12 best metric micrometers
Metric micrometers, specifically outside micrometers, are precision measuring instruments used for dimensional measurement in various industries and applications related to test, measure, and inspect processes. These instruments are essential for obtaining accurate measurements of objects with high precision. Here's what you should know about metric micrometers:
Principle of Operation: Metric micrometers operate on a simple principle. They consist of a C-shaped frame with a spindle and an anvil. When the spindle is turned, it moves toward or away from the fixed anvil, allowing for precise measurement of the distance between the two surfaces.
Metric Measurement: Metric micrometers are designed to measure dimensions in the metric system, which includes units like millimeters (mm) and micrometers (µm). This makes them suitable for applications where metric units are preferred or required.
Precision and Accuracy: Metric micrometers are known for their high precision and accuracy. They can typically measure to within micrometers (µm) or even fractions of a micrometer, making them essential for industries where tight tolerances are critical.
Spindle Lock: Many metric micrometers are equipped with a spindle lock mechanism. This feature allows the user to lock the spindle in place after taking a measurement, ensuring that the reading is not accidentally changed during handling.
Thimble and Sleeve: The thimble is the rotating part of the micrometer that is turned to make measurements. The sleeve contains the linear scale with markings, and as the thimble is rotated, it moves along the scale, providing the measurement reading.
Digital vs. Vernier: There are two main types of metric micrometers: digital and vernier. Digital micrometers have an electronic display that provides a direct digital readout of the measurement. Vernier micrometers have a graduated scale and require the user to visually interpret the measurement by aligning scale markings.
Zero Setting: Metric micrometers should be zeroed or calibrated before each use to ensure accurate measurements. This involves ensuring that the micrometer reads zero when the spindle and anvil are in contact.
Applications: Metric micrometers are used in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, machining, quality control, and research. They are suitable for measuring the dimensions of objects like metal parts, plastic components, machined parts, and more.
Calibration: Regular calibration of metric micrometers is essential to maintain their accuracy. Calibration involves comparing the micrometer's measurements to a standard of known dimensions and making any necessary adjustments.
Care and Maintenance: Proper care is required to keep metric micrometers in good working condition. They should be stored in protective cases, kept clean and free of contaminants, and handled with care to prevent damage to the delicate measuring surfaces.
Accessories: Some metric micrometers come with additional accessories, such as extension rods for measuring deep recesses, interchangeable anvils for measuring special shapes, and calibration standards.
In summary, metric micrometers, especially outside micrometers, are precise and accurate measurement tools used in various industrial and scientific applications. Their ability to provide highly accurate measurements in the metric system makes them invaluable for ensuring the quality and precision of manufactured components and products.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it have a ratcheting barrel to control pressure |
Answer: | Mine also came with 2 blank spaces. Maybe for extra if u buy them |
Question: | What's the anvil diameter |
Answer: | No it will not measure a shot gun barrel bore. It is to large an instrument with a min bore of 35mm. Best to use a dial caliper. |
Question: | Does it measure in thousandths of inches or just metric MM's and i have to convert it |
Answer: | Yes, the 52-646-500 is .0001". I bought this gauge for that very reason. It is very touchy. Note the maximum measurement is only .050"If you would like pictures I can send you some of my gauge, just send me your email |
Question: | What is the accuracy |
Answer: | Michael, Mine came with the 1.4 Anvil installed in the Measuring Head so the slot in the case was open. There are two slots in the case for 2.0, one is on the very left and the other is on the very right. Mine came with the 2.0 in the slot on the very left leaving the slot on the very right open. Check both slots, if no 2.0 in either, then you are missing it. Mine came with the 2.2 in the slot second in from the right. It looks like you are missing the 2.2. Question: | Are there any accessories we can buy to add on this model to measure the inside diameter of our item |
Answer: | This item does not come with a standard. It comes with the micrometer, battery, plastic case and sleeve. |
Question: | Can you use this to measure the thickness of paper |
Answer: | It's easy to connect and you don't need to cut into the insulator, but the problem I had with the tool is: the signal is so sensitive that I wasn't able to tell if the wire was cut, because all the wires I was testing were in a harness |
Question: | Is it supposed to come with the standard bar |
Answer: | i was using it very successfully at over 70 feet. The lines I was tracing were up and over in a building. So i really do not know the exact distance. but it worked great |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this tool good for engine rebuilding? Such as checking crankshaft journals etc? Would you use the ball for measuring rounded parts like the crank |
Answer: | No this is just a bore gauge not a run out gauge this just checks hole size basically. |
Question: | Would tool be suitable to measure the thickness of plastic film? The plastic is approximately5.5 millimeters thick |
Answer: | No, we don't. Sorry. |
Question: | What is the diameter of the shaft? I want to use this for measuring valve shims, they' sit on top of the valve stim |
Answer: | Hi, the product is good although it doesn't have the brand on it. Please let me simply explain it. We have many distributors across North America. And a lot of them require us not to put our brand on anywhere of the products so that they can print or engrave their brands on the products and sell it under the name of their company or their brands. The product has the same quality of the products as that of Accusze branding. Anyway, you may return it if you don't have faith in it. Thanks for your understanding. |
Question: | What is the purpose of the ball? Why would you use it or not |
Answer: | Yes you can as long as your cylinder bore diameter is within the size range. Accuracy is .0005” There are many videos on the internet that describe the methods for checking your bore diameters and out of round. You will also need a good caliper for measurement. If you’re still uncertain, check with a machine shop. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there an advantage of this 103-129 versus the Mitutoyo 102-707? Both have the same specs. but this one has a different shape and is less expensive |
Answer: | the little barrel on the end of the larger is ratcheting on mine. Works fine. My only complaint it it's hard to read, it has little tiny tick marks you have see if it is on a half mm or a whole tick . Larger scale that rotates goes up to .5 mm so you have to add that to a half tick or whole. So if for example it is past a half tick and the scale says .31 then it is .81. |
Question: | Can you confirm that the rotating thimble, or any other major component is made of plastic on this model as noted by one reviewer? Thanks |
Answer: | .250 |
Question: | Where are these manufactured? Are they made in China |
Answer: | It can just measure 0-25mm and needed to be converted. |
Question: | Can someone confirm if the thimble is plastic? It’s not stated in description. Sorry if duplicate |
Answer: | Dear customer, the accuracy of the micrometer set tool is 0.01mm, thank you. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be set to absolute zero? in the product details it states: "2. zero: zero button. press the button. ...default starting value |
Answer: | no - not that I know of |
Question: | is it from Chinese |
Answer: | It measures lengths from 0 to 25mm to the nearest 0.001mm. I.e., to the nearest micron. So the answer to your question is: YES. This is so since the entire interval from 16microns to 40microns falls well within the device's 0mm to 25mm measuring range, and the read out is in thousandths of a millimeter. |
Question: | Does it have a clutch on the ratchet to disengage the spindle when it senses the object being measured |
Answer: | No it measure 4-5 inches you will have to but a mic that 3-4 inches |
Question: | Can it be used to measure plastic bags from 16 micros to 40 micros |
Answer: | The markings are laser etched (engraved). They are permanent. |
