12 best handheld refractometer with brix scales
A handheld refractometer with Brix scales is a specialized instrument used for measuring the sugar content, concentration, or refractive index of liquids, particularly in the context of food and beverage production. The Brix scale is commonly employed to determine the sugar content in solutions, primarily in the production of beverages like fruit juices, wines, and soft drinks.
Here are some key points about handheld refractometers with Brix scales:
Principle of Operation: Handheld refractometers work based on the principle of measuring the bending or refraction of light as it passes through a liquid sample. The degree of refraction is directly related to the concentration of dissolved solids, such as sugar.
Brix Scale: The Brix scale is a measurement scale used to express the sugar concentration in a solution. It is typically calibrated to measure the percentage of sucrose by weight. For example, 10 degrees Brix represents a solution containing 10 grams of sucrose in 100 grams of solution.
Applications: Handheld refractometers with Brix scales are widely used in various industries, including the food and beverage industry, agriculture, and quality control. They are essential for assessing the quality of fruit juices, honey, maple syrup, and other sugary products. Winemakers also use them to monitor grape ripeness and determine the potential alcohol content of wines.
Operation: To use a handheld refractometer, a small sample of the liquid is placed on the refractometer's prism or sample plate. When the instrument is held up to a light source, the refracted light is measured, and the Brix value is displayed on a scale inside the device. This value indicates the sugar concentration of the sample.
Temperature Correction: Temperature can affect the accuracy of refractometer readings, so many handheld models include automatic temperature compensation (ATC) to account for variations in sample temperature.
Maintenance: To ensure accurate readings, it's important to calibrate and clean the refractometer regularly.Calibration involves using a standard reference solution to verify its accuracy.
Variations: In addition to Brix scales, handheld refractometers may have other scales, such as the refractive index (nD) scale, which is used for a broader range of applications beyond sugar concentration measurement.
In summary, handheld refractometers with Brix scales are valuable tools in various industries for measuring sugar concentration in liquids. They help maintain product quality and consistency in food and beverage production, agriculture, and quality control processes. Proper calibration and maintenance are essential to ensure accurate results.

Dual-scale digital refractometer with scales for measuring both Brix (to 85) and refractive index (to 1.500). Both the Brix and refractive index scales can be used to measure a nearly unlimited number of fluids.
The Palm Abbe PA202 is a dual scale digital refractometer with scales for measuring both Brix and Refractive index. The PA202 measures Brix from 0 to 85 Brix, which is considerably higher than the Brix scale in the PA201. Brix is a measure of sugar concentration but is also used for measuring the concentration of many other fluids such as metalworking fluids, industrial lubricants, and other industrial chemicals.
Also included in the PA202 refractometer, is a second scale for measuring the refractive index of a fluid. Refractive index is a physical property of a fluid that is related to the speed at which light passes through it. The denser the solution, the slower light passes through it and the higher the refractive index.
The Palm Abbe refractometer is fast, convenient, and easy to use. Simply place a drop or two of fluid in the stainless steel well and press a button. The custom-designed microprocessor delivers a nearly instantaneous readout in degrees Brix. Nonlinear temperature compensation is automatic and insures that fluids read between 0 and 50 °C (+32 to 122 °F) are measured accurately.
Calibration is automatic and does not require the use of special calibration solutions, or tools. The Palm Abbe refractometer automatically calibrates itself to water and is ready to use in seconds. No screws to turn and nothing to adjust.
Scale 1 Fluid: Refractive Index; Unit of Measure: Refractive Index (nD); Range: 1.3330 to 1.5000; Resolution: 0.0001; Precision: +/-0.0001

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you calibrate? It is way off when comparing to multiple readings from other devices |
Answer: | Hi Brian: we recommend a Zero Set Calibration daily as follows: 1) ensure measuring surface is clean and dry, 2) place a few drops of distilled water on the measuring surface, 3) close the cover and let sample/instrument equalize temperature, 4) turn on unit (press GO), press MENU going to screen that says "Set Zero?", 5) press GO to set. We would like to hear more about your issue. Let us know what phone number we can ring you at and one of our tecnical staff will follow-up. Best, Mark |
Question: | Does this device measure the sugar content of a liquid that contains alcohol? Will it measure concentration in grams/ounce or is there a conversion |
Answer: | Refractometers ca only measure binary fluids. Our PA202 is a two scale unit that measures in BRIX or Refractive Index so either reading would have to be converted to any other unit of measure. If your liquid has enough alcohol to change the refractive index then the refractometer will not be able to read the fluid. If you are measuring wine, we do have custom programmable instruments to measure wine. Please give us a call at 800-358-1100 for further information. Thank you. |
Question: | This meter could be used to measure the sugar in corn mash |
Answer: | Yes, this refractometer can be used to measure sugars using the Brix scale. It also has a Refractive Index scale. We don't know as much about using refractometers for brewing, but I found a very good discussion of this at https://byo.com/article/refractometers/ Possibly you need a hydrometer. |

The eMaple Digital Maple Syrup Refractometer can be used at the tree tap or tank to measure maple sap, for pre-process monitoring of reverse osmosis, in the sugar shack to determine when to draw maple syrup from the boiler, or during maple syrup bottling and testing.
The principle unit of measure the maple syrup producer is interested in is degrees Brix. Brix is a measure of the percentage of sucrose, by weight, dissolved in a sugar/water solution. In the case of maple sap and maple syrup.
Hydrometers have long been used in maple syrup testing; however, a refractometer is more accurate than a hydrometer, requires a smaller sample size, eliminates sources of error, is easily cleaned, and reduces the time that it takes to measure maple sap and maple syrup.
The eMaple refractometer features two scales, both with a range from 0 to 85 Brix. The first scale is a conventional Brix scale is intended for accurately measuring maple sap or maple syrup with a fluid temperature at or under 30 'C (86 'F).
The second scale is a high-temperature scale for testing syrup above 30 'C (86 'F). The MISCO eMaple Refractometer approaches hot maple syrup measurement in two ways. First, the eMaple has special electronic circuitry to prevent the display of readings before the temperature has stabilized. Second, because of the difficulty in reporting stable readings of hot maple syrup, there is a second scale based on hot syrup.
Scale 1 Fluid: Maple Syrup Temp less than 86°F; Unit of Measure: Brix; Range: 0 to 85; Resolution: 0.1; Precision: +/-0.1
Scale 2 Fluid: Maple Syrup Temp >86°F; Unit of Measure: Brix; Range: 0 to 85; Resolution: 1; Precision: +/-0.5

User questions & answers
Question: | can I test Saltwater with this device |
Answer: | This product(RHINO HR103)cannot be used to test Saltwater, It is used to test the sugar content of various non-mixed liquids. The measuring lines of Saltwater are: 1. Salinity(0 - 100‰) 2. Chlorinity(0 - 57‰) 3. Specific gravity(1.000 - 1.070) 4. Refractive Index(1.3330 - 1.4200nD) You can refer to the above scale name to find the product. |
Question: | Does this refractometer measure sugar content in brewed kombucha |
Answer: | Dear Customer, When making Kombucha, the sugar will be converted during the fermentation process, so we want to know the sugar content after fermentation. However, Kombucha is a mixture of multiple substances, and there are particles in the liquid, which will affect the accuracy of the measurement results. We are also not sure of the accuracy of the hand-held refractometer for the measurement of the sugar content of Kombucha. It can only be said that the refractometer can be used as a reference tool for measuring the sugar content of Kombucha. Rhino Technology |
Question: | Can we test fresh apple with this device |
Answer: | Dear customer, You can test fresh apples with a 0-32% Brix refractometer. We know that the measurement range of good apples is about 6% to 18%. The higher the Brix value, the better. And you can also choose 0-18% Brix refractometer if you pursue a better accuracy. Any questions, Please let me know. Rhino Technology |
Question: | Does the refractometer come calibrated for honey, will it require recalibration, under what conditions and what expertise added equipment is necessary |
Answer: | 1. The measurement range of this product ( Rhino HR103 ) is 0-32 Brix%, and honey requires a higher measurement range ( 58-90 Brix% ). To measure honey, in addition to Brix%, you also need to know the amount of Baume degree(°Be)and water content. Honey has degrees, which is called Baume degree, a measure of honey concentration. The water content and sugar content of honey can be used as an important mark for classification and identification of honey. Honey Baume is an important indicator of honey quality. The higher the honey Baume degree, the higher the sugar content of honey. The lower the water content of honey, the higher the proportion of honey, the better the quality of honey. On the contrary, the lower the Baume degree of honey, the lower the sugar content of honey, the higher the water content and the smaller the proportion of honey, Honey is relatively poor quality. The measuring lines of Honey are: a. Brix(0 or 58 - 90%) b. Water content(38.0 - 5.0%) c. Be'(33.0-48.0) d. Refractive Index(1.3330--1.5177nD) You can refer to the above scale name to find the product. 2. It is best to choose refractometer with ATC (Automatic Temperature Compensation) function. You can very easily in the 50-86 ° F (10 to 30 ° C) at room temperature for calibration. If the refractor you purchased does not have an ATC function, you will need to get the correct calibration value at the current room temperature by referring to the table in the product description. Our products ( Rhino HR103 ) have been calibrated before they leave the factory. If you need calibration, the method is as follows: a. Open the cover plate, drop distilled water one or two drops on the suface of the prism. b. Close the cover plate and prees it lightly, then adjust the correcting screw to make the light/dark split line coincide with the null line. c. Open the cover plate clean the surface of prism by soft cotton flannel, Calibration completed. 3. I only know that Refractometer are an important tool for honey production. I'm not sure if there are other important tools that need to be added. |
