Answer:	They are stainless steel. Stainless steel does not rust or stain, at least not in our lifetime. Can't get better than stainless for a deck screw.
Question:	do I have to pre drill if using composit boards
Answer:	I used these to attach PVC boards to the exterior of my house, and I pre-drilled holes for each screw. This took a bit of extra time for installation but the result has been that, after three years of Massachusets weather, there have been no splits or other damage around the screws. I don't know how susceptible to splitting your boards are but I recommend drilling pilot holes just to be safe.
Question:	Do you need to predrill
Answer:	Installed plastic planks with these, you should predrill and precountersink for those. Softwood probably not required. My joist layout was such that the hole patterns were identical. I made a jig, used a transfer punch to mark locations and used a drill press set-up in the garage. You could do it in position with a hand drill using a stop block. The countersinking was done using a micro-stop tool bought on Ebay. Makes uniform countersinking simple. It will work on a hand drill too. During installation, I drove (1200) of these and used only (2) driver bits.

Answer:	The manufacturer does not provide a quantity estimate on the carton. The cartons are the same size regardless of the length of the screw. If it helps, I did a 9x10 deck with 5LBs of 2.5 inch screws.
