12 best fire hose fittings

Fire hose fittings are essential components used in firefighting and various industrial applications to connect hoses to water sources, pumps, nozzles, and other equipment. These fittings play a crucial role in maintaining a secure and efficient water supply during emergencies and industrial processes. Here are some key aspects of fire hose fittings:

  1. Types of Fire Hose Fittings:

    • Storz Fittings: Storz fittings are popular in Europe and consist of two symmetrical halves that are connected by twisting. They provide a quick and secure connection.
    • Camlock Fittings: Camlock fittings, also known as cam and groove fittings, have a simple locking mechanism and are widely used in the United States.
    • Threaded Fittings: These fittings feature threaded connections that require tightening using wrenches or spanners.
    • Quick Connect Couplings: Quick connect couplings, such as quarter-turn couplings, offer rapid connection and disconnection without the need for tools.
    • Adapters: Adapters are used to connect hoses with different thread types and sizes.
  2. Material Composition: Fire hose fittings are typically made from durable materials like aluminum, brass, stainless steel, or plastic. The choice of material depends on factors such as the application, budget, and compatibility with the hose and water source.

  3. Sizes and Configurations: Fire hose fittings come in various sizes and configurations to accommodate different hose diameters and equipment requirements. Common sizes include 1.5 inches (38 mm), 2.5 inches (65 mm), and 4 inches (100 mm).

  4. Pressure Ratings: Fittings are designed to handle specific pressure ratings, and it's crucial to match the fittings with the pressure requirements of the hoses and equipment they connect to. High-pressure fittings are used in situations where a strong and consistent water supply is needed, such as firefighting.

  5. Firefighting Applications: In firefighting, fire hose fittings are critical components that allow firefighters to connect hoses to fire hydrants, pumps, nozzles, and other firefighting equipment. Quick and reliable connections are essential to ensure a rapid response to emergencies.

  6. Industrial Applications: Fire hose fittings are also used in various industrial settings for applications such as transferring water, chemicals, and other fluids. They are important in maintaining the integrity and safety of fluid transport systems.

  7. Maintenance and Inspection: Regular maintenance and inspection of fire hose fittings are essential to ensure their functionality and reliability. Fittings should be checked for signs of wear, corrosion, and damage, and they should be replaced if any issues are detected.

  8. Compliance with Standards: Fire hose fittings should meet relevant industry standards and regulations to ensure their quality and performance. Compliance with standards helps ensure the safety of users and the effectiveness of firefighting and industrial processes.

In summary, fire hose fittings are crucial components that facilitate the connection of hoses to various equipment and water sources in firefighting and industrial applications. They come in various types, sizes, and materials, and their proper selection and maintenance are essential for safety and efficiency in these critical situations.

Side 1 - Male 1 1/2 inch NH / NST will only connect to a female 1 1/2 inch NH / NST

Side 2 - Male 1 1/2 inch NPT will only connect to a female 1 1/2 inch NPT or 1 1/2 inch NPSH

NH / NST:  The most common thread type in use by fire departments today is NST or National Standard Thread. NST also goes by the initials NH or National Hose. It can even be referred to as NHT or National Hose Thread. But NST or NH is more common these days. NH = NST.

NPSH:  National Pipe Straight Hose (NPSH) or Iron Pipe Thread (IPT) has the same threads per inch (TPI) as National Pipe Tapered (NPT) but the thread does not taper. NPSH is a straight thread and seals by a gasket in the female coupling which allows for a swivel, just like NH / NST, which make both ideal for hose couplings. Warning - It will NOT thread into a female NPT pipe. For example, a male NPSH coupling will NOT thread into a female metal or pvc pipe.

NPT:  National Pipe Tapered is common in plumbing and some industrial uses. Sometimes referred to as pipe thread because PVC pipe and schedule 40 pipe are typically threaded in NPT. As its name implies this is a tapered thread so that the outside diameter of the male (ODM) gets smaller towards the end of the fitting and the inside diameter of the female narrows with depth. As the two fittings are threaded together the opposite tapers force thread friction and makes the seal without the use of a gasket.

  • Hex nipple fitting 1-1/2" NH to 1-1/2" NPT Double Male Fire Hose Adapter
  • Male to male adapters are used to bridge two female hose, pipe or valve fittings.
  • Suitable for use in general firefighting applications. With hexagonal section in the middle for an increased bearing surface when adjusting the fitting with a wrench
  • Hex tube fiting as a short length of pipe with threaded ends for connecting threaded pipes
  • Made of brass for corrosion resistance, ductility at high temperatures, and low magnetic permeability

User questions & answers

Question: I want to know the central axial length from the end of the male side to the end of the female side
Answer: Hi: The size listed is pre-shrunk. This tubing does shrink quite a bit so I would go with quarter inch. (1/4) to be sure it will go over the terminal end.
Question: Does the hose connection swivel? Or is this one piece
Answer: Hi: Vendors only offer this product in set lengths. I would suggest you contact a manufacturer for a specific required length. Normally heat shrink is only used in short sections such as terminal ends. Once shrunk it is not very flexible in length applications.
Question: Is this the adapter that screws into the fire hydrant
Answer: Hi: The inside diameter is 1/16 inch. This size would be used for 20 gauge wire terminal ends or splices. Shrink with heat gun or soldering gun or a flame source.
