7 best helical threaded inserts
Helical threaded inserts, often referred to simply as threaded inserts or helicoil inserts, are essential components in the realm of fasteners and industrial applications. They are used to strengthen or repair threads in materials such as metal, plastic, and other materials that may not have strong or durable threads on their own. Here's what you need to know about helical threaded inserts:
1. Purpose: Helical threaded inserts serve various purposes, including improving thread durability, increasing load-bearing capacity, and preventing thread stripping or wear in applications that involve frequent assembly and disassembly.
2. Design: These inserts are typically coil-shaped, with internal and external threads. The internal threads match the size and pitch of the screw or bolt they will be used with, while the external threads match the size and pitch of the original, damaged, or weak threads in the material.
3. Materials: Threaded inserts are made from a variety of materials, including stainless steel, brass, and various alloys. The choice of material depends on the specific application's requirements, such as corrosion resistance, temperature resistance, or electrical conductivity.
4. Installation: Installing a helical threaded insert involves tapping a hole into the material and then screwing the insert into place. This creates strong and durable threads, which can securely hold screws or bolts.
5. Applications: Threaded inserts are used in a wide range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, electronics, and manufacturing. They are particularly valuable in applications where thread stripping or wear is a concern, or when materials are relatively soft or fragile.
6. Advantages: Helical threaded inserts offer several advantages, including improved thread strength, the ability to repair damaged threads, and the option to use smaller or softer materials without compromising thread integrity.
7. Brands: Various companies manufacture and distribute threaded inserts, with brands like Helicoil being one of the most well-known in the industry.
Helical threaded inserts are versatile components that play a crucial role in ensuring the longevity and strength of threaded connections in various applications. They are an essential part of the fastening and repair process, providing secure and reliable connections, even in challenging or high-stress environments.

User questions & answers
Question: | will these work in plywood |
Answer: | Yes. Needless to say the wood has to be thick enough to support the height of the insert. These will work in any wood type (manufactured woods, hardwoods, softwoods, etc.) If you used in hardwoods with a high Janka rating (i.e, Purple Heart, Brazillian Cherry, Hard Maple, etc) it might more difficult to screw the insert in. I usually increase the hole size 'slightly'. Verify the right size of the hole in a piece of test material prior to doing it for the first time on your project. |
Question: | what is the diameter of this product |
Answer: | To install the insert, simply drill a 25/64 hole and thread in using a bolt and jam nut or optional drive tool. So if you need a hole that is .390 inch's in diameter, then the outer diameter of the insert is larger that that. |
Question: | Hi what is the outside diameter of this product |
Answer: | I measured the diameter as 0.5945 inches (~19/32"). I ended up using a 9/16 drill to make the hole large enough to screw into a hard maple block with their insertion tool. As others have stated, using a 3/8-16 bolt/bushing combination will have more grip than the insertion tool. |
Question: | Do these fit alł or most beer tap faucets |
Answer: | Careful! Although this is a 3/8-16 threaded insert it is a knife thread so it may not bite into the material. I tried using these in oak wood to use as a tap handle but it would not grab. I needed a coarser outside thread. These threads simply began to break off. I reverted to buying inserts from Lowes. I could not find a coarse outside threaded insert on Amazon. |

- ★GOOD CONNECTION PERFORMANCE: Steel thread inserts used in low-strength materials such as aluminum and magnesium can avoid thread damage and obtain good connection performance, thereby improving connection strength and improving connection conditions.
- ★WEAR RESISTANCE: Used for parts that need to be disassembled frequently, which can greatly improve the service life and wear resistance of the thread.
- ★ELASTICITY: Due to a certain elasticity, the thread insert can make the load distribution on each thread uniform, eliminate the pitch and tooth deviation between the screw and the screw hole, and absorb vibration, thereby improving the thread connection strength and fatigue resistance strength.
- ★PREVENT LOOSENING: Threaded blades can prevent loosening of screws, especially for products requiring high safety factor.
- ★EASY TO MAINTAIN: Insert the thread into a damaged screw hole, and then use the screw hole normally to avoid the loss of the workpiece.
