User questions & answers
Question: | Anyone have the problem with the ammonia test gellin |
Answer: | I think I know what you mean.. does it get a thick body to it? Like it's not clear like the other tests? Mine does that. Just shake it hard, and should be okay |
Question: | What is the expiration date |
Answer: | The expiration date is printed on the back of the box in blue and on the bottles as well. The one I received Jan 2020 had an expiration date of Oct 2024. |
Question: | Hi I bought the salt water kit in error. Can I return and order the fresh water kit |
Answer: | Amazon does not refund organics, for the sake of contamination and or tainting. Read the rules for returns and purchases. |
Question: | How many times can you test with this kit |
Answer: | Nowhere near the claimed amount for sure. There are about 20 drops in a ml and the nitrate test requires 10 drops of each soln. and has 30ml in each bottle. This amounts to about 60 tests for the nitrate, which is the one you would use the most for a cycled aquarium. Since you should test daily for a new tank and weekly for an established tank, This test set should last slightly less than a year if used regularly for one aquarium. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this test kit really do 1-100 PPM? A picture of the color card would be great |
Answer: | We have submitted the photo of the card so hopefully it will appear shortly for you. Yes, it measures 1 - 100ppm. |
Question: | could you please explain the directions to use? I need this for my science project procedures list |
Answer: | 1- Rinse the test vial with the water to be tested. Dispose of rinse water. 2- Add 1 ml of salt water to the test vial to be tested. 3- Add 1 level scoop of NO3-1 powder to the sample water in the test vial. Swirl for 30 seconds to mix. 4- let the sample sit for 3 minutes to change color. 5- place the sample vial on the white part of the color chart and compare the color to the chart looking from the top. 6- If the reading is lower than 10 ppm, compare the color looking through the side of the vial rather than the top to get a more accurate reading for low NO3 concentrations. |
Question: | Is this used for freshwater or salt water only |
Answer: | Description for Salifert Profi Test NO³ -Nitrate-: With the Salifert Profi Test NO³ you can determine the nitrate content in freshwater oder seawater exactly and easily. A too high nitrate concentration can result in unwanted algae-growth and these might irritate corals in their neighborhood. Nitrate as such also retards coral growth. The nitrate concentration in a proper functioning reef aquarium should preferably be lower than 1 mg/L. Fish-only aquariums would usually show much higher nitrate concentrations. Most test kits use a procedure in which a certain part of nitrate is converted chemically into nitrite and is measured as such. The very special ingredients in the Salifert Profi-Test NO³ -Nitrate- allow a very fast and precise measurement. The Salifert Profi Test pH is sufficient for 60 tests in freshwater or seawater. |
Question: | Is this test for freshwater or saltwater aquarium |
Answer: | This can be used for freshwater just fine |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used for testing the PH levels of our drinking water |
Answer: | Yes, but would be better off with normal ph strips. Drinking water shoud have ph 6.5-8.3, closer to 7 is best. These strips are only for the higher range >8 |
Question: | Does this use the same chemicals as the regular API test kit |
Answer: | No. The regular pH range is lower. This test goes up to 8.6, I think, and is for saltwater and reef tanks or any specialty environment that needs high pH. The other test uses different chemicals |
Question: | Hello, Which of the (2) cards do I use to check the PH for brackish water? Thanks |
Answer: | One is fresh and the other is salt. It says on the card. |
Question: | does this product have an expiration date |
Answer: | not really sure but i definetly prefer the seachem marine ph & alkalinity test which i use just for ph...i do use api for some of the other tests i do. |

Question: | Can a colorblind person use this test kit? I have trouble with red and green |

Question: | Allowed to carry on plane? TSA says 3.3 ounce, i hope there aren't chemicals on it that i shouldn't carry. 0_ |
Answer: | This one I believe is safe to carry on a plane. The ammonia kit however, must be shipped by ground mail (says amazon) because of federal regulations as to what can and can't go on a plane. So since this one does NOT have that warning and can be shipped via prime 2-day, I believe it is fine. You will have to ask the nice security officer at the airport though. |
Question: | Hello I ordered this the 21st of April why is it taking so long to ship it |
Answer: | Supply chains could be delayed due to Covid? |
Question: | Is this test necessary and is it easy to use for a novice? I received a 15 gallon as a present but I did not know it would be so much work and money |
Answer: | The test is easy to use; just remember to empty and rinse your vial after use, and rinse the vial with tank water (I dip some out with a small clean Dixie cup, then pour it into the vial and discard the water into the sink) before filling with water to do your test. And I examine the results under sunlight or a daylight spectrum fluorescent. If you are doing regular water changes(weekly and/or as your water tests say to), and keeping the tank clean, you will not have to use this test often. Do not overfeed, and do not overload your tank (put too many fish or put too big of a fish in it). At the start you should have ammonia and nitrite test kits, and test daily to see what is going on while your filter cycles, then as a doublecheck for water quality. And yes it can take a month or so for your filter to cycle.Goldfish have a reputation for being a cheap fish, and easy to take care of... I breed and keep fancies; and honestly, 3 goldfish per 55 gallon aquarium! A mature goldfish is about the size of an adult fist in body; and it is hard to keep water quality good for three that size in that size aquarium. In a 15 gallon no more than two small ones and they are going to grow and outgrow your tank. Half a dozen guppies or so will work, or a couple of mollies; or one betta. Bettas need water about 85f, good quality, and at least a 10 gallon aquarium. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this kit measure seachem Cupramine copper levels |
Answer: | Yes, it is one of the few that can correctly measure Cupramine. |
Question: | Does this product work in pH of |
Answer: | It works but you need to know the “copper” this kit also measures amine bonded copper. |
Product description
This kit measures total (NH3 and NH4+) and free ammonia (NH3 only) down to less than 0.05 mg/L and is virtually interference free in marine and fresh water. Free ammonia is the toxic form of ammonia (vs. ionized Ammonia NH4+ which is non-toxic) and thus it is much more important to keep an eye on the level of free ammonia in your system.
This kit is based on the same gas exchange technology that is used in the Ammonia Alert® and thus is the only kit on the market that can read levels of free ammonia while using ammonia removal products such as Prime®, Safe™, AmGuard™ and any similar competing products. The other kits (salicylate or Nessler based) determine the total ammonia by raising the pH of the test solution to 12 or greater. At this high pH all ammonia removal products will breakdown and rerelease the ammonia, thus giving you a false ammonia reading.
- 75 test
- Fresh or saltwater use
- Unique indicator
- Measures free and total ammonia
User questions & answers
Question: | How easy is this to read compared to the api ammonia test kit? the yellow and green of the api kid is too difficult for me to differentiate between |
Answer: | This kit is the only kit on the market that reads both ammonia and ammonium . It lets you see both. API reads both combined therefore you never really know how much of free ammonia that is deadly to fish vs Ammonium which is harmless. It is really easy to read and has good instructions. |
Question: | How many times can i reuse the wafers? i test for “free” ammonia more often than total (which uses the reagent) because i had added ammo-lock |
Answer: | Not sure how many times each one can be reused but it contains enough for 75 tests. |
Question: | The discs turned purple instead if blue? It doesn't match the color chart! Help |
Answer: | In my experience they are sort of a purple-tinted blue...or even gray. |
Question: | Can anyone tell me what the low/less sensitive and high/more sensitive readings mean? Is one better to use as in more accurate or for something else |
Answer: | I haven’t found much difference between them. This kit uses little discs that slowly develop color in the presence of ammonia, after a set period of time you compare the color of the disc to a slider that has ammonia values printed on it. 10-15min for low sensitivity, 30min for high sensitivity. If you want, you can take a low sensitivity reading at 10-15min, then wait until 30min for a second, high sensitivity reading. |
