14 best condensation pump for furnace
A condensation pump for a furnace is a vital component in high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. It plays a crucial role in managing the condensate that is produced during the heating or cooling process. Here's what you need to know about condensation pumps for furnaces:
Purpose:
- Condensate Management: High-efficiency furnaces and air conditioning systems produce condensate as a result of the combustion or cooling process. This condensate needs to be properly removed to prevent damage to the furnace and ensure efficient operation.
Operation:
- Collection: The condensate produced by the furnace or air conditioner is collected in a drainage pan or tray.
- Pumping: The condensation pump is responsible for pumping the collected liquid away from the furnace or air handler. It typically pumps the condensate through a small-diameter plastic or PVC pipe.
- Disposal: The pumped condensate is typically discharged into a drain or wastewater system, often through a dedicated drain line.
Key Features:
- Float Switch: Many condensation pumps are equipped with a float switch that activates the pump when the collected condensate reaches a certain level.
- Safety Overflow Switch: In addition to the float switch, some pumps have a safety overflow switch that can shut down the furnace or air conditioner if the pump fails, preventing water damage.
- Quiet Operation: Modern condensation pumps are designed to operate quietly to avoid disturbing occupants in the vicinity of the furnace or air handler.
- Easy Maintenance: These pumps are often designed for easy maintenance, with removable covers for cleaning and servicing.
Installation:
- Condensation pumps are typically installed near the furnace or air handler, often in a location where gravity drainage is not feasible.
- Proper installation includes connecting the pump to the condensate drain line and ensuring that the pump is level and securely mounted.
Maintenance:
- Regular maintenance is essential to keep the condensation pump in good working condition. This may include cleaning the pump, checking for clogs in the drain line, and testing the float switch and safety overflow switch.
Importance:
- A functioning condensation pump is critical to prevent water damage and ensure the efficient operation of the furnace or air conditioning system.
- Without proper condensate removal, water can accumulate in the furnace or air handler, leading to corrosion and reduced system efficiency.
Condensation pumps for furnaces are an integral part of HVAC systems, especially in high-efficiency units. They help manage the condensate produced during the heating and cooling process, ensuring that it is safely removed from the system to prevent damage and maintain efficient operation.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this pump have a safety switch |
Answer: | Yes, Andrew Bauer covered it well. However, you must regularly maintain the pump according to the manufacturer's instructions, or the safety switch won't work when needed. I didn't know about the maintenance requirement (thanks, installers), so my 18 year old old pump didn't stop the A/C and I ended up with water all over the place. The one time in 18 years I needed the safety switch and it didn't work! Just make sure you put pump maintenance on your calendar. |
Question: | All these pumps use 3/8" tubing. I have a 40' run (3.5' max lift). I think PVC would be easier to keep the drain line straight (no sags). Thoughts |
Answer: | A 40' run is a long way, but since your rise is only 3 1/2', that should not be a problem. I'm not a pro, but I expect the pump to work fine as long as you adhere to the 3/8" diameter. |
Question: | I want to connect this to our dehumidifier and drain out to the utility sink about 15 feet away. Can it go horizontal first then up? (about 3 feet |
Answer: | Absolutely, yes. The total "head" of your installation is only 3 feet, which is much less than the rated 15-20 feet. Should have no problem. |
Question: | Does it come with a built in check valve |
Answer: | Mine at times just stays running, check valve works. I have taken it apart and cleaned it still randomly stays running, have to pull out power cord then it works |

User questions & answers
Question: | I need a pump for my air bearing tone arm, does anyone know the output psi |
Answer: | This is basically a transfer pump that won't develope higher pressure if you are concerned about psi. |
Question: | If i plug it in so i still need to wire it for it to work |
Answer: | Nope, no more wiring will be needed. All you will need to do is ensure the water line from the A/C is in place, and the output hose is in place. It will work just fine at that point. I actually have a hose from a dehumidifier into it, as well as the line from the A/C, and it works perfectly for me. |
Question: | Do you know if this pump is 1.5 A 1 Phase |
Answer: | Hello, Yes, it is 1.5 Amps FLA and 1 Phase. Thank you, PartsZone Supply |
Question: | can the sensor be purchased separately |
Answer: | I would expect that since this unit works so well, three years for me, that it would be better to replace the entire unit rather than try to replace a sensor. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where does the safety switch wire to? My currently pump does not have this, so can I just leave the wires hanging |
Answer: | you mount it below a condensate drain, when the lower box gets full the pump turns on, and pumps the condensate thru the supplied tube to a drain or outside to the ground. |
Question: | What does the -C stand for in the model number |
Answer: | Shove a heavy gauge weed-wacker string through it. If that doesn't work try compressed air or replace the tube. You can get the replacement tube from Amazon. |
Question: | Is it normal for this poem to be so noisy I can hear it all the way through the house when it pumps |
Answer: | Look at the graph in the pictures As the pumping height increases the the flow rate decreases. At 10 feet it pumps 10 gallons per hour At 15 feet it pumps 0 gallons per hour |
Question: | I don’t see rubber feet enclosed... Does it have to be included? How should I level it on bracket it the tank doesn’t have flat bottom |
Answer: | I would say that should be no problem. As soon as the black tub fills, it triggers the pump, which is a great little workhorse. The pump capacity will be much more then the dehumidifiers. |

User questions & answers
Question: | If pump fails, will water spill out or back up in the input line? I want to use with dehumidifier which has auto stop, prefer it to back up |
Answer: | You can use Little Giant but not the VCMA-20 series. Your original Hartell pump is 115 volts, the VCMA-20 is 230 volts. If you want to use Little Giant, use the VCMA-15 series. |
Question: | How many gallons does it pump in an hour |
Answer: | Shipping is 5 to 7 days and one year warranty. I have hard water and it lasts about 6 years, and I buy the rebuilding kit to restore the unit. |
Question: | There are so many models. Which one do I buy? I need to pump 8 ft high and 55ft down a long basement to sump pump |
Answer: | Correct. The pump starts via a float switch that is integrated into the unit. The water has to reach a certain level within the bottom housing then the pump will start. |
Question: | What is the difference between the VCMA 20UL, the 20ULS, the 20ULT, and the 20ULST |
Answer: | No that is optional |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have an overflow pan for my central a/c unit. Can this pump sit in the pan to drain if the pan becomes full or does it eliminate the pan by pumping directly from the a/c. Have already had one ceiling lick because of a clogged drain line. Thanks for any info |
Answer: | The pump replace the pan and has an automatic shut off that can be connected to heat/air system to shut it down so humidifier and airconditioner are also shut off if pump fails. The pump can be set up to pump to drain or sink. |
Question: | My pump has stopped working, can I temporarily use just a hose that drains the water until I get another pump, or will that harm my furnace |
Answer: | You may want a pro to check out what you have but I would not risk water damage inside a house or damage to the furnace. |
Question: | What does the safety switch do |
Answer: | Per the manufacturer: http://www.franklin-electric.com/media/documents/995641.pdf**Some models equipped with external, float activated switchfor automatic high level water detection(safety overflow switch)**For models with safety overflow switch: dual function NOand NC operation (set to NO from factory for equipmentshut down connection)**Models equipped with safety overflow switch includetwo 5" switch lead wires |
Question: | does the pump fits in a dehumidifiers trays |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use garden hose (3/4") as inlet from dehumdifier to this pump? or do I need adapter to convert from 3/4" garden hose |
Answer: | The issue of flammability is not likely with the pad, but the flammability of hay/straw and styrofoam. If you do use an electric heating pad or light bulb around hay/straw, styrofoam or other flamable products, expect those materials to ignite and burn. For example, if you're using straw inside a cat shelter, expect the shelter to burn/melt and loose the investment as well as now having a BBQ cat. The same with a barn, however a barn will be a larger investment likely not easily recoverable from. Judging possibly risks, the cat, even within a small dedicated cat shelter, may not awake and may also suffer carbon monoxide exposure, possibly injurying or killing, especially the younger cats. Would I put electrical devices around hay or styrofoam, likely not unless I actively monitored the light bulb and/or heating pad! Search YouTube videos for other hay/stray electrical fires with farm/barn animals! |
Question: | what are the inlet sizes |
Answer: | Since I use mine outdoors in a cat house for the local strays, I do place an old thin towel on top of the light fleece cover that the warmer comes with. This way I can wash it and the cover doesn't get dirty. I would not use a cat bed on top of it. I'd be concerned that the bottom of the bed would get heated, but not the cat. |
Question: | Can I set the unit into a small bucket and have it drain automatically when the water gets to that level? The ac unit drips into a small bucket |
Answer: | If you can get your cat to lay on it, it should be fine (it is hard, but I bought one with a fleece cover). It is my understanding that the power doesn't "shut off" at 40 degrees, but the heating element does. I didn't use this long (literally about 5 hours total) as it didn't work for me, but please review some of the other comments re this product. Some people did have problems with burning of the elements, but others love it, have multiple ones and have no problems. I use "Snuggle safe" discs instead, which can provide @ 8-12 hours of heat after microwaving (if you get be sure to follow directions, do not overheat). You can control how hot these get by how long you microwave it, so these worked better for me & I didn't have to bother with cords/electricity. I placed mine under towels or blankets & used indoors or outdoors as needed. I've used for both feral outdoor and elderly indoor cats. Ive also used self-warming pads, and those worked well for indoor cats. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with the drain tubing |
Answer: | I had both the medium size and the large size of this pet bed warmer. My cats preferred the medium. Even though it is long and narrow, it gives them a choice; the whole bed is not heated but if they get too warm they could roll off of it without having to leave the bed. The large one gave them no option in the cat bed so I put it on the couch where they could still use it but could roll off of it partway when too warm. Unfortunately the large one somehow became WAY TOO HOT I think the thermostat broke. I didn't realize it until my sick old cat would not lie down, and when I put my hand on it, it was scorching hot! I cut off the cord and threw it out so no one else would try to use it. The medium ones have always worked well for me. I would think you could bend the large one somewhat up the side of the cat's bed but you might want to consider the medium size so they can choose whether to lie directly on the heat or not. I realize your question is an old one but maybe this will help you or someone! |
Question: | is this quieter than the little giant 1/50hp? completely new to these pumps but little giant seems very loud for what it is |
Answer: | I only buy the K&H heating pads for my cats. The reason is they are low wattage and hold a constant 101 temperature which is the body temperature of a cat. I have used this heating pad for over 15 years. I wouldn't use any other brand they last a long time. |
Question: | What inner diameter size tubing does it need for the discharge |
Answer: | This product is meant to be put inside of a pet's bed under 1/2" to 1" of fabric. We do not supply separate covers for this product. |
Question: | I will have a 10ft lift then a straight run of about 14 feet of tubing then about 5ft down to the drain. Will this pump be enough |
Answer: | For those who want to know, the cost per day can be figured out by: (watts/1000) * hours * cost per kilowatt-hour. So, if you're using the 4 watt model, 24 hours, with an electric rate of 13 cents per kWH, then it would be: (4/1000)*24*.13 = $0.012 dollars per day. Or in other words, about 37 to 38 cents per month. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I’m using this for a dehumidifier that will be run 24.7. Is this pump strictly plug and play |
Answer: | The top, where the drain needs to enter pump, is 1 3/4” from floor. If pan is flat on floor it will be about same elevation, I think - so - no. If you can somehow get the pump lower or if you replace water heater - raise heater ... |
Question: | Hooked unit up and Not draining |
Answer: | It can connect to the Ac to shut it down but it needs to be plugged in by itself |
Question: | Can I attach a central AC drain and a dehumidifier drain |
Answer: | I don't know the answer. Google and contact the Little Giant folks. |
Question: | Can this be an easy replacement for a failing Hartell Kt3x-1ul |
Answer: | it has a lengthy "whoosh" as it is pumping the water (10-12 seconds). The whoosh is quiet and certainly not irritating at all. Indeed I sometimes like to hear it to know my whole house humidifier is running...it is quieter than my furnace (which is quiet--and new)...but the air flow of the furnace masks any sound from the pump. With a door closed, you will not hear much... |
