User questions & answers

Question: Can you use gas station diesel with this heater
Answer: You are able to use diesel #2 with this unit.
Question: Can this heater be used indoors without venting when using diesel? I have seen mixed reviews on the odor when using diesel but more opinions are nice
Answer: I use one indoors in a 1900 ft2 shop. Mostly I use diesel fuel but ignition with straight diesel is problematic with this and most multi fuel units. Diesel actually burns hotter and cleaner (less smell) than kerosine. I mix about 3 gallons of diesel with 2 gallons of kerosine. It a hotter cleaner burn that costs a lot less than straight kerosine.
Question: Does this use a wick like smaller kerosene heaters do
Answer: No, totally different burner type. It uses a powered pump/burner assembly and blows heat out one end, brings in burner air from the other end. Called a "salamander" heater in the construction trades. Also is MUCH noisier than a wick type heater!
Question: How long does a fill tank last
Answer: About 6 hours. Takes a tank and a third to run a 9 hour day.

User questions & answers

Question: Door doesn't expose wick anymore with the new no lift mechanism so how do you manually light when auto ignition fails
Answer: i open the door on the side, raise the screen and then stick the grill lighter in touching the wick to light the heater. Do it every night
Question: I truly need help. The new no lift mechanism does not expose the wick for me to manually light. How can I light this with a match with this NEW model
Answer: Through the little hinged door there a heavy like coil spring that's attached to screan, if you don't see the spring rotate the screan until it's close to the hinge of the little door. Lift the coil upward and with a long nose bbq lighter light the wick, it is easier then I can explain it.
Question: How large of a space have you guys heated this with? Do you think it can cover 1000 sq/ft
Answer: I have been using this product in my living room/dining room area which is roughly 600 to 700 square ft. After about an hour we are sweating! We have discussed moving this into a different part of the house bc of the tremendous heat it puts off. We have been able to turn off all other heat sources so far. Gentle radiating heat. I really don't think it will have a problem heating 1000 feet of space probably more! Great product! Great quality!
Question: How big is the fuel tank
Answer: 1.9 gallons. I don't recommend this heater the flame adjustment sucks. I'm buying a dyna glo better flame control and you can get 12hrs from same size tank barely 7 with this one and it cost more.

User questions & answers

Question: How long will 20lb propaine last on lowest setting in insulated room
Answer: Say a 10' x 10' room; about 12 to 16 hours. You MUST have some fresh air coming into the room or the O2 depletion will shut the heater off. Propane need air to burn just like most flames.
Question: Is this safe in a 300 square foot cabin as the sole source of heat
Answer: This is very large for a room of that size. I would recommend the 20,000 BTU model. That is ASIN B01DPZ5B3. These are designed as supplemental heat but it could be used for your application.
Question: Does this product have built in regulator
Answer: You must use an external regulator. You need some other hardware if you are going to use it on the floor. Here is what you need: ASIN:B0002YPAFY Rectorseal 23631 1/4 Pint Brush Top T Plus 2 Pipe Thread Sealant, ASIN:B0058DIGPU Anvil 8700137808, Steel Pipe Fitting, Nipple, 3/8" NPT Male x 4" Length, Black Finish, ASIN:B005R21QLS Mr. Heater 12-Feet Hose/Regulator Assembly, P.O.L. and Hand Wheel x 3/8-Inch Female Pipe Thread. If your heater did not include an elbow, get a 3/8" ASIN:B005C2U67I Anvil Malleable Iron Pipe Fitting, Class 150, 90 Degree Street Elbow, NPT Male x NPT Female, Black Finish. Put sealant on the outside threads only. Screw the elbow into the heater so that the opening faces the front of the heater. Screw the nipple into the elbow. Attach the feet that came with the heater. Screw the hose onto the nipple. Attach the other end of the hose to your propane tank. Check all connections with soapy water before lighting.
Question: Will this burn in high elevation
Answer: Yes as long as there is enough oxygen. Oxygen above 12000 feet altitude becomes thin and supports combustion less efficiently.

Blue Flame Vent Free Heaters

Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.

Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.

There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.

The Blue Flame heater warms the air. It doesn’t radiate the heat like an infrared unit. It can be put in a narrow area because the heat rises and warms the area from the ceiling down. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.

Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers

Question: How do you turn it on...do you need to use a match
Answer: You don't need to use a match if you install batteries at the back of the heater to power igniter. Press the lever at the front to match the Ignition mark, to ignite the wick. If you do not have batteries you have an option to ignite with matches - please carefully read instructions manual for details. you can upload it from our website www.sengokula.com .
Question: Best replacement wick
Answer: First, all the kerosene heaters marked "110" or "HMN 110" are basically the same, just sold by different companies; so, they take the same wick. There is a web site that is devoted to all sorts of kerosene devices, heaters, stoves, lamps, etc. The guy who runs it is extremely knowledgable and can answer questions. There is a difference in the quality of wicks. You should get a CUI wick made in England by Hattersley, as they are the best quality. They cost around $11. The wick you want is listed as "1X". FOR WICKS: http://www.milesstair.com/by_make/HEAT_MATE_Kerosene_Heaters.html, HOME PAGE: http://www.milesstair.com/kero_heaters.html
Question: Does this kerosine give off carbon monocide
Answer: ALL propane or kerosene heaters give off a small amount of C.O.2, BUT indoor rated heaters would not be LEGAL or popular if there were dangerous levels !!! AND after heating my home for the past 15 years using kerosene heaters I found NO problems, even my four cats lived 'til 18 and 19 years old !!! BUT,,,be sure to use ONLY K2 kerosene NOT "Coleman Camp Fuel" as it is white gas NOT kerosene and may cause an explosion. Kerosene is ALWAYS marked clearly as kerosene, and the K2 designate is assumed and seldom needed to be on the label except in industrial situations. ALSO, kerosene heaters are VERY widely used in asian countries because the are reliable. I hope this relieves any fears you may have !!
Question: How many hours will it run if kept on low? High
Answer: i do not run my heater on low or high. the objective is to set the wick for the most efficient burn, a blue flame extending just above burner. Most of the radiant heaters claim they will operate for 12 to 15 hours on one filling of the fuel tank (approximately 1.2 gallon). i have been able to average 20 hrs.

User questions & answers

Question: How much square footage does it cover
Answer: You have to calculate how cold it is outside and how well the space is insulated. 23,000 BTU is a tremendous amount of heat that is suited for heating a large uninsulated garage or workshop in very cold weather. Heating a house even a large one is better controlled by using two smaller10,000 BTU heaters in different rooms.
Question: What is the difference between this unit and the HMN
Answer: I wondered that too. On the HMN-110 page, Amazon refers to this one (CTN-110) as a newer model and drops the "Heat Mate" name.
Question: can it be used with diesel fuel
Answer: In order to use diesel fuel in any kerosene heater or lamp, a 100% cotton wick is needed. Using a wick with fiberglass stiching at the top will constantly clog up rapidly. Try Miles Stairs wickshop.
Question: How long will it run on the lowest setting
Answer: There isn't really a low setting, there is only an optimum position for the wick to be set at. If its adjusted too high it will smoke and have incomplete combustion and too low it will smell and can produce carbon monoxide (i have tested this with a handheld co meter). Anyways if its set to its ideal wick height it should burn for 12 hours or so. Mine seems to burn longer on the expensive home depot K1 which is mostly low odor mineral spirits. And just for a little piece of mind I take CO measurements frequently while running mine and it never exceeds 1 ppm concentration, even when taking the reading in the hot gases coming out of the top of it. If you decide to burn the gas station K1 its a whole different story. I have had readings as high as 40 ppm with that stuff!! Sorry to be long winded.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I store the smaller, 1lb propane tanks on my terrace porch, possibly in a box, overall? in cold winters and hot summers
Answer: For maximum safety, my recommendation is to store propane containers in a weather protected location, such as garage or shed with some natural ventilation. Propane is a highly flammable liquified petroleum gas that vaporizes and expands many-fold very quickly if released to atmospheric pressure, and will form a highly explosive mixture if released in a confined space without outside ventilation. If then ignited by a small spark such as a light switch, the resulting explosion may be catastrophic. There are on-line photos of boats that have exploded from propane leaks in the confined space of a boat cabin with catastrophic results including death of occupants. The cabin top and sides have literally been blown to pieces in such cases. New, sealed bottles of 1 lb size are reasonably safe, but once opened or partly used it is best to store away from occupied spaces. Although the probability is low, the consequences of failure are unacceptable. 20 lb propane containers should never be stored indoors. Play it extra safe and store propane bottles in a garage or outdoor shed. BJG (PE, ichemical engineer, inactive, retired)
Question: can i hook a large propane tank to his
Answer: Yes, any size propane tank can be a source for it when plumbed correctly. The simplest way to go is using the F273704 hose directly off most tanks. That hose needs nothing else and goes direct from the tank to the heater. This model heater only accepts high pressure gas thru the "disposable tank" connection, so other hoses with that connection can be used as well as the "filter" F273699. The "filter" is to take out oils coming from most rubbers in hoses where the high pressure "squeezes" the oil out, but the 704 hose is made "oil-free" to avoid that issue. FYI I tried running this off a regulated low pressure source, but with it on "high" the glow was like "low" setting normally (showing a lack of gas coming thru). So if you have a low pressure source, the "Big Buddy" models have a connection point for such thru a quick disconnect using hoses like F271802 or F271803, but not this model (this one needs high pressure gas to get enough thru it's disposable tank port).
Question: How long with the heater run on low with a propane small cannister
Answer: Best guess is 4-5 hours on low. I sat in a hunting blind for 2.5 hours and the 1lb propane canister was about half empty.
Question: Does anyone know or understand how is it this type of propane heater can be used indoors without causing carbon dioxide poisoning
Answer: As soon as the weather gets cold, I put my Big Buddy Heater on a stand & use a Mr. Heater 12' hose with regulator running to a 20lb. tank in living room. I use the hose with the low pressure regulator on it & hook it up to the quick connect fitting. I have 2 20lb tanks in mint condition, and rotate them as needed. This will be my 7th winter using it. Old windows & doors let air in and I have a carbon monoxide alarm near by. Also use a leak detector to check all connections after hooking up a full tank. If it's really cold, I'll start it on high for a short time, then run it on medium & it keeps living & dining room warm. Cuts my oil bill down greatly.

User questions & answers

Question: Where can I buy a wall thermostat
Answer: Hi, this unit is manufactured in China. Please visit our website www.honeywellhomecomfort.com for more information. Thank You !
Question: Where can I purchase external wall thermostat kit
Answer: It does have a drain plug in the bottom of the water reservoir. It's also easy to roll the reservoir separately from the whole unit to a tub or outdoors to empty it that way. I love mine. Just set it up a few days ago and it's working like a charm. Very important to read all operating information that comes with the unit to get optimum performance. That same information is available a the Amazon purchase site to read before purchase, as well.
Question: Will it run without electricty
Answer: The fan unit is not heavy, but the lower unit water resevior is very heavy when filled.
Question: I am looking to replace my rinnai rhfe-431wta gas direct vent wall furnace with this model. do i need to purchase suggested extra parts
Answer: This would not work well in NYC. The blower fan is excellent, but it is still just a fan. The cooling is done via evaporation that requires very low ambient humidity, below 50% at least, the lower the better. These coolers work in arid climates of the southwest like Arizona and Nevada. You will want an Air Conditioner in a humid climate like NYC. http://home.howstuffworks.com/home-improvement/heating-and-cooling/swamp-cooler.htm

User questions & answers

Question: Where do I get one for home to detect natural gas leak. Must be battery operated as have no 120v outlets near ceiling
Answer: Yes it works fine
Question: Is this a us style plug
Answer: No, this only detects gas. Check out the 70-742 KIT. (Must get the kit. The kit has the valve). This has a valve and detector. It will turn off the gas if the sensor detects a leak.
Question: What is the operating temperature range of the gas detector? Can it work normally in cold places
Answer: No it is not. The MTI SA-8 is 6.5 inches wide x 3.5 inches tall x 1.25 inches in depth. This unit is 12 inches wide x 8 inches tall x 4 inches in depth.
Question: should i be alarmed if the detector starts to beep at 3 then go to 4 and continue to beep at
Answer: Of course, you can. This uint certainly won't know the difference between a kitchen in an RV, or a home! As long as you supply it with the appropriate power source 12v..it will be fine.

User questions & answers

Question: will it work on a steam boiler
Answer: The good & the bad in a 40' motorhome in AZ, season by season. Sep-Nov: this is a fantastic cooler, raising our 8% humidity to a comfortable 24%. Cools 100 degree temp down to mid 70s/low 80s. Dec-Feb/Mar stabilizes humidity at around 20-25 and reduces 85-90 afternoon temp to low 70s. Mar-mid June, fantastic cooler, raising humidity from 8℅ to 24 and keeping temp down to low 80s compared to outdoor temp of up to 100+. It does strain though when temp reaches mid-90s and above. Mid Jun-late Aug/mid September forget about it! No evaporative cooler cools during monsoon because the air is already saturated. Adding humidity only adds misery. This is the same reason why evaporative coolers don't work in parts of the country with humidity over 40%. But I still run the fan without the cooling to move air around and reduce humidity a bit. Bad stuff: in all seasons, our very hard water results in calcium buildup requiring weekly scraping and cleaning; a very small pinch of salt in the water pan helps by changing calcium molecules but if more than a pinch is used it will result in a sodium buildup that's just as bad. Calcium buildup is heaviest in the corrugated water pad but it can only be cleaned lightly and only along the outside edges. Also, the 6 L water pan has to be refilled hourly due to such low humidity. The warmer the air, the higher the water consumption. This is quite inconvenient. And the unit MUST sit LEVEL to work efficiently and to prevent leaking. Not somewhat level - very level in both directions. I keep a 2"x2" 99¢ t-level on the top of mine. Good stuff: Excellent fan with wide distribution of cool air. I rarely add the ice pack since air flowing around the water pan already keeps the water cool. Very lightweight unit, under 10#, easy to pick up to move so I didn't install the casters. It only draws 65W so is inexpensive to operate. However, I power it with solar so that I won't lose cooling in a power outage. My favorite feature is the deionizer air purifier. Having had to use a HEPA purifier for the last 50 years, with only an ineffective ozone-producing ionizer as an alternative, I love that the manufacturer includes this now that the technology is available beyond commercial use.
Question: is this suitable for steam
Answer: I'm wondering if mine is a different model. There's no flap on the top. It almost sounds like the ice pack goes in the water tank. Does anyone have a model like that?
Question: Here is a question not asked. I have a kerosene salamander heater and need to messure air fuel pressure, will it work
Answer: Thanks for your question! The filter that comes with the cooler looks like a "honeycomb" and appears to be a kind of reinforced paper with no brand name on it, just cut to fit the space. BUT, it has a terrible odor coming off of it, even after running it through a few cycles. I have "hacked" the light blue evap cooler pads that Walmart sells for the larger evaporative coolers and just cut it to size. It is much more absorbent and there was never an odor from the very start. BTW, I also have a Luma evap cooler and have done the same hack for that one and it seems to work much better than what came with the unit. A standard sized wetting pad from Walmart is only about six dollars and you'll have plenty of material to cut more pads throughout the cooling season!
Question: Can this be used for a steam boiler
Answer: Hi anne1111: I totally agree with you on the instructions not being very clear. "Hidden" on a small chart, it states "6L" which I read as six liters of water for the reservoir but the good thing is that on the front of the cooler (it looks like a vertical black line at the bottom of the picture,) there is a "min / max" line that bobs up and down to show you how much water is in the unit. Let me just say, I have a LUMA evap as well as this little unit and they work on the same principle of air passing over a wet pad but this one does not require as much maintenance as the LUMA for a lot less money. Just as added information, I replaced the wetting pad that comes with the cooler with something I found at Walmart called Dura-Cool (it's a blue pad) for larger evap coolers and then just cut it to fit the COSTWAY. It gets wetter than the pad that came with the unit so that when the air passes through the Dura-Cool pad it feels cooler (and doesn't give off an odor). Be sure and freeze the cooling bottles that come with the unit for extra cold water to pass over the padding! I now live in the Southwest and like the moist air it provides along with our regular A/C. Hope this helps!
