Which as the name suggests, cannot be penetrated by water (like what's in the steam) Whatever could possibly make it through the drape is caught by the towel. This is so the instruments can be subjected to extreme heat without actually getting wet. Its important to remember that water breeds life, and while you may think boiling your instruments is a good idea, it's not. There are many "extremophile" species of bacteria that thrive in high temperature environments and will remain alive in the water. Sterilization is a multi step process that involves using powerful disinfectants, intense supersonic vibrations, and ultimately dry steam heat exposure, before actually being achieved. While it may seem fine to use "sterile" instruments at home. I would strongly suggest buying prepackaged sterilized instruments for single uses if you wanted to do any at home medical procedures that you probably shouldnt be doing by yourself.
