This Smart Technology electric tankless water heater is configured as a "whole home" model for climates where incoming water temperature is 62°F and above. The ECO 18 is capable of heating over 2.5 gallons per minute, which is the equivalent of one water saver shower head (with a 1.5 gpm flow) and one sink with a low inlet water temperature of 62°F, and an output setting of 105° F. Two showers emitting no more than 1.5 gpm each can be run simultaneously when incoming water temperature is above 70° F. Digital temperature control allows you to set your temperature in increments of 1°. All tankless water heaters are sized based on flow rate and temperature rise, and there is a direct relationship between the two. So if used in a cold area requiring a high temperature rise, it will be more limited in the amount of fixtures (gallons per minute) it can heat at one time compared to a warmer climate. However, when sized properly it will provide endless hot water and only consume the energy needed, giving the user complete control. Prior to purchase and installation please verify this model is the right size for the expected demand and electrical requirements. The ECO 18 requires a minimum 150 amp electrical panel for installation with 40 amp double pole breakers connected to sets of #8 awg wire. Plumbing connections are 3/4" NPT. User questions & answers
Question: | How do know which size to buy? We will supply two bathrooms, dish washer, clothes washer. What size should I choose |
Answer: | I noted someone below stating they got the largest one and they can only run one water source at a time. My guess is they installed it wrong by not getting the electric hooked up right, or maybe the unit was just defective, or they live in Alaska. I went under size with an Eco 27 a few years ago because that’s all my electric panel could handle. We have zero issues in the summer. During winter months we can only run one shower at a time and have to slowly fill a tub (maybe 3/4 fill speed). To save as much money as I am on electric bill and have unlimited shower lengths (only 1 person at a time mid-Dec to mid-March) is totally worth it. On here today because I’m thinking of upping my panel size so was thinking of going with a larger one now. Regardless, CCRC’s experience with the largest unit not working is nothing like the experience I’ve had, and again I intentionally undersized mine for the house. The website has a clear chart to explain size you need based on number of water fixtures in your home and ground water temperature. |
Question: | Can this unit supply a 3,700 sq foot home with 3 1/2 baths |
Answer: | In the lower states it can, but in the northern states, multiple simultaneous users, it will be overloaded. If you can afford a 3,700 square foot home, then you can place a unit in each appropriate demand zone and be very glad you did. I love mine, live in KY, get great supply when the water is above 60 degrees, and then it slows the flow as the temperature drops. I have dishwasher, washing machine, garden tube, 2 showers, 3 sinks and 4 people. It is better than great in the summer, okay spring and fall, and we are conservative in the winter. |
Question: | What is the power consumption of this tank-less heater |
Answer: | The instantaneous power consumption while the hot water is running is quite high (up to 18kW or 27kW depending on which model you’re looking at on this page). However, when no hot water is being used, the power consumption is 0 (or a minuscule amount to run an LED light or something). The total power consumption over the course of several days or longer should be much lower than a tank heater but the short term power usage while the heater is making hot water will be much higher than a tank heater. It’s just that the unit sits idle most of the time while a tank heater will use power fairly frequently even when no hot water is needed as the water in the tank cools off over time and needs to be re-heater fairly constantly |
Question: | remote |
Answer: | This unit does not have the ability to have a remote temperature control. |

3 Smart Steps for Endless Hot Water
Step 1: Determining your average inlet water temperature is important, this allows you to determine how well your unit will perform in your desired location. A lower inlet water temperature will require a higher kilowatt product.
Step 2: Next you will determine how many applications your unit can run simultaneously at your chosen location inlet water temperature. Tankless electric water heaters are sized for maximum simultaneous use, not maximum fixtures in your home.
Step 3: Determining specifications and electrical infrastructure is important because without the correct infrastructure your unit may not fit into your breaker panel.

User questions & answers
Question: | Ours has only been in service for less than a year - will not adjust temperature to anything above 85 Deg. F. What do you think is the problem ? kds |
Answer: | My only guess is that the rheostat (variable resistor) that the temperature adjustment knob is attached to may be faulty. If that isn't it then I don't know. Sorry. |
Question: | The warrenty says that this unit must be installed by a licensed electrician and plumber, for them to honor the "life time warrenty." why |
Answer: | Hello Bob, The reason is the same as why an innumerable number of gadgets around the world have that little "warranty void if removed" label. Because getting inside of one requires a certain level of training and expertise. Same with this unit. GadgetsGo is an authorized Ecosmart dealer. Kind regards,HenryGadgetsGo |
Question: | My house is wired 110V. What additional items do I need to purchase for the conversion |
Answer: | Just to expand slightly on prior answers, normally a residential service feed is 240 volts between the two incoming hot legs. There is also a neutral leg, which (hopefully) has zero potential with reference to ground. The voltage between either one of the hot legs and the neutral leg is 120 volts. The 120 volt circuits in your house are connected to one or the other of the two hot legs, and only one. An attempt is made to assign circuits to the two hot legs in a way that will roughly balance the load between them. The other side of a 120 volt circuit is connected to the neutral leg. There is additionally a safety ground run with the circuit, which also ties into the panel. Certain devices require more power (work product of current and voltage) than is practical to deliver using a 120 volt circuit. Common examples are your clothes dryer, and your electric stove. These devices are powered by both hot legs, with a difference in potential of 240 volts. This water heater is also such a device.STRONG BUT FRIENDLY WARNING: If you did not already know this, please don't make wiring this water heater your learning opportunity with electricity. Hire someone who knows how to do it right. Cutting corners, especially with higher currents and voltages, can lead to equipment damage, fire, and electrocution. Electricity is not magic, and you can certainly learn how to do many common wiring tasks safely on your own, but today is not the day to begin that journey. You need properly sized components, properly installed, and connected to an adequate service. Also, if you really, really foul up, you could conceivably wind up making that morning shower more energizing than you ever imagined, if you get what I mean. So newly aspiring electricians should go fix their grandmother's favorite table lamp instead. Once they have that working they can use it to to start reading books about electricity, residential wiring, and eventually, books about this stuff: http://amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_8?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=nec+code&sprefix=nec+code%2Caps%2C164 . Of course, you still have to know not to nick conductors when you strip them, and other trade craft like that ; ) . Like almost everything in life that is fun, electricity will hurt you. Sort of like all those people you dated for a while, and then wished later you had never met. |
Question: | what amp breaker is required |
Answer: | The National Electrical Code requires conductors and overcurrent protection to be sized at 100% of the manufacturer's branch circuit recommendation for tankless electric water heaters. A 60 amp breaker is the same price as a 40 or 50, it is the wire that costs more. #6 AWG wire is required for a 60 amp circuit. If you undersize the wire it could overheat and catch fire. Protect your family and follow the manufacturer's sizing for this, or any other, electrical device. Your family's lives are worth the extra money. |

Question: | Can the flow rate be adjusted up from 0.5gpm to say 1gpm or 1.5gpm (understood that the output water will be corresponding less hotter)? thanks in adv |
Answer: | This is a 199,000 btu model, a 3/4" gas line is required to have sufficient gas supply. |
Question: | degree water going in what degree will be at the tap |
Answer: | rinnai recommends the GTK03 Grundfos kit for this unit |
Question: | are any of these tankless water heaters plug in |
Answer: | I think, you need buy a WiFi module, call Rennai and ask. Circ-logic did not work for me, I had to install re circulation pipe. Because of the high minimum flow requirements, this unit did not work with any regular re circulation pump, so wasted money buying a Watts pump. And paid double for the labor. Rennai told me that I should have bought their thankless heater with re-circulation built in. |
Question: | Would you recommend this model for a shower in a guest bathroom |
Answer: | IT CAME WITH ADAPTERS ON THE TOP. NO PIPING. |

Question: | I understand this unit, the ECO 24, requires 3 - 220 (double) breakers. What amperage for each |
Answer: | 40 amp 240v breakers (2 pole breakers) |
Question: | Will this Eco 24 system work with a dedicated 100A sub-panel off a 200A service panel |
Answer: | I'm not an electrician, but in your situation, all the power is coming from the main service panel. You should consult with an electrician to calculate your maximum load. I've had no issues with my Eco 24 running 3-40 amp breakers off a 200 amp service panel. If you have a heat pump you could be pushing the limit at certain times. Be safe, consult an electrician. |
Question: | will this work to fill up small jacuzzi |
Answer: | Hello Oscar. This unit is not intended for a Jacuzzi due to the flow rate that the Jacuzzi requires. Instead, Ecosmart manufactures a product specifically for this. Question: | i have 6 bathrooms, 2 laundry rooms will one do the job? or i need two |
Answer: | Hello Raz,Thank you for your question. I am replying in less than one hour, after business hours, to expedite your request.Actually it does not matter how many bathrooms your home has. What matters is how many points of use that you will use at the same time. So to determine whether this or any tankless heater will work, just add up the total water flow rate in gallons per minute ("GPM") of all your points of use. A shower flow rate can range from 1.5 to 2.5 GPM. A bathroom sink: 0.75 GPM. A clothes washer: 3 to 4 GPM.So, if you expect only to have one shower and one sink running at the same time, this will give you at least 105F hot water, if your incoming cold water temp is above about 55F.Please let me know if I can assist you further.Kind Regards,Ross KelsonGadgetsGoP.S. If you have found my answer helpful, please prefer us when you purchase. You will continue to get priceless service after the sale. |
