User questions & answers
Question: | Will this measure the radiation level present in gemstones |
Answer: | Not all gemstones emit high enough levels of radiation that can be discerned above ambient levels of radiation and it depends on the actual level of radiation the stone emits. Stones that have been exposed to radiation to change their color will probably not register. I have some uranium marbles that are not detected by this counter. My wife was subjected to a PET scan, last year and read 790 CPM from a distance of 6 feet. |
Question: | can I use this to measure Fukushima radiation in seafood |
Answer: | I've read articles regarding radiation in seafood indicating the levels you read may be may be misleading. The GMC-300 will measure this radiation. Here in Northern Indiana the ambient level is normally 30 - 40 CPM. As shown in the video, levels in sea life can be higher. http://www.opb.org/news/article/scientists-say-stop-worrying-about-fukushima-radio/ Rick |
Question: | I'm a novice wanting to check for radiation levels. Is this device easy to understand? What can I use this for to measure for radiation |
Answer: | The GMC-300 is easy to use and low priced as an entry level radiation detector. I use mine to monitor background levels of radiation as I have yet to find an highly active source. Here in central BC, Canada I get 14 to 22 cpm, with a high of 30 cpm. It appears to decrease after a rain fall. The only thing missing with the GMC-300 is a radiation standard but I can understand why. |
Question: | Would this device be able to tell if there was leftover radiation from a nuclear blast or contamination? Or radiation from dirty bombs |
Answer: | I’m a radiation protection technician. If this device works the way that it says it does then it would still not detect alpha or neutron radiation. If you suspect something making into your food or water then I would be most concerned with Alpha particles and this doesn’t measure those. You shouldn’t have to worry about neutron radiation though and unless you’re using it to measure something you’re ingesting then alpha radiation really isn’t an issue. Geiger- Mueller counter can detect beta and gamma/X-ray radiation. I’d be interested to see how they measure Beta since you really need a gas chamber to measure it accurately. I would be most worried about beta and gamma radiation if you’re talking about an area that may have had nuclear weapons detonates years ago. This claims it can measure for those. If it can it would be a good device to determine if your surroundings are still giving off radiation. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why do they show it in use near hv transformers? does it also detect em emissions in that range |
Answer: | No, you would need and EMF (electromagnetic field) detector for that: https://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Electro-Magnetic-Detector-Monitor/dp/B007ZBETWC/ EM emissions are non-ionizing radiation, which means the particles do not have enough charge to cause damage to tissue. Geiger counters detect ionizing radiation, the dangerous kind: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, X-ray, etc. Illustration: https://quartarad.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/ionizing-radiation.jpg https://quartarad.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/types-of-radiation.gif I hope this clarifies matters a bit! |
Question: | Is this detector EMP proof |
Answer: | As a former designer of electronic circuits, I can opine with 99% certainty that it is NOT EMP proof. I say that because the outside is plastic (a non-shielding material), and the LCD screen also would not block radiation. I think to add EMP protection would raise the cost considerably! FYI, I store my detector, when not in use, inside a metal container (with other electronics) because of its vulnerability to EMPs. |
Question: | What is the difference between this model and the RD1503+ without dosimeter model |
Answer: | This model does have the dosimeter function (see "DOSE" on the LCD screen), which means that it can switch between immediate radiation levels ("NOW") and accumulated dosage over time ("DOSE").Very useful when working in environments with even slightly raised radiation levels (warehouses, junk yards, granite canyons, treatment plants, etc.) |
Question: | Can it detect all of "alpha", "beta", and "gamma |
Answer: | It detects beta, gamma and X-rays. No Alpha because it is redundant and unnecessary. Alpha particles are relatively "large" and won't pass even through a sheet of paper or a layer of skin, let alone plastic casing of a detector. It also emits only a few inches from source. Illustration: http://images.slideplayer.com/32/9849845/slides/slide_10.jpg One would need a special "pancake" appliance to detect it, and those cost up from $ 500. In my opinion, those are only useful for conducting experiments in a lab environment, or under some very specific circumstances. Another reason for not detecting Alpha: nearly every radioactive isotope that emits Alpha will also emit a lot more beta and/or gamma (usually both), which will be detected by the sensor. Hope this clarifies matter a bit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does the dosimeter work? Does it have to be turned on to track your dosage? Do you have to carry it at all times for a time period, like a week |
Answer: | Great question! Any kind of nuclear dosimeters, including SOEKS 112, have to be turned ON and on the person/in the environment in order to record the radiation dosage. It has to be carried around to accumulate the dose. SOEKS 112 can show real time radiation or the accumulated dose with a single press of a button. |
Question: | At what number on the display should I turn and run? Is this the same unit model sold by "Mirasafety |
Answer: | You should see numbers below 0.40 uSv/h in the USA for natural radiation background. It doesn't mean you have to run yet but definitely something to investigate as to why the numbers are higher than naturally should be. If you see numbers higher than 1 uSv/h - it's a good idea to increase your pace with the toes pointing away from the object or the area with high radiation. SOEKS is the original manufacturer of this portable Geiger counter, including the ones that are sold by Mira safety. It's always better to get our detectors directly from the manufacturer as we guarantee that they are stored properly and up to date with the latest updates. Regards, Andrew from SOEKS USA |
Question: | Will it or any software track history on iOS device |
Answer: | No, this is a standalone Geiger counter/Dosimeter that makes and keeps all the measurements on the meter itself. |
Question: | Why it's so slow? You can die before you see real radiation numbers |
Answer: | When High radiation is detected, you’ll know it right away - there will be a spike in the readings, the audio clicks will become very frequent, and the visual indicator (LED) will blink rapidly. No way to miss that! For subtle changes in the radiation background the maximum time for the most accurate readings takes only 2 minutes, usually less. 120 seconds is not enough time to get a lethal dose even during the Chernobyl disaster. And the best part, that this small Geiger counter (dosimeter) reads up to 999 mSv (999 Sv), while the Geiger counters initially used in Chernobyl only read up to 34 mSv, hence the delay for the alarm and the emergency response. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this detect non-ionizing radiation |
Answer: | No. The non-ionizing radiation (light, radio waves, Electromagnetic fields e.g. microwaves) are not detectable by geiger counters. Geigers detect ionizing radiation such as Beta, Gamma and X-ray. Illustration: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D2vqAz_UwAEUAhU.jpg Detector for non-ionizing Electromagnetic emissions such as microwaves, household appliances and power lines: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007ZBETWC |
Question: | Can this be used to detect radiation in food? I use Apple products, will I get on line support |
Answer: | If someone puts a radioactive source in your food you might detect it, but most food is less radioactive then the concrete in the walls of your building. Also food could be used to shield this device from cosmic radiation, which means you would see a lower count rate in the presence of food. |
Question: | does this device test NORM or radiation in pipe used in the oilfield business |
Answer: | Generally yes, while this depends on radionuclides in such pipe, ie radium, radon, uranium, potassium and thorium. The Geiger detects Beta, Gamma and X-ray radiation, which are emitted by all aforementioned materials except for Radon gas. |
Question: | Will there be software available for Apple devices |
Answer: | No |

Question: | Does this also detect and measure Radon gas |
Answer: | Radon gas emits Alpha radiation, which Geiger-Mueller detectors cannot see. The Alpha particles will be stopped by the casing of the detector and will never be counted. If you really want to detect Alpha particles, you need a "scintillation" detector, that will have a microscopically thin window to allow the particles into the detection chamber, typically of an aluminized mylar sheet. This detector states it will detect beta type and gamma / X-ray radiation only. |
Question: | what is the difference between this version and the outdoor version that costs $2b more |
Answer: | I don't have the outdoor version, but I would expect that it is more ruggedized. |
Question: | This is scaled to detect exposure in the µSv range. Can it be switched to detect exposure in the Sv range |
Answer: | No, that would not be practical. Sv (sievert) range is abnormally high - it's Chernobyl-level exposure and instant radiation sickness. 1 Sv (sievert) = 1000 mSv (millisieverts) 1 millisievert = 1000 uSv (microsieverts)In most households radiation levels are circa 0.20 uSv/h (microsieverts per hour)Illustrated article with real-life examples is here:https://www.allianz.com/en/about_us/open-knowledge/topics/environment/articles/110407-radiation-how-much-is-harmful.html/ |
Question: | Will this device be just as effective in radiation detection if it's inside a shirt pocket |
Answer: | Yes, the fabric would block little if any background radiation. It has many modes so you can have it display a received dose or the ambient radiation. |

RADEX RD1706 is the new addition to the RADEX family of radiation detectors and monitors. This device can be used not only by professionals working with sources of ionizing radiation, but also by average consumers interested in checking the contamination of places and objects, and knowing the results with higher degree of precision.
RADEX RD1706 is capable of:
increased precision of indications
expanded range of indications (to 999.0 uSv/h)
range of measured Gamma radiation energy: 1-1.25 MeV
range of measured X-ray radiation energy: 0.03-3.0 MeV
range of measured Beta radiation energy: 0.25-3.5 MeV
time of continuous operation: ~500 hours
able to register x-ray radiation
This model uses two SBM20-1 type Geiger Muller counters, one each for beta- and gamma-rays. The use of two separate sensors allowed us to reduce time of observation to 26 seconds while improving accuracy and precision of results. The range of indications was expanded 100 times, compared to RADEX RD1503.
RD1706 can register the value of a doze-rate as high as 999.0 uSv/h. Time of observation automatically adjusts from 26 seconds to as low as 1 second when presence of strong radiation sources is detected. This is necessary to ensure safety of professionals working with or operating ionizing radiation sources.
Most other features from the RADEX family were also retained, i.e. the usual frame with a large LCD screen, three operation buttons, battery charge indicator, display backlighting and personal settings like threshold alarm activation, alarm strength, backlight option.
Professional, rugged detector that is incredibly simple to use and understand.
User questions & answers
Question: | Hello, if i buy this product, could you give me a calibration certificate |
Answer: | These devices do not have individual calibration certificates. In this respect they are like thermometers. The model line undergoes certification and random testing by a third-party lab in Germany. CE certificates are issued. We can email testing protocols (in German) and the CE certification. These units are calibrated at our factory using Cs-137 isotope. A QC engineers tests and signs off on every unit. The initial setup lasts several years. |
Question: | Can it distinguish the beta radiation reading from gamma radiation? If not, what is the purpose of dual GM tube sensor |
Answer: | You can not distinguish with this model. It shows the highest value, be it Beta, Gamma or X-rays.For separate readings you would need the RD1008 - The best model we havehttps://www.amazon.com/RADEX-Quarta-Rad-Accuracy-Professional-Radiation/dp/B0053AJ45O/The purpose of dual sensors in RD1706 is increased sensitivity and accuracy for lower dosage. It is also significantly faster than 1503+ and reads up to 999.99 uSv/h as opposed to 9.99 uSv/h on 1503+ |
Question: | Does it work on food |
Answer: | It is a radiation detector, so yes it will work on food. It will detect the presence of radiation within the limits of the device. That is to say that extremely low levels will not be detected; that takes special equipment. |
Question: | How does it compare to the RADEX RD1212? The units are within about $15 of each other. Why this one over the RD1212? I am primarily interested in testing food and outside of small liquid containers |
Answer: | As I don't own teh RD1212, I am not able to make compare the two.The 1706 seems easy to use once you overlook the unusual phrasing in the operators manual. I tested in on an onld radium dial watch and it worked well in all alerting modes. The unit does seem well built and compact. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does it detect rad in food |
Answer: | Would not be sensitive enough to detect low level radiation as you would find in food. |
Question: | Is this item itself radioactive? I don't know much about Geiger counters. Could holding this device expose me to radiation |
Answer: | No. No Geiger counter is radioactive itself, it just senses radiation. Much the same way that a harmless voltage meter determines how much voltage something is generating. The meter itself does not contain or produce any electrical voltage, or the way a thermometer measures heat. The thermometer doesn't contain or produce any heat, it just monitors it. It's the same with the Geiger Counter. If there's radiation present it senses it and determines how much. You will be perfectly safe handling it. Do not worry. |
Question: | what is useage? nuclear detector? that will be 1 time use then no need to test again |
Answer: | Wanted to check on local radiation levels! Continued radioactive releases from Fukushima nuclear facilities in Japan with the potential of still another major explosion and meltdown of reactor Number 4, poses a real threat to Hawaii. Local government does not provide information on this issue. You can also access a lot of information in other areas that use this detector and radiation levels in other areas on your computer. It gives me peace of mind that I can detect possible contamination in my food. The pacific ocean is being poisoned by Fukushima radioactive discharge, and fish will bio concentrate radioactive materials! Seafood becomes a concern. As time goes by, these issues are becoming more concerning! News often is suppressed to prevent public panic. I hope this helps answer your question. |
Question: | What are the battery(s |
Answer: | Batteries are the small AAA in size. There are two of them for powering the unit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this unit have its own memory, and how big is it? How long can it record |
Answer: | Yes, it does. It can store up to 160 readings. These readings can be every minute, every 3 minutes, 5, 15, 30, every hour and so on.Typically though, the Bluetooth version is linked to the Android app and transfers data in real time, without storing it. |
Question: | as a non smart phone user...is this useable without a smart phone |
Answer: | Yes, This unit works by itself as a radiation monitor. I don't know if the unit can collect reading data to itself because I cannot see reading log from the unit, however the smart phone with Bluetooth (and apps) can show/set the reading logs (data collection interval), location. |
Question: | Will there be new software updates that use the bluetooth feature |
Answer: | Possibly, we update software all the time. What additional features do you have in mind? |
Question: | Can this be left on all the time? aka, can i plug it in to a usb device and leave it home? also, can the app send an email or text on detection |
Answer: | It can be on all the time. The trick is to plug it into USB and remove the batteries. The device prefers batteries to other power source, hence even if it's plugged via USB, if it has batteries - it will drain them. No email or text yet, but that is an excellent suggestion. |

The PRM-9000 includes the same two-inch (50.8 mm) pancake Geiger detector tube that is the gold-standard for surveying areas for potentially harmful ionizing radiation levels and for detecting radioactive contamination of packages, items, equipment and people. The instrument is suitable for regulatory inspections, and for the detection, measurement and monitoring of broad spectrum, low energy radionuclides, including Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM). The two-line, alphanumeric display supports both English and Japanese languages promoting ease-of-use and concise measurement. The display is backlit to support low-light conditions. Using only one key, users can scroll through several screens that display present, average, maximum and minimum measurements in uR/hr, mR/hr, uSv/hr, Counts per Second (CPS) or Counts per Minute (CPM). The PRM-9000 instrument not only records the maximum radiation measured, but also displays the time and date at which the maximum occurred. Battery life is over 4-years under normal conditions from a single, readily-available, 9-volt lithium battery that is user-installable without soldering. Standard alkaline 9-volt batteries available everywhere provide over 2-years of life under normal conditions. With over 100K bytes of data logging memory included, the PRM-9000 can autonomously store up to 91,466 minutes or hours of time-stamped measurements. These measurements can then be uploaded to a PC in CSV format for analysis. A user-settable dose rate alarm sounds an audible alert when the measured radiation level exceeds that of the alarm level setting. Designed by Mazur Instruments and manufactured in the USA, the PRM-9000 includes abundant I/O options including support for headphones, external speakers, external power and PC/Mac USB data exchange (requires optional 3.5mm to USB adapter cable). Minimum energy sensitivity alpha (2.5 MeV), beta (50 keV), gamma/X rays (10 keV). Gamma sensitivity: 3,500 CPM/mR/hr (Cs-137).

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I carry this through airport security on a somewhat regular basis (e.g. twice a month |
Answer: | Generally, yes. I have done so many times, in carry-on, in fact. in the US, there is no ban on Geiger counters. But take your Invoice or Operation Manual with you as a identifying criteria in case TSA chooses to scrutinize it. |
Question: | How often does this need to be sent out for calibration and what is the cost to have it calibrated |
Answer: | You can calibrate yourself if you buy a known source of radioactive material. I don't think it needs it unless your exposing it to high levels often. |
Question: | Can this Mazur Geiger counter measure radioactivity in a zirconia or porcelain dental crown or implant either already in the mouth or outside of it |
Answer: | The Mazur 9000 is very sensitive. A dental crown is difficult to get to, and proximity increases the radiation collecting on the disk, especially gamma (on the back of the instrument is a 1 inch disk which generates the radiation signal). That being said you will get a reading from an open mouth, or thru cheek if the radiation is strong. However, very low concentration (100 Bq/kg) of say cesium-137 will not produce a signal above background radiation. |
Question: | Would like to carry the detector with me in my purse. Is it as durable as say a cell phone? Or very delicate |
Answer: | The instrument is fairly rugged but is obviously larger & heavier than a cell phone....The unit comes with a protective plastic bag which I would use if stored in a purse....Bottom line is yes, you can carry it in a purse... |
