This type of slide gate valve was originally designed for draining tanks and controlling shallow bodies of water like ponds. They also can also be used as shut off valves in low pressure or vacuum air lines. Please note that each valve size has an open and closed pressure rating. Because the plastic paddle can flex with flowing water they are not good for throttling water or trying to close the valve when water is flowing – thus the low mid flow cut off water pressure of ~6psi. These slide valves are sometimes referred to as “knife” gate valves and are a great alternative to ball valves in low pressure applications since they are full flow, quick opening, and are generally a much lower cost especially in larger sizes. Works well with soft debris like waste but hard debris can settle in the bottom of the valve seat/slot and prevent it from closing completely. They can easily be repaired by unbolting and replacing the seals or the valve body. The handles simply unscrew for easy replacement – if you do so be sure not to damage the valve shaft. Extension rods are available for remote actuation.

| Answer: | I left mine out in the winter. One inside the barn and one for the outside hose bib. HOWEVER, I disconnected them from the hose bib after each use so they wouldn't freeze up. It's a lot easier to drain a 6 foot hose and use it again in the morning. I used mine to fill horse water buckets and the water trough ouside. Worked great all year, but be sure to take them off the vavle after each use during freezing weather. |

| Answer: | Mine came with washers, but leaked anyway, not through the washers, but where the two brass pieces of the connector were swagged together. I returned them. It appears, both from reviews and from my experience compared to the other answer so far, that there is a quality control problem, some OK, others not. It's frustrating that it seems impossible to buy a ready-made short hose of high quality. My solution is to buy a 12-15' foot premium hose, cut it in two, and put replacement connectors on the cut ends. |

| Answer: | No! This is a "Gate Valve". You twist/turn the round handle which causes the the "gate" to move up or down and open or close the pipe opening. The other type is a "ball valve" which I have had to replace in six cases because they jam up and the handles break off from using so much pressure to try to make them work.
