User questions & answers
Question: | What type of probes are you guys using with these? Will 100mhz probes work on this 200mhz machine |
Answer: | 100mhz probes will physically work with this oscilloscope (I use a 100mhz differential probe with this due to cost limitations), but be well aware of the limitations of the probes, readings will be less accurate at 100mhz and nearly unusable at the 200mhz range of the oscilloscope. The oscilloscope does come with 4 ok probes that are rated at 200mhz. You are always better off using probes that are rated at least as high as the oscilloscope or higher, your results depend on it. |
Question: | Can this model be upgraded by the USB |
Answer: | I have seen 1 update to the SDS1202X-E since I have had it. The update was done by placing the update file on a USB drive, and then selecting the file. It was quick and easy. |
Question: | Is there a way to use this as a spectrum analyzer ? an sa can cost easily as much as this scope. i am impressed |
Answer: | You realize this scope only has an input analog bandwidth of 200 Mhz. The typical low end spectrum analyzer about ($1500) has a bandwidth up to 1.5-2.0 Ghz. SA's also generally come with a tracking generator, which outputs a signal at the exact same frequency being measured at that moment, so you can pass it through a device to measure it's spectrum attenuation. For frequency's below 200 Mhz, the FFT function on this scope will give you some of the same data a SA would give under some conditions. A SA has an enormously more sensitive input. If you connect an antenna to a SA input, it gives a very good display. An antenna connected to the input of this/most oscilloscopes will not show much of anything, as there is not enough signal strength. A SA will also generally have a much higher resolution spectrum,. If you show 200 Mhz of spectrum on this scope, with a 1 million sample FFT, that gives 1/2 million FFT buckets, so each must be about 400 Hz wide. In favor of the oscilloscope, if you're only dealing with low frequencies, a typical spectrum analyzer has a lower frequency limit, like often in the 5 khz range, so is useless below that. For audio work, a scope with a good FFT is way more useful than a RF SA. The FFT function on this scope looks a lot better than on the Rigol scopes due to it's much larger sample size limit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the rated voltage range for this scope |
Answer: | 50 volt max |
Question: | Does it have any math functions? I want to measure AC current and voltage but have a wattage be the final output |
Answer: | This is a one channel oscilloscope. I haven't found a way to trigger it with an external signal. If you want to find power, you can measure voltage, then use a shunt to measure current, and then manually find the product of those two. But you won't have a phase relationship; your answer will be not much better than if you'd done it with a multimeter. Also, be careful when you measure current: I don't know for sure on this scope, but most scope inputs are single ended, which could mess with you if you don't arrange the shunt carefully. |
Question: | there are many power supplies, which specific one is for this O scope |
Answer: | power supply came with unit |
Question: | Can it use a 9v battery |
Answer: | Yes, but you need a 9v battery adapter to a barrel plug, and make sure it's center positive. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this work on a pc if attached to the usb port |
Answer: | Do you mean for DC power? No. It requires about 9v dc, not the 5v usb provides. Do you mean you want the display to be on the PC over usb? Also no. The display has no provisions to be exported. This is a stand-alone device with no external computer access. |
Question: | Can this be used to check how clean the <50 vdc output is from an ac adaptor |
Answer: | It can detect DC power supply below 50V |
Question: | Will this allow me to test automotive (can bus) signals? i haven't yet discovered the upper frequency limits of can |
Answer: | Hello friend, the frequency range is 0-200KHZ, and with 1x probe, the maximum voltage that can be measured is 50V. This is the instruction for this oscilloscope: https://mega.nz/#!uJ1BnSyb!hBUGGcFN4F9HgdcOjE8RERXCvYkpOLrb4yrsKTOT3c4, please download it and see if it meet your needs. |
Question: | Why is it called "Partially open-sourced" in description |
Answer: | Partially open-sourced is referring to the accessibility and manipulation of the operating system. In a closed system, the source code is locked and cannot be manipulated. In a pure open system everything can be manipulated. Partially open is a blend. In this case it means some of the source code is open to the user to customize features and function but some aspects of the source code are locked. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I know it can do an fft but does it show frequencies for the harmonics in a waveform? what's the frequency resolution for the fft? thanks |
Answer: | Normally the FFT is done on the screen data, so only about 1024 points. I read there is a settings to use 16K FFT points. This means the maximum FFT frequency resolution would be sample frequency/16K. The competing Siglent scope is available (2 channel version) or on (as of 12/07/17) backorder (4 channel version), and they both have a 1M FFT size, so much higher frequency resolution. The 2 channel version also has 200 Mhz of analog bandwidth. You also can download the samples, and use some external program for the FFT analysis. Another option is to spend $150 and get the home (or even cheaper student version if you're a student) version of Matlab, although I'd verify if the FFT function needs any extra packages (which cost extra). You could talk to the scope over Ethernet via LXI to read the sample data. In theory, you could make a 12M signal capture, and your FFT resolution would be sample rate/12M, so if you sample at a gigasample, that comes to 1,000,000,000/12,000,000=83 hz FFT resolution on like a 50 Mhz signal. Of course sampling 1 gigasample on a 50/100 Mhz bandwidth scope may be overkill, so you might reduce the sample rate, improving the maximum FFT resolution. Also note the window function may degrade the resolution some (like in the 2x range), depending on which window function you use. The window function with the best frequency resolution tends to also have large sidebands (spectrum leakage into FFT bins next to a peak). I think the question is how much frequency resolution do you need? At what frequency range? An oscilloscope FFT is generally not an RF spectrum analyzer. For things like audio signals, this scope may give very useful frequency resolution. Note that if you're looking at digital signals (square waves) the harmonics are all odd, and the 50/100 Mhz bandwidth runs out fast (like a 10 Mhz square wave clock, has 30 Mhz, 50Mhz, 70Mhz, 90Mhz harmonics), so 50 Mhz of bandwidth barely can show the 5th harmonic). |
Question: | Trying to decide between this and ds102e 100mhz 2ch. will be used with arduinos, raspberry pi and ble peripherals. can you offer a pros/cons for each |
Answer: | I definitely prefer a 4-channel scope. For example: you can see SI, SO, CS and SCLK all at the same time on a SPI interface. |
Question: | This unit has 12 mpts of memory upgradable to 24 mpts, how do you do that? where can i buy this option. thank you |
Answer: | RigolNA is currently (Dec 2017) including free option BND-MSO/DS1000Z which "includes serial decode, deep memory, record mode, and triggering". I don't know if this is the same as 24 Mpts or if this option is included with this item. |
Question: | I'm new to electronics as a hobby.should i go with this model or the 100mhz model for the same price. the books say go with a 100 mhz scope |
Answer: | Well, the hardware of the 50MHz, 70MHz, and 100MHz versions of this scope are all identical actually, with the bandwidth limited by software. If you bought the 50MHz version (this item), you wouldn't be the first person to accidentally stumble upon web pages telling you how to generate and enter a license key that unlocks 100MHz bandwidth and a few other features...What you don't want is one of the older DS1000E series scopes, as they lack intensity-graded display and have only 2 channels, not 4. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is max. freq. of circuits this scope provides useful/predictable results? 200khz? 400khz? some reviews say >that is squirrely |
Answer: | It works very well up to about 20 or 30 MHz. Above that, you'd be using a timebase setting below 100ns/div and it goes into a software-based triggering/display mode and can have a few issues. Limited memory depth means that it will alias, depending on input frequency and timebase setting. For example, at 100ns/div, it aliased for input signal components above 31.25 MHz in my tests. At 10us/div it aliases above 1.25 MHz. Etc. BUT - if you just hit the "Auto" button, it quickly and accurately showed just about anything I threw at it :-) Good little scope ! |
Question: | Is it easy for a newbie to use vs something like nscope |
Answer: | I am not really a Newbie since I have been a "Ham" radio operator since the 1950s, but I have found this unit quite easy to use. The controls are very self explanatory and, although sometimes the manual is a little confusing, if one takes their time reading it they will get the answe in using the equipment. I like mine and use it frequently. |
Question: | What is the more realistic bandwidth with reasonable accuracy, e.g. +/- 5% or better |
Answer: | +/- 5% is probably asking a lot. But I found it to do maybe +/- 10% in many tests (except at 200 mV/div where mine seems to have a vertical gain error quite a bit more than that). Frequency-wise, the answer is basically around 20 or 30 MHz for sinewaves and works well at timebases of 100ns/div or longer. At a timebase of faster than 100ns/div, it appears to enter a software-assisted/based triggering/display mode that struggles with some waveforms. At 100ns/div or longer, it works very nicely (although it will alias if you are on a timebase setting that results in more cycles than the 320 width display will support). So I would say 20 or 30 MHz sinewaves (maybe 1 to 5 MHz for digital waveforms that have lots of harmonics if you want sharp edge displays). If you push it, and have a pure sinewave signal, you can get it to show stuff up to about 125 MHz before aliasing starts at the 6ns/div setting, but the vertical readout will be no-where near 5% accuracy. |
Question: | What is the battery life like? does it use usb charging |
Answer: | It does use USB charging. Not sure how long the battery lasts as I tend to use it about a half an hour at a time, but it feels like it should last about 6 hours. |
