10 best dosimeters

Dosimeters are devices used in the field of electrical testing, industrial safety, and scientific research to measure and record exposure to various forms of ionizing radiation, such as X-rays, gamma rays, and beta particles. These devices are critical for monitoring and ensuring the safety of individuals who work in environments where radiation exposure is a concern. Here are some key points about dosimeters:

  1. Radiation Monitoring: Dosimeters are primarily employed to monitor and measure ionizing radiation levels. Ionizing radiation has enough energy to remove tightly bound electrons from atoms, potentially damaging living tissue and increasing the risk of cancer or other health issues.

  2. Types of Dosimeters:

    • Film Dosimeters: These contain photographic film or other materials that change in response to radiation exposure. After exposure, the film is developed, and the density of the exposed areas is used to determine radiation dose.
    • TLD Dosimeters (Thermoluminescent Dosimeters): These use materials that emit light when heated after radiation exposure. The amount of light emitted is proportional to the radiation dose.
    • Electronic Dosimeters: These are digital devices that provide real-time monitoring of radiation levels. They display dose information on a screen and may also log data for later analysis.
    • Pocket Dosimeters: These are compact, portable dosimeters that can be worn on clothing or carried in a pocket. They provide immediate readouts of radiation exposure.
  3. Occupational Safety: Dosimeters are commonly used by individuals who work in environments where radiation exposure is a concern, such as nuclear power plants, medical facilities (radiation therapy, radiology), and industrial settings (non-destructive testing, nuclear research). Workers wear dosimeters to ensure that their radiation exposure remains within safe limits.

  4. Regulatory Compliance: Many countries have regulations in place that mandate the use of dosimeters for workers in radiation-prone industries. These regulations set exposure limits and require monitoring to ensure compliance.

  5. Dose Records: Dosimeters provide a historical record of an individual's radiation exposure over time. This data is essential for tracking cumulative exposure and assessing the potential health risks associated with radiation exposure.

  6. Radiation Safety Programs: Dosimeters are an integral part of radiation safety programs in industries and facilities where radiation is used. These programs include regular monitoring, training, and the establishment of safety protocols to minimize exposure.

  7. Emergency Response: Dosimeters are also used in emergency response situations, such as nuclear accidents or radiological incidents, to assess the level of radiation exposure for responders and individuals in affected areas.

In summary, dosimeters are essential tools for monitoring and measuring ionizing radiation exposure in various industries and research fields. They play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of individuals working in radiation-prone environments and help maintain compliance with regulatory standards for radiation exposure limits.

User questions & answers

Question: What's the difference between this and $300+ rf meters? my 13yo son is doing a science fair project on cell phone radiation. thanks
Answer: This EMF meter measures 60 Hz (up to 300 Hz) frequencies. That's basically power line type electro-MAGNETIC radiation. The cell phone radiation is RADIO frequency radiation in the Mega or Giga-Hz range. So, this meter will not work for his project.
Question: Can this be used to detect electrical radiation from electrical boxes on the side of the apartment building where we are living? we are concerned that there might be a lot of electrical toxicity coming from that into our unit
Answer: Yes, but it only detects EMFs. There is no such thing as electrical toxicity, but there is ionizing radiation, from high voltage electrical fields, or high strength magnetic fields, hence electromagnetic field. Just look up the current data for recommended levels of exposure, then set the meter for that level. Then examine the areas you occupy for the length of time required for exposure limits. If you exceed the limits, replaced the device causing the problem, or relocate the occupied area for less total time. Another comment talks of all the different devices. I can tell you right now, every single AC device produces EMF. All of them. It's not about whether you are exposed, it about how much, and for how long. The alarm clock thing has been known for over 40 years. Just like CFLs if used within less than 15in is cancerous.
Question: Can it be used to detect ghosts
Answer: This will not detect ghosts, even if you believe it will. This detects electro magnetic fields. So unless you believe ghosts are produced every second by electricity, the Earth is surrounded by a ghost, and everyone's phone houses ghosts, this will not help you.
Question: Has anyone had a professional come and collaborate your reading from this meter
Answer: Yes. I tested it with calibrated equipment. It reads 0.0 milligauss up to 1.6 milligauss of ambient magnetic field. In other words, you might think there's no field when the meter reads zero, even though there could be as much as 1.6 mG present. At higher fields, it actually reads 2.5x too HIGH (reads 250 in a 100 mG field for example)). WAY inaccurate. Also the confused "English" manual claims it also reads "electric" field. It doesn't. And it doesn't read RF, microwaves, cell towers, etc. either. However, the meter is poorly shielded, so when placed near a leaky microwave oven, the meter circuit is interfered with, and it sometimes reads something, although the number is meaningless.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the manual referred to in the advertisement, come with the unit? If not what is it and where is it obtained. Thanks
Answer: Of course it comes with a manual.
Question: Is it reusable
Answer: To keep card ready to use, put in freezer till you're ready to use it.
Question: I have a meteoritw and several fossils id like to check for radiation. Will this suffice
Answer: Possibly! Some radiation such as x-rays, alpha and beta particle would most likely show, but other radiation such as fast or slow neutrons would not. I don't believe gamma rays would be detected either, I'm not sure, I don't remember.
Question: Is this one time use only
Answer: For immediate detection it is a one-time use because the chemical-based sensor strip does not reset. However, it is also a cumulative sensor (a dosimeter) and will continue to darken if it later detects higher levels of radiation. For instance, if today it sensed 20 mSv of radiation it would alert you within a minute. And the sensor bar (the strip between the two rows of color bars) would stay at the that level. If later in the day it detected 50 mSv of radiation the sensor strip would darken and alert you within a minute. Again, the sensor strip would stay at that level. If the next day it then detected higher levels, say 2000 mSv, it would darken yet again and alert you. But it does not reset back to zero. This detector was designed for first-responders, hospital staff, nuclear facilities, the military, and any one else who needed an inexpensive way to alert one to radiation.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this detect non-ionizing radiation
Answer: No. The non-ionizing radiation (light, radio waves, Electromagnetic fields e.g. microwaves) are not detectable by geiger counters. Geigers detect ionizing radiation such as Beta, Gamma and X-ray. Illustration: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D2vqAz_UwAEUAhU.jpg Detector for non-ionizing Electromagnetic emissions such as microwaves, household appliances and power lines: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007ZBETWC
Question: Can this be used to detect radiation in food? I use Apple products, will I get on line support
Answer: If someone puts a radioactive source in your food you might detect it, but most food is less radioactive then the concrete in the walls of your building. Also food could be used to shield this device from cosmic radiation, which means you would see a lower count rate in the presence of food.
Question: does this device test NORM or radiation in pipe used in the oilfield business
Answer: Generally yes, while this depends on radionuclides in such pipe, ie radium, radon, uranium, potassium and thorium. The Geiger detects Beta, Gamma and X-ray radiation, which are emitted by all aforementioned materials except for Radon gas.
Question: Will there be software available for Apple devices
Answer: No

User questions & answers

Question: Why do they show it in use near hv transformers? does it also detect em emissions in that range
Answer: No, you would need and EMF (electromagnetic field) detector for that: https://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Electro-Magnetic-Detector-Monitor/dp/B007ZBETWC/ EM emissions are non-ionizing radiation, which means the particles do not have enough charge to cause damage to tissue. Geiger counters detect ionizing radiation, the dangerous kind: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, X-ray, etc. Illustration: https://quartarad.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/ionizing-radiation.jpg https://quartarad.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/types-of-radiation.gif I hope this clarifies matters a bit!
Question: Is this detector EMP proof
Answer: As a former designer of electronic circuits, I can opine with 99% certainty that it is NOT EMP proof. I say that because the outside is plastic (a non-shielding material), and the LCD screen also would not block radiation. I think to add EMP protection would raise the cost considerably! FYI, I store my detector, when not in use, inside a metal container (with other electronics) because of its vulnerability to EMPs.
Question: What is the difference between this model and the RD1503+ without dosimeter model
Answer: This model does have the dosimeter function (see "DOSE" on the LCD screen), which means that it can switch between immediate radiation levels ("NOW") and accumulated dosage over time ("DOSE").Very useful when working in environments with even slightly raised radiation levels (warehouses, junk yards, granite canyons, treatment plants, etc.)
Question: Can it detect all of "alpha", "beta", and "gamma
Answer: It detects beta, gamma and X-rays. No Alpha because it is redundant and unnecessary. Alpha particles are relatively "large" and won't pass even through a sheet of paper or a layer of skin, let alone plastic casing of a detector. It also emits only a few inches from source. Illustration: http://images.slideplayer.com/32/9849845/slides/slide_10.jpg One would need a special "pancake" appliance to detect it, and those cost up from $ 500. In my opinion, those are only useful for conducting experiments in a lab environment, or under some very specific circumstances. Another reason for not detecting Alpha: nearly every radioactive isotope that emits Alpha will also emit a lot more beta and/or gamma (usually both), which will be detected by the sensor. Hope this clarifies matter a bit.
