13 best radioactive detectors
Radioactive detectors, also known as radiation detectors or radiological detectors, are instruments designed to detect, measure, and monitor ionizing radiation in various environments. These devices are crucial for safety and environmental monitoring in a wide range of applications, including industrial, scientific, medical, and security settings. Here are some key points about radioactive detectors:
Types of Ionizing Radiation: Radiation detectors are capable of detecting different types of ionizing radiation, including alpha particles, beta particles, gamma rays, and X-rays. Each type of radiation requires specific detector technology.
Geiger-Müller Counters: One of the most common types of radiation detectors is the Geiger-Müller (GM) counter. These handheld devices are sensitive to various forms of radiation and produce an audible click or beep for each detected radiation event.
Scintillation Detectors: Scintillation detectors use crystals or liquids that emit flashes of light (scintillations) when they interact with ionizing radiation. Photomultiplier tubes or photodiodes then convert the light into electrical signals for measurement.
Ionization Chambers: Ionization chambers are used to measure the total amount of ionization generated by radiation in a gas-filled chamber. They are commonly used in medical physics and research applications.
Solid-State Detectors: Solid-state detectors, such as semiconductor detectors, use materials like silicon or germanium to directly convert ionizing radiation into electrical signals. These detectors are highly sensitive and suitable for precise measurements.
Dosimetry: Radiation detectors are crucial in medical dosimetry to measure the radiation dose delivered to patients during medical treatments like radiation therapy. They ensure accurate and safe treatment delivery.
Nuclear Medicine: In nuclear medicine, detectors are used to image the distribution of radioactive tracers within the human body. These detectors help diagnose and treat various medical conditions.
Environmental Monitoring: Radiation detectors are deployed in the environment to monitor background radiation levels, detect contamination events, and assess the impact of nuclear incidents or accidents.
Security and Nuclear Safeguards: Radiation detectors play a vital role in security applications, such as screening cargo for radioactive materials at ports and borders. They are also used in nuclear safeguards to prevent the unauthorized acquisition of nuclear materials.
Radiation Alarms: Many radiation detectors are equipped with alarms or alerts to notify users when radiation levels exceed predefined thresholds. This is crucial for the safety of personnel working in radiation-prone environments.
Radiation Safety: The use of radiation detectors is essential for ensuring the safety of workers in industries where radiation sources are present, such as nuclear power plants and radiography facilities.
Calibration and Quality Assurance: Radiation detectors require regular calibration and quality assurance procedures to maintain their accuracy and reliability. These procedures help ensure that measurements are consistent and traceable.
In summary, radioactive detectors are essential instruments used to detect and measure ionizing radiation in various applications, including medical, industrial, scientific, and security fields. They play a crucial role in ensuring safety, monitoring environmental radiation levels, and supporting medical treatments and research. Different types of detectors are chosen based on the specific radiation types and measurement requirements of each application.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this measure the radiation level present in gemstones |
Answer: | Not all gemstones emit high enough levels of radiation that can be discerned above ambient levels of radiation and it depends on the actual level of radiation the stone emits. Stones that have been exposed to radiation to change their color will probably not register. I have some uranium marbles that are not detected by this counter. My wife was subjected to a PET scan, last year and read 790 CPM from a distance of 6 feet. |
Question: | can I use this to measure Fukushima radiation in seafood |
Answer: | I've read articles regarding radiation in seafood indicating the levels you read may be may be misleading. The GMC-300 will measure this radiation. Here in Northern Indiana the ambient level is normally 30 - 40 CPM. As shown in the video, levels in sea life can be higher. http://www.opb.org/news/article/scientists-say-stop-worrying-about-fukushima-radio/ Rick |
Question: | I'm a novice wanting to check for radiation levels. Is this device easy to understand? What can I use this for to measure for radiation |
Answer: | The GMC-300 is easy to use and low priced as an entry level radiation detector. I use mine to monitor background levels of radiation as I have yet to find an highly active source. Here in central BC, Canada I get 14 to 22 cpm, with a high of 30 cpm. It appears to decrease after a rain fall. The only thing missing with the GMC-300 is a radiation standard but I can understand why. |
Question: | Would this device be able to tell if there was leftover radiation from a nuclear blast or contamination? Or radiation from dirty bombs |
Answer: | I’m a radiation protection technician. If this device works the way that it says it does then it would still not detect alpha or neutron radiation. If you suspect something making into your food or water then I would be most concerned with Alpha particles and this doesn’t measure those. You shouldn’t have to worry about neutron radiation though and unless you’re using it to measure something you’re ingesting then alpha radiation really isn’t an issue. Geiger- Mueller counter can detect beta and gamma/X-ray radiation. I’d be interested to see how they measure Beta since you really need a gas chamber to measure it accurately. I would be most worried about beta and gamma radiation if you’re talking about an area that may have had nuclear weapons detonates years ago. This claims it can measure for those. If it can it would be a good device to determine if your surroundings are still giving off radiation. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does the dosimeter work? Does it have to be turned on to track your dosage? Do you have to carry it at all times for a time period, like a week |
Answer: | Great question! Any kind of nuclear dosimeters, including SOEKS 112, have to be turned ON and on the person/in the environment in order to record the radiation dosage. It has to be carried around to accumulate the dose. SOEKS 112 can show real time radiation or the accumulated dose with a single press of a button. |
Question: | At what number on the display should I turn and run? Is this the same unit model sold by "Mirasafety |
Answer: | You should see numbers below 0.40 uSv/h in the USA for natural radiation background. It doesn't mean you have to run yet but definitely something to investigate as to why the numbers are higher than naturally should be. If you see numbers higher than 1 uSv/h - it's a good idea to increase your pace with the toes pointing away from the object or the area with high radiation. SOEKS is the original manufacturer of this portable Geiger counter, including the ones that are sold by Mira safety. It's always better to get our detectors directly from the manufacturer as we guarantee that they are stored properly and up to date with the latest updates. Regards, Andrew from SOEKS USA |
Question: | Will it or any software track history on iOS device |
Answer: | No, this is a standalone Geiger counter/Dosimeter that makes and keeps all the measurements on the meter itself. |
Question: | Why it's so slow? You can die before you see real radiation numbers |
Answer: | When High radiation is detected, you’ll know it right away - there will be a spike in the readings, the audio clicks will become very frequent, and the visual indicator (LED) will blink rapidly. No way to miss that! For subtle changes in the radiation background the maximum time for the most accurate readings takes only 2 minutes, usually less. 120 seconds is not enough time to get a lethal dose even during the Chernobyl disaster. And the best part, that this small Geiger counter (dosimeter) reads up to 999 mSv (999 Sv), while the Geiger counters initially used in Chernobyl only read up to 34 mSv, hence the delay for the alarm and the emergency response. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work in India/ Europe |
Answer: | Yes, this meter will work anywhere in the world. This one version will measure both 50 and 60Hz power regions. |
Question: | Will this pick up UHF and microwave |
Answer: | Thank you for your question. This meter will detect all three types of electromagnetic pollution.; AC magnetic, AC Electric and RF/Microwave. |
Question: | Does this pick up emf/rf at a distance, or do you have to hold it right next to the source |
Answer: | This meter will pick up EMF/RF at any distance, as long as the field is strong enough. |
Question: | Does this read digital RF from cellphone towers, wifi, wireless LAN, etc |
Answer: | The TF2 RF section is great for measuring the EMF emissions of cellphone towers, Wi-Fi and mobile phones. When reading RF emitted by digital devices, such as mobile phones, Wi-Fi routers and smart meters, the Peak Measurement (small numerals in the upper-left of the display) is of more interest than the Field Measurement (large numerals at the bottom). The information from digital RF devices is transmitted in brief packets that occur irregularly (perhaps once per minute with smart meters and several times per second with Wi-Fi transmitters or mobile phones that are in use). The Peak Measurement detects these packets and displays the strongest packet for several seconds before resetting itself. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be plugged in to external power |
Answer: | No, this EFM Meter can not be plugged into an outer power source. |
Question: | I'm a person with ehs, i want to know if this meter might be good to read the radiation from cellphones, high tension lines, cell phone towers, 5g? ty |
Answer: | Honestly, you probably could read the output of them in Milligauss or Microtesla but you would have to get pretty uncomfortably close. For reading radiation of those things and not endangering yourself I imagine you would need a pretty powerful EMF Meter. After doing some quick research on this, you would need something along the lines EMF Detector with the detectable range of something like 10 Hz to 10-12 GHz. For radiation coming from Cell towers you will be in the 50-10,000 MHz Radiation from high tension lines you will be looking at under 5 MHz by a great deal |
Question: | Can it detect the variables in earth's magnetic field |
Answer: | Thinking logically about it you would think yes because weather it be earth's magnetic field or a magnetic field from say inside your house from an appliance they would both be detected. But that is just my thoughts about it so you would need an answer really from the manufacturer. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What's the difference between this and $300+ rf meters? my 13yo son is doing a science fair project on cell phone radiation. thanks |
Answer: | This EMF meter measures 60 Hz (up to 300 Hz) frequencies. That's basically power line type electro-MAGNETIC radiation. The cell phone radiation is RADIO frequency radiation in the Mega or Giga-Hz range. So, this meter will not work for his project. |
Question: | Can this be used to detect electrical radiation from electrical boxes on the side of the apartment building where we are living? we are concerned that there might be a lot of electrical toxicity coming from that into our unit |
Answer: | Yes, but it only detects EMFs. There is no such thing as electrical toxicity, but there is ionizing radiation, from high voltage electrical fields, or high strength magnetic fields, hence electromagnetic field. Just look up the current data for recommended levels of exposure, then set the meter for that level. Then examine the areas you occupy for the length of time required for exposure limits. If you exceed the limits, replaced the device causing the problem, or relocate the occupied area for less total time. Another comment talks of all the different devices. I can tell you right now, every single AC device produces EMF. All of them. It's not about whether you are exposed, it about how much, and for how long. The alarm clock thing has been known for over 40 years. Just like CFLs if used within less than 15in is cancerous. |
Question: | Can it be used to detect ghosts |
Answer: | This will not detect ghosts, even if you believe it will. This detects electro magnetic fields. So unless you believe ghosts are produced every second by electricity, the Earth is surrounded by a ghost, and everyone's phone houses ghosts, this will not help you. |
Question: | Has anyone had a professional come and collaborate your reading from this meter |
Answer: | Yes. I tested it with calibrated equipment. It reads 0.0 milligauss up to 1.6 milligauss of ambient magnetic field. In other words, you might think there's no field when the meter reads zero, even though there could be as much as 1.6 mG present. At higher fields, it actually reads 2.5x too HIGH (reads 250 in a 100 mG field for example)). WAY inaccurate. Also the confused "English" manual claims it also reads "electric" field. It doesn't. And it doesn't read RF, microwaves, cell towers, etc. either. However, the meter is poorly shielded, so when placed near a leaky microwave oven, the meter circuit is interfered with, and it sometimes reads something, although the number is meaningless. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the frequency range of this device |
Answer: | Hello Rafael, Thanks for reaching out to us! Frequency range is 50hz to 3000Mhz. Please let us know if there's any other way we can help. Kind regards, Sherrylyn Customer Service, American Lifetime |
Question: | how many does this come with |
Answer: | One, and its very entry level. I would recommend a trifield meter or something more advanced instead. |
Question: | Hello, is it work for detecting smart meter radiation level |
Answer: | Yes, it should detect a magnetic field similar to WiFi. It will only detect the smart meters electrical field when close by. Word of advice, if you buy this meter do not power on the unit close by what may be putting off these fields. Instead, power on the detector further from any other signals then walk towards what you want to measure. |
Question: | Is this also an rf device or strictly an emf device? my understanding is emf is electrical and rf is radio frequency like wireless |
Answer: | While this is a great way to count the emf power. Some of who are interested in radio have been using an alternate solution for the last 60 years. Simply tune a portable AM radio to an unused. quiet spot on the dial. Turn the volume up, then walk around your home or plant and "listen" to the EMF. Use the radio like a Geiger counter to point toward the offenders. You can actually hear the differences, and rate intensity by the loudness of the sound. Interestingly, some will have a buzz, some while whine, some will pulse, some will gurgle. Some will radiate a foot or less, some will radiate 6 feet or more. Interesting to listen to the difference between a wireless phone charging pad when the phone is on and then off the pad. The same can be done in your car, with the radio tuned to a quiet "AM" spot as you drive past power transformers, overhead high tension power lines and etc. During electrical storms, you can pick up lightning from more than 100 miles away as a sharp "crackle". If lighting is closer, count the seconds from the "crackle" until you hear the boom to calculate the distance in miles. Still a device like the Cambridge Labs EMF meter are very useful, but there are interesting ways to compliment it or even without it by using portable AM radios. Some of us have been using this AM system for many years to route out interference to our shortwave radios and etc since the late 1950's! |

User questions & answers
Question: | All i want to know if this detector gq emp-390 will detect 5ghz wifi signal and 5g cell phone |
Answer: | Yes it will detect 5GHz signal but not in all modes of operation. If it is the predominant source then the general Radio Frequency RF mode reading will reflect it. If it is a source mixed with others than all sources will be reported together as one value (sum/average over time...unknown. most likely average). It will not detect it in spectrum analyzer, by frequency, and show it's individual power level. Spectrum analyzer will detect 2.4GHz wifi. 5GHz is out of range of spectrum analyzer as is everything greater than 2.5GHz. It might detect presence of 5GHz data packet bytes in digital mode but I don't know for sure, have not tested this. |
Question: | Can it tell you how much emf your cell phone emits |
Answer: | yes it does, in 3 scales. some readings read a voltage per meter and another is electro-magnetic reading, I searched through alot and after receiving this I found it to be the best affordable technology in its class, and it even automatically identifies the difference between cell phone and power line EMF in digital readable format. |
Question: | Will this device analyze a 5 gig wifi signal like it does a 2.4 or |
Answer: | Yes, it does analyze 5 Ghz frequencies. If you are asking whether it will analyze 5G as in 5th generation Millimeter Waves, the answer is NO.. 5th Generation 5G will use frequencies between 30Ghz and 300Ghz... You can get one that costs about $40,000... As in, they are not available to the public . |
Question: | Is the 5g wifi signal the same as the new 5g cell phone signal? will it measure the new 5g phones? it is confusing: it says: "rf up to 10 ghz |
Answer: | The 5G wifi is referring to 5Ghz Wifi, and it is covered by this meter RF band. The 5G cell phone network is referring to 5th Generation cell phone network, it is nothing to do with 5GHz, basically its base band is much higher than 5Ghz |
