12 best stick thermometer
A stick thermometer, also known as a traditional or analog thermometer, is a simple temperature measuring device that consists of a long, narrow glass tube with a liquid (usually mercury or colored alcohol) inside. The liquid expands or contracts in response to changes in temperature, causing it to rise or fall within the calibrated scale on the thermometer. This provides a visual indication of the temperature.
Here are some key points about stick thermometers:
Design: Stick thermometers are typically long and slender, with a bulb at one end that contains the temperature-sensitive liquid.
Reading the Temperature: To take a reading, you place the bulb end of the thermometer in the area whose temperature you want to measure. As the temperature changes, the liquid expands or contracts, and the level at which it stabilizes corresponds to the temperature on the scale.
Calibration: Stick thermometers have a scale marked in degrees Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F) for easy reading. Some thermometers may have both scales.
Applications: Stick thermometers can be used in various settings, including homes, offices, laboratories, and industrial environments, to measure ambient air temperature, liquids, and surfaces.
Response Time: They typically have a slower response time compared to digital thermometers. It may take a few minutes for the liquid to stabilize at the correct temperature.
Safety Considerations: Traditional stick thermometers often use mercury, which is toxic if ingested or inhaled. Newer models may use colored alcohol or other safe alternatives.
Limitations: They may not be suitable for measuring extremely high or low temperatures, and they may not provide as precise measurements as digital thermometers.
Durability: Stick thermometers can be fragile due to the glass construction. They need to be handled with care to prevent breakage.
Maintenance: They don't require batteries or electronic components, which means they are generally low-maintenance and have a long lifespan if handled properly.
Cost: They are usually more affordable than digital thermometers, making them a cost-effective option for many applications.
Overall, stick thermometers serve as reliable tools for measuring temperatures in a variety of environments. They have been widely used for decades, and despite the availability of digital alternatives, they remain popular in certain situations due to their simplicity and cost-effectiveness.

Question: | How do you recalibrate a taylor 9840 thermometer |
Answer: | take the battery out, and leave it out for a few minutes is what i did until mine stopped working totally. |
Question: | How deep does the tip need to be inserted to get a valid reading |
Answer: | To get the best reading I find it needs to be in the center of the meat or whatever you're cooking. For instance if I'm cooking a roast I put it in about half way and wait for the temperature to get to it's reading. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Does it have an auto shutoff or a manual on off |
Answer: | It will auto turn off if left alone for a little while Also has a manual shut off. |
Question: | We accidentally threw the instructions away before reading them, so this might be a silly question. Can this go in the oven? Looks like it would melt |
Answer: | This is not the type of thermometer that you leave in the oven with what ever your baking. With this type you have to open the oven once in a while and stick the probe in meatiest part to get the correct temp. After you get a reading you pull it out, turn it off and clean the metal probe, put it back in its sleeve and wait to use it again. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could I glue this to my van window |
Answer: | I doubt it. We thought it was a great item, but it didn't last long on our door and we threw it away. It would take some super glue because it didn't stick to a regular window as it was supposed to. |
Question: | what is the thickness of this pdt? I want one for sliding glass door or window and not sure if the depth will work? thanks |
Answer: | This thermometer works fine on my outside sliding glass door. I have it positioned at the upper left hand exterior corner of the door above my door opening handle. Because of that location it does not interfere with my screen door. On the other return panel I stop the door with a track block before the thermometer comes in contact with it. I fastened mine with Elmers glue and it has not fallen off . . . yet. There is also a way to calibrate the needle that the Taylor does not mention. I set it according to a reading from a better outdoor mercury thermometer by turning the needle from the back with a pair of pliers. It has been up for 6 months through temp ranges from 0 to 100 here in Austin, TX. I don't know what the pacific daylight time (pdt) is but the depth is about 1 & 1/4 inches from the glass door to the face of the thermometer when mounted. I hope this helps. It's a good value item. |
Question: | How do you calibrate the thermometer to the correct temperature |
Answer: | Stuck on my window for a few months then popped off and broke. I recommend this one instead: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002JEZ1O?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00 Electro-Optix WSII Optix WeatherStation II Thermometer. Bought this one in January 2015. Still stuck on my kitchen window! |
Question: | Is this battery operated |
Answer: | No batteries or electricity needed. |

Question: | Can this stay in the meat in the oven |
Answer: | Yes. I check my pool water and surrounding deck almost every day. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the diameter of the thermometer dial |
Answer: | It doesn't say on the thermometer and I no longer have the card it was on. However, it works wonderfully well. There's nothing on the metal that says made in China, so I'm assuming it's American made. |
Question: | Can this be left in the meat, while in the oven |
Answer: | This wonderful old fashioned thermometer is designed to be put into a roast or whatever and left there for the entire cooking time. Since I never cook meats or poultry in an oven turned higher than 450 degrees, I really don't know how high a temp. you can safely keep it in for. The gauge on the thermometer goes to 180 degrees which is very well done meat & good for poultry. I would take the thermometer out of the oven when the gauge hits 180 degrees just to be safe. |
Question: | WHAT IS THE RESPONSE TIME.How many are in a case |
Answer: | The thermometer is to be inserted into the meat you are cooking. It doesn't matter if you are cooking the meat on a grill or in an oven. It shows the temperature of the meat, not the grill or oven. Hope this helps. |
Question: | How do you know if it is calibrated to an accurate temp |
Answer: | No. It's got the red fluid. Colored alcohol, I think. |

User questions & answers
Question: | where can I buy a replacement battery |
Answer: | Most drug stores keep this type of battery. Also in larger towns there is usually a "Battery Store" such as Batteries & Bulbs, etc. |
Question: | What is the point of the hold feature? why would i hold a temperature |
Answer: | Holding temp is the temp at which food is supposed to be kept at. Example, for cold food FDA standard is 41 degrees. So the holding temp feature on the thermometer is a temp that can be set, in this case, 41 degrees. If the temp rises above 41 degrees the thermometer will start beeping as a warning. |
Question: | Can you carry these thermometers through your bag at the airport |
Answer: | Hmm, good question, but never had the need to, so sorry can't advise. But, it is very sharp and contains small electronics, could flag a response. |
Question: | Can you calibrate this thermometer to 32 degrees in an ice bath |
Answer: | no to my knowledge but I did not try |
