the sign of masterful writing, and Trumbo's singular achievement. --DVD Talk, April 17th 2009
